Motor Learning and Performance With Web Study Guide - 4th Edition: A Situation-Based Learning Approach

Rate this book
Motor Learning and Performance: A Problem-Based Learning Approach helps readers discover how humans master skilled movements. Refining the conceptual model of human performance developed in the popular first edition, it also includes opportunities to "learn by doing." Students are shown how to apply the principles of motor learning and performance in a variety of contexts, including teaching, coaching, rehabilitation, and ergonomics (human factors engineering).

Authors Richard Schmidt and Craig Wrisberg immerse students in the material by presenting real-life problems throughout the book. They show students how to ask the right questions, draw upon relevant principles and research findings, and then devise strategies that address the problem. Often the strategy varies depending on such factors as

the characteristics and goals of the learner, the task to be learned, and the conditions under which the movement task must eventually be performed. This problem-based learning approach challenges students to develop the ability to think critically, helping them not only to understand the process of skill performance, but also to gain the ability to select, assimilate, and apply the concepts and principles covered in the book to real-world settings. Once students have a solid grasp of the fundamental principles and research findings for motor performance and learning and have developed some effective problem-solving strategies, they will be able to help individuals learn or relearn nearly any motor skill.

Beautiful in its pedagogy. As theory, it extracts all the relevant studies in the field. It is well-organized with headings, subheadings, fonts to aid the reader in appreciating experimental design and complications. As practice, it gives many governing principles for the coach/educator to use. The vignettes and learning objectives clearly laid out is a serious help.

Highly recommended for a primer on designing technical sessions for sportspeople.

I read the sixth edition for my motor learning class! I enjoyed gaining some knowledge on the complexity of motor skills. It’s a very well structured book.
