Matilda Dare still can’t sleep. Since she’s arrived in Goodnight, New Mexico, she’s solved one murder and had more than one conversation with a dead woman. Obsessed with finding the woman’s killer, she has to put that on hold when her newspaper receives a mysterious, coded letter. When the author of the letter winds up dead, Matilda is thrust into a mystery that puts her new friends into danger. The hunky Sheriff Goodnight and Matilda’s hunky roommate Boone are along for the ride in this funny action adventure that might end up spelling lights out for Matilda.
A Doom with a View is the second installment in the small town mystery romance Goodnight Mysteries series and a spinoff of the Matchmaker Mysteries.
Elise Sax worked as a journalist for fifteen years, mostly in Paris, France. She took a detour from journalism and became a private investigator before trying her hand at writing fiction. She lives in Southern California with her two sons. An Affair to Dismember is her first novel.
4.5 stars Does it have over the top humour? Yes, it does ... but it is so much fun! A big variety of different, interesting and unusual characters, a fast paced story and a gripping back ground mystery. The one thing that bothers me a bit is that the solution to the mystery always comes a little bit out of nowhere and is not really comprehensible. I am really enjoying this series.
Expect lots of laughter, murder and a sexy love triangle. Matilda can see dead people, solve murders and gives great one liner comebacks. Boone, one of the Goodnight brothers, is mysterious and hunky. Amos, the sheriff Goodnight brother, is a hot guy with a badge and eyes for Matilda. She has two guys at her beck and call. The town of Goodnight is full of crazy, funny, quirky people. Sax always writes great stories to make you laugh and think. I received an early copy from the author and voluntarily wrote this review.
This read had all the kookiness, fun, friendship and mystery I enjoy. Giraffes running rampant, the great Chile Cook-Off, the weirdo townsfolk, plus the murder mysteries. Yes, more than one. While the main murders get solved in this book, the serial killer murders, which are more sobering, continue to haunt the heroine in the form of the dead girls appearing to her with the same ominous message. But it's not overplayed to turn this from cosy and fun to thriller, which is good. Starting the next book in the series now!
Elise Sax is my favorite author, hands down. The lady can do no wrong and I don’t know if she could write a bad book if she tried. When I buy her books, I know I’m going to get a crazy, wacky, hilarious story with a great mystery that ends well. My life is full of stress and strain and she helps me to relax and just enjoy a few moments to myself. The book was outstanding. I love Matilda and I love this town!
4.5 stars. I read all 5 books in this series in the last few days so I'm just going to do a bulk review.
Over the past few months I've been sick, on bad meds, had surgery and a mental funk that went with all that. It was starting to get pretty bad. My mother noticed I hadn't even touched a book in months. If you know me, you know I love to read, it's my escape. For me to not read means life is majorly sucking.
I forced myself to pick up a book. Forced myself to read. I picked this author because her stories make me crack up, I love her characters and the way she tells a story.
I put the first book down a few times in the very beginning because of me not the book. Then it just grabbed me and 5 books were done in 3 days.
This author hasn't failed me yet. If you need an escape for a few hours, she is definitely one of my top go to writers.
Matilda is hot on the trail of a killer and still seeing dead girls. This time she gets a little help from Boone. Poor, poor Boone! Doom with a View is another laugh out loud mystery. Full of eccentric characters in crazy situations. Elise Sax will forever be a one click with no hesitation for me. I can’t wait for the next installment in the Goodnight Mysteries!
A Doom with a View by Elise Sax is book two in the Goodnight Mysteries series and was even better than the first. Ms. Sax never disappoints when it comes to murder, zany characters and situations that make me laugh out loud.
This didn't quite work for me. I think it's a bit too silly?
And don't get me wrong, I read this because I was looking for silly. I've read the first one (and enjoyed it). I was fully prepared for this to be absurd from start to finish. And it was. It even made me laugh several times (mostly to do with the the giraffes marauding about town, which I had forgotten about). But I also think that while I don't need this type of thing to be practical, or realistic, I do think I need it to be a bit more internally consistent, and hang together a bit more.
Everything felt just too extreme, by which I mean everything was exaggerated with humorous intent. But I think it was exaggerated too much, to the point that the main narrative got somewhat lost.
Also, I could have done with less Boone getting seriously injured while trying to save Miranda's life and it being played for comedy. Also, Miranda seriously lusting after both Amos and Boone was getting a bit cringey to me, mainly because they're brothers with an already strained relationship. Just not a fan of that trope.
That said, I own the third one, and the next time I'm in need of some no-thinking reading, I'll probably flip through it.
ANOTHER ZANY TRIP TO GOODNIGHT, IT DIDN'T DISSAPOINT INSANITY STILL THRIVES THERE. NO WONDER MATILDA HAS SO MANY PERCULIAR BRAIN FART MOMENTS, SHES SLEEP DEPRIVED... ALL OF HER STRANGE BEHAVIOR CAN BE BLAMED ON LACK OF SLEEP. THAT IS NOT HEALTHY AND IT WILL KILL YOU IF SOMETHING ISN'T DONE ABOUT.CRAZY. 'D
Not only am I homesick for New Mexico, I’m homesick for Goodnight, NM, and it only exists in books and electrons!
Gracious, in writing this review, I came to the realization I never reviewed the first book, Die Noon. I don’t know how that happened, other than I’m old and spaced on it. Fortunately, both books were offered together, and I read Die Noon a second time, and if possible, I laughed even more. Sax has a somewhat warped sense of humor which I love. She also has a conversational way of writing, which I also like.
Our protagonist, Matilda Dare, inherits a small town newspaper from an uncle. She also inherits all the people in the small town, both the hunky sheriff and his twin brother, equally hunky, maybe even more so. Oh, did I mention the twin brother rented a room at her house and paid rent for a year, so he’s very much in the picture. When he’s home. It helps they aren’t on speaking terms. Sort of.
Matilda Dare is trouble in human form. Wherever she goes, she seems to find trouble—bodies, ghosts, evil people. She really tries to stay out of trouble, but she’s curious, and she’s pretty sure she’s solved the murder, the kidnapping, whatever.
She’s also sworn off men. Technically, she’s still married. Her soon-to-be-ex is a convicted murderer and is spending life in San Quentin, or an equally romantic space for murder, and does not want the divorce because if it goes through, he loses his inheritance. She’s also very human.
Yes, there is sex in the books. Tastefully done. Still, if your kids are wanting to read them, I suggest you read one or two beforehand, as you know what their tender psyches can handle, or not. (I found with mine, that they just weren’t into those parts and skimmed until they got back to what they consider ‘the good stuff’.)
Having read the first two books, I am so looking forward to the rest of the series. I think they shall become the carrot that I may indulge in once my chores are completed. ;-)
It has been suggested more than once that Matilda might have opened a portal to hell. Not sure that's possible, but something is going on in Goodnight, NM. Matilda Dare is still unable to sleep and still wanders about during the night, sometimes cleaning, sometimes walking the dogs in the woods, and sometimes working out details of crimes or being attacked by criminals. There are still three dozen giraffes loose in the area that carry a bounty of $2,000 each for being captured and returned unharmed to the town so they can be returned to their zoo. Now to add to the craziness is a letter to the editor with initials...and these people are dying. Oh yea, witches and dead people... Talk about zany/wacky/quirky!
I think I am addicted to finding out more about Matilda and maybe solving a serial killing. I am hooked because the author makes situations so funny, believable, and unbelievable at the same time. I can't imagine none of this was going on pre-Matilda, because one person couldn't impact a town as much as the folks of Goodnight are convinced that Matilda is.
For a chance to escape the daily drudge or just laugh a lot, pick up this series and start reading. (Oh an aside to a reviewer who deleted their book because of a cuss word. There are very few used in the two books I have read so far...That might have been a rash decision that cost the reader a lot of fun.)
So very funny. It's the middle of the night and I am wondering who I may have woken up as I laugh hysterically. The mystery solved was an awesome story, complex when I think back on it now, but it rolled out easily and with a lot of humor. Several plot lines kept the book fast paced. One plot is still developing and I wish it would get resolved. I am not a fan of open plots. But the writing is so good, I know I will read every new book out out.
With the progression of the series, there is a flow of sorts found. More character development made this book a good to read! Looking forward to more. I wonder... Does Matilda get her divorce? Who does she pick between the Goodnight brothers? Will she ever find the serial killer before he finds her? I guess there is more to read in the next book to find out. 4 stars
I love a series like this where the characters go from book to book, but you still get a tidy ending. The author doesn't disappoint with laugh out loud moments. Yes, people do stop and stare, but I just smile. I don't like to give away plots or stories. This is a continuation of Matilda, her insomnia, OCD, a town full of characters you can't help but love, and murder. So good you just have to read it for yourself.
3.5 stars. A silly, funny, fun read. I laughed out loud in quite a few spots. I didn't like how the MC solved the mystery- there was no real explanation of how the clues added together for her to come to that conclusion; it just happened as she confronted the culprit. Otherwise, really enjoyed the book.
OMG! I laughed so much my husband thought I finally lost my marbles. Believe me, after knee replacement surgery, laughing doesn't come easy! I forgot about the pain and enjoyed the story. Don't miss this series.
Elise sure can make you laugh. Always turns a rainy day into a sunny day. Matilda sure can get herself into hot water however it’s fun seeing who will get her out, Boone or Amos. Can’t wait until book three in February.
You'd think that that nothing ever happened in Goodnight, New Mexico, before Matilda moved there, but the townspeople act very blase for that to be the truth. This is funny stuff.
Ok, it's a little out there. Could half of this stuff actually happen? No. But I love the craziness! The characters are great and make me laugh out loud. After a stressful day of real life and work, this series is exactly what I need to relax and unwind.
A little bit over the top, funny cosy small town murder mystery. The cast of characters are adorable and quirky. There is an overarching story, no spoiler, through books 1 and 2 and I’m starting book 3 immediately.
3.5 and a rollicking adventure. Some very funny laugh out loud scenarios but more style than substance as a serious mystery. But entertainment value is off the charts! Second in a series and good to read in order.
Another good story in this series. Murder and mayhem once again follow Matilda around whilst she is trying to keep her hormones in control. A good twist in the story and on completing the book you are drawn to wanting the next book in the series. Very well written with plenty to laugh at too.
Small town mystery, murder and antics. Good character development over book 1 and 2 with the history of some characters being revealed. I am looking forward to book 3.
