What fun! A playful pack of dogs chase a ball and find new friends! This Level C book is perfect for kindergarteners and rising first graders.
I see a ball. The bird has the ball. The whale has the ball. The lion has the ball. Gulp! No more ball!

I See A Cat and See Me Run, two books written and illustrated by Paul Meisel, received the Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor Award from the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association. Potty training can be a challenge. YOU POOP HERE by Paul Meisel can help lessen a child's fear of using a potty: Elephants poop in the grass. Fish and alligator poop in the water. Where do you poop (and pee)? In the potty of course. In a starred review SLJ said about You Poop Here: "An excellent first purchase for anyone looking to expand their potty learning collection, and an ideal complement to Taro Gomi’s classic Everyone Poops." Paul Meisel is also the author/illustrator of My Awesome Summer by P. Mantis (Holiday House Publishers) which was named by the AAAS/Subaru SB&F Prizes as a 2018 finalist for best books of the year in the Children's Science Picture Books category. My Happy Year by E. Bluebird (about Eastern Bluebirds) and My Stinky Summer by S. Bug (about brown marmorated stink bugs) are two other books in this Nature Diary series. Other books that Paul Meisel wrote and illustrated are: See Me Dig, See Me Play, Anna And Samia, and Good Night, Bat! Good Morning, Squirrel!
Aww, I admit - this one probably doesn't deserve five stars, but as a dog lover, it tickled my funny bone. The text is insanely simple - a few words per page, and basically boils down to Dogs love to chase things.
Part of the "I Like to Read" series for beginning readers, this charming book will have them howling in delight and then clamoring to read it again and again. Why? Well, the simple text and illustrations, created with watercolor and acrylic and then digitally finished, show just how dogs tend to act when it comes to fetching. The first page shows several dogs watching as a human throws a tennis ball into the air. They only hesitate a moment, and then, they're off, chasing it wherever goes. the ball has some assistance from various animals as it lands and then is moved along by a beaver, a bird, and a whale. Nothing can stop those dogs from their pursuit until it is truly gone and not coming back. Readers need not worry, though, since the human also has a stick as shown on the last page. The facial expressions of those dogs as they get ready for yet another romp say everything. They're still eager but also tired with a couple of dog tongues hanging out. Surely, they hope this object won't be as hard to catch as the other one.
This is a Guided Reading Level C book in the "I Like to Read" series, meaning it is composed of simple sentences like "I see the ball." "The ball is wet." These easy-to-read sentences are accompanied by delightful humorous and energetic illustrations. A pack of dogs sees a ball being thrown and they are immediately in a chasing frenzy. This ball, however, goes through a variety of animals in its journey, with the dogs in hot single-minded pursuit, until it is swallowed by a lion. Wait, is that a stick? Silly, fun, and easy, this will be a good choice for beginning readers.
I love See Me Play for emerging readers. There are some sight words like "play," "bird," and "whale" that could require support, however, they're matched with the pictures as well so your kiddo may be able to figure them out thanks to the context. Outside of that, this book is primarily short vowels and smaller words, so it's great for any child whose starting to learn their reading skills.
With a beginning reader in my house, I have come to realize how incredibly difficult it is to find beginning books that aren't painfully boring, outdated, or just plain dumb. This was a delightful beginning reader with a cute story, great illustrations, and the perfect amount of text. I can't wait to lookup more of this author's work.
The illustrations of this book delighted me much more than the words-- which makes sense since it's an beginning reader book. Meisel's drawings are so silly and charming, each dog is unique and that picture of the whale with a ball in its mouth... well that might just be one of my favorite images ever.
Great ending--made me laugh--but the plot's a bit more simplistic than the first two, which I enjoy immensely and use in storytime all the time. A great low-level beginning reader, though. All of the series is!
When my kindergartener and I read this book, we play "follow the dog you like best." She loves not only figuring out where the ball is off to, but how her favorite furry friend is reacting to the events as well. A Oct '19 CHUH elementary book club pick.
Very simple early reader with a lot of action but little text. A ball gets thrown in the air, and a pack of dogs takes off after it. The ball gets batted around into all sorts of unlikely places, but the dogs keep chasing. I did like the twist at the end.
A group of dogs chase a ball around the world until it meets an unfortunate end. Another simple, funny beginning reader in the I Like to Read series. Guided Reading Level C.
I had to read this for class. It was rather… underwhelming. Every sentence was basically the same! That doesn't provide variety for kids. Not a good book. Don't waste your money.
