"How he got started in comics: In 1983, when Fraction was 7 years old and growing up in Kansas City, Mo., he became fascinated by the U.S. invasion of Grenada and created his own newspaper to explain the event. "I've always been story-driven, telling stories with pictures and words," he said.

Education and first job: Fraction never graduated from college. He stopped half a semester short of an art degree at Kansas City Art Institute in Missouri in 1998 to take a job as a Web designer and managing editor of a magazine about Internet culture.

"My mother was not happy about that," he said.

But that gig led Fraction and his co-workers to split off and launch MK12, a boutique graphic design and production firm in Kansas City that created the opening credits for the James Bond film "Quantum of Solace."

Big break: While writing and directing live-action shoots at MK12, Fraction spent his spare time writing comics and pitching his books each year to publishers at Comic-Con. Two books sold: "The Last of the Independents," published in 2003 by AiT/Planet Lar, and "Casanova," published in 2006 by Image Comics.

Fraction traveled extensively on commercial shoots. Then his wife got pregnant. So Fraction did what any rational man in his position would do -- he quit his job at MK12 to pursue his dream of becoming a full-time comic book writer.

Say what? "It was terrifying," said Fraction, who now lives in Portland, Ore. "I was married. We had a house. We had a baby coming. And I just quit my job."

Marvel hired Fraction in June 2006, thanks largely to the success of his other two comics. "I got very lucky," he half-joked. "If it hadn't worked out, I would have had to move back in with my parents.

I'm glad I finished Sex Criminals.
I didn't like it, but whatever.

description

As much as I love dick jokes and crude humor, this wasn't a story for someone like me. I think it's geared towards people who maybe have depression or live in their heads a lot. That's not a slam on anyone who loves the book, I'm just saying I didn't connect with anything going on in it.
The weird time-travel stuff just...what? Where was any of that coming from? Everything about it felt like they hadn't figured out how to end the book and were just winging it.

description

And the ending was just depressing.
It felt like they threw that last bit in there so this would seem bittersweet, but it just ruined what little enjoyment I could have gotten out of finally finishing this title.

description

I'm positive this book has an audience, but I'm not it.
2 stars because I did really like the art.

This book. This fucking book. I was never going to be prepared for it to end.

And I mean it when I say this was the perfect ending for one of the best comics of all time. It taught me a lot, it made me laugh, it damn near made me cry, and it made me feel less alone and more at peace with myself and with the world. And that’s not to mention Letter Daddies, the absolute best letter column of all time, which made me go through a roller coaster of emotions every time all on its own. I will always miss this book, and I will never not want to read it again.

Goodbye, Sex Criminals. And a huge thank you to Matt, Chip and everyone else who made it happen.

The first book was a wild and funny sex romp. This finale is the damp and stained sheets that need to be stripped off the bed while your mind churns with the lingering regret of, "What did we do?"

So it comes to a end. I remember reading this like 10 years ago now haha.

So I'm just going to cut out most of what it is about because it's major spoilers. Just know it has a lot to do with time travel, why they have this power, and what happens after it is gone. That's the majority of this book. The last issue is kind of the final cap on it all as it jumps ahead years and we see all our characters and where they are in life.

And see, the last issue is actually really solid. Made me laugh, made me smile, and the ending felt perfect. But the actual plot, the bad guy, the overuse of sexual things to put funny situations but weren't that funny is there. I mean there's still al ot of funny parts, but the whole evil guy who don't give a fuck, is boring here.

But overall the series ends solid enough. Nothing compared to its first 3 volumes but I enjoyed it none the less. A 3 out of 5.

"Billy Pilgrim has come unstuck in time."

Oh wait, that's something else. Let me try again. "Suze has come unstuck in time." That's better.

Sex criminals started in volume 1 with people who could stop time when orgasming, and rob banks and poop in plants while the world is frozen. Round about volume 3 it veered into something different and weird. I never liked it as much after that. But the love story at the core is very touching, realistic and mature, despite the craziness all around it.

I can’t believe it’s over. This was one of my first forays into indie comics, which is fucking hilarious cause who tf decides to pick up a comic book called Sex Criminals as a beginner comic? Apparently I do. I will forever be grateful to Matt and Chip for writing this masterpiece. In between all of the dick jokes and sex puns that are literally everywhere, even in the fine details like fake movie and book titles, they gave me one of the realest relationships I have had the pleasure of reading.

Jon and Suzie are like nothing else. I love them so much. I love how much they love each other. The lengths they went to for one another. What they did when they were together and apart. It’s hard to explain, but they’re infinite you know? They’ll always find their way back to each other. It’s funny how such a ridiculous comic book could contain such an honest portrayal of love. Of relationships. The good, the bad, the messy, the ugly, and the wonderful. All of it was so visceral. The many facets of loving someone else.

I’m just rambling now so lemme cut this short. I really hope Matt and Chip make another comic together. Maybe it’ll be more normal, whatever tf that means, or maybe it’ll be even weirder than time-stopping orgasms. Who knows? I’m gonna end this with one of my favorite quotes of all time. I love it because it’s true. Love is complete with or without sex. I love this quote so much I plan on getting it tattooed on my arm. Hopefully by then the world will return to some sense of normalcy and I’ll be able to go to comic con again, and maybe Matt and Chip will be there and I’ll be able to show it off.

Sex is just a word. Love is a sentence.

For mature readers. Duh.

How to describe Sex Criminals?

Sex Criminals is a sex comedy comic series about sex, relationship and time manipulation. While sex and humour plays an important role in this series, the real focus of the series are on relationships and sexuality. The sci-fi element was featured most prominently at the beginning of the story. Don't expect to see the crazy time loops in Paper Girls. I would categorise this as sci-fi lite.

What drew me to this series was the original wacky concept and the juvenile humour. From plant pooping to the sexified background signage. Every volume introduced something new that plays with the reader's expectations.

What kept me reading is the relationship between Suzie and Jon. They are so adorable. Despite their "superpower", the writer did a great job at portraying these characters with real issues and relatable flaws. The awkwardness of stepping into puberty, learning about sex from unreliable sources were handled with sensitivity and humour. The way the writer addresses the issues of mental illness and depression were appreciated by readers in the letters column.

The supporting cast range from sex worker to psychiatrist, all with their own interesting back story.

My only gripe about this series is the Sex Police storyline.

Pick this up if you are of legal age and appreciate well written adult comics like Saga and Ex Machina.

Yeah, it was time for this to end.

It's been a really fun, hilarious series, but this goes straight into serious and it's kind of confusing?

The 'funny' pages rely on you being familiar with other jokes, too, so was a bit too nested for me.

This volume seemed to jump around a lot and none of it was really satisfying. I would even go so far as to say that the final ending left me disappointed.

Definitely feels like a case of the creators coming up with a funny story but not really having a solid idea for it. The first few volumes were brilliant, and by this last volume the jokes had run dry and there weren't even any extras to speak of.

I'm glad to have finished it, and it concluded the story okay, but I am also happy to move on.

I'd almost forgotten about this. I guess I thought I'd read it all, but I hadn't finished it yet. And this is a good concluding volume for a story that had kind of lost its way for awhile.

I've always thought of this series as a series about Suzie and John's relationship. Which it totally is. But this last volume approaches its end by going back to the "criminals" premise in Sex Criminals.

In the last volume, we see Suzie and John rekindle and reconnect. Which actually seemed like a good place to end it in my opinion. A happily ever after moment in their lives. However, Fraction wraps up some of those lingering questions left by the end of the last volume. What's going to happen to the main bad guy? What is the Silence? Where do Suzie and John go from here? We see the answers to these questions and more, and it all leads to a moment in the end that emphasizes the importance of moments themselves, as they are fleeting, thus must be enjoyed to their fullest extent.

And while I was disappointed in the fact that , its still something that felt organic and real. It was an interesting way that Fraction decided to end the book, but it really shined a light on the importance of moments, and not trying to escape and instead, really experiencing them. Things are fleeting, and we cant stop time or jump back in forth in time to re-experience them, so all we can do is hold on to them and realize their importance.

I think the entire story is really well done, funny, entertaining and interesting. And while it had it's peaks and valleys, overall, I enjoyed the hell out of it. Probably my favorite thing Fraction has done.

I highly recommend this for people who like stories about relationships, with really raunchy and immature humor. If this is your type of thing, you'll enjoy the hell out of it like I did.

I probably would have benefitted from re-reading the previous 5 volumes, but alas. Even still, something about this ending felt.. rushed? But I did like the bittersweet punch at the end.

Suze begins having flashbacks to things that never happened. She feels traumatized without having experienced a corresponding trauma. And the narrative keeps jumping around mid-sentence--new locations, new contexts, sometimes new conversants. It's annoying.

But also clever, once it's explained. But then even the explanation is kind of annoying, as the entire volume just happens to the six-criminals characters. They have zero agency. They deduce some facts, make plans to oppose the final boss, and all of a sudden it's over without a confrontation. Fraction's writing always exists in a quantum state of superimposed success and failure for me, and the wrap-up to Sex Criminals is no exception.

i didn't cry though i wanted to, and perhaps I didn't cry because it's been ages since I read the last volume. I really loved these characters. Not just Jon and Suzie, but all of them. And while the happy ending wasn't a happy ending (ya, I went there), it was fitting. Fraction, Zdrasky, you all own a sliver of my heart and I will remember Dick Duck forever.

It was definitely bittersweet finishing this, as I did really love a majority of the series, but this one is just an out of control, bonkers mess. But at least things got tied up lol

Six Criminals provides a mostly satisfying resolution to Sex Criminals, including a contorted explanation of what is the Quiet and why does Badal care about it so much. It's not a great explanation and pretty much fails to explain why the Sex Police ever existed. But hey, at least it's a resolution! If in doubt: time travel.

There's also very little noodling in this volume, which I appreciated. This is the crisp narrative I was introduced to in Sex Criminals Vol 1: One Weird Trick. There's also less humor, which Matt and Chip attempt to ameliorate with a goofy gag page every few issues. It falls pretty flat.

The grand finale is suitably exciting and the epilogue is suitably sweet. Sex Criminals is a good, weird series, definitely memorable, but also definitely failing to fully deliver on the hype.

I really enjoyed this whole series and as far as endings go it's not awful. I just wanted more. I don't know if there was an ending the creators could have come up with that I would have enjoyed. It all comes down to Suze, Jon, and their other kinky friends to finally finish the "fight" against Badal. He's been getting info on them for years and it's all going to culminate in something big; except that no one knows what exactly that is. Suze decides to be the one to go after it and it turns everything they know upside down. I wanted more sex capers not the end of a series!!!! But... it is done. And it was one hell of a ride.

Well, there was certainly a bang and a climax, but that occurred halfway through the volume, leaving the second half feeling much like the end of Lord of the Rings, where everything that needed to be done is done but there's still a third of the book to go... Nonetheless, it was a nice conclusion, even though I'm more than a little mystified as to what in the hell actually happened to Badel...

I'd mostly given up on this book due to its volume-by-volume descent from greatness, but after a wheel-spinning volume 5, this is a solid conclusion. It offers a lot of explanations, ties everything into a very neat bow, and has some emotional resonance, and then the authors almost ruin things with the 69th issue, which ... I don't even know why. Still, a good final volume.

This book tapped into so many unexpected places within me, from angles on kink I hadn't considered but found personal to my unending curiosity about time manipulation and the motivation for it. I loved so much of this series, and it wrapped both wilder and more tender than the arcs that came before it. It was so silly and sweet, so ridiculous and raunchy (or, actually, more observant of raunch than the shock of its delivery). It was just a raucous good time and I will miss it dearly. Who would've believed that a story about people being able to stop time through orgasms would be so loving and relatable?

What can I say? I'm a sucker for a good ending. This wasn't the funniest installation in the story, but it had a lot of heart and really good conclusions to all of the character development that built up to it. No spoilers, but the ending of the Badal storyline kind of felt like it came out of nowhere to me and didn't satisfy as much as I'd hoped it would, but it didn't ruin the story for me or anything and the conclusion to the rest of the plot points made up for it. In all, Sex Criminals has been an incredibly fun and unique read and well worth all of the praise that it gets.

An improvement over the previous two or three but still not able to capture the magic and mystery of the first. The whole premise of the enemy was confused and convoluted and the story unraveled in spectacular fashion but the authors at least began to retighten it at the end. Happy or not, you decide, but some of it felt true.
