I know some people don’t believe in giving one star reviews. I am not that person. The world needs honesty
The whole reason I read this series was because I was able to get a free book from my library. Out of all the options, nothing really piqued my interest until my mother showed me this book: Death by Bikini.
For a while it just sat on my bookshelf, but when I picked it up I realized Death by Bikini has to be the stupidest thing I’ve ever read. After finishing the first book I started on the second: Death by latte. I was naïve, not thinking it would be too bad. It was worse. I then decided I had to read the last one: Death by Denim. FOUL.
Here are the more memorable quotes in Death by Denim that made me pause and question what am I reading: (Keep it in mind they have only meet three times)
-"’I want to hug you and I can't,’ I choked out. ‘Hold on a sec.’ He let himself topple over so that he was lying on the ground facing me and then wriggled like a worm so that we were face-to-face. His voice went husky. ‘I want to hug you, too,’ he said. That made me cry again, only happier this time” (150)
-“He shook his head. ‘No, Aphra,’ he said softly, ‘I will never be free of you’” (152).
-“I had fallen to my knees so that I was facing away from him, but I could feel him close behind me. And I knew that it was only a matter of nanoseconds before he recovered from the shock of the handcuff whip. And then he would go for his gun. I didn't even think— because if I did, I might have hesitated, considering what I was aiming for. Like a slingshot, I swung forward and then threw all my weight into a back-of-the-head head butt to his groin” (176).
Right now you’re probably thinking “that’s not too bad” oh trust me, at the moment they were horrible.
When I picked up this series I had no expectations for romance. I didn’t think there was going to be any, and after reading what “romance” was in this book I was confused. Maybe true love after all is wiggling around on a floor with a guy you have only really met three times.
After doing some digging I realized this author is not widely known. She does not have an abundance of reviews, so I feel a little bad giving her work at such a low rating. At the end of the day reviews are reviews and I like giving my opinion. If someone wants to write a book they should do it for themselves, not make it to please others.
All in all, those are my thoughts on the Death By Mystery series.
Aphra Connolly’s life can never be normal again, not since she discovered the true nature of her mother’s work and unwittingly landed herself on the hit list of a very dangerous man known as The Mold. So, she and her mom have been flying under the radar and hiding out in France, but despite their careful precautions, they are still not safe. When they discover they’re being followed, they’re on the run once more, but they don’t get very far once Aphra’s mother’s Parisian contact is found drowned in the Seine. And just like that, Aphra finds herself a pawn in the midst of another deadly plot involving The Mole and the boy of her dreams, Seth Mulo. But this girl isn’t just another pawn in this sick game; she’s a player, sick and tired of being threatened. And she’s not leaving without a fight.
Gerber does not disappoint with this exciting novel from her Death by… series. Gerber’s strength is by far in creating such a thrilling and fast paced plot that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. There are even the spies, sleeper cells, and dangerous thugs, everyone with mixed up identities, to keep thigs fresh, interesting, and unpredictable. While I appreciate Aphra’s quick thinking and resourcefulness, I also feel the character development could’ve been better. The reader barely gets to know certain characters because the story moves along so quickly. But despite that, Death by Denim is a wholly enjoyable read, full of action, romance, and international flair. Action packed and suspenseful, Death by Denim wraps Gerber’s Death by… series into a trilogy while still leaving room for an offshoot continuation.
Fans of Death by Bikini and Death by Latte by Linda Gerber, the earlier installments in this series, won’t want to miss Death by Denim. Teen girls in particular looking for a fast and fun mystery to devour will enjoy Gerber’s Death by… series.
I always had problems with the fact that the titles of these books were so loosely connected. The title for this book related to the plotline a lot more regardless if the reader really caught on or not.
Aphra is on the run. Well, sort of. The Mole is searching for them. She's gone incognito with her mother in France under a different name. Their cover is blown and they have to flee France and go to Natalie's contact. Natalie's contact comes up dead, gagged by strips of denim. The denim came from an abandoned factory in Italy, close to the Mulo's hideout. The Mole's plan is to get Seth and Aphra together and kill them. Aphra goes on a journey to save Seth with Ryan coming back into the story as her protector. But when Aphra goes to save him, she leads The Mole right to him. . . .
This book was really good! I feel like I don't have a lot to say though because you could knock this book out in a few hours and get up realizing that it didn't phase you. You never really get connected to the characters. The characters never really grow. After the first book, Aphra's dad is just kind of thrown out of the picture and you wonder how he's doing because last we really heard was that he was recovering from Hisako (Or, however you spell her name).
The series is entertaining and a good read when you don't really have plans to read something else. Death by Denim was an extremely fast read and it was slightly annoying because the action started like 100 pages into the book and if you think about it, you get that feeling like, "Oh, the action came in, now the book is almost over". Well, that's because it is. This book is only like 230 pages and I felt like so much more could have been said, emphasized, etcetera! I just wish it was a longer story with more romance. Towards the end, you wonder if there will be another book when there obviously won't be. Seth leaves and tells her he'll see her again and the epilogue makes you feel like another story will be told.
Long story short with no sugar added: This book was good, it was a little too short, a fast read, and there was a huge lack of romance and all the mushy gushy fluff that everyone wants.
The end of another series. Sad, sad, day.

Ack! A new review from the Maelstrom. See it here:
I don’t think that I will ever get tired of this series. So forgive me for sounding a little bit repetitive as I review the third title in the Death By books.
SPOILERALERTSPOILERALERTSPOILERALERT FOR THE FIRST AND SECOND BOOKS!!!
Aphra is back. Erm… Again. And hiding out in France with fake papers. Seth Mulo, her secret lurrrver, is off and away at a separate, mysterious location. All is well aside from their being apart. Until Aphra and Natalie (Aphra’s mother) find out that they are being followed once again. They must flee to Paris to meet with one of Natalie’s contacts. But when the contact is found dead in the river, a riddle-like message in his mouth, Aphra must decide whether to finally go after “The Mole” herself or to sit around waiting for her world to fall apart all over again.
Like the previous books, I loved the characters. And while development has pretty much been set by this point, there were still some curious revelations and changes in how they related to each other. The romance between Seth and Aphra gets even more heated and more adorable (ack!), even sappy in a few moments. Even though I sensed a little bit of scandal with Agent Ryan McAwesome (anyone else, or am I just crazy?). The action also accelerated, with some scenes that were way more heart pumping than in the previous books. Definitely an improvement, for alternate reality adrenaline junkies like myself.
Ultimately, a short review, but a positive one. Definitely look for this title- out on May 14th of 2009 (Oh! Hey! That's this year!). It is worth the wait. Linda Gerber’s humor is progressively more awesome and her writing as well. 6 out of 7 Skull-Patched Jean Skirts!!! And has anyone heard news about a 4th novel? *crosses fingers*
This book is about a young girl named Aphra Connolly. She has been hiding for the past year due to a dangerous situation associated with her mom. Her mother is hinding from a man called the Mole. Aphra's boyfriend, Seth, is also hiding from the Mole with his parents. Even though Aphra desires to spend time with Seth, she wouldn't dare do anything that dangerous. Revealing their locations would put their life in deeper jeopardy than it already is. If you like books with action and love, I definitely suggest this book.
I'm very partial to mysteries and there are too few new YA mystery series. But let me tell ya, Linda Gerber's "Death By" series is everything that I love in a YA mystery! This is the third title in the series and it takes place in Paris where Aphra and her mother's cover have been blown and moves on to Italy. I found myself holding my breath as I turned the pages while Aphra tried to escape the bad guys and find her boyfriend too. I want more, more, more, please!
This book was just a good as the other two in the series. However, I was a little disappointed by how it ended. I thought there would be more between Aphra and Seth. May be she's planning on continuing the series and wants to save that stuff for the next book?
as the last book in this trilogy i would say i enjoyed it, but i felt like the plot was drastically different from the others. there was less of a mystery aspect and i felt like the plot was changing as the story went along, but not in a suspenseful way. also i don’t know if it’s just me but most of the time i was confused about the stuff involving the Agency and The Mole so the fact that this book focused more on that probably did not help my enjoyment. none the less, though, i still enjoyed reading this and overall i would still say it was a good way to tie off the end of the series-i’m actually said to say goodbye to this world!i do feel like the last 40% of the book really picked up, especially plot-wise. i found myself speeding through it and a lot more interested. i also lovedthat this book focused more on aphra’s feelings for seth, compared to just her and seth. i cherished every moment i got of them together.
Just as action packed as the first one. A final ending to the whole saga or is it?
Italy, Paris, the Island, an abandoned textile building...more deaths of loved ones, more betrayals, more romance...will Aphra find Seth again? Will she return home? Will her lose her mom to the job? Will the Mole ever be revealed?
The only thing I was unhappy with is the true ending. I need closure to this story 100%. I don't like being left with unknowns.
I’ll give it 2 1/2. I got it at the book fair a long time ago in middle school and finally read it. Like yeah I get it but some of it was like idk I tried to make it funny and entertaining in my head with the other stuff I’ve seen
wait... is there more in this series? I need to know ‘cus that epilogue was short but so intriguing. I really enjoyed this series. I’ll take teen spy stories any day.
By this book the main character is just plain annoying. The book is one long series of her refusing to do what she’s told and putting everyone in danger because of it.
The third book, (the last in the series?). You know how most series get boring and messy in the end? Not this one. This was a great series from beginning to end, the amount of suspense just increased by ever book. I lived along with the main characters Aphra and Seth, feeling all the emotion and pain that they had gone through. Not only was the series unique, but they also had a strong sense of reality to them. Even though all the things that happened in the book were extreme for real life, they could happen in our modern world; it would not be impossible. That's what I loved about this series. No matter how far away from reality they pulled sometimes, they always came back to reality. Linda Gerber is a great author and she did a fantastic job with this series. The 5 stars are not only for this book, but for the series in general.
"Death by Denim" continues the story of Aphra and Seth once again, but a whole different subject is brought up. Now both children attempt to live a normal life, though everybody knows that wouldn't happen. There is still The Mole and he is angrier than ever.
I can't say that this book is the best in the series, but it definitely isn't the worst. All of the books are great and I would not be able to decide which one is my favorite, they all had their own touch and they all caught my attention. I read the first book (Death by Bikini) quite a long time ago, but when I found the other two books in the library I decided to read them right away. And in two days, two sittings, I finished the series. I can't believe how fast it went, time just flew by like nothing else mattered. It was great and just such an awesome experience reading this series. I actually think the books wouldn't do too bad if they were made into a movie. It could become a hit!
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes suspense or romance, it has a balanced amount of both. People of all ages would enjoy this book, anywhere from 10 years old up. They just need to have the capability to read and then they would love the book. As I mentioned earlier, my mother is the one who introduced me to the series but I finished it before her. She is now almost finished with the second book and she enjoys it as much as I do. Don't hesitate to get this book if you think you are too young or old for it, you can at least give it a try.
This is one of my all-time favorite books! Love it.
Aphra Connolly is being chased again. Except now she is hiding out in Paris with her mom. But while Aphra's mom is trying to teach her tricks on how to stay alive and most importantly keep out of trouble. Aphra isn't too interested in that though, all she can think about is Seth and how much she wished that she knew where he was. But sooner, instead if later Aphra's moms tricks seem very handy when Aphra and Natalie discover a contact floating in a river with denim gags and binds. Now once Aphra is in danger again, she decides to leave and try and go find Seth, to see if he can help. Only Aphra's mom doesn't know and when Aphra finds herself in even more danger, she AND Seth have no where to run.
I love this series so much! It is filled with excitement, danger, action, hot boys and a whole lot of mystery! And all of that makes it an awesome book.
Aphra and Seth were extremely swoon worthy (well at least Seth was) in this book and there were a few intense scenes between the two of them but nothing bad. Aphra was quite gutsy in this one she left without telling her mom, even though we could sort of expect that from Aphra. I am pretty sure I wouldn't have the guts to go look for some boyfriend of mind but then again I am pretty sure Aphra is all grown up and thanks to her mom can take care if herself by now. Still I found myself worrying for her and Seth because they get themselves into more than a few scrapes.
I extremely like how everything was all wrapped up nicely with everything, and since I certainly don't want spoil the book I won't go into too much detail. But I will say that the plot in this one was extremely good and well totally swoon worthy like I said early.
I hope that we will see more of Aphra in the future but I am not so sure of that at this moment. So my final words are enjoy this excellent series while you can.
Sorry if that last line was a little too remorseful but I wish Linda Gerber would write more books about Aphra!! Oh well she does have a new book called Trance coming out that sounds absolutely spectacular, and I already have it pre-ordered!!
Aphara Connolly is back and being chased by some very dangerous people. What makes it even worse is Aphra has to completely forget about her boyfriend Seth to keep him out of trouble too, but that’s extremely hard for a girl when she’s in Paris – the most romantic city in the world. Aphra quickly comes to realize that she really cannot mess around when her mother’s contact in Paris turns up floating in the Seine with a deadly message stuffed into his mouth and she sets off to confront the situation head-on. Sneaking away from the protection of her mom, Aphra sets off to find the mastermind behind all of her danger in Italy. What she doesn’t know is that she’s accidentialy uncovered Seth’s location and put him in danger as well. Can Aphra get herself and Seth for that matter, out of this stick situation and get herself out of trouble once and for all?
These books are so much fun. First there is Aphra, who I think is so much fun and hilarious. The adventures that she went on with her mom in this volume of her sister were the best yet and I could absolutely not put the book down. Also Aphra’s relationship between Seth was great, as always. Seth sounds so adorable and great, and to see the two of them in action together was fun and exhilarating. The writing was also good and kept me in a great amount of suspense. Overall I really enjoyed this third installment in the Aphra Connolly trilogy (and how I hope Linda Gerber decides to continue with more) and highly suggest that if you haven’t had a chance to read any of them you pick them right up. And on that note, I don’t think it is necessary to read the books in order, as you kind of get caught up with previous adventures within the first few pages. So what are you waiting for? Grab one of these books today and get set to go on a great and terrifying adventure!

Death By Denim By Linda Gerber Mystery book There are 211 pages in this book.
This book is called "Death By Denim." It is filled with action and adventure! The main characters are Aphra, Aphra's mother, Leveque, and the Mole. In this book Aphra and her mom are hiding from the CIA and Mole. This is because they were trying to help protect the Mulo's, who were involved in a crime that they should not have been blamed for. The Mulo's later break out of jail and are now wanted by the CIA and Mole. Aphra and her mom are in bigger danger than they realize. Leveque told them in Paris, where they were hiding from the CIA and Mole, that he could help protect them. What Aphra and her mom didn't know is that Leveque works for the Mole. He gave them shoes with trackers in them so that the Mole could find them, and put them in more danger. After the Mole used Leveque to get to Ahphra, Leveque was murdered. Then, Aphra went behind her mom's back and went to warn the Mulo's. While doing this, Aphra and Seth Mulo were captured by the Mole. Will they ever be safe again?
I think that this was a very exciting book that always left me in suspense. For example, I was left in suspense when Aphra and Seth Mulo were captured by the Mole. The chapter ended when they were taken to the Mole's headquarters. It also showed me how unsafe that this world really is. There were many mean and evil characters and I wish that they were nicer people. For example, the mean characters like Mole and his followers tried to kill Aphra and Seth Mulo. Overall, I thought that this was an excellent book!
Death by Denim Linda Gerber 224 pages Realistic Fiction
Aphra Connolly is being chased by some very dangerous people. She knows her survival depends upon staying far away from love interest Seth, and listening to her mom's lectures on her points survival. But how is a girl supposed to live under the radar and not think about her boyfriend when she's in Paris...the most romantic city in the world? When her mom's link in Paris is found floating in the Seine with a deadly message stuffed in his mouth, Aphra realizes that she will never be able to stop running unless she confronts the situation head-on. Sneaking away from her mom, Aphra tracks down the criminal mastermind in Italy, only to unwittingly reveal Seth's location. Then, together they save a friend and almost get killed by the Mole, the person that has been trying to kill Seth.
This book was the Bomb! A couple of parts were repeated, like the dead person, but hey, what's a story without a few people dying?! I think Seth and Aphra make a great team. The caught two murderers before and survived and they just caught the guy who hired those murderers. Oops...spoiler! I also love how Ryan fits into all of this. He was Natalie's neighbor in the previous book. He is just that secret spy person that you find at just the right moment. I think the only thing I don't like is the Mole. He is just a coward to send one of his little goons to kill someone else for him. And I think he is just plain meant to want to kill someone...period. That's my opinion.
Just like Death by Latte, this book had much more action than Death by Bikini. Aphra and her mother were hiding out after escaping Seattle in book two, but The Mole discovered their new hiding place. He wants to use Aphra as bait to discover the location of Seth, her boyfried, and his family. The Mole has a psychotic need for revenge against people he feels have wronged him, and he hopes to kill all of them at one time. Aphra's adventures lead her through Paris, France, and into Italy where the series reaches its final climax.
This mystery keeps the reader guessing about which characters are good and which ones are bad. Aphra has the same problem and makes some bad decisions based on incorrrect assumptions. They get her into increasing trouble, but that's what builds the suspense and makes the story more exciting. I enjoyed how the author allowed Aphra to use her intelligence to solve problems, but she still made silly mistakes. It's nice to have an inexperienced "agent" making mistakes, unlike some other novels with teenage protagonists. It's unbelievable that kids can solve problems for government agencies, but it's even more incredible when they do it perfectly. Aphra makes a big mistake when she believes Ryan, an agent, is lying to her and ditches him in Italy. She realizes this is a big problem when she's headed to The Mole and has no idea what she'll do when she gets there.
This series is great for readers who enjoy mysteries. It's also great for readers just getting into mysteries, because it contains plenty of suspense but is not overly complicated.
