G. Bailey is a USA Today bestselling author of books that are filled with everything from dragons to pirates. Plus, fantasy worlds and breath-taking adventures. Oh, and some swoon-worthy men that no girl could forget. G. Bailey is from the very rainy U.K. where she lives with her husband, two children and three cheeky dogs.
Holy crap on a cracker!!!!! I freaking loved this book! Thank God for my book group challenges or I never would have found this gem!!
First let’s take a look at this absolutely gorgeous cover!!
"For a woman people fear, you are the kindest woman I’ve met in years," he says
Evie is bad assed! She’s a killer of things for reasons. She has a young girl she watches over for reasons. Some jerks capture said girl. Some of them turn out to not be jerks. They have to venture into hell with Evie’s ex boyfriend demon for reasons. A lot of crap goes down with a surprise ending for reasons! Oh, and it could be considered a love triangle but not in the way you’re thinking because I hate love triangles but this book is on my favorites list so it didn’t effect me that way.
Also, this book is on kindle unlimited US but I have bought the kindle version and the paperback version!! Now, I only hope the rest of the books are as good!
This has some major issues. I don't even want to start discussing this magnificently logic-free novel, since I literally am out of ideas on most of what was supposed to have happened in here.
Weird stuff just happens, without making much sense. It's like THIS most of the time: Q: “Angels do not die in hell. We never have. We become the light,” he says like that should explain everything, but it doesn’t explain a thing. “I died in hell . . . this doesn’t make any sense,” I shake my head, and he sighs. “You have no idea what you are, do you Evie?” he asks, and I shake my head. “Look behind you, and that is the start of your answers,” he says. I turn my head around, and see long black wings spreading out from my back, hovering in the air. Wings? I have goddamn wings? What the hell? (c) Q: I slide my sword out of my holder, and look up at the ceiling, through the glass to the sky. I watch the stars for a second, keeping the image in my mind. The beauty of the night is a wonder. “For Evelina,” I shout, and slide the sword straight through my stomach. (c) Q: I can take you somewhere safe, with other demons, and the humans there are in relationships with demons, so they won’t hurt you. (c) Q: “You must die, and I will be the one that finally–” he gets interrupted in his boring, predictable speech when my phone starts ringing. I sigh in relief, not wanting to hear that speech again. ... “Yeah?” I answer, looking back at the protector as he runs for me, his sword raised. ... “Evie . . . what are you doing right now?” Hali asks, suspiciously. “Err . . . nothing,” I reply, kneeing the protector between his legs as he tries to knock me off him. He whines, before coughing out in pain. “I don’t believe that, but I want my Chinese, so I’m going to stay quiet. Later,”... (c) Q: I don’t want to interrupt, so I pick the gun up and open it, emptying the five bullets inside before snapping the gun in two and throwing the pieces away. (c) Q: “Why do you throw such a lovely gift away?” the succubus demon asks. “When the sender is your ex, and pure evil. Literally,” (c) Q: “Where did you find this?” I demand. “On the wheel,” she says... (c) Q: He is more gorgeous than I thought now that I’m closer to him. Shame about the hating me and engaged thing. (c) Q: He watches me carefully with his dirt-smothered face, face, his green eyes that are far prettier up close... (c) Seriously, with his face, of all things?
A great book. I loved almost everything about it from the cover to the main characters a complete bad a$$.
The only thing that gave ma a pause of giving this 5 stars was the ending. It felt a bit too rushed. I was weighting whether the abrupt ness of the ending Vs the revelations, how much I enjoyed the book so far, and do I instantly want to read the next book? The answer being yes to the last three made the choice for me.
Evie has been hunted her whole life, but early on she made the transition from hunted to hunter. However she never wants anyone else to go through what she did and will help anyone in her vicinity.
Now her greatest enemies need her help and they have not only someone she cares about but also knowledge about her hidden past.
The other characters are ok but Evie is the main character and she drives the book for me. She reminds me of Psylock from the X-men in appearance but especially in attitude and for lack of a better word lethal skills.
A very good book that immediately made me want to pick up the sequel to see what happens next. I do hope the next book does have a bit of a back up story as the ending of this book seemed be a bit to rushed in my opinion, but I understand why this was done and it worked on me. I hope the next book deliverd like this one.
I used to not enjoy much Bailey's books but her last two series are seriously good. I am so glad I didn't put her work aside and gave it a try.
Runes of Truth was a really nice read. Sure, it was predictable and stuff like that but it was very enjoyable and I really liked the heroine.
PROS: - Evie is an awesome character, she has dark blue hair and that's hot and she is stronger than the guys. And I like that A LOT ; - I like the writing, it's fluid and perfect to read the book in one sitting ; - The story is very entertaining ; - I liked it, period. It's a good book, read it.
CONS: - A bit predictable but while some people might find it bothersome, i did not ; - A very very very abrupt ending that made me say out loud 'what the...?' and check a few times it was really the last page. Not a real cliffhanger, though ; - I want more. But that's not really a bad point, right?
I don't know what I just read??? I mean, the plot was okay, I guess, and the cover is super super pretty, but the writing.... I don't know if it's just me, I don't know if it's because I'm not a native English speaker, I don't know if it's because maybe something went wrong when this book was proof-read (was it even proof-read, by the way?), but I found myself really put off by the writing in this book. Grammatically speaking it just sounds weird and it lacks all sorts of musicality/smoothness one would expect in a book like this. Or maybe not? I don't know, I really didn't like it and I couldn't get properly into the story because of it. I probably would have enjoyed it at least a little if it wasn't for the messy writing, so that's why I'm giving it 2 stars instead of just one. Oh, well, at least it was short.
I think there is an interesting story buried in here somewhere. However the writing style is juvenile. I don't find any of the characters well defined or even likable. The contractions in the storyline are all over.
I remember reading this book and having one "wtf" moment after the other. I was so pissed I scribbled a page full of things I hated, I had forgotten about posting it because I forgot the name of the book and I'm too lazy to look it up on KU so I gave up. Somehow I stumble upon it again and I've searched every where for my note and I can't find it so...
Long story short, I did not like it. Giving it 2 stars because I don't know if there was a pro somewhere on that list, so just to be safe.
This one was fun fun fun! I really liked this chick (and all her 'boys').
Like in any decent UF, we have a kick-ass heroine who is awesome and fights the bad guys. What's different here? Well, the world we get thrown into. We have angels and demons (don't roll your eyes, these are the fun kind of angels and demons), we have friends and enemies, we have a fun story and a really awesome beginning of a series.
Only thing you might need to be warned about is the reversed harem thing. It's not as bad as it sounds and I don't think this story would have worked without it. I, personally, am not a big fan of this but don't really have anything against it.
Despite this though, this series is definitely worth trying, at least.
3rd reread on audio. I found that I still enjoyed it.
This book was good. I don't know why I allow reviews to sway me away from reading it before. I've tossed it aside several times thinking it would suck, I was wrong. I liked the heroine, she was strong, independent, and well developed. Maybe it's me but I enjoy very slow burn romances. I liked the men and can't wait to read the next book.
Evie has been homeless and hunted for years, every protector sent after her she has killed. With no family remaining Evie doesn't know her past or exactly why she's being hunted, her only focus is on keeping the daughter of her best friend safe. When she and Hali are taken she's shocked to discover that the protectors don't want to kill her immediately...... No they want her help. Now with Hali's life hanging in the balance Evie must go to he'll to rescue 3 Royal princesses..... Her companions? 3 protectors and the ex boyfriend/demon who volunteers to help. The journey is treacherous but the results of the trip are more shocking than Evie could've ever imagined
********* No real relationship development yet Her and the ex broke up because of a misunderstanding. I don't know if he'll end up in her harem but him claiming that he wants her back when he hasn't made an effort throughout the separation was just dumb Typical RH set up as one of the guys didn't like her To me the writing style was very amateurish, it needs some cohesion desperately While it's not terrible it didn't hold my interest enough to move on to book 2 immediately
I wanted to like this novel. It had potential. Unfortunately, there were certain things that annoyed me enough to ruin the novel overall.
Recently, I have been seriously into reverse harem romance. Good ones seem difficult to find, however. Runes of Truth seemed to have promise but was riddled with problems.
Evie is a strong female lead, though at times she acts immature for her age. The writing overall felt directed at a younger audience than it should. There was little if any world development, which is a shame considering the author could have done so much with it. The fantasy part was the best part of the novel, but, while the reader gets a glimpse of things here and there, there is little explanation about the magic and races. Maybe that is why the reader is so confused at the end when the author brings about a certain aspect, leaving the reader scratching their heads. It wasn’t skilled writing that keeps the twist from being revealed. Just the opposite in fact.
I was also put off by Evie’s bad blood against Azi. I am always floored when I read romance/erotica where the female falls in love with a demon and then becomes upset when said love interest acts like a demon. Evie thinks Azi betrayed her, but her reasoning is so ignorant and just bad that I laughed out loud at it. It’s like when someone falls for a grim reaper and then becomes upset and takes it out on said reaper when someone close to them dies. It’s so nonsensical that it infuriates me. What did you expect them to do? Change their entire way of life just because you’re in a sexual relationship?
I was pretty much done with the novel as a whole when Evie starts making out with one of her male escorts as soon as she gets him alone. Well, that’s all good and well, but they are literally in hell where everything is trying to kill them. I don’t know about you, but when I am actively being hunted, I don’t really care about getting my rocks off. And then here comes Azi acting all jealous and possessive. I could excuse that a bit since demons don’t typically like their stuff being touched. But he went all alpha male, yelling the typical “she is mine” bs when he hasn’t contacted her for half a year.
I feel like the review turned into one big rant, which wasn’t my intention at all. When I initially started the story, I was exciting, soaking up each and every word. But the writing, lack of explanation for anything, and scenarios listed above ruined the entire series for me.
Runes of Truth was pretty good for a reverse harem. I feel like it's been ages since I dove into one of those books. Even though it was highly predictable it did end up being a nice, quick, and easy read. Especially with the week I had - I definitely needed this.
Evie is a pretty awesome character and easy to like. Whether she's rocking her blue hair or being stronger than the guys.. she was just different and again, likeable. She also doesn't take shit from anyone and I absolutely loved this. She had a damn back bone which is kind of rare for main characters.
Now even though this book was beyond predictable.. the ending was kind of underwhelming. I feel like the author was like.. meh, the end. Then I'm left sitting here wondering if there's a secret chapter hidden within the book or something. Which made me think of cliffhangers and how I hate them so much. I will definitely be diving into the next book whenever I get my hands on it.
Overall, it was an entertaining book that had action, swoon-worthy guys, danger, and secrets. I feel like there were so many secrets to keep track of that I just ended up going with the flow because my brain couldn't compute anymore. Again, it was probably due to work frying my brain but oh well. I liked all of the characters so much. I would say love.. but I can't pick a favorite... yet.
This is a good tale, if an imperfectly written one. This makes my grading somewhere between 2.5 - 3. The story planning isn’t bad, but much of the sentence structure leaves a lot to be desired. This said, I still plan to try the next book to see what happens with the storyline.
Right from the beginning of the story. Evie has been fighting to stay alive for as long as she can remember due to the Protectors that keep coming for her. She's geared by many and that makes her a bad-ass in my book. I so enjoyed all the craziness and the good heart she has for everyone and I do want to get right to the next book to see what's going to happen next.
DNF - The writing is reminiscent of fanfictions; not the good ones but the ones written by very young teenagers who have yet to master their writing style and how to create a good story. I seem to have picked up a book with large following (people who are fans of this author and are willing to read anything she writes). Most of the 5 star reviews are from people who seem to enjoy this style of writing, and if that is the case - if this book is a taste of what this author is capable of - I will be staying far away from her work in the future.
I was already cringing at the first page and finally gave up on the book about 20% in and promptly fell asleep. Poor characterisation, poor dialogue, some of the worst world building I've ever encountered (this is why I was reminded so heavily of fanfiction: the absolute lack of writing ability and discipline).
I can understand why this type of story might appeal to some people. I'm also on the look out for a trashy guilty pleasure reverse harem book but this is beyond trashy, this is just poor quality and badly written.
Seriously!?! I don’t even know where to begin! Evie is my spirit animal. She takes no grief from anyone and will do anything for her chosen family. She flirts and fights with the guys like they belong together right from the get go. And don’t even get me started on the names that I didn’t even notice UNTIL THE VERY END!
Best world building ever!! Meet Evie an assassin who only became one out of necessity after being hunted her whole life. Things are fine until those in charge capture her to make her do them a favor. What follows is one incredible adventure as we get it know her and the group she has to travel with along several twists and turns only to hit one doozy of an ending. It was mind blowing to say the least. If you love incredible fantasy novels then you should do read this one. I loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.
Oh what a great start to a new trilogy! Evie is tough, smart and sassy, She is known as an assassin and she does not like many people. Forced to go into hell to rescue someone she meets 3 protectors and her life will never be the same again
Exciting from the start with a strong heroine, this story had twists and turns excitement and drama and was a fabulous read, looking forward to book two
This was a really quick upbeat RH read. Heroine Evie has been hunted as long as she can remember. With a young charge to protect Evie earns herself a badass reputation as a killer. Though tides change when her once enemies need her help and she must lead them through hell to find their peoples missing princesses. Evie is a very fun character and knows how to take care of herself. Her harem is a slow going process and I imagine things will start heating up soon. This audio was impossibly quick and very easy to follow.
DNF at 32% when Evie was about to take everyone to Hell for their mission.
The writing was very choppy with poor dialogue, and concepts were introduced with no warning or explanation which made following along the story very confusing. The FMC Evie was described to be a 25-year-old once the main story began, but she acted quite immaturely and irrationally for her age. When Evie and her foster child Hali were kidnapped by Protectors, Evie kept thinking about how sexy their captors were. That is definitely not a logical or appropriate thought to have while you're in that kind of situation, and I found it highly irritating and distracting. Additionally, the random info dumps from other characters to describe the world and their backstories didn't help make the story more compelling to me either.
I don't think this author is for me and will be avoiding her books in the future.
I wanted to like this book, and the whole series in fact. I couldn’t get through the second book. The insta-love is STRONG with this series. The characters met, had one little adventure together and suddenly the guys are falling all over the h. I think they maybe spent a day together? Or two? This is worse than the mates trope. The writing was too sparse, limited description and world building. The plot felt like it fell in our laps with no build up. It reads like a YA novel (though I’ve read many great and sexy YA books recently, so scratch that). I like a fast paced book, but this was too fast in all respects. I felt no connection to the characters as a result. Couldn’t care who lived or died, or who fell in love with who, and that is just a shame.
