"Love Leaves at Midnight" is a marvellous Romantic Historical novel that was probably inspired by
The Prince and the Pauper which was one of my favourite fairy-tails when i was a child. The pace is natural and the descriptions are very vivid. At the urging of her identical cousin,Xenia Sandon takes her place as a bethrothed to the King Istvan of Luthenia. The King is surprised by the tenderness and happiness he feels in front of his fiance when he before only ever felt bored and irritated by her selfish and spoiled attitude.Xenia herself are afraid that the 10 days her cousin gave her will be soon over and that she will have to leave the love of her life to return to her lonely life.

Its easy to see why Barbara Cartland are beloved by romance fans. She knows what we like and she teases us with it until the end where main-leads sweet confessions of love simply swoons us.This book i liked mostly because of Xenia. She was so strong, intelligent and tender. The way she chose to make the King happy and help him in every decisions made me admire her.She never behaved in any stupid or unnecessary way.I liked the man King becomes when he falls for Xenia, but i can`t believe how ignorant he was before he met Xenia when it came to the poor people in Luthenia.Cynical or bored or WHATEVER they are his people and he should have seen for himself however they fared.I mean there are so many things he didn´t know about his own country and that in my opinion made him irresponsible for being the King.It was Xenia who had to open his eyes and tell him to use his brains for the sake of his people.

I love this story. I loved it as a teenager and I still love it. It's almost like the story of the Prince and the Pauper but it's a Princess! Royal twin sisters each have a daughter that look exactly alike but don't know it.

One ran away with a commoner and lived poor but in love. They died and their daughter became a companion to a mean lady. The other sister married the Archduke and that daughter is in love with an Englishman but engaged to a King.

They meet by chance during a train wreck and Johanna, the engaged one wants to be with her lover before she has to be married so she basically forces Xenia to change places for 10 days so she can have a romantic rendezvous. And even though she loves thecLord, she still wants to be a Queen. I did not like her at all. She wasn't evil, but she was very selfish and spoiled.

The heroine goes off to the King and it's immediate love at first sight for her. It takes the King about 1 hour to realize he is in love too. He doesn't understand the change at all from spoiled, hard hearted Johanna to innocent sweet Xenia. I loved how she championed the underdogs in this one and stole the people's heart.

If course, they end up having to marry early due to malcontent in the nation and she keeps waiting for Johanna to arrive. She doesn't so the h goes ahead and marries him and they have a glorious night of divine love. The next day of course Johanna shows up and forces the heroine to leave. She won't let the h explain about anything. So off she goes broken hearted. Will the King find out in time??? Awesome romance and I totally loved it.

5/5⭐

Me encantó.

This is my other very favorite book by Barbara Cartland. Some of her books can be repetitive of eachother, but there are a few that stand out and this is one of them.

Too predictable1 It's like I've read the summary when I was in grade 2 in one of my excercise books but it's an ok book. It should have been more thrilling and attention grabbing rather than me yawning through the pages. It's like a twin cliche' movie where everyone knows what is going to happen and who falls in love with who.

Two stars seems a poor review but honestly I can’t give it a one or a three. I loved - devoured! -Cartland’s books when I was a kid. As...an adult...the heroines are brainless and annoying and wispy and helpless and yet somehow, for example in this book, come up with perfect solutions to crises overnight and live happily ever after. I’m over it. These books had a place in my life when I was much younger, but not any more.

✅️ENERO 2026

With her flaming red hair and emerald green eyes, Xenia’s unusual beauty makes her stand out in any crowd – that is until she unexpectedly meets her long lost cousin, Johanna, amidst the wreckage of a railway accident.

Incredulous at finding her mirror image and desperate for a friend, Xenia’s initial joy is soon replaced by misgivings when Johanna suggests an outrageous plan to swap lives for two weeks. However, these are soon swept aside by her forceful cousin and Xenia finds herself agreeing to help Johanna enjoy ten final days of freedom with the Englishman she loves before her arranged Royal marriage.

As her cousin steals away from the site of the train crash, Xenia suddenly realises all that impersonating Johanna, even for a short while, will entail. Especially as her cousin was travelling to meet and marry her fiancé, King István of Luthenia, and the journey must continue so suspicions are not aroused.

Surrounded by servants and diplomats, Xenia struggles to assume the Royal role that Johanna inhabits so easily and prays that her true identity will not be discovered.

Arriving in Luthenia, Xenia is instantly plunged into a world of political intrigue and drama a million miles away from the quiet life she previously enjoyed in the English countryside. With a Constitutional crisis threatening and rumours of revolution, Luthenia desperately needs this arranged wedding to go ahead to cement allegiances and maintain the balance of power in Europe.

As the Luthenian Court prepares for a grand State wedding and the nuptial date grows ever nearer, it seems that the beautiful cousins have only one desire in common – they both want to marry for love.

But who shall be their bridegrooms?

The King came to Xenia's bed-side and looked at her luxurious red hair shining in the candlelight and at her tender lips, which were trembling because she was afraid. "Do you know how beautiful you are?" he said.

Xenia knew the moment had finally come -- the moment when she must tell him the truth. "I love you!" he cried before she could speak. "I am wildly, crazily in love... I never dreamed I would feel like this... "

"I... have something to... t-tell you." She felt him stiffen and slowly draw back. Xenia took a deep breath. How could she tell him? she asked herself. How could she sweep the happiness from his eyes?
