Ok, I've officially reread all of Jupiter's Legacy well in time for the show to drop. That may be a first for me! This time around I noticed a to be continued on the last page, and it says that volume 5 will be called Why Do We Love Our Children So Much. <--that's a fucking mouthful of wonky title if you ask me.
But sadly, nobody did.
Anyway. I've said this with every re-read, but I like the new labeling, and the volume I read this time around (digitally from my library) was called Jupiter's Legacy Vol. 4 Netflix Edition.

description

Knowing that there's another volume in the works bumps this up from 3 stars to almost 4. Because the last time around, this really felt like a shit way to end things. However, if it's just a filler volume and there's more coming, it's not too shabby.

2018

A decent conclusion to volume 1, but it felt a bit too rushed to be truly satisfying.

description

I think this would have been better if the whole thing had been longer and more fleshed out.
As it is? Meh.
You get a resolution to the big showdown that had been brewing, but there were several other things that weren't given enough page time. The worst offender was the ridiculously short and disappointing fight between George and Walter. But even the ending itself seemed somewhat phoned in and by the numbers.

description

In a way, it felt like Millar wanted to leave enough threads dangling that he could come back and revisit this world again if he chooses to.
I mean, the alien thing? There are nods towards some conspiracy related to them peppered throughout all 4 books, but nothing comes of any of it.

description

Another thing that annoyed me towards the end was that there seemed to be things going on behind the scenes that the reader wasn't privy to. As in, Millar had all of these characters doing things in his head that he just forgot to write down. Like Brandon and his wife had this whole sham marriage going on, complete with snarky quips, but we never find out how or why they got to that place. And his wife seemed to be kind of close with his uncle, Walter, but (again) were they teaming up against him or...what? Same thing for all of the side characters. I don't think I'm explaining it properly, but there needed to be more somehow.

description

Ok, it sounds like I'm complaining (and I am), but this was still worth reading, even if it didn't have a phenomenal finale. And I do hope this isn't the last we've seen of these characters or this world.

The second volume of this almost innovative series sees a rebellion of 'super criminals' seek to bring down the totalitarian rule of the 'superheroes'. An interesting, and more essentially wonderful drawn take on superhero-ing with a insightful and at times breath taking re-evaluation of how super heroes would really fight! With core themes of 'with great power comes great responsibility' and family it's quite a complete package. For me though, Frank Quitely's art steals the show. A well merited 8.5 out of 12 Four star read.

Frank Quitely is my favourite comic book artist but he doesn’t put out material too often and unfortunately these last few years he’s been tied to that hack Mark Millar with this mediocre Jupiter’s Legacy title so I’ve had to put up with Millar’s rubbish to enjoy Quitely’s work.

Millar’s story is predictably uninspired and unengaging: evil superheroes have taken over the planet - good superheroes gotta stop ‘em. As usual, Millar’s not trying and the flaws are obvious in his rushed script like the ineffective wannabe-emotional father/son scene that falls flat because it’s so underwritten. The rest is instantly forgettable generic superheroes-thumping-each-other crap.

Quitely’s artwork though is resplendent. He does scale like few can and his panels are meticulous, charged with life, imaginatively executed and are simply beautiful to behold. His visionary art is literally the only reason to pick up Jupiter’s Legacy 2.

I liked the concept, a bunch of bored millenial super-heroes take over the government because they think they can do better. However, that was all volume 1. This just felt rushed so Millar could finally finish the story. It's a couple issues of freeing super-villains, then a big battle and it's all hunky-dory. Frank Quitely just gets better and better with each new series he tackles.

Well after years and years of waiting we finally have the followup to Jupiter's Legacy. If you haven't seen my review of that, to sum it up, shit was insane! Like people just getting brutally murdered, assholes being true dicks, and some great shots of awesome fights. So does 2 build upon that? In some ways yes, in others no.

Jupiter's Legacy picks up where the last left off. We get right into the heroes still being dicks but now the villains working together to fight back. Lead by the one guy without any powers and uses his father's tech he begins to hunt down the supes with the team and his wife and son.

Good: The artwork still pretty great. Some of these fights look amazing. Especially one shot of someone going through ground levels of buildings and underground. Amazing shot. Also liked the father son relationship here and the meaning behind it. Was also nice to see the heroes (well villains but heroes in our eyes) get their shit together instead of feeling like they'll never win a single fight.

Bad: It feels rushed at times. The reunion feels cut short with a certain someone and their father. The end result feels like they just threw everyone together at one place and a death really felt like "nothing" when it happened. Also what the hell was up with building up some big fight to let it down like that?

Overall Jupiter's Legacy volume 2 is still highly entertaining with insane art moments but as a total package it falls short of the first title. I still say it's good and probably closer to a 3.5 than a 3 but I'ma settle on a 3 in the end!

The books are so much better than the series, that I am becoming steadily more angry about it. Yes, sometimes books just . . . fail . . . to translate to the screen. We've all seen the crap 1980's Dune. But in the last couple of years some truly amazing movie and TV adaptations are happening, and this one had a huge budget and the whole thing just seems like there was some bizarre disconnect somewhere. What makes it even weirder is that the book is almost like an outline. It's all very fast. Fight scenes last only a page, if that. It would be super easy, I think, to turn it into a script. But no. They failed hard.

So, don't watch the series. Read this instead.

This is third rate writing.
--All the supervillains in the world decide to be heroes ; not one has trouble adjusting and the public has no problem accepting their change of heart.
--Every hero in the world enthusiastically tries to murder the 10yo boy protagonist and his parents. No doubts, no guilt, no realistic emotions of any kind.
--The characters say exactly what they're thinking and explain their actions as if the reader is a moron. "Thanks for allowing me to ride an electron past the security measures, fool!" or "That was just an illusion to distract you while I get the upper hand!"
--I'm preeetty sure you can't have a casual conversation on the surface of Mars. What with the virtually nonexistent atmosphere and all.
--New superpowers keep getting tossed in for convenience. With three pages left in the series the psychic guy starts setting people on fire, the tech wizard suddenly has telekinesis, etc.
--Inconsistent power. One hero's strength is literally tectonic but later he can't even break the grip of a security drone. Because lazy plot convenience.

Even the politics are puzzling. Barack Obama is responsible for the partisan breakdown of America, but President Elizabeth Warren is the savior the country needs? Then there's this triumphant gem of simpleness: "Dictatorships never last, because no single person knows better than THE PEOPLE." THAT'S why dictators fall? Also, the line was obviously written before 2016...

After all this substandard writing, the justification for superhero costumes was surprisingly believable: it's hard to kick people while wearing blue jeans and you need to know at a glance who you're punching.

Three stars just because I love the idea of arrogant supes unilaterally seizing power and then fucking everything up.

Why a higher rating than the previous three volumes in Millar's Jupiter work? Is it the story, no not really. Is it the art, no it is good but not jaw dropping great. It's George and Jason, and to a smaller degree Chole and Hutch.

I liked these characters. Millar's strength is not three dimensional characterization, but damn the notes these characters are supposed to hit, well they hit those notes well.

Choe has grown up from a drug abusing, bit of an airhead, to a woman who finally decides to take on her power hungry, megalomaniacal uncle, and her easily led stupid brother Brandon. Hutch, well I don't think he was always the reformed villain, reluctant hero type. I think deep down, bastard though he is (aka Jon Snow time) Hutch loved his father and wanted to be like the misunderstood and misguided Skyfox.

George, aka Skyfox, comes back into the story and yes he doesn't want to be dragged back. But, in his heart he knows it was wrong for Walter and Brandon to use supers to take over the United States and start screwing up the world too.

And, Jason. Chole and Hutch's son grows up on stories on his grandparents and he he totally takes on their ideals, and then some. The scary thing is Jason just might be the most powerful metahuman to ever walk the planet.

Yes, Millar is taking from tons of sources and archetypes (Squadron Supreme, Watchmen, DC's trinity of heroes, etc.) , but he is doing it well here.

Brandon, and his family do square off, and so do George and Walter.

Now we all have to wait until 2019 for the next chapter.

I love how the characters use their powers in this comic. They truly go all out in a fight. Even though the powers themselves may not be unique, the way the are employed gives a run for their money for even the best superhero comics. The political setting is overly-simplified by the end, but it's a fine way to return to the traditional way of life.

Chloe is doing a good job of gathering superpowered allies, even though Walter and Brandon are working on imprisoning as many of them as possible. Brandon isn't handling the pressure too well when he goes against his uncle Walter's guidance and takes control of China. Chloe decides to act, which leads to the big fight that we've been waiting for.

An excellent conclusion (although there seems to be a fifth volume in the works) that embraces the chasm between two generations of heroes to offer an impactful denouement. This volume also contains a lot of setup to the grand finale but it gets quite intense and deadly quick. Having read the prequel first, it was interesting to read the bits about the Golden Age heroes' past and what drove some to put an end to their relationship with one another.

Bullet Review:

Rereading Volume 1, I was swept away by the sheer epic proportion of the series, the dark turn it takes. FINALLY after all this time, getting my hands on Volume 2, my thoughts at the end veer more to "MEH". This certainly isn't bad, but it's over way too quickly and wrapped up way too neatly. They tease a Jupiter's Requiem - but where the frak can it go now?

A decent read, but not quite fulfilling/satisfying. Oh well, can't win them all.

The final war is here! As we have Chloe and Hutch and Jason band the supervillains together to fight against Brandon and walter, we also meet the original Skyfox and his story of what happened to him after is heartbreaking and then we have the final fight between the two parties and its amazing, bloody, emotional, revenge taken and price paid and return to the status quo, legacies taken up and a new-albeit-old world order restored and stressing what heroes are actually meant to be and a cliffhanger in the end. It was an amazing book and just has so many thought provoking moments and the art is gorgeous, though the fight was short lived. This whole thing is a critique on superheroes in a way and is fun. I liked this one a lot! Can't wait for Jupiter Requiem next!

"It's fun isn't it? Costumes under our clothes. Getting changed in closets the second we hear police sirens.
You can see why mom and dad were always happy and fullfilled.
Is this what our lives were missing before? Being usefull to other people?
It's the secret of the universe, sweetheart...Why else would we be here?"

Great ending to this arc, I felt it lacked a little punch, but there was some real sweet revenge moments. Mark Miller is one of the bests...

Jupiter's Legacy Vol. 2 or Jupiter's Legacy Vol. 4 Netflix Edition concludes the story that started in the first volume with Chloe and Brandon.

Mark Millar did a really good job in expanding George's (Skyfox) and Walter's (Brainwave) characters and relationship in Jupiter's Circle so the conclusion to their story here feels a long time coming and makes you care a lot.

I am satisfied with this ending as it ties a lot of stuff but the only problem here is that it feels a bit short and rushed. If only this had one or two more volumes to flesh out ideas that seem to be there it would have been perfect.

Frank Quitely's work here is once again astonishing and I really love how he draws action scenes.

In the end I can say I liked a lot of the characters in this series and I enjoyed how they feel real. I would love to read more with them.

There's also a sequel series to this called Jupiter's Requiem following Chloe's and Hutch's adult son and I hope it's as good.

Definitely recommended.

Note: charecter assumes that his super-intelligence alone makes him best-suited to turn the economy around, but Sheldon tells him that he doesn't really have the expertise to do so.... Like seeing a tech bro who thinks they know how physics works.
It's interesting to see someone play superintelligence as it would actually unfold.

The final battles are worth every page until you get to them.

This time adding more drama to the most dysfunctional family of the planet and telling of their journey to try to save the world, each with their own point of view.
The comic took it's time making a dramatic story but also had one of the best and imaginative super-hero fighting I've ever seen.

A really good entry on the Millar-verse

Would rate: "How a caring father can make a lot of difference"/10

Almost forgot this was out there. I was really engrossed by the first volume in this series, but then sort of lost track of this one. Finally had a chance to read it. This is a really good follow-up to the first volume, which saw superheroes take over the governments of the world (shades of The Authority) because, obviously, they know better how to run things and create a utopia. Right? Not quite. Things get pretty bad and here we see some of the children of the original superheroes, combined with a number of supervillains, all team up and save the world (things have to be better the second time around, don't they?). This collection is filled with some of Frank Quitely's best artwork and, frankly, some of Mark Millar's best writing. Though the concept isn't the most original, this two-volume story ranks near the top of all the "MillarWorld" stuff I've read. Really satisfying.

The saga of Jupiter's Legacy continues on a well written path with volume four, but there's no escaping that it feels as though there's a slight falling back in quality compared to the previous volume.

The social commentary that really gave this series its extra magic has firmly now fallen by the wayside at this point, which is a real shame for the series. It feels like the tone has shifted into something else - still good, but now different from what it was - and it's absence is noticeable.

The characterisation is still pretty phenomenal here though and continues to keep the reader invested. The plot idea that sees the good guys being the new bad guys and vice versa isn't a unique one for comics, but it does play out very well.

Frank Quietly's art is more of the same from the previous volume. No doubt some will have issues with facial expressions again, but I quite like the tone it brings.

Overall, Jupiter's Legacy feels like it's still going strong at this point, however, the social commentary is sorely missed after what has come before.

Ok, so this series has been more up and down than a crack addict on a roller coaster, although if it gives us arcs like this, than I can almost, almost forgive some of the unfortunate dreck that came beforehand. After my little rant about probably not bothering with volume four after the mess of volume three, I almost didn't bother opening this one before returning it to the library, but I did. The apathy and cynicism was flowing through me at a rate of knots, almost goading myself into disliking this, but I didn't. I'm rather proud of myself to be honest. A personal growth moment. character levelling up in progress. The only question remains, why oh why couldn't it have all been this good?
Frank Quitely's art was good in the last volume, but it is the absolute star here. The inker and colourist deserve credit too, but Mr. Quitely just went and became one of my favourite artists within a small span of issues. His finely detailed linework allows for a sense of scale like no other, and how he takes Millar's concise and simple dialogue and tells the story treble fold within his panels is a thing of beauty. I'm doing the chef's kiss thing now as I write.
Though Millar delivered here too. His social commentary is extremely toned down. Those thoroughly unlikeable characters going and becoming altogether more enjoyable in my eyes. Even down right decent at times. The smaller themes I enjoyed in the previous volumes returned, and the super hero antics, when delivered in Mr. Quitely's unique and outstanding way, are now a highlight, rather than a forgettable blot spread across a story. This book featured some of the most memorable, most 'page turn pausingly, eye lingeringly' I've had in god knows how long. It wasn't perfect, but it's been a long time since a super hero story impressed me like this. And coming on the hells of the crapfest that was volume three. Well, that's bloody impressive. I'm not sure how volume five can top this, but I guess I'm going to have to find out. 4.5/5

Chloe, Hutch and Jason are on a quest- to find or rescue so-called former villains, who are actually good compared to the super-powered “heroes” in charge now. This book moves fast through the adventures of assembling a team and Hutch finding an additional surprising ally. Brandon and Walter continue their evil ways, and finally, it's showdown time. Chloe comes face to face with her brother and exacts revenge in regards to what he did to their parents.

This story arc was rushed, there were threads in the narrative that were left hanging and some character’s powers were either too much or too little with no consistency. There were some interesting aspects of the story that could have been expanded such as the alien connection, but a feel-good bow was added to the conclusion to wrap up everything. However, I was a fan of how Chloe, Hutch and Jason all picked up the mantles of family members they wanted to honor, and are planning a better future for themselves and the world.

The art remained a strength- I enjoyed all the varied costumes and some interesting backgrounds were drawn in. The cat and unicorn panel was a stand-out in the story, it was unexpected and fun. Plus, I liked the ongoing joke that simply wearing glasses was an adequate disguise (hello Clark Kent!).

This two-volume series definitely has me interested in following the Netflix series. In fact, I picked up the prequels, Jupiter’s Circle, and look forward to the sequel Jupiter’s Requiem coming out soon.

Incredible art by Frank Quitely who excels in uses of space and fight scenes--just wow.

However, story-wise, it's not as good as the first volume since the end feels rushed and the characters don't get character development they need to be compelling. We never get to learn more about how the 'evil' superheroes actually rule over the world and what kind of laws they had implemented, since in the first volume, it was all about governing better than the 'regular' government.

However, it wasn't a disappointment because it's still a good take on superheroes taking over while Frank's art knocks it out of the mega-park.

----------------

Second volume of this series that will be 3 in total, which continues right where the previous one ended. And it continues in the same line, the story has a devilish rhythm, sometimes too much, and the characters also continue in their lines.

The art unfortunately still seems to me the worst, without being bad, of the work. A lot of dirty lines, which are sometimes compensated by certain spectacular vignettes.

A big but that I put is the issue of powers, new ones are coming out of necessity from the script.

I really want to see how this ends, although the closing here is quite good if you do not want to continue.
