Deep beneath the Irish Sea lies a kingdom beyond mortal men's imagining... Until one day a fisherman finds a beautiful maiden washed ashore. She cannot speak to him in any voice, though her yearning shines from her eyes. But with forces of land and sea arrayed between them, will they ever find their happy ending?
Growing up, Anthea Sharp spent her summers raiding the library shelves and reading, especially fantasy. She now makes her home in the Pacific Northwest, where she writes, plays the fiddle, hangs out in virtual worlds, and spends time with her small-but-good family. A short story which is a re-telling of The Little Mermaid fairy tale but in the original way of writing which is Anthea Sharp's way, enchanting but very sad. Full of love and hope and a girl who would not just settle for a life beneath the waves. She had dreamt of her coming of age day when she would be allowed to venture to the surface to get her first view of the mortal world all her life. She vowed she would do her utmost to catch a glimpse of a human and she did, from their on she was never the same. She had fallen in love with breathing air rather than water and with Eiric, the fisherman she had set her eyes upon. Sad but with a great twist in the end!
‘No good comes from anything mortal’ Sad, but true. Not just on land, but also in the air and sea.
I couldn’t imagine a life in hiding. Especially not in my own realm. ‘The safety of our people rests in concealment and caution.’
I have many other books and short stories by this author: ‘Passage Out (Victoria Eternal)’, ‘Faerie Song (Feyland #1)’, ‘Faerie Girl (Sharp Tales #3)’, The Faerie Girl and Other Tales’, ‘Faerie Song: Ten Magical Tales’ as well as ‘Heart of the Forest’ and ‘White as Frost’ (Darkwood Trilogy #'s 0.5 & 1)’.
But, is one is really lucky, and maybe with a little help from fate, it could be possible for the rare individual to evade the fickle hand. Or tease a better than average outcome from it.
A short story - which is available as a stand-alone purchase. It is also available in Once Upon a Kiss: 17 Romantic Faerie Tales (where I first read the story).
A retelling of the Little Mermaid that keeps well to the original tragic love story, yet Sharp adjusts it just enough to make it her own.
My one complaint about this version is it felt too short. Sharp does a great job of creating the world and the feelings of the people within said world.
The Sea King's Daughter, by Anthea Sharp, is a sweet, fanciful short story. It is a Little Mermaid fairytale retelling that will definitely tug at your heartstrings. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes a cute, short take on a tale that's stood the test of time.
This is a short novella retelling The Little Mermaid. It hits all the right notes from the original while still proving an originality that makes this retelling well worth the bittersweet ending.
