“The best revenge is living well.”

I have mixed feelings about this book. I loved reading about how the relationship between Violet and Bella developed. They were both endearing and flawed which made them feel very real. Another reason I enjoyed this book is that the author has male characters with interesting, sensitive, and strong personalities. Often male characters in other books are unable to express their feelings and reluctant to show weakness. It is refreshing to read about compassionate and considerate men, exposing in-depth insight into their thoughts. Even the ones we think are scum.

It is well-written and engaging. A story of relationships, friendship and honesty in relationships. Samantha Tonge portrays the characters and their relationships in a compassionate and totally relatable way. This story is told with such empathy and even a little humour, it makes the characters seem even more real.

I debated between rating this three or four stars but ultimately settled on 3.5 because I felt that much of it was repetitive. I recommend it as a good beach read or for a lazy Sunday. I was able to stay drawn into the story and read it in one sitting. It's a solid 3.5 stars for me.

Favorite Quotes:

My first love was an assistant manager at the local bookshop where I had a Saturday job. It was then that I realised the most attractive thing about a man was the width of his reading list.

Uncle Kevin got headhunted. Sounds scary, doesn’t it? Makes me think of my favourite Horrid Henry story about cannibals. It means he got offered a job in America, the place where people eat bacon with pancakes, do cheerleading and own guns.

I need help persuading Farah that there is no health scare big enough to warrant switching to soya milk.

I have a habit of calling on people at the worst moment. Like when Gran’s in the middle of putting on her tights or my brother has just plastered his face with shaving foam.

If she were an item of stationery, she’d be a stapler. Uncomplicated and unassuming but holding everything together.

I try not to think about it. But when I look in the mirror, I worry. I worry that the woman staring back isn’t me. She’s a stranger and I can’t find an instruction manual.

My Review:

Knowing You was an exceptionally engaging and thoughtfully written tale. I was intensely absorbed and quickly entranced by the ever enticing and smoothly fluent flow of the writing as well as the captivating narrative. Ms. Tonge’s emotive and nimble writing style deftly hit all the feels while peeling back an elegant vulnerability of the highly sympathetic character of Violet at different ages and timelines. Her poignant storylines were ingeniously paced, cunningly crafted, vibrantly detailed, and adroitly evocative. I was so impressed I raced to Goodreads and added her entire backlist on my TBR.

In addition to a new favorite author to fangirl, I also garnered two new additions to my Brit Word List with bedsit – which appears to be what I know as a studio apartment, and collywobbles - which appears to have several meanings such as nervousness and/or a queasy stomach.

This was a compelling read packed with friendship, emotion, and depth!

This book was women’s fiction older wiser more jaded sister. A Book that starts with a whisper and ends in a scream! this was almost 2 books in one. The first half was light fluffy reading and then BAM things went a little sideways got a little dark a little deep. Sam Tonge Took on some serious topics in this book and she took them head on. She handled them with compassion and heart.

Violet has a pretty good life she works in publishing, has good Friends, and a loving boyfriend Lenny. When Lenny and she break up Violet is a little lost but she still has her lovely friends. When Bella her flatmate enters the picture that’s when things get a little wild in this book. Bella encourages Violet to change her image, but is Violet becoming the woman she was always meant to be? Or a completely different person? Not going to say any more than that this is a book best gone into with minimal knowledge, I had no idea what I was in for but I soon found out I was in for a treat! A treat with a side of oh no she didn’t!

The story jumps back-and-forth between 2001 and present and really gives you a comprehensive look into Violet’s life. Life has not always been easy for Violet and learning about her past really gave you an understanding of her present. I really liked Violet, I found her charming, kind, and sweet. Her friends were sweet and supportive and I really enjoyed the bond between all of them. This really is a book about self discovery and self acceptance something that is easier said than done.

This is a well told engaging story that will take you places you won’t be expecting to go! Recommend!

4☆ Emotive, Tense and Thought Provoking!

I'm a big fan of Samantha's books, so when I see she was writing something a lil darker I jumped at the chance to get my hands on a copy.

I have to admit it took me a lil while to get into the swing of this one as it was a slower pace.
But once I got into it I thoroughly enjoyed it.
It was more emotive and tense then dark which I adored.

Violet is an interesting character.
After splitting up with her long term boyfriend Lenny, she decides to give herself a change, with the influence of Bella her new flat mate, Violet is morphing into a whole new person. But is it for the better?

I loved the book club girls from the retirement home, they had so much fun and spirit. I seriously want to join their club, especially when there reading 'smut' lol
I can just imagine them sitting there reading the latest Mills and Boon Dare serie lol 😏

I really enjoyed the flashbacks into Violets childhood, it really added depth to her character as it made me feel empathy and relate to her more. I too was bullied all of my secondary schooling I hated school so much.

Knowing You is an emotive, thought provoking, and enthralling read that I couldn't wait to see what would happen next.
There was plenty of perfectly placed twists to keep you on your toes.
The Characters are relatable, very well developed and likeable.
For me the pace was a little slower that ramped up gradually toward the later half which created a dash of suspense and tension.

Knowing You is the perfect read if you enjoy women's fiction with a twist of tension and suspense.

Thank you to Rachel Random Resources for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Violet has never fitted in, she had been bullied at school. She is dating Lenny, has her dream job in publishing and runs a book club at the local retirement home. Then her relationship with Lenny breaks down. Violet seeks advice from her new flat mate, Bella. She changes her image, but her long term friends, Kath and Farah worry over Bella's influence. During Violets childhood her closest friend was a boy called Flint. Her mother did not approve of her friendship and he suffered a terrible end. She won't let the same thing happen to Bella.

The first half of the book lets us see what Violet is usually feeling and how the breakup with Lenny had affected her. We are also introduced to her friends. Violet is quite a likeable character even though she is a bit of an oddball. Some of the characters felt a bit flat. There are flashbacks to Violets childhood that helps the reader understand why she acts and feels like she does. Overall, a decent read.

I would like to thank NetGalley, Canelo and the author Samantha Tonge for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Violet is a terrific young woman who has almost everything she wants ... a great job in publishing, caring friends, and a boyfriend. Well not the boyfriend. She caught him cheating so he is gone. And with it, her self confidence.

Her new flat mate, Bella, aims to bring Vi's self confidence back. She gets Vi on an exercise plan, eating much healthier food ... and a lot less than she normally would. She talks her into buying new clothes as the pounds melt away. Changes her hair style. Pretty soon, she's almost unrecognizable. Her friends are really worried. She's moved away from her friends, until Bella is all that's left.

This is a story of metamorphosis in a woman who feels she is less than what she could be. Bullied as a young child by other school children has never been forgotten. She had one friend .. .a boy named Flint, who was her best friend, who understood Violet.

Her mother didn’t approve of Flint and he suffered a terrible end. Vi won’t let the same thing happen to Bella, no matter what anyone says...

KNOWING YOU is about friendships and knowing who to trust with your deepest darkest secrets. Violet is learning about taking control of her own life ... or is she?

This is a very well written story with credible characters. There are twists and turns that lead to an astounding ending.

Many thanks to the author / Canelo Publishing / Netgalley for the advanced digital copy of this Psychological Thriller. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

This novel took me by surprise and shook up my work schedule. There is no way I was able to concentrate on anything else before knowing what happened to Violet. If you are a fan of psychological thriller, you would see it coming I am sure. Since I am not, the ending left me astounded.
Being my first book by Samantha Tonge, I could very well say her popularity is well earned. The elegant diction tugs at your heartstrings and will sweep you off your feet. And what I loved most is the way it is set in the publishing industry giving us a very intimate picture of the editorial process. I have always wondered how it is to work as an editor - the passion, creativity and the happiness when your hands help to deliver a perfect book - and now I know. Thank you, Samantha, for the touching compliments on book bloggers that you have lavishly supplied in between the pages. I just couldn't help myself from glowing while reading those words.
The novel takes a dual narrative mode with Violet's present interspersed with the memories of her childhood. Bullied and alone in school, her only friend was Flint who instigated her to follow through her outrageous impulses. Effortlessly written, it won't take us much time to side with Violet in everything while she pulls through the betrayal of Lenny with the help of her new flatmate.
Altogether a brilliant piece of work that will thrill you and make you weep. Without any doubt, one of the best books of 2019.

To me this is a book of two halves - the first half gives us a feel for what Violet is normally like, how her break up for Lenny is affecting her, and about her job in publishing. We get to meet her friends and there is a lot of talk about books which I l always like.

Then the second half well from about 60% onwards I knew I couldn't put the book down, had no idea what was going on around me, as I was so utterly absorbed as everything seemed to move up a notch, and some of the things I was wondering about became slightly more confirmed, but at the same time shocking me.

Depending on your circumstances there are themes in this book that could be upsetting, but at the same time most likely will ring true for anyone going through the same things. I am not going to mention that big themes of the book though as I have no intention of spoiling anything for anyone.

In fact this is a hard book to review given to me all the best bits, the most impressive sections and the bits I'd love to shout about are all in the second half of the book, and work best if you have read it all, so rest assured its absolutely fantastic, and had me completely and utterly gripped.

The best comparison I have is to liken this to Amanda Prowse - in terms of really getting to grips with a tricky issue, writing about it in an accessible and sensitive way, making you really feel something for the characters involved, If this is the direction that Samantha Tonge is moving in, and it certainly seems that way after the last two books, then I can only look forward to seeing what she tackles next, as this was really impressive.

I loved the Violet worked in publishing, anything that gives me an insight as to how books are made / acquired etc.. always fascinates me, and I loved her friends at the retirement home book club that she runs have decided to set up a blog.

All the lighter moments of the book were equally well described and I really felt as though I was getting to know Violet, her new flatmate Bella and all of her friends and colleagues really well.

There were times where I really disliked Violet, she is someone who seems as though she is too easily led by others and seems to struggle to know her own mind. At times I wanted to, knock some sense into her,, and at others just give her a hug as she seemed so inexperienced too.

Interspersed with the present day story we get flashbacks of what life was like for Violet in 2001, when she was only 7. They added a lot of the book, and gave an idea of where some of Vi's personality traits evidently stemmed from.

If like me you love reading women's fiction, but also quite like reading darker books too - then this new dark women's fiction genre - and Knowing You in particular could be just what you are looking for. I certainly glad that I read it.

Thank you to Canelo and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

I wasn’t quite sure what I was getting myself into when I first started reading Violet’s story and I will admit, I didn’t quite like her in the beginning as Violet came off as a pushover. But, then something magical happened and I found myself really warming up to Violet as her story is slowly revealed. Violet is content with her life, her job in publishing, and with her boyfriend Lenny. Sure, they might not have the perfect relationship and have grown kind of distant as of late, but Lenny is her rock. But, once Violet finds out Lenny has cheated on her, her world comes crumbling down. It takes a new flatmate, Bella, to show Violet that she is worth more then the pity party she has bestowed on herself. Only, Bella’s intentions send Violet down a dark path. Will Violet ever truly find the person she truly is deep down inside?

Knowing You hits on so many issues women face in today’s society. Beauty standards have been set so high and many women feel as if they are not skinny enough or pretty enough. When Violet starts changing herself, I couldn’t help but wonder why. Why should someone change themselves to fit into some beauty standard that is often times unattainable. With flashbacks to Violet’s past, I can see why she needed the confidence boost and why she felt as if her life was spiraling out of control. Her past as a child is heartbreaking. This brings me to another issue Samantha Tonge brings to this book - that of bullying. I hate seeing anyone bullied especially a child and I can also understand Violet’s love of books also created a sort of escapism for her. Through everything Violet has been through I was really hoping she would find her way and in the process find who she was always meant to be. Violet is a good person. She loves books, has great friends, is in a book club with some older women and she has a great life even though she does not see it that way.

The story really pulled me right in and I loved the back and forth between past and present because I feel like it gave me a chance to really bond with Violet. Although, I may not have always been happy with her choices and as the story moves along you can see her spiraling. Tonge really adds a sense of realism to the story and it never felt like the story was not genuine. The pacing starts slower, but once Violet meets Bella this is when the story really takes off for me and I found myself really drawn in. Although, I really did not know where the story would lead me I never anticipated how dark it would get. I absolutely loved every minute of Knowing You and cannot find anything I disliked at all in this story.

Knowing You is brutally honest and emotionally gripping. Samantha Tonge brings forth some heavy topics and does it so realistically and beautifully. I can now see why Samantha Tonge is a fan favorite. I highly recommend this book especially if you love Women’s Fiction wrapped into a dark storyline.

3 ⭐ - this follows Violet who's getting over her ex Lenny, but is having a hard time doing this. When she gets a new roommate Bella, things seem to be looking up for Violet.

Violet hasn't had the best life so far after her recent struggles with her ex, there's also flashbacks of young Violet and her uncle. It's clear Violet had a tough time in life.

This was a well written story, with interesting characters and heavy topics. Although this is the first book I read from Ms. Tonge, I will check out her other books.

I started this book fully expecting it to be the usual story about a psychotic woman who moves into the home of the main character because she has devious plans to exact some sort of revenge because of something that the main character did or didn't do in the past. Well,I should really know by now,not to judge a book by its synopsis. Knowing You is a enthralling,thought provoking story that has some dark themes that,depending on their circumstances might upset some readers. But the author has written these themes in a realistic and sensitive manner.

This is the story of Violet,who's seemingly perfect life has just come tumbling down like a tower of books after she discovers that her boyfriend Lenny has been cheating on her. Hurt and alone,Violet seeks advice from her new flatmate Bella who encourages her to change her image,hold her head high and show Lenny that she doesn't need him.in her life to be happy and successful.

Violet's long term friends Kath and Farah are very concerned about her and are sceptical about Bella and her influence over Violet. But Violet doesn't want to listen to what her friends are trying to tell her and starts to distance herself from them. When Violet was a child, her only friend was a boy called Flint who encouraged her to stand up to the bullies at school. Violet's mum didn't approve of Flint and he met a horrible end. Violet is not going to let that happen to Bella, no matter what anyone else says...

The diverse cast of this character driven drama were all relatable,vivid and realistic. It made a refreshing change that the male characters were compassionate and considerate and not the uncaring,thoughtless characters that you normally encounter in books. There was a number of likeable characters,my favourites being Kath and the other members of the book club,Farah and Casey. I had mixed feelings about Violet,there was times when I disliked her and times when I felt so much empathy for her. Violet worked in publishing and being a avid book reader it was fascinating for me to read about how cut throat the world of publishing really is. I admit,as a reader, I take books for granted, you just read a book and then move onto the next one. You don't stop and think about all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes before us readers get to the read a book.

Interspersed throughout Knowing You was chapters that were set in 2001 when Violet was seven that gave the reader insight and a bit of understanding into why Violet feels and behaves the way that she does.

I thoroughly enjoyed this well written,emotional,thought-provoking story,from the first page,right through to the unexpected,jaw dropping conclusion. I honestly didn't want to put it down. This is the first book that I have read that was written by this author and it most definitely will not be my last. Very highly recommended by little old me.

Many thanks to Rachel Gibley and Canelo for the opportunity to read and review this emotional story and take part in the publication day blogblitz

OMG!! This is another amazing, riveting read from this very talented author. It is a story which deals with some issues in a very sensitive and caring manner but I don't want to reveal just what those issues are as that would spoil your enjoyment of the book!

This is the story of Violet Vaughan, who now works as an editor of children's books in a small publishing house, Thoth, and shares the impact of events from 2001, when she was seven years old, and the present day after she discovers her boyfriend has been cheating on her. It is a story of different friendships, about coping with events and taking control of them for your own advantage. It is about learning just who to trust - who has your best interests at heart and who is out for themselves. It is about self image, changing yourself and your outlook through your appearance, behaviour and expectations - but is this for yourself or to meet the expectations of others? Is the guidance of others accepting you and helping you improve or is it malicious manipulation with an unknown goal?

This is women's fiction at its best, with a decidedly dark element. I loved her friends from work and the retirement home and there are some laugh out loud moments so don't anticipate it being a doom and gloom read, it isn't. This is an emotive and thought provoking story, with plenty of surprises in store. I just didn't want to put it down - and that twist at the end, fantastic!

I requested and was gifted a copy of this book via NetGalley and this is my honest review after choosing to read it.

Bloody hell! Read this in about 5 hours, staying up til I finished at 1:30am.

Knowing You is a fantastic book! It's the story if Violet Vaughan, who works in publishing. After her break-up, she meets Bella and together, they begin a transformation from Shrinking Violet to Vi.

Her story is emotional and real and really gripping. The mix of secondary characters are great, particularly Kath and the ladies.

Violet's back story is deeply moving and I cried for her.

I was left gasping and with my jaw on the floor when I finished reading this book. Bloody loved it.

OMG! That what comes to mind during and after reading this wonderful book. I was so engrossed in it that I truely believe I would not have noticed a bomb going off beside me.

We follow happy Vi, having a job and a boyfriend she loves and being satisfied with the life she leads. But then lightning strikes and she finds herself heartbroken. In comes Bella, who is the perfect person to help Vi through it all. Is she such a good influence though?

The main part of the story takes place in the present, but the author takes us on a trip down memory lane as well where we meet a much younger Vi.

We see the changes Vi goes through and little by little the author reveals who Flint and Bella are …

This is a story that keeps you captivated the whole time. Never was there one part that was not interesting. It kept you in the dark about certain things, which I am not going to uncover of course. You just have to read it and experience it for yourself. You won’t regret it.

A 5 star rating for this emotional, heartbreaking story about the damage certain behaviour can bring about.

Thank you, Samantha Tonge and Rachel’s Random Resources.

Knowing You tells the story of Violet who works in publishing and is breaking up with Lenny her boyfriend, who has cheated on her . Full of grief, she turns to her new friend Bella who helps her turn her life around and gives her a new positive focus.

Violet's friends kath and Farah are concerned about her and are sceptical about Bella and her influence on Violet!

I loved how we read about Violets young life and this added depth to her character which gave the reader an insight into how her life had evolved.

The pressures facing woman today are definitely increasing , the need to fit in, to look a certain way and to portray a lifestyle that seems to have it all. With increasing social media use we find ourselves constantly comparing ourselves to others. This book makes you revalue these comparisons and realise no one has a perfect life and to put more thought into the true,yo important things and people in your life

I loved the characters in the book all so well written I could relate to them easily .Although I enjoyed the first half of the book it was the second half which had me gripped!! I was floored by the ending of the book, I honestly didn't see that coming!!! WOW!!

Thank you to Netgalley and Canelo for my chance to read this gripping, thought provoking book.

With thanks to Netgalley and Canelo for this ARC in exchange for an open and honest review.

Violet Vaughan had a comfortable but predictable life. Violet owned her own flat in London with her boyfriend Lenny, and had a interesting job as editor of children's fiction. On Valentines day Violet`s life shattered when she discovered that Lenny was having an affair with an editor from another publishing house.

Lenny moved out that same night leaving Violet confused and her self esteem at an all time low. Violet met Bella when she put an advert in the paper for a flat mate and they quickly became good friends, When Violet explained that Lenny left her for another woman, Bella decided she would give give her a makeover including diet and exercise.

As Violet slowly started to change, her old friends became worried and at one stage held an Intervention. Violet had come to rely on Bella for guidance and dismissed her old friends as jealous.

This book spans between the present and 2001 when she was bullied at school.

I expected Knowing You to be about a psychopathic flatmate. In fact the story was so much more than that, when Violet discovered Bella`s secret my whole world stopped turning for a second.

I love the characters in Knowing You especially Ellen her upstairs neighbour and the silver surfers from her book club. I liked both the old and new Violet and felt proud of her new look. It shows that there is a fine line between healthy living and complete destruction. I enjoyed the flashbacks to 2001 because it explained Bella`s lack of confidence.

There is so much more to this story then meets the eye, the ending was completely shocking. I highly recommend this five star read, I can't wait for Samantha Tonge`s next book.

I liked the overall message of the book about accepting yourself as you are. I also appreciate the depth and diversity of characters of different ages and backgrounds. I also enjoyed the setting of behind the scenes at a publishing house. Overall, it was just an OK read for me. I believe there are people out there who need to hear the message of the book and I hope it reaches them.

An abrupt change; a new friendship; a dark secret…
Kind-hearted Violet has never fitted in, but despite being bullied at school is now content. She is dating ambitious Lenny, has her dream job in publishing and runs a book club at the local retirement home.

However, when her relationship with Lenny begins to falter, Violet, hurt and alone, seeks the advice of her new flatmate, Bella. She changes her image and with her head held high aims to show that she doesn’t need Lenny in her life to be happy and successful.

This is the first book that I’ve read by Samantha Tonge and I feel even from looking at the cover compared to her other publications – that it’s a very different style for her to write.

It’s hard to review a fabulous book such as this without giving away the punchline. But I’ll try hard not to! I was gripped from the start – as well as frustrated. Frustrated for what the main protagonist was doing to herself – but it didn’t make me dislike her character. Instead I saw how easy it was for a likeable easy going person to fall into a trap that so many of us are absolutely certain we would never fall into.

“My first love was an assistant manager at the local bookshop where I had a Saturday job. It was then that I realised the most attractive thing about a man was the width of his reading list.”

Samantha Tonge traverses a very difficult subject with ease and without judgement. That’s what made this book so special in my opionion. You may have an inkling throughout that you know where this book is going – and it’s very cleverly done. But the scary thing is, that this is how it happens in real life too.

“I try not to think about it. But when I look in the mirror, I worry. I worry that the woman staring back isn’t me. She’s a stranger and I can’t find an instruction manual.”

This novel flits between past and present to bring together the person that makes Violet who she is today. It’s a tricky style to master but is done extremely well throughout this book – having us leap to conclusions and then reel ourselves in all over again at various moments.

A thought provoking and emotional book. I was not prepared at all for what it a lot of more than your standard 'chick- lit' /women's fiction - I was engrossed throughout, what a brilliantly written tale of the fragility of relationships, friendships and control.

Violet , our main character, is really likable and relatable. She thinks of herself as an odd ball who doesn't quite fit in or deserve any of the good things in her seemingly happy, comfortable life. She is a normal - kind hearted girl, loved by those around her and is admired for who she is. Only problem being that she doesn't see it.

The breakdown of her relationship with Lenny is the catalyst for her examining every part of her life and deciding that she needs to stop being the oddity, she needs to be better ao to compete with the type of women Lenny now wants to be with.

I enjoyed the use of flashbacks - helping to understand the reasoning and details of why Violet feels and acts how she does. To see how the issues she struggles with have deep seated roots.

The additional characters in the book are interesting. Some characters are the people she needs - the ones that stick by her no matter what; some are the people she desires - although they aren't necessarily the ones who want the best for her and are people she could do without. I liked how the friendships Violet had remained strong, how she had people on her side throughout.

Admittedly, I had my suspicions about certain elements of the book but I was still surprised and shocked. I'm not giving anything away - but I was pleased the twists were there. I think it's important to have a book like this around in today's climate.

Some may find it a tough read, it's emotional and quite hard in some parts. Don't get me wrong, it's not all dark and gloomy, but it is a read that will have you hooked until the end. It tackles some difficult, but realistic themes but Samantha Tonge has done so in a careful way, sensitively where you feel connected to the character and emotionally involved.

My first Samantha Tonge read and definitely not my last.

Violet has just had a broken heart. She was dating Lenny, someone that worked with her in the world of publishing, and that has fallen apart. Violet has a new flatmate, Bella, who gives her a lot of advice so she begins to change her life. As a child, Violet had very few friends. Not so as an adult. She has two long-time friends Kat and Farah, who are very concerned with her when she starts making sudden changes in her life.

The story goes back and forth to when Violet was a child. As such, her mother desperately tried to break up her friendship with someone she was very close to at the time, Flint. Things did not go well on that end as Violet grew older. Now her friends are not approving of her relationship with Bella. So Violet must learn to balance out her friendships and learn not to allow them to destroy herself in the process. Time will tell if Violet will regain control over her own life.

As mentioned, Violet is involved in publishing, as is Lenny. She is also now running a book club. It was very interesting when it came to all of the book talk. The switch between past and present was also intriguing as it gave a great introspective into Violet's personality. I could only hope that Violet could wake up.

Is there a message in this book for us to take away? By all means. Love yourself for who you are. Do not try and fit into the mold that others set before you. Thank you, Samantha Tonge, for doing that.

Many thanks to Canelo and to NetGalley for this ARC to review in exchange for my honest opinion,

Enjoyable book

Violet a junior editor and lenny a literary agent both work in the book publishing world. Beatrix Bingham a writer likes younger men. A text on lennys phone on Valentine's night changes their relationship for good. Violet is devastated and tells lenny to leave and have a happy life with his trixie. Where did she go wrong? This book takes us back and forth from violets childhood to today. It is full of humour romance and all things booky. I really enjoyed this book

I really enjoyed this book from Tonge because it wasn’t your standard post-break-up novel, instead offering something with a bit more edge to it. I felt invested in how Violet coped after she is dumped by her boyfriend and I thought it was interesting how much of Violet’s past has shaped the present day narrative.

The story occasionally flashes back to Violet’s childhood and the more you read of Violet as an adult, the more you realise how events in the past continue to impact her. She was particularly lonely as a child and I sympathised with how little understood she was by her mother. This lack of understanding appears to have continued into the present and this explains why she latches on to her new flatmate, Bella, who drives Violet to reinvent herself.

However, this reinvention is not just a reaction to her relationship ending. Bella is trying to show Violet that her actions all lead to self love and becoming a happier person. Violet cannot help but agree, even when it comes to acting underhand in her career. This was another aspect to the book that I really enjoyed: seeing Violet work in the publishing world.

Tonge presents this environment as cut throat as agents are fighting to get claim on the next big book. Violet’s publishing house is presented as rather accepting yet, Violet’s personal nemesis, Beatrice, seems to use any trick in the book to get the authors and agents she wants. This triggers Violet’s own reinvention and whilst it drives Violet to step out of her comfort zone, it is evident she does not have all the facts that she thinks she does.

This was a well-written story where I felt drawn into the narrative to see how Violet would evolve. Although she seems happy at the start of the book, it is her break-up that encourages more drive and even some ruthlessness. However, even Violet begins to realise that what she thought was making her happy was not a true reflection of who she was. Ultimately, the key to happiness is being true to yourself.

I am a fan of this author and love reading her work. This book was somewhat different, however, to her usual work.

The story starts well and I quickly become emotionally involved in Violet’s story. She is a complex character going through a difficult time in her life due to a breakup. We see her life as it is now as well as flashbacks to her childhood. The flashbacks contain clues as to what is going on and I had actually guessed where the story was going before the author gave it away. However, this did not spoil my enjoyment of the story.

This is a well written story which, I believe, gives a fantastic insight into certain elements of many people’s lives and which may well help those struggling with the same issues as the character in the book.

Huge thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing a copy,

First, thank you to NetGalley and Canelo publishing for an advance copy.

The book started out great. Samantha does a great job of introducing each character, especially main character Violet. As a reader you become very invested in Violet’s life, especially when you begin to learn everything she has been through as a child. It is great to see how as an adult Violet has a successful career and personal life. Although as an adult she also has her ups and downs, it was nice to see her gaining confidence to move forward.

I will say this, once the book reached its end, it takes an unexpected turn. I can see how these things can happen in real life, but as far as the flow of the story, I think if it would have been introduced earlier it would have made more sense and not caught the reader off guard. It would have also given the reader enough time to process what ended up happening to Violet.

I still recommend this as a must read, especially if you are a Samantha Tonge fan.

Knowing You by Samantha Tonge
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For me, this was a wonderful and engrossing book that I found difficult to put down. This book explored many difficult subjects, sensitively dealing with issues based around bullying, anxiety, self-esteem, loss and grief, amongst others. It was very emotional and melancholic in places but was also filled with hope. I loved the complexity of some of the characters and following their personal stories. The twist was very unexpected.
I loved this sensitive and emotive book. Highly recommended.
I received a complimentary digital copy of this novel, at my own request, from Canelo via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
Knowing You tells the story of Violet, a junior editor who goes through a breakdown following a break up with her boyfriend Lenny over an intimate text she finds on Lenny's phone from a successful book editor. Hurt, she gets a new flatmate, Bella, and soon they develop a camaraderie. But Violet's friends Kath and Farah think she's not coping very well with the break-up. Kath encourages Violet to seek help. Though the story was hard to follow, I enjoyed it. The characters were interesting and relatable. Would recommend this book.
