Detective Dani DeMarco is back—and not by choice. When a powerful witch goes missing from NYPD, Dani is dragged out of retirement to assist her sometimes boyfriend, sometimes boss—Captain Matthew King—in locating the detective before it’s too late. But things are never that easy, and Dani is soon faced with three bodies missing from the morgue, two reports of necromancy that rock the borough, and a new strain of illegal magic wreaking havoc across Wicked. Dani doesn’t know who to trust. The medical examiner is lying. A detective is reverting to dangerous habits. A rich lawyer is wrapped up in a gruesome murder-suicide. In addition to the job, Dani’s forced to balance a potential new suitor with her complicated feelings for Matthew, while demons from her past threaten to destroy the future. When the case begins to crumble from the inside out, Dani must re-examine those she loves most...and risk losing everything in the name of justice.

The Hex Files : Wicked Long Nights by Gina LaManna and narrated by Allyson Ryan is a real my awesome world with supernatural creatures of all kind. Our main character is a witch that works part time for a special unit of the police force. There is some smoking hot characters, some evil ones that are causing bodies to disappear from the morgue, and more. The is magic, curses, action, travel by broomstick (YES!), and romance. I definitely enjoyed it. Great narration!
I tried another book to see if it got better…. It didn’t My review for book one stands for the second.
I read Hex on the beach series and loved it. This is a poor man’s spinoff. It’s horrible. The h is a overly complex negative Nelly The H is whiny and wish washy In fact both these characters are wish washy!
The H is a vampire that’s hundreds of years old. He knows the h is his ONE TRUE MATE the moment he meets her and he breaks up w her and watches her be w OP!? WTF!? No way
The h is just a sad sap….. period
The author focuses on the fact that these two love each other so much but for EVERY reason out there can’t be together yet not one reason is valid or makes sense. I also don’t like that they worked together for 10 yrs but and the H knew from the moment he met her that she was is one true mate but didn’t pursue her. They were together for only 2 years then HE broke it off. And then he watched her be w OM. So dumb
The mystery was BORING. None of these characters are very memorable and only maybe one is likable.
I would like to say that in cases of ONE TRUE MATE you don’t mess with them being w OP after meeting. I’m sure the 6-8 years before they got together they were not celibate. And def not after.
Ah..what's a gal to do...the vampire or the werewolf??? that centuries old dilema of a love triangle.
at least, there was some explanation of Dani's past as well as the inanimate objects in her apt.
to be honest, i'm not a big fan of story points which are drawn out over several books. (ie. the missing Lucia...her obsession w/the hex files...etc..) so on that point, i'm not a fan. but this writer creates great characters and on audio, the story is very entertaining.
overall, it's ok and i'll keep on w/the series as i like the characters and am invested in what happens to them.
Another action packed installment of the Mysteries from the Sixth Borough series. More answers and more questions as we follow Dani & Matthew’s hunt for Lucia. Looking forward to more adventures!
I think I'm loving this series even more than the Magic and Mixology !! Dani and Matthew have a great chemistry and Gina writes them so well. Each book leads very nicely into the next. (Thankfully I have all four so I can just keep going! LOL)
The mystery is still fascinating, the narration is still amazing. I still love the characters. Any one of these things may not be great, but the blend together perfectly. Highly recommend the audio of this series. The mystery here is probably my favorite of the series.
DNF. I MIGHT finish at some point if I’m extremely bored and can find nothing else to do, but I feel no need at all to see what happens... and I ALWAYS want to know what happens.
It’s all pretty basic and boring. Absolutely EVERYTHING that the character miraculously stumbles over is connected to the (boring) main plot line. Every person. Every comment. Every idea. Every snail... well, maybe not every snail. But you get the picture. There’s not even a hint of subtle anywhere. The lead miraculously makes connections between supposedly unconnected things.
Still, like the first book, I feel like I’ve missed a previous book that explains all the add ins that are sprinkled thru with little explanation. The ex, the hex files, the brothers. The world in general. And in general, the low tech due to magic interference works bugs me.
Then there’s the angst and miscommunication bullshit. Granted, I’m impressed that the centuries old vamp isn’t actually acting like a teenager, but he, like everyone else still find themselves gasping for explanations to miscommunications and in the 100 words they do manage to babble out each time this happens, not one of them can say the 3-5 words that say/prove it’s a miscommunication and have a (small) chance of stopping the other irrational party from steamrolling thru and cementing the f’up, because their feelings are hurt and they’is just protecting them little selves before the other person can tell they’is not a grown up.
I don’t think I can really say I actually like any of the characters (including the supports and random drive thru characters), but Grey is probably the closest. I really dislike Willa. Her perky naive crap grates on me. I find myself praying she’s evil incarnate. All the leads family, everyone she works with, all the support characters... just more blah.
Do I like anything about this book? Well, yes I do. Grey’s home is awesome. The home, the garden, the peace... now that I could read a whole series about.
Wow! Get ready for an amazing roller coaster ride! The first book of the series is a stage setter leaving us with a couple of questions. This second book in the series attacks the questions and if you are ready to get on the train, you won't be able to get off until the end! You have magic, paranormal, great characters, romance, self-doubt, family dynamics, murder, missing bodies and the missing Reserve Officer, Lucia that both main characters, Dani, the retired Reserve Officer and Matthew, (Captain King-the vamp)are investigating. Did Lucia run away or is it more than that? There is so much involved in trying to solve the mysteries in this book and to see if somehow in this crazy 6th borough of NYC they come together you just can't put this book down! Not only is Lucia missing, but so are 3 bodies from the morgue and there is a dangerous herb on the market that could be killing people and there is also people thinking they are seeing dead people, even though necromancy is illegal in the borough. Since Dani felt responsible for the missing new Reserve Officer, Lucia whom she trained, she comes out of retirement to help the Captain find out what happened to her. Having a past relationship with the Captain and not over her feelings makes this case even harder together with the fact that the Captain can't get over their breakup either. You are totally surprised at the ending and never guess who the person responsible for so much is! And what about Lucia? And why is Matthew so afraid to have Dani go into the Hex Files? What significance do they have? This is a must read series I received and ARC from the author but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
This book (and series) has a good mixture of components. There is of course, the paranormal/supernatural (witches and sorcerers and the like) aspect. There is some romance. There is also a good and complex mystery. It's not a comedy, but there is some humor in it (mostly coming from the characters sarcastic snark.) This is book two in the series. The mystery is new (though it partially starts in book one,) but there are some bits that carry through between the books. I wouldn't say you need to read book one first, but you'll have more insight if you do. There is a little more emotion in this one.. in the romance department and in the internal battles the Protagonist has going on. Donn't worry you won't need a Kleenex. The characters, while all have some form of Supernaturalness about them, they are also real. They are complex and well rounded, and each unique. As for the crimes, there is magic but at the same time it all feels like 'the real world.' The central crime in this book is about drugs (both selling and using) and deaths as a result of it. It starts as Dani (the heroine) continues her investigation into the missing officer (which actually takes place in book one.) We see a little more of Grey (who was a suspect in book one,) and the start of the friendship between him and Dani. It's a well thought out story with many different avenues to follow. There are some thriller aspects of it as well. It is a clean read, (sex is only alluded to.) Safe for teens and up.
Dani couldn’t go back to the pizza place to live her “quiet” life and instead got pulled in to solve her friend/backfill hire’s potential kidnapping. Of course, things don’t end up going according to plan and now she’s allllll the way back into the precinct’s drama.
Putting aside that Dani is working with her ex and they still love each other, she’s determined to prove that her replacement was kidnapped and that she didn’t just disappear. Unfortunately, it seems like nobody wants to believe that. While digging into that case, she ends up sucked into a case that ends with 3 disappearing bodies and a lot of drugs.
I gotta say, I was caught off guard by the whodunnit in this one, and was along for this wild ride right next to Dani here. Could she have gone about her detective work without being so paranoid and aggressive? Sure. But I guess that’s who Dani is, so I’m here for it all. I’m also here for the sizzle between her and “Captain King.” I am distinctly NOT here for the forced vampire, werewolf, love triangle I can see coming from a mile away. Here’s hoping that never materializes.
The second book of The Hex Files: Wicked Long Nights, deals with a new Herbal medicine on the market, missing bodies from the morgue, Dani's missing replacement in the police force, unexplained death, and more! In other words, the book is jammed packed with excitement and witchcraft.
This book focused more on Dani and Matthew (Captain King, a.k.a. the Vamp), working the extremely confusing mystery of the missing Reserve/police officer as well as trying to find the source for the new Herbals on the market. The author has once again integrated her readers in the life of Dani and her friends to the point that you feel like you are actually going with her from place to place. The result for me was I could barely put the book down late into the night to stop and sleep!
Once again, the author has written a fabulous book that exceeds anyone's hopes. I love the undercurrent mysteries she includes in each book and how slowly more details are being revealed to us. I can't recommend this series enough-just be sure to read the books in order so the details all add up for you!
Fortunately, there were only 2 weeks between book 1 and 2 so I could dive right in.
I think this is my new favorite series by Gina LaManna (but I always say this when she starts a new one), and I really enjoy the dynamics of Dani and her ex-boyfriend Captain Matthew King. It is clear they both love each other but Dani first has to get her feelings in order. Their break-up caused so much hurt she wants to shield herself.
Favorite quotes of Matthew:
"I would never give the life of a vampire up if it means more time with her. When her time - our time together - comes to an end, that will be all for me, as well. I have nothing left on earth to live for after such things."
"I was supposed to meet Danielle. She makes me .. she is the person I've been born to meet. The person I've been waiting to love my entire life. "
Yes, Matthew is an eternal vampire. That is the only issue I have with the story. I makes my heart ache because Dani is mortal and he is a vampire. But on the other hand: I LOVE THESE TWO!
Fabulous. She still doesn't believe that her replacement has resigned and noel she's been given the all clear to look into the matter. However things start getting murky when people start dying from now obvious reason. Their bodies disappearing. Whilst the sale of herbal remedies goes through the roof. Not only that but the two main men in her life are complicating her personal life. Whilst family is adding yet another distraction. Can she find the common link between the deaths and the disappearance? Will she find the real cause of the deaths? How will she sort out the men and family issues she has? A brilliant plot that will keep you hopping. Had me going for the right environment but the wrong person. The characters just get better and better. Plus the book ends with a great new cliffhanger - is this all due to The Hex Files?
Wicked Long Nights is the second book in this series and it's absolutely thrilling. This book will have you laughing, holding your breath and filling your heart with hope for all the characters. Lots of OMG moments.
Dani and Matthew have there hands full trying to figure out why healthy citizens in Wicked are turning up dead. Also what their relationship is. I really hope these two will figure out how to be a couple. 💜💏 Grey's back which causes major issues. Don't trust him! Hopefully Dani will listen to Willa.
Lots of character development in this book. Loved the family dinner scene. Freaking hilarious! Wait til you read the ending. Holy moly!
I've already preordered the next book and you will to after reading this. Gina LaManna is a fabulous author. I recommend you read this series in order. You truly don't want to miss anything.🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
An interesting story with lots of subplots and twists. The mystery was well written but I was getting a bit tired of Dani whining about the problems of her current love life and past love life or lack of. Her saying she was retired but the marching forward doing what she used to do was over done as well. There were surprises to the story but the good changes occurring are great! People should have good outlooks on life whenever they can. Hopefully Dani will be having a better outlook of her life and move on. Michael should try harder or else move on himself and forget the whole mate concept. Grey is an interesting character and it would be nice to see more of him and learn exactly what kind of person he is. I hope you enjoy r adding the book for its mystery content and realize that not everyone will see things as I do. It is an excellent mystery!
If Ed Wood Jr wrote a book, it would be a lot like this. With all the hallmarks of a Z movie - stilted dialogue; inane, pointless plot; shallow character development (no character development); awkward character interactions; horrible acting - this felt like someone actually took the time to novelize a Poverty Row production. And much like C or Z movies I just could not look away and actually made it to the end, wondering half the time if the (lack of) quality was intentional. And much like those sloppy, haphazard movies I felt almost empty at the end. This series ends here as far as my readership, unless someone decides to undertake the daunting task of making these into some literary version of MST3K. In fact, that would be fabulous. Someone please do that. Then I'll happily read the rest of the series without the disappointment.
This is a great book; this is the second book in the Mysteries from the Sixth Borough series written by Gina LaManna. I really enjoy reading this series and the books just keep getting better. Dani DeMarco is pulled out of retirement again when her friend and powerful witch goes missing. Dani and her sometimes boyfriend Captain Matthew King must work together to find out what is happening and to save Lucia before it’s too late. This book has it all romance, humor and mystery along with supernaturals. This is a great book with a wonderful story and well developed characters. This book will keep you reading long into the night. If you are looking for a great book with humor and mystery, then you need to read this book. I am looking forward to reading the next book by this great author.
I just couldn’t put it down, even when I was yelling at Mathew for being an idiot I still couldn’t stop reading, this series is highly addictive, the characters are just awesome and you never want the story to end.
Danni DeMarco is such an amazing character, I love her strength, her insecurities and even her fears and doubts all of this make her feel real in a supernatural setting and I just love that, readers can identify with her while escaping into a fantasy world for a while, that makes for a wonderful book for me.
I laughed, I cried, I got very mad and then at the end I sighed and smiled, I really love a book that makes me feel so many emotions in one awesome read.
With no evidence of what killed them. And then the bodies disappeared from the morgue. Dani finds residuals on Sienna, the medical examiner, and thinks she’s lying about the missing bodies. Lucia, the replacement Reserve, is still missing, and Dani thinks her disappearance is somehow connected to the disappearing corpses. Then there is the new drug that is on the market, Harmony. That is somehow attached to herbals, items people are using because that are natural and not drug related.
Dani, Matthew, Grey, and Willa return along with other members of the DiMarco family, and Willa’s mother to make for an exciting addition to the series.
I really liked this book and thought it definitely offered more insight into the characters than the first (i.e. Dani's past). Definitely solid story line and easy to follow intents. I still have the criticism of how the main love interests are portrayed as being totally incapable of self control and a sense of "she's mine and only mine" which we see in a lot of alpha male books. Is LaManna veering too far into cliche'd territory? Let's read book 3 and find out. Hopefully by then we might get a bit more insight as to what exactly the Hex Files are instead of being left with 1 page post scripts...
Probably 2 1/2. I liked this a little less than the first book. I'm not sure why.
It was a good mystery. Dani has to rely on her detective skills when her talent doesn't seem to help produce any clues in a series of mysterious deaths. But she also has to deal with the fall out of accusing one of her colleagues of being involved. The book goes much deeper into the police department politics as well as the relationships there, and not just romantic relationships.
Matthew and Dani's relationship continues to be up and down and shows the real impediments of being involved with someone you also work with, even if you are not reporting to them. Some of the more ugly side of policing is also seen into this book.
This series is a lot more complex than just a mystery to solve. It has problems that common people can relate to just set in an unique place.
This book picks up right where the first one left off, but with a whole new case for our favorite detective and captain. The characters are as well flushed-out as ever, and the mystery really kept me going until the final reveal. I love Dani’s determination to be independent and strong, but as a personal preference I have never been a big fan of the “I love you but I’m just not ready to be with you right now” trope so if that really is a big turn-off for you then you might not like this one so much. All in all I would say this is a solid second installment to this series.
Resolves the cliffhanger that the second book ends on. Still enjoying the series, but..... When I downloaded Books 1-3 as a bundle from Hoopla, I thought I was starting a trilogy. Much later, I discovered that THERE ARE A TOTAL OF SEVEN BOOKS. Apparently Book 7 is the conclusion. Will I keep going after Book 3? Undecided.
I didn't like that this book was hinting at a potential love triangle with a vampire and a not-really werewolf shapeshifter. Way too Twilight for me. Also.... WHY does the author have to use "step foot" instead of "set foot"? Pulls me right out of the narrative.
I just finished this book and am already anticipating the next one! GL keeps pulling me into the world of the Isle, Magic Inc, and now Wicked and I couldn’t be happier. The character development continues as our favorites from book 1 continue to fight for justice in Wicked and this story does not disappoint! I am happily awaiting the next releases in all of GL’s series’s... so, if you are on the fence about any of this author’s work, take the plunge, it is Wicked good!
Let me start off by saying I despise romance novels, I just do. They are not my slice of pizza. I do, however, enjoy urban fantasy, a whole friggin lot! I really enjoy this world Gina has created. This overall was a very good story, except for Dani's constant assumptions. The very ending of this book made it worth Dani's annoying assuming throughout the whole book, in fact, it made me outright GIDDY. Who is after her?! What are the hex files?! Cannot wait for book number 3!!!
There's not a single Gina LaManna book I haven't read, and I truly adore each series. But The Hex Files is really something extra special. It's a little grittier than her other work, and the story line grabs you and won't let you go until you finish! (Well, not even then- I can't wait for the next one! ) Don't hesitate to start this series if you haven't yet. And if you read the first, let me assure you that this one packs an even bigger punch than the first one did!
I received this ARC for a review. This review is my honest opinion of the book. This is the second book I have read of Gina's. I love paranormal and this delivers. Always liked the vampire angle. The two main characters, Matthew and Dani, have history and that shows throughout the book. Lucia is missing as are bodies from the morgue and they are back to finding out why. The writing is easy, flows quickly. I enjoyed this book and will definitely try her other series. There are many books on the market about paranormal, but I never tire of them.
Dani is still a Special Consultant, Lucia is still gone, but Dani doesn't believe she retired, she thinks she's been kidnapped. But she doesn't know why. Digging into the case, she finds out what Lucia was working on, she can't see how any of them would get her in trouble. Then, a couple of bodies go missing from the morgue, there's a new drug on the street that's addicting, then killing people and things start meshing. Now, Dani is kidnapped, and tossed in with Lucia. Things is about to get ugly.
