کتاب «عصا» روایتگر جنگ و حال و روز مردمان گرفتار در آن است. روزهای پایانی جنگ جهانی دوم است. توماس پسری دوازده ساله است که پدرش را در جنگ از دست داده است و زمانی که به همراه مادرش می‌خواهد برای دیدارش خاله‌اش، که در وین زندگی می‌کند، سوار قطار شود ناگهان گم می‌شود.توماس به‌تنهایی به وین می‌رود اما خانه خاله‌اش در اثر بمباران ویران شده است. توماسِ تنها و بی‌خانمان با مردی آشنا می‌شود که یک پایش را در جنگ از دست داده است؛ با عصا راه می‌رود و از توماس میخواهد که او را عصا بنامد......
داستان «عصا» را می‌توان هم‌چون بیانیه‌ای دانست در دفاع از انسان و انسانیت. نویسنده با به تصویر کشیدن روابط پاک انسانی نشان می‌دهد در شرایطی که انسان‌های بازمانده از جنگ برای بقای خویش به هر کاری دست می‌زنند و در زمانه‌ای که گمان می‌رود مرگ انسانیت فرا رسیده است، هستند انسان‌هایی که با وجود همۀ مشکلات کمک خود را از دیگران دریغ نمی‌کنند و پناهی امن می‌شوند برای دیگران.

Peter Härtling (1933 - 2017) was a German writer and poet. He was a member of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and he received the Großes Verdienstkreuz for his major contribution to German literature.

توماس پایین روی تشک عصا شروع به حرف زدن کرد: خوابی، توم؟ چه سؤال احمقانه‌ای خوب می‌دانم که بیداری و به سقفی که نمی‌توانی ببینی، خیره شده‌ای جشنها هم برای خودشان جریانی دارند. چون آدم می‌تواند در شبی که کریسمس نام گرفته چند سال پیرتر بشود. برای این که یک دفعه احساس می‌کند بین مردم تنهاست. چون دل آدم برای کسی که این جا نیست تنگ می‌شود؛ کسی که آدم دوستش دارد. مگه نه؟
عصا دستش را دراز کرد در حالی که دنبال لبه‌ی تشک می‌گشت لاله‌ی گوش توماس را گیر آورد و بعد شروع به نوازش کردن گونه‌اش کرد.

او گفت: غمگین بودن ضرری ندارد منتها می‌خواهم پیری زودرس را از روی دوشت بردارم. اگر به خودم بود فردا شب هم شبی مثل شب‌های دیگر بود؛ الکی خسته کننده یا الکی شاد. بستگی به تو دارد

One of the more memorable books from my high school period. As all books set during WW2, this is a bleak and sad tale. And yet it is more hopeful and bright through the unlikely friendship formed. It is but a short book, yet definitely one that leaves an impression and is a good introduction for younger readers to the subject of war and its aftermath.

Ein sehr berührendes Buch. Peter Härtling erzählt auf so einfühlsame weise die Geschichte vom jungen Thomas der im Nachkriegschaos seine Mutter verliert und dabei auf Krücke trifft.
Es entsteht eine ungewöhnliche Freundschaft in einer furchtbaren Zeit.
Das Buch hat mich wirklich sehr bewegt.

Una historia de solidaridad y desventura en los tristes años de la guerra en Alemania. Cuando la sociedad civil estaba desintegrada, descompuesta... La gente huyendo de las zonas de guerra, o siendo trasladada por la fuerza a campos de refugiados. Las aglomeraciones en las estaciones del tren, donde entre los tumultos muchas personas perdieron a sus familias, padres y madres a sus hijos, esposos y esposas, abuelos, tíos, hermanos, todos separados, niños abandonados entre la multitud. Un niño queda perdido de su madre en una de estas estaciones y al verse solo y desamparado, busca a alguien con quién acompañarse. Krücke será el ángel que le ayudará a reencontrarse con su madre. Esta obra describe detalladamente la tragedia de la gente que sufrió la guerra, la escacez, la hambruna, el frío. Pero también el espíritu solidario, la unión entre las personas para ayudarse mutuamente, para proteger a los más débiles, quitándose el poco alimento de la boca y darlo a sus semejantes. Triste pero bonita.

Had to read it for my German booklist for the KDS-Kleines Deutsches Sprachdiplom, which exam I did in Singapore in 1997. Nice book, very readable. My book had a different cover thought (with the same ISBN).

A heart-warming story of post-war Germany and Austria from the perspective of a 12 year old boy who is separated from his Mother and having to navigate being a refugee on his own.

Many idioms and colorful phrasing. I struggled, but got through.
