Another Day, Another Scar…

Conrad needs a rest, and so does Vicky, his partner in fighting magickal crimes. The universe has other ideas.
Conrad had planned the perfect weekend in the English Lake District – tie up some loose ends before spending the night with his girlfriend. Simple. What could possibly go wrong?
Everything is the answer. An innocent man is murdered to cover up magickal misdeeds, and before they can draw breath, Conrad and Vicky are on the trail of a Mage who hides behind dark magick to kill at a distance.

Better

Another enjoyable read, a bit more darker in tone than the first 3 books.

Word building and characters are getting more evolved.

I was really let down by this installment. It was more of a 3.5 stars to be precise. The previous book was so good! I admit I am a sucker for Dragons, sure, but nevertheless it was great.

Eleventh Hour though? It didn't feel like anything was really happening for half the book. There was no clear idea of what exactly the big mystery was and once it's finallyyyyy revealed it was underwhelming and needlessly convoluted.

One of my biggest problems with the overall series is Mina. Up to this book I haven't really cared about her story. This time out we experience more of her and I have to say she is a pain in the ass. I get she's been in jail and is likely to be negative about life in general but man she really treated Conrad like dirt during the trip to Langsdale and the spa. She complained so much! Conrad is always going on about how much he loves her and I don't get it at all from what we've been shown of her. I'm really hoping she turns out to be a secret villain down the line.

Learning more about the magical world is always fascinating, and this time out we get unions and assessors which was an idea I've never seen before. It made it a little more political which I'm not especially keen on though.

I don't want to be spoilery so I'll just add as out of context as I can: SERIOUSLY HE CARRIED HER ON HIS SHOULDERS LIKE A TODDLER THROUGH A FIELD??

I found this outing for Conrad and Vicky to be a tad disjointed. I found it hard to make all the connections, maybe there was a glamour on it ! I still don’t know why the horses were relevant or why the first murder was required, I must have lost concentration . It is quite an entertaining world so I will probably read the next one anyway 😀

Conrad Clarke plans a romantic weekend with his girlfriend but his plans are thwarted by murder, gnomes and magickal shenanigans. In this third installment of the fantastic series Conrad and Vicky investigate a mundane death that turns out to be anything but.

Love this series, binge read it over a few days so my reviews are consequently short.

Killing a giant mythical creature can take a little out of you...especially if you can't use your main magical weapon AND you have barely any MAGICK of your own. But things are what they are and RAF Squadron Leader Conrad Clarke soon is able to add a new title to the many that he has begun to collect...DRAGONSLAYER! But, now the deed is done, and it's time to reap the rewards of the struggle. And so, Conrad and his partner plan a little rest and recovery vacay. Unfortunately, no good deed goes unpunished and soon they find themselves wrapped up in a mundane murder mystery that quickly unravels and places the two in direct confrontation with the local magical authorities who take no direction from London and consider Conrad to be a problem but whose special skills are needed to uncover a plot that can place power and control into the wrong hands.

Author Mark Hayden continues the magical journey of Conrad Clarke with this, the third book in the KING'S WATCH series. Happily, the stories aren't simple rehashing of story lines that repeat endlessly. They continually grow and introduce more flavor and depth to the world that Hayden continues to build twisting and turning many of the standard fantasy tropes to create new and fun stories. The main characters of Conrad, Vicky, Mina, and others are NOT the same characters that they were at the beginning of the first book. The author takes the events, and the people that drive them, to change and mature his players and that adds so much more to the enjoyment of the book.

Another great part of the continually growing tapestry of the series is that, Hayden keeps the threads he's woven in the previous books and pulls on them throughout each new story allowing readers to revisit and catch up with the characters that made the prior stories such fun.

A little bit of urban fantasy can really hit the spot sometimes. Enough realism, grit and mystery to really suck you in, but enough magic and whimsy to transport you to a different place.

The Eleventh Hour (The 3rd book in King's Watch series) is a wonderfully brilliant urban fantasy story which has a healthy dose of character work, good spot of charm and humor, as well as a good mystery that unravels as the story goes on. What is a good way to kick-start a solid mystery story? Well, a murder of course! Weird things happen a lot, and it's fun to follow as our characters learn things about the case. While a lot of time is spent interrogating suspects, witnesses etc, Mark Hayden really knows when to turn the dial up a little bit and have something action-packed or high-stakes happen.

I have really enjoyed learning more and more about the magic system, which has solid rules, and is actually surprisingly complex. I'm excited to read more in the series and see the characters progress with their abilities and come into their powers. I enjoy the characters a great deal in this book.

2023 bk 173. Another excellent story by Mark Hayden. Instead of a restful weekend, Vicky's talent for seeing the basic dna of any being uncovers a colt whose dna has been altered - and unleashes evil on the Lake Country of England. This part of England is officially not under the care of the King's Watch so in addition to looking out for the bad guys, our duo has to deal with politics. Conrad being Conrad - he finds a way. Well done!

Love it. They get better and better. Real mystery

This is an incredible example of magical world building as well as an excellent and intriguing murder mystery with an amazing and flawed pair of central protagonists and I can't wait to read the next one. Wish there was an audiobook!

This is the ‘additional’ review I posted for The 13th Witch – but the comments made in this review apply to all the books I have read so far in the series, so I am copy/pasting this for the rest of the books I have read. ;)

I've finished reading the series as far as it goes and I am now waiting eagerly for the next book to be published - sometime around the end of March 2020. I cannot remember the last time I enjoyed an urban fantasy series quite so much, and to the extent that I immediately started reading again, from the start. The writing is deliciously 'British', the characters each have their own distinctive 'voice' and the author uses some subtle and clever ways to change POVs (which doesn't happen very often.) And I LOVE the slight obsession with shrugging!

As the series progresses, the back story becomes clearer, though there are still several mysteries regarding Conrad, and usually that would irritate me. But it doesn't here. It works really well for some reason (and yes, I know Conrad's story is written in a different series, but I hadn't read those)

I also love the way details are dropped into the story with an almost casual air. I expect the author has done a phenomenal amount of research and it shows, but not in massive info-dumps, or great wodges of boring details. There's a comfortable sense that this author isn't going to drop a clanger or write something so stupid that I want to throw my Kindle across the room. Instead I am quietly enjoying learning small details without feeling I am being lectured at!

There are a few niggles about the actual format of the book - changes in scenes/times are not sometimes marked with the usual *** and it can confuse the reader. The chapter titles are a tad too large - maybe because I have my kindle font set at 'large' and although I like the covers, they have a slight 'blurriness' about them – but I think that might be the Kindle?

However, I have read all six books in the series and I am going to start reading them again, tonight. I think that's a good enough recommendation. ;)

Another instalment in the Tales of the King's Watch, my current 'better than popcorn but not too demanding' series, though it has to be said this one was a little darker than it's predecessors though it still provided much needed light relief after a heavy read.

Conrad Clarke becomes more Dresden-ish with each story, though without in any way being a clone of Mr D, he is very much a unique character albeit with a few traits in common.

This instalment is set in my beloved Lake District so there was nice familiarity in the locations, the magical feel of those places being well worked in to the story. The characters are continuing to flesh out and develop, lovely to have a bit more of Mina in this book - and I look forward to more in future stories.

As ever there were many twists and turns within the plot, with the persistent menace of something weird going on gently rising as it has throughout the series, I love the 'feet firmly in reality' aspect of the story and the entertaining twists this produces as you anticipate the reaction of certain groups/characters to the actions of our heroes. Some excellent new characters and another member of the Merlin's Tower Irregulars promises more time spent in The Lake District Peculiar in future tales which is pleasing.

Struggled a bit - but still excellent.

So third book now finished & as ever another superbly written & crafted story which is making me look forward to the fourth book.

However at the start of the last quarter of the book I was finding it a little hard going. There was a lot going on, a ton of names to remember & more than once I was finding it hard going thinking who was that again! Plus I did wonder where the story & investigation was going too.

Yes it sorted itself out beautifully but had me going for a bit so hence four stars instead of five.

Another book has come along from another author I love so started that now - still with four other books on the go - but I’ll be back for the fourth book in this series when I’m done!

Certainly my favourite of the King's Watch series so far. Darker themes and more action as well as more depth added to the relationships between Conrad and Vicky and Conrad and Mina.

At points the interpersonal connections in the setting were a bit forgettable. Conrad remains arrogant but intention seems to be that we treat him as a "magnificent bastard" but for me, not really working.

Ultimately I didn't want to read this book after finishing the previous one and felt I should take a break but I decided to break after this one, however I enjoyed this one so much more so that I have already decided to read the follow up.

I feel like the author now has this character down. So, it's been fun to read these following novels. The support characters are much richer, and the environments are fun. While it has romance, it isn't centered on it, and it is more of a detective/fantasy/mystery with an otherworld twist that's ALMOST believable.

Starting 10 Fold now...and we're off to a great start.

Also, he threads in some of the information that has been set up in the other novels without TOTALLY repeating the whole story again. I appreciate that, but any new reader popping in the middle of the series would also be able to keep up.

Title: The 11th Hour A Conrad Clarke Novel (Kings Watch Book 3)
Author: Mark Hayden @mhaydenauthor

Rating: 4/5

Pages: 268

AmI the only one who doesn't like Mina?? I find she isn't a very nice person... so far.

Otherwise I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved the rapport and books between conrad and Vicky. I enjoyed where the story left and more of the magical (or is it magickal?) World.

I am excited to see where the series leads.

Excellent read.

I enjoyed the challenge of a new detective urban fantasy. The series is more challenging as an American to keep up with the British terms used in the dialogue between the main characters. Interesting characters backstories so far. Use of the glossary is very helpful to keep track of locations. Recommend use of map for each book to indicate geographic locations. Recommend a list of characters for reference as well. I don’t recall these on the referenced website. Lots of fun.

In the third installment of the Kings Watch the story happens too fast; the set up is poor and the whole plot line seems muddled. Mark Hayden stumbled into a darling of a story and rushed to capitalize. At least that is how it seems to this reader. This is a poor installment in the series and one that you could probably even skip and head to the next book in the series without suffering too much disruption to the story arc.

I am glad overall I read this one; but just barely.

On to the fourth book, which is oddly labeled Tenfold

Meh Compared To The 1ST Two In The Series

I did enjoy this one, just not as much as the 1st two. There's a lot of spots that I was completely lost and wondering how they tied into the book, or series, for that matter.

It's definitely not a stand-alone, as there's so much that's tied into the 1st two. I'm hoping the 4th is better, and doesn't have as much running, useless, commentary as this one.

If you're reading this as a series, I do recommend reading this one. So far, from what I've gathered from the author's style of writing, you'd be lost in the 4th.

another enjoyable adventure with the James Bond of Magic

Since Harry Potter arrived on the scene authors have taken magic to new heights.
Mark Hayden has created a world that is both welcoming and interesting as anything I have read. Conrad Clarke, Vicky, Mina, Hannah, and the much missed lord Moley are interesting characters that are familiar but in completely different contexts. Imagine if Robert Ludlum or Ian Fleming wrote stories about witches, Gnomes, and Dwarves, but with the same characters. You don’t have to imagine it, it’s here. Very enjoyable.

Thin

Hayden flexes some creative muscle again and that's interesting. Proliferation of characters and Mythic races, classes, e.g. gnomes, dryads. But where others in the past such as dwarves were introduced in detail and played some large purpose, here those gnomes for example are not fully realized. Part of the issue is the proliferation of orgs and vested interest groups. I'm still unclear how the horse stable at the start set off a series of events that lead to Slavic witches, who aren't truly involved until the last 20 pages. I
don't like Mina.

Excellent

Once again, I love how Conrad tends to fall into some minor happenstance that results in a major reorganizing of the magickal order of things. Is it just me, or does it seem that Conrad's Lux is getting stronger? I'm not sure if he would have even been affected by the Undercroft before this book.

I'm eagerly anticipating the next book, where we will finally get some insight into Thomas and what he did.

The stories of Contrad continues. For me the story became a bit flat and less interesting, surprisingly inversely proportional to the increasing number of deaths and murders in this novel.
Also the horse crime investigation bizarrely turned into a decade long vendetta between Lithuanian and Finnish witches.
Anyway the world of Conrad Clarke does worth another try so keep on reading, lets hope its get better.

Mark Hayden is curently my favourite author. I've read the first three books in this series in the last four days. I think they are superb. Conrad is no superhero, he and Vicky have weaknesses and are vulnerable, they do not take themselves too seriously - nor does the author. The stories are well put together, the solutions are logical and the English is pretty good.
What more could a reader want?

The last one of these I will read. So convoluted, the whole last scene I kept having to remind myself who anyone even was. Like the Lithuanian witches were mad because Vicky killed someone why? And that person was actually bad why? And this is all important for the ‘particular’ and the King’s Watch relationship…. Why? Just all the reasons for everything felt random and flimsy, and all the new characters were bland and hard to keep track of. Not a good book.

Conrad rocks

I had been looking - without luck - for someone to take up Harry Dresden’s mantle. I had begun to despair when I stumbled upon the first book in this series (The Thirteenth Witch) and am now fully addicted to the King’s Watch. Grab them, read them, devour them. You will not be sorry. I only hope that there will be more than 13...

Murder and magicking

The unlikely duo working out crimes in a world of witches gnomes and magick has hooked me yet again. This is not my usual genre to read but the author has managed to combine normal heart warming relationships that continue to build with the unusual and unexpected world of magick

Love this series!

This is the third book I have read in this series and I love them! Characters are well drawn. The magical aspect is creative and incorporates from a myriad of teachings, it sees. Love Conrad and Vicky's relationship and his unfolding magical education. Fun all the way through.

Never stops

These.books are full of multi-layered mystery and as a bonus this one has a nice traveler's guide to some of the Lake District. The protagonist uses mundane and magical skills but have to.say his greatest skill may be human intuition. Looking forward to the next book

Great fun

Conrad keeps you guessing the entire book - both who did what when but also what’s with the relationship with Vicky? Will her and Mina be BFFs or when Mina gets out (next book??) she will make Conrad get a new partner - was that a hint at the end of this book? Can’t wait to read the next one

Foolishly I read this before number 2 in the series, and was very confused. Hence the 3 stars. I should add a warning that these books do not stand alone! Having said that, they are great books, well written, exciting storylines and enough information about magic (or magick) and ancient British folklore to feed my interests, at least. A great mash-up of modern and ancient thriller.
