“Soldahl! Next stop, Soldahl!”

When Norah Johanson hears the conductor’s words, her heart begins to race. At last she will be in the arms of the man she has promised to marry-Hans Larson. At fifteen, she was so sure of their love. Now, three years later and far from the mountains and fjords of her beloved homeland, Norway, she wonders…

She steps off the train, finds her trunks full of hand-embroidered linens, quilts, and household treasures painted with rosemaling designs, and looks for Hans. The pelting march snow stings her cheeks.

“Where is he? Dear God, what will I do?”

When Hans fails to arrive at the train station that night, Nora finds herself thrown into a life she never expected with people she doesn’t know-Reverend and Mrs. Moen and Carl Detchman, a grieving German immigrant. Is this really what God had planned for her?

Dear reader, can you imagine traveling across the ocean by ship and then across the United States by train to finally arrive in the western state of North Dakota to marry your sweetheart, only to discover that he died before you arrived? In this case, all is not lost. It appears that God hs another plan for this young lady, You have the opportunity to read this short story in order to experience the adventure laid before you.

Book Blurb: "Nora Johnson is looking forward to starting a new life in North Dakota, far from her native Norway. She is going to marry Hans and be a prosperous farmer's wife. Carl Detschman is happy with life on his tidy farm. Now he and his wife, Anna, eagerly await the birth of their second child. But Nora's and Carl's dreams are not to be. With God's help, a prodigious plan is realized, one that will alter their lives forever.

“Soldahl! Next stop, Soldahl!”

When Norah Johanson hears the conductor’s words, her heart begins to race. At last, she will be in the arms of the man she has promised to marry-Hans Larson. At fifteen, she was so sure of their love. Now, three years later and far from the mountains and fjords of her beloved homeland, Norway, she wonders. "

Unfortunately, there were a few discrepancies that niggle at your brain. But I overlooked those in favor of reveling in the inspiration and blessings that these folks received. This little gem has been ion my kindle for years and I just got around to reading it. But it was just when I needed to. So I am grateful.

When Hans fails to arrive at the train station that night, Nora finds herself thrown into a life she never expected with people she doesn’t know-Reverend and Mrs. Moen and Carl Detchman, a grieving German immigrant. Is this really what God had planned for her?

This woman had a heart of gold, an abundance of love, the faith of an angel, and the patience of a saint. God knew what he was doing when he brought into a town filled with such extraordinary people. Of course, the grieving widow started out stubborn, rude, and selfish before the ice around his heart finally started to melt. Let me just say, that took more than long enough! (wink, wink) There was no instant gratification in those days.

This story by Lauraine Snelling provides excellent entertainment. It is based on the expectation that failed to materialize. The resolution was not unexpected, but it took quite some time to run the gamut of changed circumstances before it blended together before they finally reached a happy conclusion, for which they were grateful to God for.

This is a short, clean, and wholesome read that I would recommend o any reader that enjoys the mail-order bride genre. Can you believe that there are still some readers out there that have never experienced even one of these nuggets of inspiration?

Plus, this series can be accessed through the Amazon Prime Kindle Unlimited program.

“Carl had spread hay in the back of the wagon and, with extra quilts, made a nest for his family.”
― Lauraine Snelling, Dakota Dawn

I have a rule when it comes to DNFING a book. I do not rate if I have not read at least 50 pages or so.

This is obviously a good book. The writing is great. I can see that. However it is not for me. The story involves two people, both dealing with extreme loss. One is a young Norwegian girl come to North Dakota to meet her fiancee only he is not there to greet her..

The other is a man whose wife dies in childbirth.

I have no doubt this is a great book. For me, the high volume of tragedy happening before even fifty pages were finished was to much for me. Also I had not realized this was part of a series.

I am sure it is great but it is not for me.

Nora Johanson travels from Norway to the Dakota Plains to marry Hans. Those plans turn painful.

This book had several things I loved. One, children. Two, the Dakotas and Three, Love.

The plot is simple but the characters are deep and the need even deeper. Even when things go bad, God has a plan. Even when things get worse, God has a plan. Even when things look impossible... You got it. God has a plan. I love how this story weaves God's desires into His people's lives.

I look forward to the next book in this series.

After Carl loses his wife from giving birth to their second child he is a distraught and angry man. He wants nothing to do with his newborn son, but seeks out someone to care for his children. Nora and Carl agree to a marriage of convenience, so that she can care for them without ruining her reputation and earn her way back home.

This was a sweet story. I loved watching Nora help Carl get through his grief and them cone to care for each other. The ending was abrupt, but wrapped everything up well.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This was a nice escape from the mysteries I usually read.

Nora Johanson has had quite a journey, Norway to Soldahl, North Dakota. She is excited to start her new life in America with Hans Larson. She had pledged to marry him just before he left Norway 3 years ago when she was just 15. After a trip by ship and train, she arrives in Soldahl to find Hans had died just a few days earlier. Worried about where she will live or how she will get back home, Nora turns to God to light her path. The Reverend and Mrs. Moen take Nora into their home and an opportunity presents itself, but is it really what God wants her to do?

I have read other books by this author several years ago and knew I would enjoy this story before I even started reading. She is very talented at bringing this time in North Dakota to life. Her words created full-color images in mind. We get to know Nora and the Moen’s pretty well. It was heartbreaking to read about Carl Detschman’s grief, the death of a loved one can overtake anyone whether it be in 1910 or 2018. Lauraine Snelling captures his life and all he meets perfectly.

I am excited this is part of a series. I look forward to reading the next 3 books.

A pretty short book (185 pages) about a Norweigan girl who travels to the US hoping to marry her old boyfriend. Turns out he died the week before. She then marries a man whose wife just died in childbirth. She can't talk English, but marries him to take care of his young daughter and baby. Do they fall in love in the end? Read the book to find out. I only read it because it was set in North Dakota and I needed to read it to complete a state challenge.

“Dakota Dawn” by Lauraine Snelling – Book Review

(Part of a series: “Dakota Dawn”, “Dakota Dream”, “Dakota Dusk”, and “Dakota Destiny”.)

3.5 stars

This volume is effective enough in its depiction to carry the reader along, allowing one to get lost in it. The premise is excellent, compelling and engaging.

A young woman, Nora Johanson, emigrates to America in order to marry her childhood friend, Hans Larson, whom she grew up with in Norway, he having emigrated before her. He tells her lies about what he has when he writes to her and compels her to join him.

When she lands in America, she finds that he is not waiting for her at the train station. She has no money for a hotel, so the stationmaster takes her through a snowstorm on foot to the pastor’s home. There, she is welcomed and finds shelter and kindness.

A man, Carl Detschman, and his wife are having a baby. The birth is difficult, leaving Carl, his young daughter and newborn son in a difficult situation.

The story unfolds creatively, one of the facets being that Nora speaks very little English and must find her way in a strange land.

Through much difficulty, there is a realistic conclusion that leaves the reader satisfied.

A well-written novel.

As I was reading this book I was puzzled by a few things that didn't seem to be quite Ms snelling's style as I have observed it to be in the books of hers I have read. But it turns out, according to the endnote, that this was Lauraine snelling's first historical novel and, if I recall right, her second book published! So it is really interesting to see certain elements that are developed more in later books.
For example, this book follows the usual format of a romance in that it ends with the happy conclusion of the romance. Whereas in later books, Ms Snelling makes the romance less of the main plot and more just a natural, yet incidental part of the story, as it is in real life.
And while I like that much more, this book was not bad because of that focus shift, and in fact I'm still thinking about it now, wishing for more story.
I would definitely recommend this book, the romance is sweet and real. And Nora's love for the children is beautiful to watch grow.
Something that threw me a bit too is that the names of some of the characters in this book are reused in the red River series, it had me wondering for a while if this was another part of that series, but I'm pretty sure that it's just that the names must have been favourites that got carried over!

In Dakota Dawn, Norah Johanson’s fiance had gone to America three years ago, promising to send for her. Now she’s on her way. But when she arrives, she finds that Hans has just recently died. Reverend and Mrs. Moen take her in for as long as she needs to decide what to do. She doesn’t have the money to go back home, so she must find work.

Carl Detchman is a quiet but stubborn German immigrant whose wife has just died in childbirth. The Moens have taken care of his young daughter and infant son, but he can’t expect them to do so forever. The Moen’s house guest who has been helping with the children seems capable. But he can’t invite a beauitful young single woman to his home without tongues wagging. So he proposes a marriage of convenience. If she’ll come and keep house and take care of the children until he can make other arrangements, then they can annul the marriage and he’ll pay for her ticket back home.

Norah is shocked at first, but agrees. And, of course, the two fall in love. This is a frequently seen story line with an inevitable conclusion, but it was enjoyable to see the two work through their issues and come first to appreciate, and then to love each other.

A widower romance + marriage of convenience + faith? Absolutely I loved this! The first two chapters had me on the edge of my seat! I had the hardest time putting this book down! I fell in love with Nora and Carl very fast and was rooting for them the whole time. I'll admit the ending felt a bit fast for my liking but it was still satisfying and I just really loved the story as a whole. It tugged at my heart strings, made me chuckle, made me swoon. It was great!
It also had a lot of Norwegian type stuff in it which was super cool! I love learning about other languages and cultures! Back in 2019 I dabbled a BIT in Norwegian on Duolingo (hardly anything tbh) and after reading a few chapters of this, I decided to jump back into it! I didn't get too far in Duo's course but I had the funnest time doing some Duolingo lessons before reading chapters of this!

Lastly, I read this as my North Dakota book for the 50 books in 50 states challenge I'm doing this summer inspired by Ryan Trahan's St Jude fundraiser on Youtube!

Dakota Dawn is the first book in the Dakota Plains series. It’s one of Lauraine Snelling’s earlier works. For me it was kinda a mixture of An Untamed Land the first book in her Red River of the North series and Love Comes Softly by Janette Oke. For a book that’s not even 200 pages a lot sure did seem to happen. Between life, death, and love there definitely wasn’t a dull moment. I loved that one of the characters shared the same names as Ingeborg who is one of the main characters from her Red River of the North series. Makes me wonder if that was a coincidence?

Dakota Dawn was a fantastic read and I look forward to continuing on with this series. Definitely a must read for Snelling fans.

This was like a miniature version of the Red River series. Nora arrives in N Dakota to marry her Norwegian boyfriend, only to find out he has died of a fever a few days before. She has no money, and no one has need to hire her. She is worried about how she will live.
Carl's wife has died in childbirth. He is angry and bitter at God, and has not only a newborn that he doesn't want, but a three-year-old daughter who doesn't understand where her mother has gone and why her daddy is so changed. Carl offers Nora a marriage in name only in order to get someone to care for his children and help around the house and farm. It's a very difficult time for both of them, but God's love provides strength and comfort and softens hearts.

Another great beginning!

I have read many books by Snelling and none have left me disappointed.
What starts out as a happy journey to America, and to North Dakota, shatters. Poor Nora. Her future was stolen from her before she even arrived. Penniless, what is to come of a young Norwegian speaking woman stranded in the frozen stormy land so far from home?
Depending on the kindness of strangers is not an easy thing for her to accept. How will she ever leave this mess in the past and return to her family in Norway?
It is said that God never closes a door without first opening a window. As she prays for guidance, is she ready for the path He will open?

Dakota Dawn by Lauraine Snelling was a book loaned to me my a granddaughter. It is the first in a series of Dakota. She writes a lot of books about the Norwegians in North Dakota but this is not a continuation of those series. Nora comes to North Dakota engaged to a childhood sweetheart and upon her arrival in the winter found out he had died of a fever a week before her arrival. At the same time a young German emigrant died in childbirth leaving a daughter and newborn son. The needs of these two families is brought together in this book. Ms Snelling is always a refreshing read as she is a Christian author and has clean stories. I'd be interested in reading more of this series.

Dakota Dawn

Great book on love and laughter as well as death. The story of a young woman who leaves her home and family in Bergen Norway to meat her groom only to find when she reaches her destination that he has died from the influenza outbreak. She then sets out to look after a German man who just lost his wife in childbirth and now has a new son to look after. The rest you will have to find out on your own by reading the book. This was a free read and a great one by Laurainne Snelling . This is my review and mine alone. Norma Gorrill

I really liked the slight twist Ms. Snelling gave to this mail order bride story. Nora Johanson had known her intended back in their home country of Norway and felt they were in love. He left to go to America when she was only 15. three years later he sends for her to join him and she is not so sure.. The story starts when the train she is riding on stops in her new land of Soldnahl, North Dakota. When her intended does not show up that night she is taken to the pastors home. Life is not as she expected and she cant help but ask God, What Now?

Both Dakota Dawn and Dakota Dream were too short. I couldn't put them down and I read a book a day. Your Red River series...those books were bigger and i read all 20-21 about that family.

I liked the descriptions. I liked the letters from Norway. Living in North Dakota and a child of the 1930's and hearing the stories from my Grandfather who came from Bo Telemark, I identified with the weather, the seasons and all

Short read but interesting. I love the time period it is set in. Horse and buggy and farmers. Norah is thrown into a life with Carl and it looks pretty awful. She tries so hard to communicate with him, but he is grieving the loss of his wife. With a new baby and a little girl, Norah has her hands full. Interesting life she has and the tragedy she encounters leads her to find love in the least likely place when she first shows up at Soldshahl.

Terrific trip back in time

What a great story! It has vivid descriptions. The emotional coaster stayed true to each character. It was very important to show these emotional swings. I loved how naturally the children were involved in how the story. It was a quick read. Perfect for a stormy day. I highly recommend this book.

I received this book as a Kindle Matchbook because I purchased the paperback version for my father's birthday. We both finished this book quickly because it was hard to leave at the end of a chapter.
I recommend it to all readers who enjoy the books about Snelling's immigrants to the Dakotas and Minnesota.

Living in Minnesota and learning this book was set in North Dakota perked my interest in this book. I like reading about the immigrants that started to settle here and the trials that they must go through and like how she brings in the Christian principles that the settlers brought with him. Her characters seem so real to life and this book was easy to read.

I really enjoyed this book. I thought the author did a great job of describing the place. We didn't get much in the way of words or thoughts of the husband which helped us to understand what Nora was experiencing. My only complaint was that the story ended too quickly!
