The fifth adventure in the enormously popular Dory Fantasmagory series takes on the tried-and-true theme of childhood friendships, and turns it on its head, Dory-style.
When her big sister Violet has friend trouble at school, Dory tries to come to her rescue. But Dory's active imagination takes over, and she is sure that Violet's lost treasure (a friendship bracelet) has something to do with pirates. In search of the treasure, Dory meets up with a real pirate crew and finds that a pirate's life is harder than she thought. At sea, Dory longs for her imaginary friend Mary. But Mary has gone off with an exciting new friend of her own and Dory is crushed with jealousy. Just when things can't get any worse, Dory's old enemy, Mrs. Gobble Gracker shows up and Dory's ocean adventure takes a surprising turn.
There's a ton of treasure in Dory's fifth adventure as Dory mixes in pirates, pals (real and make-believe), and her own imagination into one wild and wet free-for-all.

I adore Dory and so does my nine year old son. She is funny, crazy and unpredictable. She continues to be the same even in this fifth book.
I love the way the book talks about the problems of friendship and the feeling of jealousy. What is important is that the book does so without being didactical.
The author teaches kids by making Dory to have the same problems and to feel the same feelings as her bigger sister. It doesn't propose what is "good" or "bad".
Vis dėlto "Nenuorama Dorė skrajoja padebesiais" man patiko labiau.
Dory Fantasmagory is my favorite early chapter book series. It is so funny, and it "gets" kids so well. I highly recommend any book in the series- it works as a read-aloud or as an independent read. Bonus points to Tiny Tough for having a hilarious scene set in a public library.
Dory's imagination just gets wider and larger in this 5th book of the series!
Mom thinks it is time for Dory to come up with some new games to play and leave her imaginary friends (and enemies) behind. Dory, who is on a real pirate kick, is fine with that if she can have the, long discontinued, toy Tubtown. She spends her bath imagining she is on a Pirate ship when her old enemy Mrs. Gobble Gracker shows up to kidnap her. This time Dory joins forces with her old foe. Meanwhile, her imaginary best friend Mary is creating imaginary friends of her own, Violet is having friendship issues (which Dory is very concerned about), and Mr. Nuggy gets very confused during opposite day. Needless to say, this book is a flight of fancy!
I always enjoy Dory's truly believable antics, and this time I was delighted to see her getting along with her siblings. She showed so much love and concern for her older sister, and this time she got a little back.
This was a GREAT time. The Dory books are always hilarious, but I howled with laughter so much during this one that I started to feel a little bit out of control. Abby Hanlon understands imaginative kids amazingly well, and this book is full of creative leaps, classic kid assumptions, and utterly convincing silliness. I could read this over and over again and not get tired of it.
So funny. Can you imagine teaching money in class, and one of your students believes she is a pirate and wants all the "money"? She has her first sleep over and it is very entertaining. I wish all kids didn't play video games and used their imaginations like Dory.
Another adorable (and legitimately funny) chapter book for young readers! I loved this! It was so fun and made me actually laugh…you can tell this author spends a lot of time with actual super imaginative kids. I love that Dory’s pretend playing was influenced by her sister’s troubles with friends.
I always laugh out loud at least a few times in every short and charmingly illustrated Dory Fantasmagory book. The whole series is worth reading-- but start with number 1. You won't regret spending time with Dory, Mary, Mrs. Gobble Gracker and Mr. Nuggy!
This entry in the Dory Fantasmagory series is pirate themed as Dory navigates her imaginary friend having a new friend, while in real life sister Violet is having friend issues. Dory is the same as ever arriving at the library with her mother one day and giving a long convoluted description of what must be several different books to the librarian and asking if they have that book. My kids love this series, which includes illustrations on most pages and speech bubbles.
Author Abby Hanlon has written and illustrated a quick-paced early chapter book that is full of imagination and creativity. The dialogue is quick and right out of real life in a family with three young kids all needing attention at the same time. DORY, the younger sibling creates mischief but not because she is a bad kid, not at all. She is a fierce little human full of curiosity and determination. A pied piper of sorts stirring up younger children in a library, This is a must-read for young readers.
I'd read this again today, but there is a library hold on this copy and I have to return it today. Luckily, there are other books in the DORY series for me to check out.
Dory Fantasmagory is my favorite book series. It's so funny and it "gets" kids so well. I highly recommend any book in the series. Bonus points to Tiny Tough for having a hilarious scene set in a public library. *************************************
Forza Dory all'arrembaggio!!!
Another edition to the Dory series. This one I felt was more on par with the first and second books in terms of humor. My husband and I enjoyed this one as much as our kids did.
What I really appreciated about this book was how Dory and Violet really connect in this one. Dory seems to grow up a bit in it, by having a conflict with Mary, joining sides with Mrs. Gobble Gracker and protecting her sister.
Having two daughters myself, I really appreciate that Dory was trying to protect and help her sister throughout this book, even if Violet didn't appreciate it at first. The ending was very touching and I could see this series ending here.
I actually thought the pirate themes with Mrs. Gobble Gracker were fun as well, and then also how Mary's imaginary friend played in to the whole situation. Overall, I really enjoyed this one and we've really enjoyed this series. I'm hoping to find more series like this to read to my kids.
