This book tells the story of Emmeline Pankhurst. She grew up in England and helped her parents to make ends meet. She discovered a love of reading at the age of three and dreamt of becoming a hero like the characters she read about. After high school, she began working for women's rights. Eventually, Emmeline's daughters joined her cause and they became the leaders of the suffragettes. After the war, Emmeline's dream finally came true. She was a hero to women everywhere.

I found this book very interesting. I have learned a lot about the suffrage movement in the USA but had never heard the story of women in England. As a woman, this history is so important to how I came to have the rights I do today.

I would love to read this to my students around the time of an election so that they can truly appreciate the freedoms they have now. I would want to also teach my students to learn more about the history of the world instead of just within the USA.

One of the students brought this book in to share with me.
I loved it. Emmeline Pankhurst is one of the suffragettes who women have to thank for getting us the right to vote. I appreciate that the book shows us how her early years with supportive, activist parents, led to her becoming who she eventually became. Root matter.
I also appreciated the timeline and additional information about her at the end of the book.

Emmeline Pankhurst is book in the Little People, Big Dreams series and is a children's picture book written by Isabel Sánchez Vegara and illustrated by Ana Sanfelippo. It is a cursory biography of Emmeline Pankhurst from her childhood in England with her love of books to becoming one of the leaders for women's suffrage.

Emmeline Pankhurst was a British political activist. She is best remembered for organizing the United Kingdom suffragette movement and helping women win the suffering right to vote. She was widely criticized for her militant tactics, agree about their effectiveness, but her work is recognized as a crucial element in achieving women's suffrage in the United Kingdom.

Vegara's text is rather simplistic, straightforward, and informative. It starts off with a young Emmeline Pankhurst in England, who loves to read and dream about being one of the heroes of her favorite books, which she would fulfill one day as she would be recognized as one of the leaders of the suffragette movement. Backmatter includes a concise and informative biography timeline of Emmeline Pankhurst's life. Sanfelippo's illustrations are drawn well, albeit a tad simplistic, but depicted the narrative rather well and apropos to the target audience.

The premise of the book is rather straightforward. It depicts Emmeline Pankhurst's childhood in the United Kingdom, growing up inspired by books about heroes who fought for others. She dedicated her life to fighting for women's voting rights and, with hard work and great bravery, led a remarkable movement that changed the world.

All in all, Emmeline Pankhurst is a wonderful biography of a little girl who dedicated her life to make life fairer to women, by convincing her country to give women the vote.

I am reviewing these short biographies as a series, rather than individually, unless one title requires additional information or comments. There are dozens of books in this series of well-done biiographies, all written by Vegera. The titles generally focus on one individual, many still living, but some are not. Many of the featured characters are famous but some aren’t as famous as they should be, considering the impact that those people had on fields like science, technology, research, healthcare, leadership, literature, arts and culture, sports, aviation, education, human rights, world peace, animal welfare / conservation, climate change and conservation of earth, air and water. Many of the featured characters got little recognition for their work in their lifetimes. All these stories have been pared down to what information is most essential and pertinent to the topic and person. These books are targeted at children and written in language and concepts suitable for them, but also for their parents, teachers and caregivers who may read these to, or discuss them with, the children. The books are beautifully illustrated, by many different artists, so although the books are similar in size, length, and concept, they are different in artistic style – to suit the featured character and theme. I would strongly recommend these books to parents who want to have discussions with their children about issues like human rights and future career options but mostly about ensuring the children know, and do, what is right, and good to make a positive impact on society.

Little People, BIG DREAMS is a best-selling biography series for kids that explores the lives of outstanding people, and this contribution, like the others, is written by Mª Isabel Sánchez Vegara, focused on British suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst, who fought for women's rights. I thought I would review this during the lead-up to the 2024 US Presidential election, the day after the first "debate," which was disappointing for all sorts of reasons. One guy was raging and lying, the other shaky, but a good man and a good President, so you know I am voting for good vs. totalitarianism and vengeful chaos. . . and f0r the guy who is most likely to help protect women's rights! Be the change that Pankhurst modeled for us!

The story is engaging, and important, and I like the similarly engaging/inviting illustration work of Ana Sanfelippo.

This is a re-read and it is not by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vergara, it is by Lisbeth Kaiser.
It is actually listed separately on this website under Kaiser's name, but you know why let facts get in the way of a good story.
Anyway brilliant book, about an amazing woman, perfect for the lead up to International Women's Day.
