Hi - I'm Sally Green. I'm the author of the real-world/ fantasy Half Bad Trilogy, which is made up of Half Bad, Half Wild and Half Lost. Most people read them in that order but there's always a few who don't. Many people who read them are teenagers but there's a lot who aren't.

I'm currently working on a new series called The Smoke Thieves, which is due to be published in spring 2018 and is definitely fantasy (there will be a map).

I said I'd never write another trilogy after Half Bad but it seems I lied.

I live in a village in north-west England.

There's some stuff about the Half Bad trilogy at www.halfbadworld.com.

Actual rating: 3.5 (rounded down)

This review shall be shorter than most:

Ambrose really annoyed the hell out of me in this installment. I frequently skimmed his chapters. Catherine’s were, frankly, weaker this time around, too. I really only looked forward to March, Tash, and Edyon’s. A good portion of the first third is the group fleeing. I won’t say from what or whom, but running and hiding and outpacing was the bulk of it. It gets redundant after a while, but also, no less stressful. I was truly worried the entire time for all my favorite characters. I’ve come to find that in this series: anyone is fair game. We get far fewer character deaths as in book one, but still, when they do come, it hurts a bit.

I wished for a fresh batch of interesting, engaging side characters this time around—and more preferably female characters—but, alas, no such luck. One major problem: There is a SEVERE lack of actually good (or frankly interesting) female characters in this series. The only ones we get, quite literally, are Catherine and Tash (and to a lesser extent, Tanya: Catherine’s handmaiden). That’s it. The world here in this book is freakishly patriarchal, misogynistic, and blatantly sexist. And as much as the author lambasts these woeful women’s roles—by making Catherine a feminist or sorts, and Tash a young, scrappy demon hunter—they do nothing to change the fact that it’s all pretty hollow. Lots of hot air about gender roles, but again, ZERO new female characters of import.

The story really didn’t pick up until after the halfway mark (which, if I’m being honest, was disappointing), but by the end, I was anxious as all hell. This series is stress-inducing! I’m beginning to think Sally Green is setting us up for major heartbreak(s) like her Half Bad trilogy come the final installment.

The Demon World was the gripping sequel to The Smoke Thieves, bursting with political intrigue, love and divided loyalty. In some ways it was better then the first book, in some ways it was not, but overall I enjoyed it very much.

Plot: 4/5
Characters: 4/5
Writing: 4/5

Just like The Smoke Thieves, this book had five main point of view characters: Catherine, Ambrose, Tash, Edyon and March. Tszayn also got one point of view chapter and it was really interesting to get into his head for once. I think that the character perspectives were better allotted and spread out between the characters than the first book but that is probably because we didn't need to be individually introduced to them all like before. I felt like each character got sufficient time in their perspective to tell their story. Nevertheless, it did feel like not as much happened in this book as in The Smoke Thieves and I got the sense that the characters were moving into position for whatever was going to happen in the next novel in the series.

--- Catherine ---

I loved how Catherine's character grew and developed even more in this book as her power grew. She took charge and led with confidence despite all the people around her who doubted her capabilities. People labelled her as ambitious and greedy for wanting to rule and lead the army because apparently those were jobs only for a man but she didn't let that stop her from proving them wrong.

--- Ambrose ---

Ambrose was still struggling with all of the events from the previous book and all he wanted to do was to keep Catherine safe. To be honest he annoyed me because I thought he treated Catherine unfairly and didn't understand the motivations behind her actions but at the same time she could have been more sensitive to his feelings.

--- Tash ---

Tash's story was super interesting as she went from hunting demons to trying to understand them. She was as stubborn and headstrong (but also adorable) as usual but her persistence allowed her to discover an important secret. Through her we get to discover more about the demons and the demon world and I found it fascinating. However, the cliffhanger at the end was terrifying and I really hope Tash is alright!

--- Edyon ---

Edyon didn't have such a great time in this book (I felt quite bad for him) and he carried on his journey with March to Calidor to find his father. He was his usual exaggerated and comic self and he spent most of the book complaining and complimenting March. Just when I thought he was going to have some happiness, it was promptly ruined.

--- March ---

Throughout the book I was inwardly screaming, 'Tell Edyon the truth, March! Tell him!'. Sadly, March didn't listen. I think he has come so far from the angry, vengeful person he was at the start of The Smoke Thieves and I wanted him to have some happiness as well but he ruined it for himself. He knew that Edyon was in love with him and he loved him back and even though he knew continuing the lie would hurt them more in the long term he still didn't come clean. I think if he'd told Edyon much, much earlier they might have managed to get over it. After the ending of The Demon World, I have no idea what he's going to do next!

Overall, I enjoyed this book and I'm very excited to read the final instalment of the series. It's a novel perfect for fans of fantasies that have no magic and a lot of politics, war and treachery.

Thank you to Penguin for providing me with a review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Lectura terminada!

Fazit

I’m conflicted! I love so many characters (minus one main character) and I think just because of that and their actions throughout I just found so off putting...

Hopefully when I’m home tomorrow I can try and add to this, I still absolutely love it, and Tash’s Chapters really stole the show for me!

No, ten byl zajímavej, ale too little too late.

This book I definitely didn't find as good as #1. It started off great, with a POV of a character I love, but it turns out we only get that POV once. It was jarring to me. I didn't like the whole jealousy plot, it always irks me. And the way everyone accepts Catherine, and those who don't she wins over. I definitely did grow on the parts in the demon world, but even that started to bore me. I wasn't connected with any of these characters, it just had a different feel to #1. I will still read #3, but I struggled through this one.

¿Leyeron algo de Sally Green? ⁣

With Prince Tzsayn captured by the Catherine's family Catherine, Ambrose, Tash, Edyon and March all find themselves fleeing for their lives and as the Brigantine army closes in they're forced into making desperate decisions in order to survive. As the group ends up separated once more they all have different paths to follow that are equally fraught with danger.

Sometimes the second book in a trilogy suffers from second book syndrome and ends up falling a little flat compared to the first but that definitely isn't the case with Sally Green's The Demon World. She was able to immediately draw me back into the story (no mean feat when I've read well over 200 books in between this and the last one!) and within no time at all I was totally caught up in the story. I'll admit I missed Tzsayn's character as he was absent for most of the story but I particularly loved seeing the journey Tash has been on since the beginning of the first book. She's changed so much since we first met her and is without a doubt one of the bravest characters in the series.

Catherine makes some questionable choices along the way but at the same time she proves her intelligence several times over as she overcomes obstacles thrown in her way by people who blame her for Tzsayn's capture. I love the complicated relationship she has with her devoted guard Ambrose but I have a horrible feeling he's going to end up with his heart broken because she's so ambitious.

I don't really want to get into any detail about what happens in this story so I'll just tell you there is plenty of action, we uncover some huge secrets that the Brigantines have been keeping, there are plenty of betrayals along the way, some more surprising than others, and the ending left me with my mouth hanging open in shock. I'm definitely going to be waiting on tenterhooks for the final book in the series to publish!

IT CAN'T END LIKE THAT

So we all know that the second book in a trilogy can be a bit of a slump, and we've all read books that just don't live up to the first book. I was not expecting this book to be like that :(

The ending of the first book made me instantly want to pick up this one. The Smoke Thieves was a bit slow getting off the mark, building up the story and the characters and at the end of that, I was like yessss, now shit is about to go down. Imagine my surprise that almost nothing happens in this book. Like nothing happens. I mean one good thing happens: . But not much else good happens :(

I may have been disappointed by this book, but I'm obviously still very excited to read the next book. I NEED ANSWERS!

I was really looking forward to this part, but it wasn't as good as I hoped it would be. The characters didn't really develop further (except Catherine, I still love her and the way she is trying to break boundaries). The whole book felt a bit "flat", including the writing style. What I did really like was a peak into the Demon world and their society and the role Tash played in that.

From some reviews I was expecting not to like this, but I did! All the characters we met before are still having a hard time. Catherine shows herself to be one smart cookie but is also developing a purple smoke habit. We learn more about the demons and their link with the Brigantine soldiers.

So this was better than the first - still not great - but better.

I just can't get over how childish everyone seems. And they're almost all adults! The only legit child - Tash - actually showed growth and had probably the most interesting storyline of this book. And it actually involved demons which we heavily missing from the first book - despite the title.

I still can't get behind any of the romances and fully believe this series would benefit greatly from not having any romance. I haven't read anything else from this author so I'm not sure how she normally writes romance, but this isn't it. I HATED the scenes with Catherine and Ambrose. Both of them are just idiots and I still don't feel anything between them. Why do they love each other?? We've just been told this and I have yet to understand how this is. And I want to like Catherine, I really do. I admire her for her take charge attitude and wanting to defy her brother & father. But I cannot get behind this Ambrose romance nor her obsession with the smoke.

I do hope that we continue to get more POV's from Tzsayn because I am very intrigued by him and his position.

And of course I don't have the third book so who knows when I will get closure on this LOL

Six of Crows meets Game of Thrones in this spell-binding epic fantasy series. For my review of book one of the series, click here.

In the final few chapters of The Smoke Thieves Catherine, Ambrose, Tash, March and Edyon managed to come together to help one another. But now, war, demons and deceit threaten to tear them apart as they flee the Brigantine army. Split up once again, Tash traverses the dangerous tunnels of the demon world while Catherine and Ambrose attempt to prove their loyalty to the Pitorian elite and Edyon and March find themselves on the wrong side of the law.

The Demon World was one of my most anticipated reads of this year, and it didn’t disappoint. Green weaves a richly intricate tapestry of fantastical worlds, endearing characters and complex political machinations reminiscent of the glory days of Game of Thrones but also utterly unique.

With five protagonists who are more often separate than together, there’s a lot of plot threads to keep track of, but Green does an excellent job of making you care about each of the main characters despite the fact that none of them are perfect. Catherine especially shines in this instalment; it’s been wonderful to see her progression from the downtrodden princess who started out with nothing to the fierce leader she’s become. She reminds me of both Sansa Stark and Daenerys Targaryen - anyone who loves either character is sure to fall in love with her arc in The Demon World (let’s just hope that unlike many Game of Thrones characters she gets the ending she deserves).

Things are left on a massive cliffhanger at the end of The Demon World, with the relationships and lives of some of my favourite characters hanging in the balance - I’m desperate to know when I’ll be able to get my hands on book three!

Many thanks to Penguin for providing a copy of The Demon World. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.

This wasn't a great book, but it also wasn't awful. I really enjoyed #1 but this one felt a bit all over the place to me. I really liked Catherine when she was being a ruler and thinking about her people, but the malarkey with Ambrose just really annoyed me and didn't seem to be well executed in my opinion - it made their chapters a bit of a slog to get through. The rest of the characters are interesting and intriguing, I definitely want to see more of Tash, Edyon and Marsh and I'm so pleased that Prince Tzsyan is back. I look forward to seeing him in the next book, but this one just didn't hit the mark for me.

3,5 🌟 but I rounded it up.
I liked the book. The overall story was new and believable. I liked it that a lot of questions and mysteries of book 1 were answered in book 2.
I also liked the other story lines more and more. Actually, Catherine was my favorite character in book 1 but not in this book. I think she is very selfish in regard to Ambrose.
Also I really wanted more Tzsayn chapters! I got so excited reading the first page and that chapter was the only thing I got. *silent cry*. I still miss the character building on certain side characters bc I sometimes kept confusing them.
I'm very curious for book 3 and how this story ends!
