Well now, this is a manga that I didn't know I needed in my life, but absolutely did. It's your classic slice of life comedy, following a slacker Otaku character, but the twist is that all the leads are angels and demons. You see Heaven and Hell both want their respective influences to understand humans, and thus send them to spend time on earth as Highschoolers (because, well... manga) to get to understand humanity.
Gabriel was one of the finest of Heaven's angels, but once on earth she became corrupted by human culture. Now a fallen video game addict who would rather use the horn to summon the apocalypse than wake up early, she has to navigate human life and trick the higher ups into thinking she's still pulling off good deeds to lead humanity on the proper path (or else her heavenly allowance could be cut, and those MMOs will not pay for themselves)
Also, her best friend is a demon, who is far more angelic than she ever is.
This one is a delight. Some aspects are absolutely cliched, but it pulls it off somehow and consistently made me chuckle. The artwork is solid, the jokes are consistent and it manages to make old jokes fresh with the spin it puts upon them. Really, there's not much more I can ask for from a comedy like this. A solid 4/5 stars
I saw on Crunchyroll that this manga would get an anime, I just had to try it because the art, but also the story sounded awesome. Plus I can’t possibly wait until this one finally airs as anime.
The manga is about Gabriel, well at least at first, quite soon we have 2 other characters as well. A devil with a good heart: Weinette. And a devil who is trying really hard but doesn’t have a clue about life: Satanya/Satanika. Gabriel is supposed to be an angel, and a top-ranked one at that, but as soon as she gets to earth she is tempted by all sorts of things (games, clothes, etc.) and she turns exceptionally lazy. Also she does quite some stuff that is not fitting for an angel.
You can imagine how hilarious this gets. She is supposed to have come to earth to help out people, go to school, but instead she just lurks at home, playing games (well, until Weinette pops up and kills the power cord with her pitchfork). Each chapter features another story. From school-stories (and the hilarious first one where she, oh no, you will have to find out yourself) to her working at a store. As the stories go on you get to know the girls more and more.
My favourite girl at the moment is Weinette. At times she is really a goody-two-shoes, but sometimes, boy, you don’t want to get on her devil side, because she will kick your butt. But I also love her goody side, because she is so friendly and kind (though I had a big laugh when she was afraid for a cockroach, girl, you are a demon/devil, how can you be afraid of that?).
Satanya, when I first saw her I was worried she might turn out to be annoying, but instead I am just laughing all the time at what she does, and her evil deeds that she tries to do (tries is the big word here, she tries a lot).
Also at chapter 6 we get a new angel… or well. I am not sure what is wrong in this world, but Raphael is pretty… well… let me just say she looks like an angel, and sounds like one, but that is all that is angelic.
I really love the art and how it looks. I also like how the angels and demons look, and how different they are from the inside.
All in all, this is one series that I can’t wait to get an anime. I will definitely watch it! And I would recommend it to everyone who needs a funny story with good characters.
A generic slice of life manga that doesn't use its premise to the fullest potential. The angel aspect is extremely underutilised, appearing every now and then for a throwaway gag or brief one-liner. There are a few laughs and moments that will make you smile, but it ultimately gets lost amongst the sea of common slice of life peers.
Ooh, a surprise! I didn't know about much this manga except the premise and I thought this was fanservice-y stuff but it was quite light on fanservice and more just cute girls doing cute things. Girls who are angels and devils.
There's no grand plot, Gabriel (aka Gabi) has been sent on Earth to learn about humans but she's become a lazy gamer and not very angel-like. There's also devil girls called Vignette and Satania who aren't so devilish either. Vignette is sweet and helpful and Satania tries her hardest to be mischievous and evil but usually fails. These upside down characteristics are main source of the comedy.
And it's funny! Not laugh-out-loud funny but very enjoyable still. The comedy is usually situational which I prefer over slapstick or nonsensical. The short chapters have mostly contained slices of comedic life and I liked especially the ones with Gabi's attempts to go to school and cleaning (we all have felt that way sometimes, haven't we??), and the one where she took a job at a café (her deadpan comments!). The angel/devil aspect brings some welcome flavour to the popular cute girls, cute things concept.
Art and character designs are cute! Gabi is, despite being angel, pretty relatable and overall sympathetic. Satania is the raging type but because she's balanced by Gabi and Vigne who only lash out occasionally, she doesn't get overbearing like those kind of characters can get. Vigne's responsibility brings nice contrast to them. The characters aren't perhaps anything revolutionary but when the types are true and tried, why not use something that works.
It was a nice light read and a positive surprise which I can recommend to everyone.
I admit, I got this because of the anime and I was curious as to how the manga would be. And I have to say, I love it even more than the anime.
There is a lot to love about this manga. The art style is very nice on the eyes and a good mix of simplicity and attention to detail. The characters are pleasing to look at and maintain a level of innocence despite their own personal flaws. The humour does take a bit more to come through, as it can't rely on animation like the anime does, but I found myself laughing at things I didn't in the anime.
I really enjoyed this manga and will reread it again and again I am sure. It is very much like a Iyashikei manga, just with more comedy and more interesting character dynamics. I look forward to reading further volumes.
A slice of life humor manga set in a high school. The main characters are demons and angels.
This is a weird one. Right in the beginning, Gabriel White Tenma is a new angel who has just graduated from angel academy with the highest honors. She’s eager to go to Earth and help humans. But when we see her next, she’s a slacker. She’s only interested in playing MMORPGs and is in danger of failing both Earthly high school and possibly her angelic support as well. She doesn’t really care about anything outside video games and the others have to coax her out of her apartment.
Her friend Vignette April Tsukinose is a demon but she’s the opposite of Gabriel. She attends school and makes Gabriel attend, too. She’s very responsible, almost angel-like. However, sometimes when she really wants something, she can be manipulative. The other major demon is Satanichia who wants to become the mistress of Hell. But the evil things she does are pretty minor even though she thinks they’re major evil. She’s a bit naive. The other angel is Raphiel who is, again, not very angelic. She manipulates people (and demons) for fun. She becomes obsessed with Satanichia and stalks her.
This group of sort-of-friends attends classes and wacky things happen. Gabi also works one day a week at a cafe. She’s terrible at it but the poor cafe owner assumes that Gabi is young and a foreigner so not just tolerates her but also encourages her when she gets even something right. The angels have small angelic powers, but for Gabi they don’t really work and she doesn’t use them much. But Raphiel can teleport to Satanichia when she wants.
As is usual for humor, most of the chapters work for me but some don’t. It’s a nice change of pace every once in a while. The Finnish edition also has explanations about a couple of Japanese cultural things, such as food and eating customs, which I found fascinating.
Gabriel Dropout is also an anime, but I haven’t seen it.
I thought this sounded quite fun, and like something a bit different from the usual manga about angels and so on! Gabriel was top of the class up in Heaven, Valedictorian and everything, but when she descends to Earth to help all of us out...things go downhill.
Congrats fellow humans, we corrupted an angel with MMO games and junk food! And possibly anime by the look of the suspiciously One Piece-ish DVD case in one frame! Gabriel has become lazy and super snarky. It's brilliant.
The art and characters are really cute, I'm not going to lie and the volume had me chuckling from the beginning! Gabriel's language is freaking hilarious, she's down with the kids, shall we say! Along with Gabriel we have a couple of other characters. Vigne who provides us with the awkward moment when the devil is better behaved than the angel! I actually really like her and it'll be fun to see more of her!
Satanya was freaking hilarious with her "acts of evil" she might even be my favourite character. I just loved her, and couldn't help but cackle along with her!
Gabriel Dropout is an amusing slice of life that'll have you cackling as much as Satanya! The characters are fun and intriguing...as well as super memorable! The series should be interesting going forward, I'm intrigued to see what'll happen to Gabriel and if she'll pull herself together or not!
The angel Gabriel graduated school in Heaven as a Valedictorian, eager to begin her work helping people. But, a new requirement has angels finishing out their schooling on Earth in public high schools. Hitting the mortal realm was Gabriel's undoing. She discovered leisure activities, like video games, and now she has no motivation to attend school at all. She's in danger of failing all of her classes and being sent back to Heaven in disgrace. Gabriel's unlikely friend, Vignette, is a demon who lives in the same building and is trying extra hard to be evil. However, Gabriel's lackluster attitude outshines Vigne's in evilness, and Vigne often finds herself helping Gabriel in a most angelic way.
This odd couple is pretty hysterical. Gabriel is reminiscent of many teenagers in many countries - unmotivated, sleeping in late, messy. Vigne reminds me slightly of Ami Mizuno (Sailor Mercury) in her unintentional do-goodiness. This slice-of-life manga is slightly shorter than a normal volume, but the chapters still pack a hilarious punch despite their brevity. The art style has all of these characters drawn adorably, despite that some of them are inherently good and others, not as much.
Aside from the skipping school part, there is so far nothing in this volume that would make this title inappropriate for middle school or high school audiences.
I wanted to find this funny but I found my self wondering if the manga was finished yet. I just finished up reading some Umaru-chan and was hoping this would continue with an off branch of that kind of humor do to Gab being into playing games and liking human entertainment.
Funny!!! And the character designs are fantastically adorable. The timing of the comedy is key and works really well in this one. My type of series, for sure.
Kinda fun at times, but occasionally drops into being a bit boring, depending on what’s going on in the chapter. My girl Satania is the best though😤 she’s the number one demon
Kind of wishy-washy for me. Not every slice-of-life manga is my cup of tea, I guess. This one seems kind of dumb; more of a gag manga, maybe, without the usual extreme reactions.
Tää oli tosi iso yllätys! Aivan sairaan hyvä! Nää hahmot oli tosi kivoi! Nauroin melkee koko ajan kun luin tätä! Ja siis tää piirtotyyli oli tosi selkee ja ihana!
