Dark Alpha's Hunger is the sixth paranormal romance novel in New York Times bestselling author Donna Grant's Reapers series featuring a brotherhood of elite assassins who wage war on the Fae at Death's behest--and the women who change their hearts.
There is no escaping a Reaper. I am an elite assassin, part of a brotherhood that only answers to Death. And when Death says your time is up, I’m coming for you…
Where Death leads, I follow. Nothing will stop me from my duty – not even the darkness that claims me. It’s the music that leads me from the dark, returning me to my brethren and a new foe that has risen. Learning who hunts Thea could be the key to unraveling what we need to know to defeat our enemy. The Half-Fae’s music stirs a passion within me that I’ve never known. For her, I will break my vow of silence. For her…I will risk everything.
Donna is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of over a hundred novels. Her most popular series is the breathtaking Dark King (aka Dragon King) series featuring dragons, immortal Highlanders, and the Fae.
In addition to her novels, Donna has written short stories, novellas, and novelettes for digital-first and print release. She has been dubbed as giving the “paranormal genre a burst of fresh air” by the San Francisco Book Review. Her work has been hailed as having “deft plotting and expert characterization” by Publisher’s Weekly and “sizzling” by RT Book Reviews.
She has been recognized with awards from both bookseller and reader contests including the National Reader’s Choice Award, Booksellers Best Award, as well as the coveted K.I.S.S. Award from RT Book Reviews.
Donna travels often for various speaking engagements, conferences, and book signings. She is also a frequent workshop presenter at national conferences such as RT Book Lovers Convention and Thrillerfest, as well as local chapters.
Born and raised in Texas, she also has ties across the border in Louisiana. Growing up with two such vibrant cultures, her Cajun side of the family taught her the “spicy” side of life while her Texas roots gave her two-steppin’ and bareback riding. She is never far from her faithful 80 pound dog, Sisko, or her three cats. She can often be found at the movies or bookstore with her children. Or buying makeup. And shoes.
Yeah! Eoghan is finally rescued from the dark pit and whatever creature was chasing him. Thea is an orphan, so she has no knowledge of Fae or that she is even one. She was perfect for him, and when she finds out who her mother...wow.
It was nice not to have a battle with Bran, especially if he wasn't going to die. And now I know why Ms. Grant's website has listed books 8 and 9 (titles to be announced later).
Every so often I need a hit…a high…a shot of short, intense and heart-pounding ROMANCE. The more books I read, the more I find myself needing to mix up my sub-genres. I NEED to step away from reality into another world where dark fights light, magic hits you with a blink of the eye and love conquers all. I need my fix of paranormal romance and Donna Grant gives it to me in a great little package.
There’s a trick to getting a short story right. Obviously, you must get to your point quicker so that you get a full story in a little package. It helps to know your characters well enough to be satisfied, so here is where the short-story connected series works well. You know your characters, or at least one of the characters, from previous instalments. The world or place the story is set in is somewhat familiar. There’s generally an underlying plot that you’re desperate to get to the bottom of that connects each instalment. A successful short story gives you everything you want in a little package. Well, that’s what I think.
Donna Grant does this extremely well. The Reapers series has left me satisfied with each instalment and desperate for more. As I get to know each Reaper, I find myself heartbroken to read of how they got to the position, and desperate to see them find happiness…or a Reaper kind of happiness. I mean honestly, how happy can you be forking out Death’s justice? It’s a hard job, but someone’s got to do it.
In Dark Alpha’s Hunger we get to know Eoghan. His name has been on all of the Reaper’s minds for a wee while as he’d disappeared. Turns out, a big blob of bad held him prisoner behind some magical rock and it takes a halfling who plays a good jig to get him out. Well, that’s the short and very badly described condensed version. The actual story is so much better, trust me…not my description.
If you’re looking for a series with a bit of grit and lots of heart, like your heroes to fall hard and fast and want it to be full of action and adventure, you can’t go wrong with the Reapers. The Reapers are connected to Donna’s other series that include Dragons, Fae and other magical beings. I highly recommend.

The sixth book in the Reaper series by Donna Grant is called DARK ALPHA’S HUNGER. As a preface, I want to warn readers who may be new to this series that it’s really important to read the books in order. Although Grant provides some recap, there isn’t very much of it in this book.
With this book, the heroine, Thea, becomes the key to Eoghan’s solution. This book definitely had a different feel from the other books in the series and I’m not necessarily sure it was a good thing. Although Grant’s writing is very free-flowing and easy to read, I felt like it really lacked character this time. There were virtually no descriptions and very little details which seems a bit odd since most of her books that I’ve read usually have all this. To me, it almost felt like the author was rushing through this book, leaving out a lot of the key points that make this book feel full. Despite getting the main points across, I really do feel like parts of this book were underdeveloped.
However, I did end up liking the main characters of this book. Both Thea and Eoghan have interesting stories. But like I said, something does feel a bit lacking. The romance is there, but I felt like the sparks didn’t shine as brightly because things felt a bit rushed. As a result, this is a very fast read. I read it all in one sitting so I definitely felt like things moved a bit too swiftly. I’m hoping that Grant’s future books are less rushed and more detailed next time.
3 - "Take whatever happiness you can, when you find it..." Stars.
Book six; Dark Alpha’s Hunger, in Donna Grant’s Reapers series, finally gives us Eoghan’s story, one I have been desperately waiting for since his capture earlier on in the series.
It had been too many eons since he’d last yearned for the touch of another…
Spoliers Ahead
As I am sure you can guess from my rating, I wasn’t that impressed by this one. So much so, I literally had to drag myself through it, and for its length, this is a story that would normally take me an evening, in actuality took days. The story (if you can call it that) almost completely stepped away from the original arc that the previous Reapers books took, in regards to Bran trying to take down Death and the Reapers, but instead the author decided to introduce another six Reapers into the mix, and create a whole new team.
"We each have our own paths…"
All of the previous women introduced have been a welcome addition to the original team, each with their own powers having relevance at a pivotal plot point, Thea not-so-much, apart from her music being the catalyst that pulled Eoghan back from the abyss, and as you would expect being the woman he instantly falls in love with, her other extremely tenuous and pretty pointless connection didn’t really add anything at all really. Although to be honest the story line itself was pretty weak, and lacking in any real depth, I am just hoping that the author does not now decide to stretch this story out over another six books, I just don’t think it’s got the legs to expand that far with any success anyway.
"I’ll never push you away again."
I am hoping that the whole Cael/Erith/Bran situation comes to the fore in the next novella, because I am on the cusp of calling time otherwise.

This was another great addition to the Reaper series. Eoghan and Thea were great together and I loved how DG wrote the magic and pull of music into their love story. Length wise, this did feel really short compared to the past books but the MCs got plenty of page time to bond and their chemistry was hot. Because of the on-going plot that connects all the Reapers together, this does end with a cliffy but I enjoyed this little side excursion so much, I didn't even miss Bran and his evil doings at all :)
I'm super intrigued by Death and Cael, that is an angst filled love story if I ever heard one! And of course I can't leave out the second stringers that made an appearance. This series is still going strong and can't wait to see what and who is up next.
Would I recommend? Yes. Fantasy lovers will get a kick out of these gruff protectors and awesome ladies they fall hard for.

Former Reaper Bran has never forgotten the woman he loved who died because he told her what he was. His need for vengeance has no bounds and now he is almost in sight of that thing he wants most Death on her knees ! Death might be losing her powers but she still has a trick or two up her sleeves and to stop Bran she needs one very special Reaper but the problem is Eoghan is trapped in a hell dimension. Step forward Thea, a woman with a passion for music that soothes the soul. Alone and always seeking something intangible but her music calls to all even a deadly Fae who will crawl back to the living to help save Death but can Eoghan then save Thea ? Another quick read about those Light and Dark Fae who are the bogey men the Fae all fear. Eoghan was a bit unexpected to me as not only had he sacrificed himself but he had previously taken a vow of silence which quickly seemed to be cast aside ! I understand though that the mission Death gave him meant a new beginning which is very exciting to the reader but alas my lips are sealed. What I can say is this story which introduced Thea took the overall storyarc in a new direction. Yes there’s still Bran at large up to who knows what but with this edition to the series the plot has definitely thickened. As much as I was happy to see Eoghan and Thea fall in love if honest it was everything happening around them that I really enjoyed. Expect revelations, new allies and Death about to do what she does best and that female most certainly doesn’t take prisoners ! This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

Grant continues with her Reaper Series. This one gives romance, loyalty, paranormal and did I mention ROMANCE. DEATH is female and on the side of good but is loosing her battle to death herself. Her warriors, secretly known as reapers fight the war between the Light and the Dark Fae. Fans of OUTLANDER will sigh when an orphan Thea is drawn to the portal stones in Ireland even as a young child. As an adult Thea is still a magnet to this magical place. Finding peace in music and on one of her frequent visits to the portal stones she rescues a silver eyed man from the torture of another Realm. Dark Alpha's Hunger is a quick read that is full of page turning adventure. "A copy of this book was provided by St. Martin's Press via Netgalley with no requirements for a review. Just when I thought we were getting closer to the end, we get introduced to a bunch of new characters. I have to admit I have no idea where the author is going next, but more is good.
I'm enjoying this series. It's unique and has very appealing characters. I also like how this gets intertwined with the Dragon Kings series.
It's good to see Eoghan. I like him more now that his role has been expanded. I'm curious how much Thea is going to be able to do now that her identity has been revealed, but the one I'm really looking forward too is Erith. I'm guessing her story will be the last one in the series.
I would recommend starting at book 1. There are too many characters to keep up with and an overall storyline that continues in each book. The great thing about this series is that each book is about the size of a larger novella and they sure do pack a punch.
This was a great addition to the Reaper series and I can't wait to learn more of these characters. I really like the way Grant put more and new characters into the story and the world that she has created. I can't wait to read all the upcoming books!
Also, I wish Bran dies soon because I'm kind of sick and tired of him.
I might change the rating later to 4 stars. I have to think about it some more.
Dark Alpha's Hunger by Donna Grant is book Six in the Reaper series. This is the story of Thea and Eoghan. I have read the previous books which added to my enjoyment of this one, but you can make this a standalone book if you wish to do so. This has been such an exciting series to read and this book just added more to the series. Thea's music smooths Eoghan who is in a dark place. Their bond starts to grow opening them both up to a life they didn't think they would have but there is still the threat that continues for this series. Overall loved reading their story and can't wait for the next installment into the series!
Dark Alpha's Hunger by Donna Grant. This was a fun quick read beautifully done by this author. While this is not my first read, I find Donna Grant books really are enjoyable. Eoghan and Thea were great together and I loved how Donna Grant wrote the magic and pull of music into their love story. Length wise, this did feel really short I love books that have love and magic attached and will definitely be going back to read books 1-5. Donna Grant welcome back on my radar. This had enough Light and dark to have me connected the whole way through.
Dark Alpha's Hunger is the 6th book in the Reapers series by Donna Grant.
This is a paranormal romance read, but unfortunately needs to be read with the others in the series. I enjoyed my time with this story but I feel that it would have been more enjoyable if I was up to date with the overall story arc. Going into a book that is 6th in a series is always a risky chance, I have only recently started reading Donna grant and I really enjoy her way of writing and the worlds she creates.
I loved the Dragon Kings series and the Reapers are equally engaging, alpha, sexy, fierce and loyal! These stories build upon each other and cross over characters, so read in order. It's like a sitcom of hunky Fae, dark and light, Death (is a person) and fantasy is at it best in this series. Amazing world building and story telling! The good guys are amazing and the bad really bad! I can't wait for Usaeil and Bran to get just what they deserve! And Rhi and Constantine (Dragon king) to finally be together and learn all of Usaeil's trickery and deceit allowing them to be heartbroken and apart for years!! But I digress, buy these books start in order and fall in love with these characters! Game of thrones and Hobbit fans will love these books! 4. 5 stars! Gifted read by Netgalley for an honest review.
FTC DISCLAIMER: I RECEIVED AN E-ARC FROM THE PUBLISHER THROUGH NET GALLEY. I VOLUNTARILY OFFER MY HONEST REVIEW OF THE BOOK, THOUGH IT IS NOT EXPECTED OF ME! RECEIPT OF THIS BOOK IN THIS MANNER DOES NOT AFFECT MY OPINION OF THE BOOK OR THE CONTENT OF MY REVIEW!
Like another GoodReads reviewer of this book, I have not read the entire series, so I often feel as though I am missing out on key elements of the overall arc. However, I do find the books engaging and engrossing despite my lack of backstory knowledge. Unfortunately, with this book I had a hard time remembering who Eoghan was, and Death's surprise move regarding him felt out of place, especially since it seemed like he came back only to be lost to his "team" again. I also felt that we didn't get much of his backstory, making him a difficult character to connect with. Thea was a bit more likeable, and her lack of backstory was well explained, going so far as to show us readers some of her childhood, which I thought was a wonderful touch, because it made me more sympathetic to her. Thea's paranormal music ability was not well explained and I felt the story lacked because of it. The romance felt really rushed to me, though I could see why in light of Thea's parentage! What a twist there and what saved it from a 2 star review! While this was a quick read, and somewhat engrossing, I felt it suffered too much from a "rushed" feeling.
I love the cover because the lady on it has blue hair, just like our heroine. And I am a little jealous because I want to dye my hair like that one of these days. The one thing I remember strongly when I think of this book is the ending. The situation got serious pretty fast and Death has decided to step up her game. I have been wanting to read her story for quite some time now and I hope that the next book will be hers. Another thing that surprised me is the mention of Constantine's name. I do hope that he will make an appearance one day soon. I also hope that he and Death are going to be a couple and I guess I will have to wait and see what happens. We have 3 more books coming in this series alone and as some of you might now most of Donna Grant's paranormal series are connected, so you never know what will happen next.
I really wish we had spent more time on the developing of the characters. Thea is not your usual girl and I feel like we scratched the surface with her. I wanted to see her playing the music more and also the effect it had. Eoghan was an important person to the rest of the character from the moment I picked a book in the series and I don't feel like that was as pronounced in this book as it was in the other two I have read. He was tasked with a very important role and I want to see how it will carry it on in the future books. These two had a good story, but the sparks weren't there. They could have easily taken on this journey as friends. My opinion might change once I see them again in the next book though. At least I hope that they will appear...
Overall, the book was good and I would recommend it.
My Thoughts - 5 out of 5 Unicorns - I loved it!!! ***I choose what I read and review based on what intrigues me!! Yes, I got a review copy of this book, but no one tells me what to think, feel, or write about any book! I own this whole series in ebook!
The cover is steamy!
This is the 6th book in the series, but it is only the 2nd book I’ve read in this series. I need to read them all, but other books keep getting in the way. The problems a bibliophile has. This is for adults only due to the steamy content and violence. You can obviously read them out of order; I suspect that it would be more epic reading them in order.
This is Eoghan and Thea’s story. I don’t want to give anything away, but you learn a lot of secrets in this book. This book in full of action, adventure, backstories, and romance. Eoghan is amazing especially with his backstory. He has more strength and character, and it shows in all his actions. Thea is an orphan, but she is musically gifted. She finds out things about herself she never knew, but she also has more strength than she is given credit for. It is really hard to write a review and not give anything away. Take my advice and read this book if you are a Donna Grant fan.
I highly recommend to fans of fae, reapers, magic, hard luck stories, and romance because this book was packed with awesomeness! I loved it and bought it!
This is the second of the series I’ve read and I just get more invested, the more I read! Thea and Eoghan’s courtship is filled with bravery and trust, which sometimes are hard to find. Not with the Reapers though and definitely not with the women they find at their sides...
Eoghan was rescued from the he** he had been existing in and was instantly taken with his rescuer. Thea was another great character – unique, warm-hearted and completely enthralled with Eoghan as well. Together, they were going to do battle. For Erith, for themselves. So many questions and they were determined to get answers – while falling in love...
This is great story-telling as usual with a story arc that is continues to build the tension... Erith is at the center of this series and I can’t wait for her and Cael’s story! ~Diane, 4 stars
Thea's music is the key to freeing Eoghan from the hell realm he is in. Things have changed on Earth while he is gone though. He also can't stop thinking about Thea.
I really enjoy this book. Eoghan has always been a mystery since he rarely talks. His history is so heartbreaking I just wanted to give him a hug. Thea is the perfect person for him because she brings out the best in him. She is also great for the new team. Thea's lineage was surprising and unexpected. I quite enjoyed that twist even though it was quite emotional.
I can't wait to see what is going to happen next after the epilogue. Death is finally ready to kick some ass and I can't wait.
This book was totally engrossing, once you start don’t plan on putting it down. The author has uncanny ability to make you feel and hear the music that Thea plays. I swear I was swaying to the music in more than one part. Readers feel the fear, frustration, anger, (you name it) of the characters. Eoghan is definitely swoon worthy between his attitude and his quicksilver eyes! The storyline is so different it’s refreshing. Book can be read as a stand-alone (I did, and yes went back and purchased the previous books in the series) but would probably be better if read in order so have a better sense of the other, lesser characters problems. Has its own HEA. Paranormal readers will want to gobble this up. Highly recommend, you won’t be disappointed! Reviewed for NetGalley.
Read in 2022 I finally got back to reading the Reaper series. I did a re-read to refresh my knowledge of the series first. And I can say that Eoghan's story didn't disappoint. It was fast paced, action packed and full of little surprises. I loved it.
New characters and more pieces of the BIG puzzle. Hmmmm. I hope this doesn't mean it is going to drag on until things are finally resolved. That gets old.
I was glad to finally learn what happened to Eoghan and to see him find his HEA with Thea. I was hoping to learn more about what Bran is up to, something this story does not address. We do get to learn more about Erith, Rhi, and Usaeil. A new character is introduced, Xaneth, and it's not clear what his role will be in the upcoming battle. Additionally, there are now six new reapers added to the mix. The final scene promises more action to come. Cael's story is next!
However, Dark Alpha's Hunger was disappointing in that there was not a lot of action compared to the previous novellas in this series, Thea's kidnapping and rescue notwithstanding. Nor was there as much character development; Eoghan's and Thea's relationship is not as fleshed out as some of the previous couples. I’m hoping that Donna Grant’s upcoming books provide more details. I notice that the next Reaper story will be a full-length novel and not a novella, so that should provide ample space and opportunity to move this series forward. Looking forward to reading it.
I preface this review by freely admitting that I have not read the entire series. This does make following the story somewhat difficult at times. I did not know who Eoghan was but that did not detract from the story. It was easy to figure out and follow. This gentleman had apparently been lost in a dark dimension for some time. The sound of beautiful preternatural music leads to his escape and his meeting Thea. The problem I have with these books are the length—not only the length of story but also the short length of time it takes and main characters to fall in love. It rings hollow and is unrealistic, and this is not the first Reaper book I have read. The story with Erith is also getting old, I don’t know the whole tale but it’s annoying the hell out of me. I feel like these books are rushed and short and therefore don’t get fleshed out very well. I don’t expect this to change.
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thanks
What I love about these books is that the story keeps moving forward without ever slowing down and making it boring. The draw back to that (and to how short these are) is how fast everything happens. Like here, Thea and her best friend simply accept everything they're told right away without much, if any, convincing. At least with Thea's part it was shoved in her face. While I like that because then I don't get frustrated with them being stubbornly against it, I also sometimes find it ridiculous. I mean, come on, falling in love within a day or two when you don't even know the person? Apparently I can't win.
Thea is an orphan and very much a solitary person. She prefers to be alone to the point that she could gladly go days without even talking to her friends. Since she was a child she has felt a pull to a specific stone portal and always goes there. Music has saved her in so many ways and Thea rarely goes out without her violin. Often she goes to these stones and plays. She didn't know why they called to her, but she's about to find out.
Eoghan is trapped in that dark realm, still running from the creature he can't see, when he hears music that promises him freedom. It's a fight to get thru the portal, but with Thea's help he barely manages to make it and destroy it before the creature can follow him. He tells Thea to run, and that's exactly what she does. Even so, Eoghan finds himself seeking her out once more.
When they meet again, it's pretty much insta everything. Or as they figure, it was Fate. Eoghan's desire for Thea is almost overpowering, and despite everything that she's already seen, Thea can't stop wanting him either. When Thea gets kidnapped, Eoghan will stop at nothing to get her back and then to get the answers about why. Even if it means going against his vow to Erith.
Despite not moving any closer to stopping Bran, this was a great step forward. I loved the surprises we got here. From what Erith decides to do with Eoghan to whose daughter Thea is. We also get a bunch of new characters making it obvious this series is far from over. Plus we end with Erith going back for her sword, so that's bound to make things even more exciting.
There were a couple things that I really would have liked explained more. First and foremost, where exactly was Eoghan stuck? This seemed kind of important to me. So when he just escapes it and that's the end of that, I was left wanting to know more about the place and how exactly he got there and such. Then there was Thea's music. I get it, she's fae. Daughter of a powerful one at that. But how the heck does that translate into her having some special fae music power or whatever?
Anyway. This was great and I look forward to what's to come.
Oh my, mysterious, quiet, and loyal, Eoghan lived up to all my expectations! He was sweet, thoughtful, intelligent, and so full of feels...Ack! I couldn’t help but love him!
Thea had my curiosity peaked from the start. Part human/fae, Thea was smart, quirky, musically gifted, but had a past I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy! She was a great match for Eoghan with her creative temperament, and I loved how the two brought out the better halves of each other.
Eoghan’s romantic timing (rather the lack of) with Thea was frustrating at times, but the end result made up for his delays. I enjoyed their interactions and conversations, yet wish the story focused more on them. Sharing pages with Cael, Death, and one rather unsavory character was great and furthered the overall plot, but I wanted...you know, just more of Eoghan and Thea.
Due to the length of this series, I’m hit and miss when reading the books in order, but I can usually start one and not be too lost. Grant always provides enough background to catch readers up to speed. The Dark Alpha series I’ve read separate from the Dark World and haven’t had any trouble following who’s who. For a deeper understanding of the politics, Dragon Kings, and power struggles, read the books in order for sure. Otherwise, if you’re looking for quick, steamy, action-packed reads, the Dark Alpha series is a good place to pop in without too much trouble!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
OH EM EFF GEE!!! I finally made it to the end of the book!! I kinda saw it coming!! I thought the dad was going to be "he who has not been named yet" and nearly had a panic attack!!!! I am so excited for the next book! Is it time yet?!?!?!
