Johanna Helen Howard was born on March 10, 1952 in Germany, where her father, Edwin Dennis Howard, a soldier in the U.S. Army was stationed. The family moved about a great deal when she was young. Her father always dreamed of retiring to Hawaii, and after he passed away in 1964 Johanna and her mother settled there to honor him.

In 1970, when she was still in school, she married Ralph Lindsey, becoming a young housewife. The marriage had three children; Alfred, Joseph and Garret, who already have made her a grandmother. After her husband's death, Johanna moved to Maine, New England, to stay near her family.

Johanna Lindsey wrote her first book, Captive Bride in 1977 "on a whim", and the book was a success. By 2006, with over 58 Million copies of her books have been sold worldwide, with translations appearing in 12 languages, Johanna Lindsey is one of the world's most popular authors of historical romance.

Johanna's books span the various eras of history, including books set in the Middle Ages, the American "Old West" and the popular Regency England-Scotland. She has even written a few sci-fi romances. By far the most popular among her books are the stories about the Malory-Anderson Family, a Regency England saga.

Johanna Lindsey died on Oct. 27, 2019 in Nashua, N.H. She was 67.

Johanna Lindsey again delivers a Historical Romance with a addicting plot full of adventure, intrigue, despicable villians, worthy supporting characters and spirited lovers who through misunderstandings gets separated but it`s fate`s will to always reunite them,as they are soulmates. Reading about the very bright and beautiful spitfire of a heroine Angela Sherrington was a delight. The interesting past of her mother with the heros father were interesting and many things became clear after the truth got cleared. How she faithfully loved the hero, the rebellious and dangerous Bradford Maitland all these years and how well her dreams finally got true. Bradford said many things to hurt Angela after her supposed "betrayals", but underneath that were the love he so suffered for her, and i actually love the scene where he embraces her after he had been chasing her, and i guess it was that "real" moment he realized his love for her, and do vow her to marry him.Despite his scoundrel ways,i just couldn`t hate this man.He and Angela (he calls her his Angel, dreamy sigh) have a very passionate love for each other that the author succeded in putting out without much words. The sex-scenes are not graphic, but what showed told true passion, and the sparkles and the angst were everywhere. It was great to also meet Hank Chavez, and WOW what a sexy mexican he is!His scenes with Angela are very funny, and i am not surprised if Angela would have suscumbed to the temptation, but he would have been a substitute for Bradford anyway..But he will have his own story in the sequel to this one "Heart of Thunder" where he will meet his soulmate in Samantha. There are many men who wants Angela in this book, and yeah no wonder for Bradford`s explosive jealousy everytime. But i belive now after everything they got through together that he will trust her with all his heart.I also wish the epilogue were longer! Another page-turning Keeper by Johanna Lindsey,i couldn`t put this book down once i started it!

Bradford Maitland is the number one hated hero of all time for me. Everything he did rubbed me the wrong way. I know that in Romancelandia, heroes get away with some outlandish things, but he really angered me the way he treated Angela and was so dismissive of her feelings. He's one of those guys who thinks he can do whatever he wants because he's rich and handsome. Whatever dude. This is one of the Johanna Lindsey books that I got rid of because I didn't want a copy polluting my keeper shelves. I admit I reread the scenes with Hank Chavez in them. I almost wish that he and Angela had gotten together instead of stupid idiot Maitland. I felt sort of bad because I liked Heart of Thunder (except for the rape scene), but I didn't want to read this book again, yet they are related. It's been such a long time, I am tempted to reread it to see if I hate Maitland just as much twenty years down the road.

I honestly dislike the Old South/Antebellum storylines intensely. Also I hate when the hero is all richy rich and looks down on the heroine because she comes from modest origins. I hate it the other way around too. I think that was part of the reason Bradford thought it was okay to kidnap this girl and keep her as his mistress. I know at first it was mistaken identity, but he found out she was a virgin and decided to keep her anyway, and didn't care if she liked it or not. Of course, she is sexually enslaved, so she goes along with it anyway, although it's clear he isn't even a nice person. I do like kidnap/captive storylines, but something about this scenario was just wrong for me. I think it's because of Maitland's arrogance and the way he looked down on Angela. I can't stand snobbery. Also I don't like people who feel entitled to do whatever they want to others, right or wrong.

Really I don't see what Angela saw in this fool. She is much too good for this man. If I get a chance, and a lot of free time, I might reread it to see if I hate this book as violently as I did then.

DNF @ 66%

So the story with this book goes, I bought it used in November 2023, I started reading it in December, and I really was enjoying what I was reading. Then I got Covid and I put all the books I was currently reading down (including the many DNF’s some of you may have saw from late December/early January) because I just had no desire to read while I was very sick. I put down all the other books from that time, soft DNF’ing them, but I really held out hope I’d be able to finish this one. For 1, I was enjoying it a lot, and 2, I was really far into the story. But the months passed and I didn’t end up picking this one up again. So I will just say what I did enjoy/dislike about this book so far.

I loved the beginning of this book, especially the FMC growing up from a child to a teenager, and I really wished we got so much more of that storyline. I wish this book was so much longer, more focused on the FMC just growing up right after the Civil War. (However, is their any use critiquing a book this old by an unfortunately deceased author?) I also loved the beginning of the FMC and MMC’s romance—despite the very glaring problematic bodice ripper elements that Johanna Lindsey is known for. I especially loved when the FMC was young and had a hopeless crush on the MMC. It was super cute, and didn’t feel like it was done in a creepy way which is kind of what I admittedly excepted from Johanna Lindsay (as much as I love her). So this book really did have a lot going for it, it just sucks I couldn’t get myself to continue.

Wow, this book was pretty bad. It wasn't interesting at all. All I can say is that I gave up at 40% because the story was dumb and I was bored. It was written very badly and the hero had the sex appeal of a slug. If you want to read a good JL, try "Fire's of Winter."

Catching up with an author whose books I have always loved reading! Historical Romance genre is itself very appealing so when the Western ruggedness gets added to it, it becomes a winning option. Angela and Bradford's story however lagged a lot, Bradford is shown as a very short tempered and jealous lover but the after a few 100 pages the jealousy begins to grate. And of course every breathing living person wanting Angela in their bed became boring after a while. The whole book could have been shorter with 100 pages less which would have made it interesting but the hero misunderstanding, heroine running away, hero following again misunderstanding, well..u get the picture..again cut the 100 pages away and I would have enjoyed it more. But as I love reading these books just for the sake of mindless reading, it was ok for me.

Re-read 2022 **. 3.5 🌟

Not one of JLs better books.
It’s a slow burn, story dragged.
- rags to riches story. (She’s white trash, hes mega rich)
- h loved him since forever. Been pining for him since she was 11. (One of my pet peeve is when the h is the one who’s obsessed)

- H barely noticed her when she was younger.- The H had a fiancée he loved and took a long time to get over. His brother ends up marrying the ow.

Barely a 2 star

OK, before I start ripping this book apart let me say that JL is one of my favourite authors and at the moment I am trying to whizz my way through all her books and so far this one is the worst.

Lets start with the Hero Bradford maitland, he was a jealous wimp that had no sex appeal whatsoever, I have read other books by JL where the Hero's forced the heroine's and yet they were more appealing and likeable than Bradford, and I know that sounds sick but it's just those hero's were far better written than this one.He was so arrogant. Then we have the Heroine Angela Sherrington who was so annoyingly flawlessly beautiful that EVERY man she met wanted her (I think I counted 6), in my opinion she was a flirt and a silly nitwit. i just couldn't like them and felt no romance or passion between them at all.

Where to begin with the plot that was made up of one misunderstanding after another and both the H/H jumping to conclusions and Bradford hitting everyone that looked at Angela. Then we have the scene in the inn where Brad sees Angela with Grant in the bedroom and walks away quietly!! Well that killed the plot for me, because it is so unbelievable from the fella that tracked her down , kidnapped her and spent the entire book pounding everyone in sight that glanced at her. I can't imagine him walking away. Apart from Grant the only person I liked in this book and the reason I gave it 2 stars instead of one was Hank the highwayman and I am glad to hear he gets his own book in "Heart of Thunder" so Im hoping thats better. The only thing I will say to anyone who has just started reading JL and enjoyed this , you are in for an even greater treat when you read her other books.

A few times during the year, I'll get such a intense itch I know only sinking my teeth into a Johanna Lindsey novel will be able to scratch.

And usually, Johanna Lindsey's prose and her delicious descriptions of the world-building is more than enough for me to enjoy her books, despite miscommunication being one of my most hated tropes. Well, Johanna Lindsey wouldn't be Johanna Lindsey—master of over-the-top reactions and characters too prideful for their own good—if there weren't one giant miscommunication being the driving force between the main couple until the very end.
Usually I'd be won over by the main couple's antics by the end of the book anyway. However, this is the first time I wasn't satisfied at all after reading the main couple's teary apologies and confessions of love.

I think there was a lack of interaction that would fully convince me about them being head over heels in love with one another. They kept saying that they loved each other, but it happened too fast and too effortlessly for it not to feel like infatuation. And during the times something monumental WOULD have happened, it all happened off-page and summarized to oblivion.
So when the miscommunication came along, I could not have cared less about any of them and their woe is me!s.

But then again, a far more simple explanation could be that the FMC had magical, violet eyes that would bewitch men to fall in love with her instantaneously.
Or, alternatively, if not that, to want to fuck her.

I'm not kidding guys. Half of the men in the story wanted to either marry or rape her.

Another thing that bothered me was the unfinished feeling. The ending felt rushed, and I was left wondering about a lot of things. I wonder if it was set up this way to continue the plots in spin-offs or sequels.
Not every story needs a resolution, but I just thought it was weird that the MMC's family was faded out of the story half-way through the book, and to not be mentioned at all for the rest of it.
You could argue that they had nothing else to contribute to the story/to the couple once , but even the ending itself feels dissatisfactory. What happens to the FMC and the MMC now? Where will they go, what will they do?

It's as if the story was cut off mid-sentence and instead of trying to stitch it back together, a bandage was just slapped on the wound to stop it from bleeding.

All in all, too much tell, not enough show, and my Johanna Lindsey itch remains unscratched.

This book lost its way halfway through. That's too bad, because it got off to a good start. Set in the south in Civil War days, Poor farmgirl Angela Sherrington has loved wealthy plantation heir Bradford Maitland since she was a child, despite their age difference and his love for another young woman (who dumps him and marries his brother when Bradford sides with the Union). For reasons no one can understand, Bradford's father makes Angela a part of the family when she's all alone at 17, and sends her to school in the north. Without giving away details, I'll say that while there, Angela manages to have a passionate encounter with Bradford, who has no idea who she is, calling herself "Angel Smith". When she graduates, at 21, (again I won't spoil details) she soon finds her dream of a life with Bradford about to come true.

I think the trouble was, everything was going too well, and Ms. Lindsey had to throw a wrench in the works to keep things exciting, but she went overboard and used dynamite instead, and blew the story apart.

Believing a conversation she overhears between Bradford and his jealous, unhappily married sister-in-law who wants him back, Angela now thinks Bradford is her half-brother, and does what the h unfortunately does all too often, runs away. She enlists the help of Bradford's friend Grant (who's foreman on Bradford' s Texas ranch) to head out west and try to find her long-lost mother. Grant, meanwhile, had feelings for Angela, (which had caused a fight with a jealous Bradford at the plantation ball) and tried to persuade her to marry him. After a few unsuccessful seduction attempts, he agrees to be her friend and they travel to Texas together.

Where the book derails is with the foolishness of its supposedly destined for each other couple, which in this case seems a lot of hogwash. Bradford has a real problem with jealousy, so much so that if Angela just dances with or acts friendly toward another man, he has a hissy fit. At the ball, he drags her away from one dance partner, then punches Grant, who made a pass at her, not knowing she was Bradford's intended. He keeps apologizing, and needing her assurance that she loves only him, and still he's insecure.

Then, after he follows her to Texas (thinking she dumped him for Grant) he catches them in what looks like a compromising situation, but just leaves without them knowing he's there. We're supposed to buy this, after the way he had jealous temper tantrums all over the place before??? Instead, he keeps telling himself she's a slut, whore, tramp, and other names, and he was a fool to ever believe in her. Later, (when they end up at the ranch at the same time) he childishly tells her he got married, just to hurt her, because he thinks she and Grant are lovers, and picks yet another fight with Grant. Silly, silly, silly!!

Angela can be silly, too. The words "consider the source" must be foreign to her, because (like many a h before and after) she believes words that come out of the mouth of her rival and takes them at face value. So off she goes! Then, when she hears Bradford has a fiance (a convenience engagement, which he should have broken right after he proposed to Angela), she forgets all his declarations of love, and the conversation she overheard (this girl loves to eavesdrop), where Bradford made it clear how much Angela means to him, and suddenly he becomes a lying scoundrel who was only using her.

Isn't it beautiful, how much faith and trust this couple have for each other?

To make matters worse, Ms. Lindsey throws in unnecessary characters, like Hank, a half Mexican outlaw, who robs the stage Angela's on, gets the hots for her and returns her things, tries to get her into bed and might have succeeded, if she hadn't called him Bradford. (That's enough to make a guy lose inches fast!)

(Don't think too badly of Angela almost succumbing to lust, as at the time she thought Bradford was her brother and off limits for good, "scoundrel" or not. Besides, she only wanted Hank because he looked like Bradford.)

Then, there's a psycho guy, Billy, who's been obsessed with Angela for years, ever since he wasn't able to have his way with her. Then, throw in a disgruntled, unscrupulous businessman who wants revenge on Bradford, and you have....

One big mess!!

it was too much silliness, too much melodrama, too much misunderstanding, just too much!

I wish Ms. Lindsey had gone back to the night of the ball, torn up the rest of the book, and taken it from there again, and made it into a better story.

ini novel johanna lindsey yg lumayan beda ama yg novel2 dia sebelumnya yg udah aku baca.

pertama, karna tokoh utamanya bukan dari keluarga bangsawan.
kedua, karakter utama ceweknya emang rada2 gampangan nih.. gak nyangka aja gitu, mau diapa2in walaupun ama org yg disukai

tapi aku suka konfliknya. top deh!

Published originally in 1982.

A wonderful read.....so passionate and loving.

For Angela love started with a splash of mud, a ruined dress, a smile, and a gold coin. She carried on believing in Bradford through many years of not seeing him but he would pop-into her life and save her once again, cementing her love. For him he never knew her name and spends years searching for her after night of passion......never knowing that she is his dirt poor neighbor.

Finally Bradford comes home only to discover his love and they make plans to marry but jealously, death, and lies put an end to their dreams....or do they?

Another passionate read full of love, danger, and heartache as only Lindsey can pen....a masterful storyteller that weaves a wonderful tale that I have read over and over again since that first time I found this treasure at a used bookstore back in the 1980's.

Just love this book....and pretty much anything by Lindsey.

This was a pretty typical romance story. Love blah blah jealously blah blah anger blah blah miscommunication.... You get the idea.

Overall it was pretty entertaining and definitely was a fast read. I whipped through this one in a couple of hours on the day after Thanksgiving morning. My biggest gripe about the story is that I have never in my life met someone as beautiful, as desirable and as sexy as the main character. Any man that she meets falls head over heals in love with her and wants to take her to bed immediately. Seriously????? That needed a little work. Also, there were a few questions unresolved but love conquers all so it shouldn't matter right? The things that were resolved were resolved so perfectly that it couldn't happen anywhere but in a romance novel. Ahhh.... romance.

No chemistry at all >.<

I didn't enjoy this one as much as other Johanna Lindsey I've read as there were several eye roll moments. The ending was a mess with some issues unresolved & forgiveness too easily given for atrocious behaviour.

The hero was arrogant, dictatorial, jelous & refused to listen. I was routing for the sexy Mexican bandit.

Silly and improbable, but entertaining in the end, "Glorious Angel" is an 1860s Cinderella story, relating the tempestuous love affair of poor Alabama sharecropper's daughter Angela Sherrington and Bradford Maitland, the heir to a real estate and agricultural empire (he conveniently fights for the Union during the Civil War, which is breezily dealt with in the first few chapters). Angela has nursed a crush on Bradford since her teenage years; fate throws them together when, during Bradford's long absence from home, his father makes Angela his ward. The couple don't re-meet cute; they re-meet in a brothel, thanks to a prank pulled on Angela by jealous schoolmates. Suffice to say, lust erupts, which turns into love, which is complicated by their respective tempers and by various misunderstandings, many perpetrated by Bradford's spiteful sister-in-law. As was the case with her immediately preceding novel, "Paradise Wild," Lindsey creates a heroine who enjoys sex from moment one, unlike the heroines of her first few novels. Just as in her first few novels, "Glorious Angel" still features the occasional anachronism (there are not mountain ranges eleven miles outside of Dallas), and head-scratching scenes (in an 1860s house full of servants and relatives, Angela and Brandon somehow manage to carry on nightly romps); and while it stumbles through not just one, but two climactic scenes that put both protagonists in danger, with "Glorious Angel," Lindsey's successful formula began to settle into place.

Did not like this one at all. All of the characters are just so… cartoonish. Billy holding a grudge against Angela for almost a decade just because he failed to rape her the first time, following her practically around the country just to try to do it again? Jeez. Hank going from an outlaw thief to this nice dude who wants to marry Angela and then backs off so easily? Hilarious. Bradford and his literally crazy mood swings? LMAO. He was just as bad as Billy, honestly. I couldn’t take any of it seriously. And Angela is almost raped by practically every male she comes in contact with.

I guess it’s okay if you don’t go into this expecting a great story, but I did. I’d just finished another Lindsey title the other day (published, I believe, 12 years after this one, so the improvements in her writing style and plot development were VERY obvious) and loved it, so I was hoping I’d feel the same about this one.

I first came across Johanna Lindsey by watching Stranger Things - her books are read by Mrs Wheeler - a frustrated 1980s housewife and as I am obsessed with the 80s and the actual history of the time I decided to check this out.
I thought I didn't like the romance genre, on the whole, but I really liked this. There's a mix of politics and feminism with the romance, they even touched on racism.. It wasn't perfect and as it is a historical romance some parts felt just plain wrong to me as a modern reader but this didn't ruin the story for me.
The main character Angela is dirt poor but tough and smart and beautiful - actually the way the author describes the appearance of every character is so romantic that they all sound beautiful, lol! Anyway that really appealed to me and I will continue with the series.

Books I Own. Mad About Series HRBC Challenge 2025. Tropes: American Historical Romance, Romance/Mystery, Love at First Sight, Family/Friends.
MC's h. Angela Sherrington, father sharecropper and drunk, mother left when she was a baby. Her father died and Jacob Maitland became her guardian.
H. Bradford Maitland, eldest son of Jacob Maitland, brother Zachary (Crystal). Maitland's are billionaires owning many businesses and have many properties around the globe. Bradford is now running the company. Zachary is a lawyer.

This is a family saga taking place over many years. It is a love at first sight, rags to riches story and after much heartache and tragedy there is a HEA. There are several mysteries and scheming criminals in the story too. It had a "Gone with the Wind" feel about it. I enjoyed the story. I gave it 4.5 stars.
