I think I have a new favorite book by this author.

Lizzy and Thomas had an idyllic life. Until it came crashing down. Now Lizzy must make some hard choices if she is to protect Thomas and herself. She will have to stay on her toes (so to speak) if she's going to stay ahead of those who are trying to force her and her brother to fates differently than they had always planned.

I thought this book had a great cast of characters. We have our main heroine, our main hero, family members of each, our dastardly duo of devious characters, the sweet and charming dog (ok it's not really a big character but makes a couple very minor appearances), a lonely and empty cabin in the woods (again not really a major character-or character at all but it made my list) and plenty of minor supporting characters, mainly the servants of the manors. The combination of all these characters and their interactions created a well thought out story.

Plenty of peril, escaping, storms, horses, danger, hiding, treasure hunts, hidden identities, little white lies (for the sake of protection), family drama, sorrow, hope, secret plans, friendship, bad guys, love, broken hearts, love, daring rescues, and of course love again (what's a happily ever after without some sweet love story throughout the book-hence the repeating love).

I was hooked with this one that I found myself listening along when I couldn't be reading. Lots of driving around the last couple days which made it a good way to enjoy the book as well. If you haven't read any books by this author I would definitely recommend trying out one or all of them. This one is definitely my favorite but in no way does that declaration diminish my enjoyment of the other novels by her.

I really liked the ending. I predicted that would probably be the outcome throughout the whole book and gave myself a little pat on the back for guessing right. I don't think all readers would guess the outcome, but I've read a few books...just a few. Lol! All in all though, I enjoyed it! The sweet love story was very tender and sweet. I loved anytime the hero made an appearance. Pssst...so did Lizzie. *giggling*

Content: Clean. A few moments of peril. A couple very mild innuendos. Some kissing but nothing further.

I received a copy from the publisher, Covenant Communications, via NetGalley. As well as listened through my Deseret Bookshelf subscription. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

I really hate it when greedy people take advantage of orphans.

Lizzy runs from her family home with her younger brother. He Uncle has taken possession of the estate and is shipping off her brother to serve as a cabin boy on a ship. Lizzy cannot allow that to happen so she plots her escape.

What would you do for someone you love? In this case, Lizzy is willing to sacrifice everything to protect her brother. He is all the family that she has left and she cannot let him be put in danger on a ship. Her Uncle is a violent man who has made their life miserable.

Their adventure takes them to the small town of Hillcrest. It is there that Lizzy finds protection at Everly Manor. The interactions between Lizzy and Barton are precious. Lizzy has secrets and is not willing to give them up. She fears that she will be forced to return to the care of her Uncle and her brother shipped off to sea. She is not sure who or what she can trust. This leads her into danger.

Barton is an honorable and just man. He has always been an advocate for the downtrodden. He wants nothing more than to protect Lizzy and Thomas. Getting Lizzy to trust him is the main battle that he faces.

This book is sweet. It is one that I wanted to keep reading and find out if there is a "happy ever after" for the characters. I enjoyed them and the rural setting.

I loved the unique plot in this Regency romance! The characters are memorable and I loved Barton and Lizzy's interactions, even if their misunderstandings were frustrating at times. There is a strong supporting cast of characters that rounded out the story, and I enjoyed the family dynamics and evidence of their devotion to one another. Lizzy is so protective of her brother, and Barton is full of compassion for the both of them, making him a perfect hero! The setting of the small village was idyllic and the adventure made the pace of the book move steadily forward.

Lizzy has gumption, there's no doubt about that. In an effort to save her younger brother from being sent to sea, while she is forced to marry an odious man, Lizzy and her brother run away. And I loved what happened next.

Lizzy and Thomas discover an abandoned cottage and settle in during a storm. They're so resourceful and that, combined with the camaraderie of this small village, charming personalities, and a delightful mistaken identity, drew me right into the depths of this story. There's such a warmth to this book that really evokes a nostalgic feeling (think Boxcar Children, Regency style).

I loved the bond between these two siblings and although the lengths Lizzy went to at times were aggravating, the love and care she has for Thomas is endearing. Mr. Barton is a charming addition to the story, as his generous heart is so similar to Lizzy's. Misunderstandings block the path to love in this tale full of adventure and danger, making it a perfect recipe for a highly enjoyable story.

Content: some mild violence/moments of peril; mild romance

I just want to crawl into this book and live there awhile! They both live in upper social class but both of these main characters have a way of bridging those classes and helping to make everyone have a happy life. Well except for the main characters themselves anyway! Haha

Speaking of the main characters… They both are good and strong people! Their families each have their own issues. Lizzy’s parents die and her and her brother are orphaned and find themselves under their evil Uncle’s care. He is evil! He is selfish! And he wants everything and could care less for Lizzy or her brother. So, they run away! Barton's family, that the runaways find themselves living with due to an accident, loves Barton but they are also protective and may go a bit too far in their protection! But they love each other regardless!

Lizzy is prideful, stubborn, and will do whatever it takes to save her brother! Lizzy literally runs into Barton one day and he is immediately smitten with her. Lizzy however, remains aloof and secretive. Barton introduces himself as Barton and Lizzy immediately thinks he is Mr Barton not Barton Everly, who is Master of Everly Manor. He does not correct her and wants her to trust him. Neither are starting off on the right foot for that. But as the truth comes out, as it always does, you would think that would be it and they would confess their undying love and live happily ever after but that is not how this book goes. It has several little twists to get to that point and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

So if you like books that have evil villains, stubborn pride, doing what you think is right and sacrificing your happiness for another’s, strong family bonds, horses, puppies, family jewels, servants, gruff servants, meddling family members, and finding happiness after thinking it would never be possible, then this might be for you! As for me, I’m still smiling! (And can I have a Barton too?)

From the very first moments of this book, I knew I was going to love Lizzy. She is determined, loyal and courageous. Her devotion to her brother was so endearing and I swear I could just feel her frantic desire to protect him. I was right there with her. And Barton? Yeah, I really loved him too. Kindness is one of the most attractive qualities in a man, I think. Barton was ever so kind and a born protector. I loved that. And him. Did I say that already?

Sometimes regency books can be a little placid in nature but not this story. I loved that from the very beginning there was tension and that feeling of intensity that kept building. I could feel that things were going to explode at some point but I just didn't know how. It was awesome. The ending was so satisfying. Take that, bad guys!

I really enjoyed this one. I read through it quickly because I just didn't want to put it down.

Content: mild violence, peril, kissing

For readers of Carolyn Miller and Josi S Kilpack comes a thoughtful regency that balances familial ties with the promise of romance. Well-researched and written with a voice that understands the limited agency of a woman in the period, there is a wonderful sense of setting and verisimilitude to counter the moments of suspense and eventual love.

If you like hidden identity pieces a la Julie Klassen and the threads of suspense akin to Sarah E. Ladd, then you will enjoy the well-woven narrative that turns the reader's heads toward tension and slow-build romance with lovely grace and romantic pay off.

I also quite enjoyed the focus on the relationship between Lizzy and her younger brother Thomas: a unique slant to a genre which usually finds us consumed by the hero and heroine.

This started out ok. The writing was not great. I could tell right away this was not an experienced author. I kept reading because it wasn't too bad in execution just lacked feeling and depth. I got into the story and kept reading but by the end I was pretty frustrated with the leading lady who was odd and turned into the biggest problem in the story. By the end if I were Barton I would have thrown up my hands and let her alone. Geez. This is a clean regency romance but takes place in the country. Clean with some kisses.

Chalon Linton is still a fairly new author to me, but I really liked A Tangled Inheritance and found the cover to this one intriguing, so I submitted my request to NetGalley and was happy to be approved.

When Lizzy Stafford's step-mother and father are killed in a carriage accident, she and her younger brother Thomas become pawns in their Uncle Cline's quest for their inheritance. He's now their legal guardian and plans to send Thomas (who's only nine) off to join the crew of a merchant vessel, the Vendetta (an apropos name), and have Lizzie wed Mr. Rudyard Simpkin, who's more than twice her age!

Lizzie hatches a plan to escape from their greedy and overbearing uncle. Things don't quite go as she planned because uncle sends a footman to travel with them to Ipswich where the Vendetta is moored. They end up finding shelter in an abandoned cabin and stay a few days eating what food they have and berries found on the property. Lizzie finally has to go to the nearest village and that's where she literally runs into Barton Everly. He tells her his friends call him Barton and she assumes he's Mr. Barton. Later she finds out he's Barton Everly of Everly Manor.

Barton Everly is a kind, generous, man. A true gentleman in every sense. He learned from his father to care for those less fortunate, so when he finds out that Lizzie and Thomas are staying at the cabin on his property he wants to help them.

There are so many adjectives to describe Lizzie--headstrong, stubborn, prideful, but she's also very loving, loyal, and brave. Because someone who should have watched over and protected her and Thomas (her uncle) did exactly the opposite, Lizzie is overly cautious and not trusting of Barton and his family.

I don't want to spoil anything but just as I thought everything was going to work out, something I didn't plan on happens. What?!! Thankfully it all works all in the end. This book has everything--the evil, greedy relative, the odious man the young woman is to marry, the handsome wealthy hero, jewels, a kidnapping plot, and an adorable dog!

This is a clean romance. There are some scenes of mild peril.

Thanks to Covenant Communications and NetGalley for my copy to read and review. All thoughts and opinions in this review are mine.

I was excited to read Chalon Linton's new historical romance, Escape to Everly Manor. I've enjoyed her books in the past and this one sounded really good!

Lizzy and her brother Thomas lose their parents in an accident and their Uncle Cline inherits the estate along with becoming their guardian. He is cruel and unbending, planning to send Thomas to sea and marry Lizzy off to an old man as quickly as possible. Lizzy makes the choice to take Thomas and run---but where will they go? After a daring escape, they find an old abandoned cabin and stop there until Lizzy can make other arrangements. But when she goes into town for food, she meets handsome Mr. Barton who makes an unforgettable impression---on her heart. Though he seems kind and anxious to help, Lizzy doesn't trust him. Yet, when they're found out and her uncle is set to carry out his nefarious plans. Lizzy is torn between love and loyalty and she must make a choice before time runs out.

I really enjoyed the character of Lizzy and her growth throughout the book. She faces some really difficult trials and always tries to do what's best. Her selflessness sometimes goes to the extreme, but after losing her parents, her devotion to her brother is understandable. Thomas was cute and stole his scenes, and the supporting cast of servants and other family rounded out the story with an unexpected depth of feeling. (Bethany and Thomas were adorable!) But the best part of the book was Barton, our hero. He has a heart of gold, which he puts on the line again and again as he slowly unravels all of Lizzy's secrets. I loved how tender and sweet he was to both Lizzy and Thomas and his courage at the end. My only complaint was the editing in this book. This publisher is usually quite good, which is why I was so surprised! The editing mistakes definitely took me out of the story and were mostly homonym errors, like using dawned when it should be donned, reigned when it should be reined, too/to, and waiver/waver to mention a few. There were so many of those throughout the entire book, it really was distracting. But the story does overcome the editing errors overall and I thought this was an enjoyable read with all the feels at the end.

Absolutely loved this book! Lizzy is a take charge kind of woman and was easy to cheer on. I love how she protected her brother Thomas from her cruel uncle. Paired with Harrison Everly, who was completely swoon-worthy IMO, and I just couldn't put this book down. Highly recommend for Regency romance lovers.

Eeeeepppp!!! This is pure, classic Regency Romance with all the tropes I love to indulge in from time to time. Damsel in distress heroine. Dashing hero to the rescue. Vile villain. Ogre-ish guardian. Plot oozing with peril. And, of course, a sweet romance.

Lizzy's stubbornness (mutinously so at times) gets her into all kinds of trouble as she attempts to hide and protect her brother. Ill prepared for subterfuge, she struggles to maintain a 'cover story' that rings true and everything begins to unravel after one dark and stormy night. Bwahahaha!

Barton is the kind of swoonalicious hero who belongs in a Regency Romance. He is not the brooding kind, however. Far from it, as his kind nature and acts of charity attest to. He's the worthiest of trustworthy heroes but, alas, Lizzy is still wary. (I mentioned stubborn in relation to this miss already, haven't I?)

Their love story unfolds by way of mistaken identities, miscommunication and the threat of encroaching danger. All punctuated by sweet, flirty scenes of burgeoning romance. And I think that makes it the perfect take-me-away-from-reality read.

I listened to the audible edition narrated by Aubrey Warner. I found it extra delectable to escape into her storytelling vibe. :-)

Hands down Linton’s best yet! This cover is perfect for the story. Everything and I mean everything is in the plot - you couldn’t ask for a more gripping edge of your seat tale of events.

Elizabeth and Thomas are left to deal with an abundance of unknowns and fears after the death of their parents & it seems the ruthless Uncle is out to destroy them.

Harrison Everly is all that’s just and true, with enough dashing good looks to make you swoon. He may be who Elizabeth needs to help her. Or, perhaps she will just want to fight this battle on her own.

I just loved this story. Even the minor details, which to me, are very important to get right - like language and phrases - were there.

I’m so desperately hoping we get to revisit the Everly family and see where Franklin’s life is headed.

You won’t regret picking this one up. Fantastic.

3.5⭐️s.....This was a easy short read that transported me to romance and away from my daily worries.
The story starts off in England during the 1800s where death and hardship were commonplace. Elizabeth has lost both parents and has only a cruel uncle to see after her. She must try to protect herself and her brother and doesn’t know who to trust.

Things I loved about the book.
*Barton and how he loved people.
*HEA
Things I didn’t like.
*The uncle
*The constant running.

This book is my first Net galley read and I’m so excited about this.. I want to tell everyone I know about reading and always try to be as honest as possible with each review.
Happy Reading! ❤️

I loved Escape to Everly Manor! It was full of adventure and secrets, but also a very sweet romance. The hero Barton (a name I am partial to, I'm not going to lie) was strong and protective in the best ways. And Lizzy was brave and always tried to do what was best for others. Some great swoony scenes which can be hard to get into a sweet Regency, but Chalon wrote them beautifully. So glad I finally got the chance to read this one (in one sitting, I might add!)

This was my first time reading a book by this author and I’ve found a new amazing Regency author! I thoroughly enjoyed this story and am looking forward to reading more by her.

I loved the elements of adventure and hints of danger in this book. This Regency romance occurred away from the fancy ballrooms and gossipers of city life and society, which I really liked. The two main characters, Lizzy and Barton, were fantastic protagonists. I loved how determined Lizzy was and she had courage and honor in spades. Barton was the epitome of goodness and gentleness, but I loved seeing how riled up he got over his feelings for Lizzy and her and her brother’s welfare.

I really enjoyed the little details the author added to the setting and supporting characters- there were many that I loved. The relationship between Lizzy and her brother Thomas was especially sweet.

I couldn’t put this book down and read it in less than a day, and I can’t wait to see what the author writes next!!

The plot of Escape to Everly Manor pulled me in right from the very beginning. Everything about it was amazing! I loved the peril, the characters, the setting and the adventure.

Lizzy is such a strong young woman. She thinks about things and how she will make them work to her advantage. I loved her unselfishness as well. She would do anything to protect her younger brother Thomas, and she proves that over and over. I loved the way she convinces him that they are going to have a grand adventure, even as they’re in danger.

Then there’s Barton. I had to laugh at the parts where he and Lizzy have misunderstandings. He is a caring young man. I loved the way he would have done anything to protect Lizzy. What she didn’t understand was just what that meant for her life. These two had so many misunderstandings until the very end of the book. They could have saved a lot of problems if they’d just worked them out as they happened.

But then the plot wouldn’t have been as fun! It was really full of danger and adventure. I loved the whole thing!

Make sure to grab your own copy of this one!

ESCAPE TO EVERLY MANOR is one of those stories that keep readers turning pages in delight as it also pulls a range of emotions from them. Memorable characters, sweet romance, suspense, and siblings who will do anything for each other make this story one that readers will remember long after they've turned the last page.

How I adored these characters! Lizzy's desire to protect her brother at any cost was quite admirable. Here she is with no experience of working for herself, managing money, or being anything but a refined lady and she makes a plan to escape to fight for her and her brother's happiness. Her care for her brother pushes her on and keeps her hope alive. I also loved Thomas. He was such a wonderful boy with his own vulnerabilities and strengths. Just a dear. Then there's Barton... what a fine figure of a man he makes. I don't mean just in the physical sense, but in his work ethic, strength, and compassion for others. I loved seeing Lizzy and Barton dance around each other and both of their interactions with Thomas.

I pretty much loved every minute of the first half of this story. There was never a dull moment. You also could feel a constant underlying thread of suspense, that was handled really well. I loved the way the relationships developed and the constant tension in one form or another that kept things interesting. However, the second half felt was a different story. It felt overly dramatic and the romance didn't feel as genuine, as did the circumstances. Some things didn't make sense to me and I just couldn't reconcile them. However, the ending was very sweet after a harrowing ordeal.

I'd like to note how lovely this book is. The cover is perfect for the story, then there are these beautiful designs at the beginning of each chapter, and some embossing on the back (when turned towards the light, the design on the back reflects the light). This is something this publisher does with all it's historical romance books, but this particular book especially stood out to me. It makes it feel like its own treasure and something that deserves a place on coveted book shelves.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This story included a romance that is sweet but also with plenty of chemistry, a strong heroine but one who is also vulnerable, a dashing leading man with an honorable heart, and plenty of suspense, adventure, and a slue of other characters to entertain the reader. I did have some issues with the second half of the story, but I think most sweet historical romance readers will enjoy this one.

Content: Some violence, but clean.
Source: I received a complimentary copy from the publisher, which did not require a positive review nor affect it in any way.

I was originally drawn to this story because of the name. My youngest daughter is named Everly.

I loved this unique story!

How would a women of gentle birth in the 1800’s escape? What options are there? Now days our options are endless, but back then options were few and choices hard.

Escape to Everly Manor was a great story. I enjoyed the characters, writing, and the originality of this story.

Barton was all that is noble and gentlemanly. He was a true hero that would do anything possible for you. Lizzy was a bit stubborn and foolish but was selfless in all ways towards her brother Thomas.

I will be reading more from this author.
Thank you Net Galley for a copy for this book in return for my honest opinion.

Clean romance.

2 1/2 rounded up to 3.

This is a historical novel about Lizzy and how she flees from the bad circumstances at her uncle's to protect her younger brother Thomas. She soon realizes she doesn't have enough money to keep herself and her brother safe and after a hard storm, Barton helps them and takes them to his home. After learning their story, he looks to protect them and offer them a place to stay.

The plot itself is interesting enough but I found Lizzy either too naïve or too belligerent.

Unfortunately, I'm not a good fit for this author's writing style, but this is a personal preference.

I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley and his is my honest opinion.

I thought this book was interesting!!
It's also considered Recency Romance if you like that sort of thing. I didn't until I picked up a few and this one was no exception.
I love the fierce loyalty that Lizzie and Thomas had for each other. And dedication. Too often, most siblings want to quarrel because ine is so acraid that they're not going to get what the other one has. Or too afraid one parent will love one more than the other. I missed out on that. I'd love to have a sibling. Sometimes being an only child is lonely.
Trust is the theme here. It's so very hard to trust these days. Except that there is One whom we can trust. I trust Him with all my heart do you?
This is a great story for those who love recency romance. Not my cup of tea but I liked the cover so I wanted to see what the girl on the front cover was running from. Now I know but I'm not saying anything because I don't want to give anything away.
I think Mr. Everly is my favorite character. I love his kind and compassionate ways and wanting to help people if you will. I also like the way the author described him in this book. So I can imagine him being handsome.
Lizzie is determined. I think I'll use this word. It describes her perfectly. I like that she wants to protect.
Thomas is delightful!! Full of energy and an eagerness to want to help. And my!! So full of energy!! I wish I was that young again. I think Thomas gives this story character. I say this because of his youth. And his personality.
I thought it was ok but as I said Thomas is what made this story. Y'all will just have to read this book to find out why!!
I still strongly recommend this book. Especially for people who live Recency romance.

Ya'all this book is Ah-Mazing!!! I started reading it at 8:30pm and I didn't stop until I had finished the very last page. IT. IS. THAT. GOOD. Seriously, Linton just pulled me into Lizzy's world and she wouldn't let me go! I had to find out what would happen to her and Thomas. How were they going to eat, find shelter, or survive at all? And then enters Barton, cue the swooning now. This gentleman is not only handsome but he is so kind-hearted! I just wanted Lizzy to see how good he was and to trust him. Every time I felt like everything was solved and under control another twist and turn would come into play. I loved this story so much. It is all about loving someone more than yourself; being willing to sacrifice your own happiness for another. Read this book! Go forth and buy it now because this is one regency you will not soon forget!!! I received a copy of this book for free; all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Thank you to NetGalley and Covenant Communications for providing a digital copy!

Escape to Everly Manor quickly grabs your attention with the plight of Lizzy and her younger brother. They have been orphaned and their evil uncle is now their guardian. In an effort to save her brother from being sent to work on a merchant ship, the siblings run away. They soon seek shelter in an abandoned tenant house, which eventually leads to them meeting the owner of Everly Manor, who wishes to help them but can't get any honest answers from Lizzy. Her fear of word getting back to her uncle moves Lizzy to keep trying to run away, even when help is offered. Her tendency to keep running leads to all sorts of drama and complications.

The overall writing style of this novel is pretty good. There were a few awkward sentences, but not enough to lessen my enjoyment. However, the drama that made the book interesting to begin with started to strain my patience and credulity by the end. The length of the book felt a little artificially inflated by unnecessary misunderstandings and lack of communication. While this wasn't my favorite of stories, I would consider checking out other books by the author.

On a side note, the digital version I received needed some major formatting adjustments that will hopefully be addressed.

One of the best books I have read this year! Full of mystery, fun, hopelessness, and family this book brings so much to the table. I loved how elegantly written it is. This clean romance does not lack in suspense or steamy build up to a beautiful relationship. The characters are well written and do not lack in morals or upholding beliefs.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Ms. Linton's story is set in rural Regency England. A great afternoon 'escape' with likable characters. Her books get better and better.

A WONDERFUL BOOK!
Everything a regency romance should be!
Turmoil, twists, and tenderness.
And of course running from and towards love.
Absolutely adored this book!
