Rachel Ama takes inspiration from naturally vegan dishes and cuisines as well as her Caribbean and West African roots to create great full-flavour recipes that are easy to make and will inspire you to make vegan food part of your daily life.
Rachel's recipes are quick and often one-pot; ingredients lists are short and supermarket-friendly; dishes can be prepped-ahead and she has included a song with each recipe so that you have a playlist to go alongside every plate of delicious food. Cinnamon French toast with strawberries Chickpea sweet potato falafel Peanut rice and veg stir-fry Caribbean fritters Plantain burger Tabbouleh salad Carrot cake waffles with cashew frosting
So if you share the author's attitude that vegan food should fit into your life with ease and pleasure - whether you are a fully fledged vegan looking for new ideas, want to reduce your meat intake, make more environmentally friendly food choices, or just keen to eat more veg - this cookbook is for you.
Since launching her YouTube channel in September 2017 Rachel Ama has amassed a legion of followers who are all hungry for her simple, affordable and delicious vegan recipes and recommendations (and for her dance moves).
Rachel Ama knows the London vegan scene inside-out but she also looks abroad for flavour inspiration, and to both her Caribbean and African roots. Rachel grew up in North London with her Mum, who encouraged lots of veggies (there was no "treat drawer" in their house) and was really into holistic living and studied nutrition. Rachel very much brought vegan cooking home and would take staple Caribbean recipes (inspiration from her Sierra Leonean and St Lucian roots) and make vegan alternatives still packed with traditional spices and flavours. Rachel also has a grandma from Wales so was inspired to make some British classics vegan.
A self-confessed KFC addict as a teenager, she decided to go vegan three years ago and hasn't looked back. As her passion for plants grew and grew, so did her interest in cooking - and her belief that vegan food need not compromise on taste or nutrition. Rachel travelled around South America after University and was inspired by how each country offered a completely different palette of flavours, confirming her love for food and cooking.
Rachel loves to exercise and dispels the belief that veganism gives you no energy - she loves boxing and trying out new exercises like Muay Thai. She lives in North London with her Cockapoo, Marlee.
My young daughter, who is vegan, mentioned Rachel Ama in a conversation, so I decided to purchase the book. The book covers a variety of recipes and includes valuable sections on egg replacements and plant-based milks. Having already tried a couple of the recipes, I look forward to trying others and would recommend "Vegan Eats".
i’ve followed rachel on youtube for years and loved her recipes. this book is right up my alley as i want to eat more plant based and not sacrifice flavours. her adaptations of caribbean recipes are tasty & filling.
as she is from the uk, the names of some ingredients may be different in other places in the world. she also uses the metric system for measurements.
Ever since moving from my home in South Africa, I have been craving flavour and colour in my food. I never realised it when I was younger, but South Africa really is a rainbow nation. From morogo to chakalaka, from curries to potjies, I was craving a book that could cure my need for variety. And this book did just that. She has lovely Jamaican-inspired recipes, some classic such as lasagne, and some exciting recipes which have become staples in my household, like the African Peanut Stew. The flavours take me back home. Wonderful!
I'm so glad I bought this book! I am a new vegan; when it arrived I went through the whole thing with post-it notes to mark the ones I'd like to try - I may as well have marked the ones I don't want to try, which were only a few! Having tried out several recipes, I can advise all new vegans to PLEASE pick up this book. Vegans are often met with comments like "oh so you're just eating rabbit food now?" or "wow I could never eat bland food" but vegan food does not have to be bland! In fact, I've never eaten so good since making the change from vegetarian to vegan! The flavours are cracking, the food is nutritious and I have tons more energy than I did before. Rachel has done something magical with this book and with the way she cooks her food. I find the recipes flavoursome and very comforting/homey, and this has helped my transition into a vegan diet massively.
My husband gave me this beautiful cookbook for Christmas and I am already in love. The recipes are straightforward and easy to follow, and the photos are very nice. I love the mix of recipes, with different cultural influences, and I love that there are recipes for many homemade pantry basics in the back (such as plant milks, different sauces, etc.). Some recipes are paired with some recommended music - a nice addition. For Americans who are used to the US system of weights and measurements, it would probably be really helpful to have a good food scale and some metric measuring cups, as the recipes are all in the metric system. I am excited to spend 2021 trying these recipes!
Maybe I've just had bad luck with vegan cookbooks lately but every one seems to rely either on 1. an overabundance of soy/processed replacements, or 2. you finding the highest quality, most perfect produce ever because you're not getting any seasoning besides olive oil and lemon juice. Rachel is somewhere in between - some recipes do call for tofu or substitutes, but not often (and they're usually optional anyway), and a huge priority is placed on FLAVOR (especially Caribbean spices). Was already a fan via YouTube, probably going to buy a copy after I return this to the library.
I found Rachel firstly on You Tube. I'd just become a vegan was looking for some interesting whole food recipes. There are very few British ones out there. After watching her food preparation and cooking I decided that I wanted her book.
I wasn't disappointed. She makes easy, difficult meals, from the simple breakfast through to a vegan feast.
Broad set of tasty recipes; so far I have made the loaded breakfast burritos, the nut butter toasts, and the avocado toasts. Watch the British measurements and terms; I also wish she had cooked more from fresh than "tins" (to use her British term!). Also she loves aubergines (eggplant) and I do not, so a lot of those recipes didn't speak to me.
In deze recensie gaan we op een culinaire reis door de pagina’s van “Rachel Ama’s Vegan Eats,” een boek dat belooft onze smaakpapillen te verrassen met heerlijke recepten en een vernieuwende benadering van veganistisch koken.
I absolutely adore Rachel Ama! This is one of those cookbooks that I’ve come back to again and again over the years of having it and really made my transition into being vegan much easier! It’s full of recipes I love to cook for any vegan skeptics to show them that being vegan doesn’t mean compromising on flavours
This will definitely be a buy for my cookbook shelf. Amazing recipes. Super nice photography. Also great ethnic food recipes as well. Easy to follow recipes that do not seem complicated to make. I love to cook so it would not be a problem if they were. If you like a variety of types of foods and also like to eat ethnic foods, this would be great for you.
I keep returning to this one because veganising Caribbean food is one of my favourite things.
Thought you’d never have Jamaican Johnny cakes or a more-than-passable replacement for salt-fish and ackee as a vegan? WRONG! AND they are damn good! <3 😌
