One day, eighteen-year-old Thorne could become the Emperor of the Omniverse, the single being who rules countless worlds. Trouble is, Thorne's father, Cole, is both the current Emperor and a sadistic freak. In fact, Cole won't even keep his promises to the very humans who got him his throne.

Well, Thorne won't stand for it.

Our hero takes a break from saving the Omniverse in order to visit the human world. His goal? Making good on Cole's promises. What Thorne expects is a routine mission. What he discovers is his one true love, what his people call their transcendent. Finding Meimi Archer is more than Thorne ever imagined possible. Now, he's willing to do anything to keep his transcendent safe, no matter what that may cost himself and his home world of Umbra.

Oh god I can’t wait for Alien Minds after reading about Thorne and his fight to do the right thing for the Universe and to help others. Once he meets Meimi everything changes, and looking after her and finding out everything about her is paramount.
This is the second Prequel and is from Thorne’s point of view, so to get a balance view before we all enjoy Alien Minds coming next month its best to read Scythe which is from Meimi’s point of view and is on KindleUnlimited at the moment.
Now I have another series of Christina Bauer to follow, sometimes I would like just a peak inside her imagination and see how she does it time after time. Except I think it might give me a fright.
Another winner to enjoy.

OMG, this was so good!! And it's only a prequel 😲. After reading Schythe and now Umbra, I can't wait to dive into Alien Minds. :)

The world described is very rich, imaginative and one of a kind. I a world of multiverses, Thorne is one of three sons of the Emperor, who rules them all. The Emperor is a real jerk and when people who helped him get a throne are in trouble, Thorne decides to help. He fins Meimi and falls for her. Their connection runs deeper than just regular mortal love. And hee is about to lose her, just as he found her.

I loved reading a book from his side, the world where he lives, Umbra and about his family. It's so good. :)

Now that I'm all hyped up for Alien Minds, I look forward to how the story will go.

Umbra is the second prequel novella set in Umbra, a dystopian dimension where infinite dimensions of Earth and other planets are a reality, but usually unbeknownst to the population with a few exceptions. It is basically the first novella, but from Thorne's point of view and the events leading up to him finding his transcendent (soulmate), Meimi. Prince Thorne is the third son to the mentally unstable Emperor of the Omniverse, and in a constant fight to prove himself as he is seen as the least least likely to ascend to the throne of Umbra and with the least power over the "sentient" which are scientific particles that bend to the will of the recipient for protection, knowledge and drift science. Not taking the throne suits him fine as it's not his goal anyway. When the human who helped put his father on the throne begs for help, the Emperor refuses to act and repay the debt he owes. Disgusted with his father's lack of honour, Thorne goes against orders to do nothing and sneaks off to the dimension of Earth where she resides. One look at the daughter of the woman he's there to help, Meimi, and he knows he's found his soulmate, his "transcendent." Nothing else in the world matters anymore, just her and he'll do anything to protect her. Which includes taking the wrath of his father, brothers, and mother necessary. At the end of book 1 Meimi was being drugged and taken away by her government to be forced into slavery as a drift scientist. Thorne stayed behind to protect her mother as she asked him to, but he's going after her no matter the circumstances, including the added problem of Meimi possibly not remembering him as they were going to wipe her memories. Join Thorne as he fights for his soulmate and does anything to protect her from the evil clutches of her oppressive government and bring her into the safety of his arms. You won't want to miss this second prequel before you start the full series with Alien Minds.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is an easy read story, which is fun to get lost in and enjoy every action-filled moment.

Thorne is the third son to the Emperor of the Omniverse, and in a constant fight to prove himself. Unfortunately, his father is no longer the man he once was and has become a jerk. When the human who helped put Cole on the throne begs for help, the Emperor refuses her. So Thorne goes against orders and sneaks off to the reality of Earth where she resides. There, he not only learns what she wants him to do but meets one of her daughters. And the impossible happens.

I'm not always a fan of prequels, but in this case, they do a terrific job at setting up the background and atmosphere for the first novel in the series...one I can't wait to get my hands on. The read is fairly short, which is too bad. Once the story gets going, it's impossible to put down and left me wanting to know more and immediately grab up the official first novel in the series. Thorne gains immediate sympathy but isn't really the outcast either, which is refreshing. He might have to battle harder than his brothers for any recognition, but he holds his own when he has to. He's not arrogant, nor does he expect the throne. Plus, there's a wonderful sense of brotherly support which is especially great to see considering his father's sour personality.

The writing is fairly simple and keeps this at an easy to read level, but that works wonderfully with this tale. It's the type of book to dive into and expect a fun adventure with interesting characters, while not getting bogged down on the literary end. And still, the author manages to add the right amount of character depth and world building to draw in and feel connected to every scene. Fans of science fiction, inter-dimensional battles, and power plays for thrones and intrigue are sure to enjoy this one.

I received a complimentary copy and enjoyed the story very much. I'm giving it 4.5 and rounding up.

**Review can be found at https://smadasbooksmack.blogspot.com/ **

Thorne is the "extra" prince, the unwanted one who has almost no power (aka Sentient, the alien technology that enhances special talents) but spends his time trying to save other worlds and dimensions from destruction. When a debt is called in and his father the king refuses to pay his due, Thorne decides to honor that debt in his place. But Thorne had no idea what he was going to find on this mission, and that it would alter his life forever.

It's not about what you have, it's about who you are.

I do not usually read short stories, actually I usually avoid them like the plague. But after reading all of Christina's previous books, I picked up Scythe which made me hungry for more and so of course I had to read Umbra. I highly recommend that you read this series in order, including the prequel stories to help fill in the world and the characters.

Alright, let's just be honest here- Umbra gets five stars because I love Thorne. He is worth five stars regardless of the plot. But that being said, this was such a cool short story! I read Scythe back in November and I had so many questions I wanted answered due to the shocking ending and crazy surprises. Well, I jumped into Umbra without having read the synopsis, just knowing that I wanted more from this messed up version of earth. Color me surprised when I discovered Umbra was told from the mysterious alien Thorne's point of view and how he ended up meeting Meimi in the first place. And then some extra too (not gonna lie, I have been concerned for Meimi's well-being these last few months)!!

You cannot imagine how psyched I am for Alien Minds! I can't wait to continue the journey and unravel more of the mystery and the worlds. This is the perfect series for anyone who likes science fiction, action, danger and true love.

Thank you NetGalley for the free copy of Umbra, in exchange for an honest review.

Please only read on if you have read Book 1.

This is Thorne’s story in the Dimension Drift series. Thorne is a prince on the planet Umber, but he is seen as the weakest prince.

“My brothers and I make up the royal family of Umbra. We’re expected to wield exceptional powers with sentient. Slate and Justice do; I don’t. That makes me the chipped jewel in an otherwise-perfect crown.”

He is a protector of the Omniverse. Umbrian people have a strong connection with one person, called their Transcendent. But many do not find theirs.

“This is someone who’s so important and beloved to you across so many parallel universes, the emotion between you bleeds into this reality. An Umbran transcendent will boost your powers, but even having a human one is a great gift. It’s someone to share your thoughts, dreams and future.”

Meimi is Thorne’s transcendent, and he never imagined finding her.

In Book 1, Scythe, I was left with a lot of questions. Book 2, Umber, has answered a lot of the questions I had from reading Scythe. These books need to be read with the knowledge that there are more books coming, everything will not make sense by the end of the book, especially the prologue books! The story is still building. Right now we have just a glimpse into the bigger story.

The author has a very different style of writing, she has a way of revealing some things while not fully painting the picture. She describes the people and their actions, but their surroundings are a little hazy. Some surroundings are described, but much is left to the readers imagination. I believe that to be the intention of the author.

Reading from Meimi’s perspective and now Thorne’s, I feel a fuller picture taking shape in my mind. Like we needed both of them to make the book whole in our minds. It’s beautiful how the author is slowly fitting the puzzle pieces together.

The timescale of this book overlaps with that of Scythe and much that happens there happens here so if you're not a big fan of novellas then you can wait to read Alien Minds book one of this series. However, having said this I would 100% read this if you enjoyed the first as it gives you so much more insight on the circumstances from Thorne's perspective and a better understanding because as a being of Umbra he has more knowledge on the world that Meimi was lacking in Scythe.

Personally, I preferred this over Scythe as I enjoy reading from the male POV more than the females and this book was no exception. I felt like there was more emotion in this book and it was interesting to read more about Thorne, his family and his life. In Scythe, Thorne is seen as a protector whereas in this book he has vulnerable encounters with his father which are really intriguing to read about.

Furthermore, as Thorne is from Umbra he understands the term transcendent and the importance and value behind it therefore, his perspective on finding his transcendent and the meaning behind it was incredible to read about. I felt like this book really allowed us to dive into Thorne as a character discovering his beliefs, worries and morals. I can't wait to uncover more about him and his brothers and really hope that future books are written from his POV also.

I recommend this book if:
1. You enjoyed Scythe
2. You enjoy reading male POV
3. You're looking for a fun, quick and easy sci fi read with the potential to become an amazing book series.
4. You've previously enjoyed Christina Bauer's other books.

I read the first Prequel to the Dimension Drift series, Scythe before I read this one and I loved it. As soon as I finished it, I immediately started reading Umbra.

Agh, I am just such a huge Christina Bauer fan now. I honestly had not heard of her before starting her Angelbound series, and holy crap after that one? I mean..I thought it couldn't get any cooler.

Yet, here I am. Writing a review for another series by her that just wow'd me. The way the world building and character structures all fit together in these perfectly constructed pieces is so very impressive!

This is just the second series I've read by this author (Angelbound series being the first) and I'm not exaggerated at all when I say it is always something new and refreshing to read.

This world is something I've never read before and that alone intrigues me but then adding in the spunk of our female lead character and the creative and out-of-this-world science that teases your mind and makes you realize..or even say to yourself.."Hey..you never know.." ..?

Yeah..I'm hooked - 100% hooked! I'll be on pins and needles until Alien Minds (the official book #1 in the Dimension Drift series) releases. I'm talking multiple alerts on my phone and computer calendar. I need to know the second it's available. Because I NEED this story.

I need it.

For real. NEED.

Thorne may be in the line of succession for Emperor of the Omniverse, but he knows one thing … he does not want to be a ruler like his father. Cole is an Emperor who doesn’t keep his promises to those who put him on the throne and Thorne knows that is not right. When Thorne decides to take a break from saving the Omniverse by going to the human world, he discovers his transcendent … his one true love. Thorne never thought he would find his transcendent and he is highly motivated to do what he can to keep Meimi safe. What might this safety cost Thorne? Will his actions have consequences on his home world of Umbra?

Umbra is the second prequel novel in the Dimension Drift series. I was expecting this book to pick up where the last prequel stopped, so I was a little confused at first. Once I realized I was in a different world with a different main character … things fell into place quickly. There is a lot of action packed into this short book and readers will eagerly work their way through it to find out what happens next. Bauer now has a strong male character to go along with Meimi from the first book. I can’t wait to see where this goes in Alien Minds (which is already out).

Okay. OKAY.

Drift science, the omniverse, hot aliens with magic science powers who save worlds? Yeah sign me up.

In Umbra we meet Thorne Oxblood who just so happens to be a prince. But not like a great prince because he’s got limited ‘sentient’. What’s sentient? Well it’s little science partials that make drift science work.

Basically Thorne is the black sheep of the royal family who goes out on missions to save alternate earth dimensions from imploding. It’s actually a pretty swanky concept. The engineer in me likey.

Thorne’s father, you know, emperor of the omniverse has something called the Crown Sentient. He gained control of it through some rather duplicitous means which left the lives of a few drift scientists from an alternate earth a like screwy. As such when a request from Rose, one of the DS’s, Thorne can’t in good conscience not help.

This book is an excellent introduction to the series and I CAN NOT wait for Alien Minds!! I need more Thorne and Meimi ASAP.

OH I would like to request a book on Slate too. Someone who talks so little is bound to have the most interesting inner monologue 😍🖤

I adore Christina Bauer's work. I stumbled into another series of hers, quite by accident, and now I can't get enough. This one I picked up out of order (it's a bad habit of mine) but it didn't matter one bit. I was sucked into the story and character of Thorne immediately and it was thoroughly enjoyable and without need for the other book as context.

One of my very favorite things about this story is that while it is obviously sci-fi, it feels very much like a video game to me. That may be weird, but it definitely enhanced my enjoyment!

Thorne is just trying to complete a mission on Earth as a keeper of the Omniverse when things go completely other than planned. Love? That's not at all what he's there for, but there's no avoiding it when it happens.

Just a super fun ride, all the way through with great dialogue, fantastic adventure and a feel-good, nostalgic type tone. Highly recommend!

Wow! Umbra shows a completely different side of the conundrum ahead in the “Dimension Drift” series written by Christina Bauer.

Bauer utilizes Umbra to show us Thorne’s version of the same events which happen in book one, Scythe. In some ways, it reads like a completely different book because we are reading about Thorne’s world which is an alien world. We view all of his problems and how they will impact his time on Earth and his relationship with Meimi.

This book does not have the emotional connection for me as Scythe did, but it does have a lot more action and details. It is a quick read and gives us an update as to where everyone is and what has happened to Meimi since we left her last.

Ouch! That is all I am saying regarding that.

See you on the drift!

I received an ARC of this book and I am writing a review without prejudice and voluntarily.

Eighteen-year-old Thorne travels to other dimensions/realms to save their worlds and the people who live there. Thorne is assigned a task to travel to an alternate Earth to help a human woman find her daughter. What Throne doesn’t count on is falling in love.

In the blink of an eye the love of his life is taken from him and whisked away by a man who is interested in Meimi because of the things she can do. Throne has a short time frame in which to find Meimi before she disappears. Throne must come up with a plan to save his transcendent before it is too late.

In Scythe the first prequel of the Dimension Drift series we get the story from Throne’s transcendent Meimi. Now in Umbra the second prequel of the Dimension Drift series we get to see things from Throne’s point of view.

I really enjoyed seeing things from Throne’s side and getting to know his character and who he is and what makes him who he is. I like stories where you get to know each character separately and seeing the world through their eyes. I also like all the technology and how they traveled from one dimension to another. It was like watching a movie playing out in my head. It was like the author and I was on the same page and we both had ESP.

Umbra may only be a short story that can be read in a couple of hours but it definitely reads like a full length novel and is fast paced with action from beginning to end. It will pull you into its depths from the first page and keep you mesmerized right up until you have turned that last page and then leave you wanting more.

I would recommend Umbra to all fans of dystopia set in a futurist world and filled with lots of action from front to back.

Having also read the first prequel 'Scythe' I must say I'm really looking forward to reading the main story!

Umbra takes you along with Thorne, we get to know a bit more about him, his family and the situation they are in. What troubles they have themselves on Umbra (well, the royal family at least) and what transpired for Thorne to be on Earth for Meimi. It was especially nice reading his point of view of the happenings in Scythe.

It was well written with no (noticeable) errors and there is no sex described (if that is important to you).

I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book and just like with Scythe, it was a short and easy read, even for someone not that into sci-fi this is a perfect mix!

This too, like the first in the prequel portion of this series was . . . . Exciting. Entertaining. Leading. Compelling. Since prequel book one, I wanted to know more of Thorne. I wanted to see more of him and inside his head. I go the chance and now paired with Scythe (prequel book 1) I am immersed all inside this world once again.

Christian Bauer take you on a journey to a world and gives you a detail description of the world, its people, its layers that surround the characters. You have so much to grab hold of and so much to want to return to when you finally put it down. In other words a stale to my CB review's, she brings on great visual cues, awesome world building, and well developed characters. A fantasy world that I am very excited to sink right in to.

I have to start this with I'm a huge fan of this author. There isn't anything I've read from her that I haven't liked. I'm not usually a big fan of prequels but this one was really good. It is a short book but has a lot in it. Thorne is in line for the throne of the Omniverse but his father is a complete and total jerk.

I liked how the author created the worlds, I love to get insights into how others' minds work. Thorne is a good guy. He goes around saving worlds and then he meets Meimi. There is plenty of action and adventure in this short story.

It was a 5/5. I'm going to go back and read the first prequel before jumping into Alien Minds but I can't wait for it!

Have you read Scythe and fallen in love with the characters like the rest of us? Then I’m sure you’re ready for the next prequel installment, Umbra. Told first person from Thorne’s point of view, we really dig deep into his backstory, and get to know him and his alien race a little better. I couldn’t wait to check this book out, and I’m glad I got the chance to.

This book follows the same time line as Scythe, but from Thorne's side of the story. I do recommend reading Scythe first, but it's not necessary. They can be read in either order. You learn more about Thorne's family, and his life as a prince. You also find out why his family would help someone from Earth. This book also goes a little bit past the ending of Scythe which is nice because you learn some more about what she won't know for reasons that are obvious after reading Scythe. There is a bit of violence, no adult content, and really cool technology.

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

Bauer has some amazing world building skills I must say as yet again my mind is blown after reading one of her books. This prequel gives insight into Thorne and the people of Umbra in general as this story unfolds. Being a new world I had no clue what to expect so each page held a brand new surprise. I am already addicted to the characters what can I say. A must read for fans of the author or just urban fantasy in general. I totally loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.

This book was amazing!

I remember reading Scythe and thought holy hell, this series is going to be good. I read Umbra and it blew my mind! This is a prequel to the series in Thorne's POV and is so imaginative, I can't think of anything else like it.

Deciding to help a human, and one that helped his ass of a father get the throne, Thorne finds Meimi and starts to fall for her.

This was an excellent story to start the beginning of a original world.

I enjoyed this second book that told of events from Thorne's point of view. It is always interesting to get the story from the love interest as it adds an added dimension. Ms. Bauer's story lines and world building fascinating and I tend to read her books in one sitting.

This was a great read! I personally think POVs from the hero are a little more fascinating than those of their heroines and that did not change with this story. Thorne really gives you insight as to how important his relationship (lack of relationship?) with Meimi is. I think both Scythe and Umbra together compliment each other. Can not wait to be able to read the next book in this series!

So this book we follow the character Thorn and learn about what makes him tick. We find out he’s got some serious issues he needs to work through and he’s got to figure out what he’s willing to do to get through them. This story builds a world of action, adventure and makes you see things in a different light. Can’t wait for the next one!!!!

I love this world!

This is the second prequel before the full-length first book, and it gave an interesting view from the ''other side''. It answered a lot of questions I had from the first prequel, and it gave me a good foundation for the continuation of the series.

This title provides a bit more detail about Thorne and his family including his father who is becoming more dangerous by the day.

The timeline does go back through some of the timeline from the first title, Scythe, Only this time the viewpoint is all Thorne.

Note ~ I was provided with a digital copy via NetGalley. No promise of a review here was given and all opinions are my own.
