This came out of my head and turned into a book. So that's been pretty wild.

BEYOND THE RUBY VEIL is the story of a tiny, insufferable lesbian named Emanuela, and her tenderhearted best friend, Alessandro. Who is also her betrothed. And who is also gay. It’s a marriage of convenience. Emanuela and her platonic fiancé live in a city where water doesn't fall from the sky, but is created—from the blood of its citizens. This transformation is the work of a powerful magic user. When that magic user is

I have had strong feelings about this story since I first read it last year! I've read another version since then (loved it even more) and I cannot wait to have the final, finished copy on my shelf!

It's dark, hilarious, and compelling, and any time it's mentioned I end up raving about how it's one of the most interesting and unique stories I've ever read. These characters and this world and the humor in the midst of terrible darkness are as healing as they are entertaining. Everything in this

This is one of the most raw and compelling fantasy books I’ve ever read. These characters don’t hold back and it’s messy, ridiculous, terrifying, and empowering all at once. It captures frustration and anger in such a powerful way while still having these light, hilarious moments. It’s one hell of a book. I adore it and can’t wait for you to read it too!

I am so thankful I got to read an early copy of this, because HOLY CROWS.

The. Voice.

It's fantastic, and it fills every word on the page. Emanuela is a delightfully dark, interesting character, and you feel her presence in every line. She's so wonderfully clever and confident, and I loved every moment of her story.

Mara paints a vivid, dangerous, and highly mysterious world, whose unanswered questions pull you through page after page. Her writing is utterly gorgeous, and the relationships that

Mara Fitzgerald writes YA fantasy about unlikable female characters who ruin everything. She is a biologist by day and spends entirely too much time looking at insects under a microscope. She was born near Disney World and now lives near Graceland, which is almost as good. Her debut YA fantasy, BEYOND THE RUBY VEIL, will release in 2020 from Disney Hyperion.
