3.5 really fast paced and a bit of a plot and character overload in an effort to connect the whole story. I definitely think I’d rate it higher on a reread when I’m better able to spot all the Easter eggs in each story

One thing that really recommends a book to me is some relation to fairy tales. Ludwig Revolution is a manga which has many such retellings, such as Snow White, Cinderella, The Sleeping Beauty, Hansel & Gretel and Red Riding Hood. In the past, I had read another manga, called Grimms Manga, attempting the same thing but I was rather disappointed. Luckily, this wasn't the case here, although I have to admit that I didn't expect what I got to read.

Prince Ludwig along with his loyal servant Wilhelm go on a journey, in order to find a suitable wife for the prince. Naturally, most of those maids happen to be the well-known characters from the fairy tales. Each princess/character has at least a chapter that develops her story. But like the originals the stories take dark and twisted turns. Nothing is like it seems and no-one is as virtuous as was expected. Indeed, Ludwig himself has a tendency towards necrophilia, Snow White sleeps with her father, Red Riding Hood killed her parents and Hansel and Gretel are assassins.

Kaori Yuki to jedna z najbardziej znanych twórczyń mrocznego, gotyckiego shoujo.
A tutaj baśniowych postaci mamy zatrzęsienie: od Królewny Śnieżki, Śpiącej królewny i Kopciuszka aż do Jasia i Małgosi i Czerwonego Kapturka.

I‘m not crying. I just have Lui and Idike in my eyes.

The final (at least for a while m) volume of Ludwig Revolution and it mostly delivers. It’s a crazy finale to set up storylines and leaves room for eventual continuation.

For me, despite my massive enjoyment of the world and characters and Kaori Yuki‘s gorgeous artwork, this is the weakest out of the four original volumes. I mean it doesn’t say that much considering it’s still easily a 4 Star read.

While twists in the volume, Julius's identity and Dorothea‘s backstory, as well as the reveal of Lui‘s mother a great, the story itself feels incredible rushed and a tad convoluted at times.

While everything that’s been set up is mostly resolved, the resolutions seem too easy and a lot of it happens through tons of exposition.

The finale is also oddly placed, because the story that has more of a finale feel to it (Ludwig vs Petronella and Julius) is resolved in the second act of the story and the "real“ finale is the Lui‘s, Will‘s and Lisette‘s mission to rescue Dorothea. While I don’t mind the bait and switch, the execution doesn’t completely work.

I still enjoy most of this volume (obviously) and it’s sad to see those characters go.

Reading all the volumes at once and years later also makes it obvious to me how this was never intended to be a longer series. Compare the rest of it with the original one shot and you notice how different the characters (especially Lui) were and that he was obviously slightly altered to appear more as a good guy and hero to root for than the disturbing psychopath from the beginning.

Whatever. I don’t regret re-reading this series. It mostly still holds up and is still one of my favorites.

Ludwig Revolution: 4 Stars
[6.88 - really great!]

This was an amazing finale. I fell for this squad completely and the ending was perfect.
(one bit of wording was done very badly though- in terms of gender and pronouns - but it wasn't malicious/horrendous - just worded badly - and it may be wrong but 2007 had different standards)

The first chapter in this one... DAMN. I thought this might turn out to be a 5 Star Volume - but as much as enjoyed every chapter it is more of a 4 over all. I highly highly enjoyed this though.
Kaori Yuki herself points out at the end of this volume that Ludwig did have a bit of a character change between volumes 1 and 2 - and I totally see that but it is for the better and I personally wasn't bothered by it. It also wasn't an intense different - but a slight one.

Most of the ending felt a bit rushed, but the "real" ending was very lovely and brought a tear to my eye.

SPOILERS

Seeing Lui Will and Dorthea all together at the end, just like as the story began ready to go do it all again felt very satisfying

I honestly didn’t like this. I just feel extremely disappointed. Kaori Yuki seems to have this problem where she starts a series with so much potential, only for it to fall apart in the latter volumes. She needs to just stick to macabre/horror anthology type of mangas because she excels when it comes to short stories vs. long drawn out plotlines. For a while, I couldn’t quite pinpoint what it was that was bothering me about this manga, but the author’s note at the very end basically laid it all out for me. It pretty much suffered from the same issues that ‘Godchild’ did. Both were so wonderfully dark, but they ended up being ruined by attempts to make this epic type of plotline. I wish that she had just stuck to what was great about the series. Even the author mentioned that Ludwig was a completely different person by this final volume and that the story had changed from its dark roots. The first volume of this was so amazing and around the third volume it went downhill. Looking back, I missed that crazy ass Ludwig from the beginning who kept corpses of girls in glass cases and the horribly dark aspects like the chapter about Snow White.

I think that the story stopped being fun the minute it was overloaded with all these convoluted plotlines. I don’t know why you’d throw all these complicated situations in when you could cut out half of those things and still have a wonderful story. Twists are fun. However, there were 500 things happening and there wasn’t enough time to make each part shine. Like, I wasn’t shocked or blown away by anything. I was just confused because all these things seemed to come out of nowhere. I had no clue what was going on or what any of these people’s motivations were. Sometimes they teamed up and sometimes they wanted to kill each other. The sides people chose were so inconsistent. By the time there was that reveal about , I was just so done and mentally checked out. The constant unnecessary twists and storylines weren’t executed well and it just got really tiring.

Ludwig Fantasia dibuka dengan cerita The Little Mermaid - yang mana, nggak angst sama sekali.

There was kind of character overload at the end, wasn't there? Or was that just me? I felt that way about Angel Sanctuary, too, though. Anyway, although this series was probably better in the beginning, if the author decided to write more volumes, I would definitely check them out. I believe she could successfully revive it. She seems passionate enough about it.
