Light novel series, once they get to around the third or fourth volume, seem to always introduce side characters that I don't care about. Either that or they delve into some random story that I also don't care about. This volume did just that, and surprise-- I didn't care about it.

Compared to volume 3, volume 4 of How Not to Summon a Demon Lord was weaker in terms of plot. The climax and ending also seemed very similar to volume 3 for some reason. If you know what happens to Rem in volume 3, you pretty much know what happens at the end of this volume.

I didn't like the new character introduced in this volume, but I did like the plot twist having to do with a different character. How Not to Summon a Demon Lord gets a solid three stars from me and that's about it.

How not to summon a demon lord is in many ways a very stereotypical isekai, but it's a well written one. Will keep following this series.

There's no way to sugar coat this. this volume was awful. I don't like saying that, especially because this was a series i have kind of enjoyed up to this point, but as of now, it's getting exhausting.

This time around Diablo finds a priestess lady and is going to this area to speak with the church and reform it so it isn't corrupted. and it's exactly as boring as it sounds. Hey, do you like people discussing medieval theological revisionism? well then this is the book for you. only this is not the time and place for that.

Besides the plot being boring, the tropes that keep happening are just tiring at this point. with the exception of this one new character who shows up in this volume, a thiefy kid named Horn, EVERY. SINGLE. male character in this series is either cartoonishly stupid, or cartoonishly evil. I swear if they're not completely inept (minus MC Diablo) they are cartoonishly evil to the point that they'd make Dr. Evil blush.

like they're not just "mwaha i'll twirl my mustache and kill you" they're like "sexually assault you with a demonic sacrifice" evil. and it's to the point that whenever i see a character that's a male and they're not silly i immediately go "welp. they're stupidly evil" and nearly every single FEMALE character either joins this guy's harem or is just "Misunderstood" or "gets redeemed". the dudes? NOPE. death for them. but if they're hot girls, they 9/10 times get that sweet second chance. It's tiring.

Because this is also kind of an ecchi series too, the author needs to come up with reasons why they characters are naked without actual sex being a factor and man....they're really stretching by volume 4. one is an aforementioned "sexual sacrifice" while the other is a "tee hee let me wash you in the bath" scene. really out of place considering the scene that just took place before it and unwarranted.

For all intents and purposes, MC is immortal. i'm just gonna come out and say it. Every time it looks like he MAY be screwed, he always has some kind of ass pull that saves him whether it be a spell he's never mentioned before, or an item that helps him out and is ODDLY SPECIFIC to the dire situation he's in. and of course, even though he's supposed to be this awkward gamer dude, every single girl falls for him because of course they do.

So in the previous volume, Diablo basically revives the demon lord, but now it's a cute little anime girl who likes biscuits. they have to come up with some contrived reason why they can't just bring her along, because since she's the demon lord, if she came along, the arc would wrap up in two seconds. probably shouldn't have had the demon lord arc resolve itself in volume 3 if you planned on running this for the long haul. just saying.

The only time i was actually kind of excited, was about 1/2 way through the book when Horn basically goes "hey! there's a cool dungeon with a bunch of loot in it" and diablo goes "oh! that's my dungeon with all the loot i couldn't keep on me!" and you think they're going to go to that dungeon and they're like "nahhh we need to deal with theological politics first. let's ignore that for now" and, low and behold, they ignore the dungeon and go do the politics. and without giving spoilers away they basically say "welp, looks like we have to go to the dungeon!" so yes. they have to go there now anyway, rather than earlier when they could have just done the fun thing first.

All in all, if you couldn't tell, i really didn't like this one. the characters are bland, priorities are wildly out of order, and male characters are cartoonishly evil to the point of stupidity. I own volume 5 as i had bought it prior, but if 5 is anywhere as bad as this one,i'm just done. this was, in a word just BAD. nothing of value in this one other than it read fast and the final battle wasn't COMPLETELY awful. barely squeaking out a 2 on this one

2 out of 5.

All in all, an average book in this series. It introduces the next woman in Diablo's harem, and starts them off on their conflicts for this book and the next.

You get more of the evil paladin stuff that we have already seen, and have been introduced to more modern tech than we've seen in previous books. (like magic guns and the like) There are some interesting elements in this book that made it interesting, but not enough to fully capture my attention in all honesty.

The whole holy maiden believes Diablo is 'God' felt forced, and in turn pulled me out of the story. As things progress, it just seemed to get worse, with her fully devoted so Diablo as he continues to do his accidental lewd events and over powered fighting.

That said, one thing I am still thankful for, is as over powered as Diablo is, he is still challenged by his opponents. He has to think his way out of situations and the problems he faces. There are people close to his power that he has to outwit when they clash. It's quite refreshing, especailly as I am reading this alongside Overlord, Vol. 1: The Undead King where Ainz is the complete opposite, easily dispatching anything and everything in his path.

In the end, I am enjoying this series. There is a nice mix of humor, fan service, and actual character development to keep me interested for quite some time. Well worth the read.

Dissapointing

This volume is really disappointing, two main characters are left behind, which makes no sense. The reasons from Alicia to get rid of the races is so bad that it looks that was written as an afterthough from the author. The combats are just ok, the new characters are just plain and boring and most of the scenes doesn't make sense. Some parts are just distasteful without any reason for it.

I gave 4 stars for the first 3 books. This one's 5 stars ! Finally a 5 star book im this series.

We finally go beyond Faltra!!~
New and interesting characters are introduced. Some of them quite strong !
Action packed and a lot more ecchi than usually!

I especially like how smart the new characters are and I hope to see more of these kind of characters that are not OP, yet are difficult to deal with.

Conclusion: The story's getting better, therefore I will continue.

Easy, quick read. A little more ecchi than the first three volumes, as but not horribly so.

Also, this volume finally takes us beyond the scope of the first season of the anime.

Another awesome volume

Damn! Just wow! This volume was packed to the rim. After having read this volume, I see why the Anime stopped where it did. The series goes from being "R" rated to "X". That being said I still loved it and am looking forward to reading more. This series has really restored my faith in light novels.

The story is good enough but the ecchi element is just too much. They always romanticize rape or the attempt of it. I'm curious on what thoughts is running through the author's mind while he's writing that trash.

A new one joins the harem

It just gets better and better as you read more volumes. I enjoyed this volume especially since it means the next one is gonna come out which is my favorite. There's more battles in this one than previous volumes which is super rad.

There was a bit too much nonconsensual stuff for the normal 4 or 5 stars I usually give these novels.

That’s my only complaint though. I like that the world has expanded beyond the other novels as well as all the action sequences there were.

As you can see from the cover a new girl joins the demon lord's group. The sexuality of this series was ramped up in this book especially with the new one. It is not hard to see where it is all going. Great story so far can't wait for more.

So good

This book is one of my favorite light novels that I’ve read. The whole isekai plot has been done to death but this one just clicks with me for some reason.

Great comedy fantasy, I rate it alongside Discworld at its best.
