Amy's Diary #1 Space Alien...Almost?
At fourteen, Amy Von Brandt doesn’t feel particularly close to anyone. Since her father died, her mother has become some sort of a zombie, except all of a sudden, she’s back to life (and even wearing edgy underwear!). Could there be a connection with Dennis Belcher, the school principal? (OMG!) As for her best friend, Kat, love has rendered her brain uncharacteristically mushy. No way that’s happening to her, either! But it seems no one is truly safe from love at first sight… And in the middle of all this chaos, there’s only one thing Emily really wants: to find her place in the universe.

So, I went into this as 10-12 year old me and tried to see it through her eyes as I believe that this is around the right ages for this, but of course its probably more so 8-15 to widen the range. Unfortunately though, I dont think 10-12 year old me liked it so much. It wasnt bad, it just wasnt really for me. The idea of the story was good, but not every book is ment for everyone and that is the case with this one for me. I would pass it along to others to read. I will add though that I did like the illustrations. The details and the use of colours chosen.

I enjoyed taking a glimpse inside Amy’s Diary in this fun graphic novel. Amy is a fourteen year old girl with a few teenage problems. Balancing time with your best friend and a new boyfriend is tricky at any age and this book highlighted life as a young teen real well. Amy is dealing with homework, best friend issues, stuff with mom and the new guy in her life.
This story reminded me of all the drama that goes along with being a teenager and how complicated life can feel. I liked the graphics and journal entry pages throughout the book. This is a great story for a young teen.

Honnêtement, Aurélie a bien vieilli. J’avais oublié à quel point je l’aimais. Par contre, je crois que deux points auraient pu être modifiés!
J’ai conscience qu’elle écrit dans son propre journal, mais je crois que pour donner l’exemple, ça aurait pu être remplacé. Elle utilise le terme « retardé » qui n’est plus un terme acceptable surtout dans le contexte qu’elle l’utilise. Il y a aussi un petit passage à connotation grossophobe où elle dit que si Kat mange du popcorn à chaque fois qu’elle va au cinéma, elle va devenir obèse….

An Appealing Heroine
In a book world loaded with angst, messages, and ripped from the headlines teen drama this book is distinguished by its authentic good nature and mild but pointed observations about the awkwardness and joy of being fourteenish.
Our heroine has to deal with school issues, a BFF made nutz by first love, a Mom who's heading back out into the dating scene, and maybe a first love of her own. The book is loaded with silly little bits, graceful throwaway lines, and a refreshing strong streak of upbeat honesty.
And so, this book was exactly what I was hoping for. A heroine I could like, identify with, and root for. Uncluttered drawing with crisp lines, brightly presented characters, and personality. There is a good deal of dry and deadpan humor, and even when the joke is at the heroine's expense it is more affectionate than pointed. This was a nice, lively pick me up and a good find.

Un roman graphique siiiii nostalgique pour moi! C’était beau de retrouver Aurélie. Les illustrations était en plus magnifiques et représentaient exactement ce comment je m’imaginais toutes ses péripéties lorsque j’étais jeune.
Je ne comprenais toutefois pas pourquoi on y retrouvait déjà Tommy. Peut-être que ma mémoire me fait défaut, mais je croyais qu’il n’arrivait que dans le tome 3. Toutefois, je crois avoir compris que le roman graphique est adapté un peu différemment des romans initiaux. Mais même si l’histoire est un peu twisté, j’ai lu le tout le grand sourire aux lèvres. Je feelais comme si je retrouvais une amie de longue date.
Aurélie c’est vraiment la OG "on a discovery journey main character". La moi de 11 ans est heureuse et celle de 22 va aller acheter tous les autres tomes juste parce que.
India Desjardins et Aurélie Laflamme ont été celles qui m’ont fait adorer la lecture en premier quand j’étais toute petite et maintenant qu’elle m’ont fait lire mon premier roman graphique, peut-être seront-elles celles qui me font aimer ce genre de livre.

Very disappointed in this book based on the review it got in School Library Journal. I bought the French novels it was based on but I’m not very compelled to read them after suffering through this graphic novel. Nothing new here in the teen angst genre. Boy crazy girls with acne problems. I did not feel it was appropriate to say there was a hamster that was raped. I can’t recommend this book to anyone so may delete it from my library immediately.

Cette BD est plus que plaisante, que ce soit pour son histoire, ou pour ses illustrations. Je ne pense pas me tromper en te disant que ce premier tome de la BD “Le journal d’Aurélie Laflamme Extraterrestre… Ou presque”, plaira à toutes les adolescentes et pré-ado. Ou celles qui le sont restées quelque part au fond d’elles. Winking smile
A lire si vous aimez : Les héroïnes attachantes, réalistes. L’humour, on peut apparenter cette BD à de la chick lit.

Just what I was looking for: easy graphic novel to read while falling asleep- no superheroes, sad medical diagnoses, and not ugly or sexually explicit. A pleasant, interpersonal-drama. I’m a fan of slice of life stuff for drifting off purposes :)

It was okay. I think the translation to English may have led to some awkward phrasing. The storyline didn't have much depth.

B.D. jeunesse, je conseil à tous, mais le public cible est beaucoup plus de 12 ans à 14 ans. Aurélie est dans ces âges là, donc je vois bien une ou un jeune adolescent lire cette bande dessinée. Nous suivons les aventures d’Aurélie, avec ses amies et la rencontre de Nicolas. Elle écrit son journal ou elle note ses pensées et des moments clés de sa journée. J’ai bien aimé ma lecture et je conseil cette B.D. à n’importe qui, vous ne pouvez que passez un bon moment. Pour ma part, j’ai trouvé ça fort intéressant.

Ça fait quelque temps que je souhaite découvrir le personnage d’Aurélie Laflamme. J’ai même reçu le premier tome de la saga littéraire lors d’un swap. Je ne sais pas pourquoi, mais la couverture trop jeunesse (ancienne édition) ne m’attirait pas plus que ça et me donnait l'impression de lire un roman pour un lectorat pour lequel je ne fais définitivement pas parti. Quand j’ai vu qu’une adaptation en bande dessinée sortait, j’ai désiré tout de suite m’y pencher pour découvrir enfin cette adolescente dont les jeunes adorent tant ! Chose certaine, je suis tombée tout de suite sous le charme de cette petite bouille.
Aurélie n’est aucunement comme les autres adolescentes. Originale, on pourrait croire qu’elle vient d’une autre planète. D’ailleurs, je trouve qu’elle a un côté un peu lunatique qui lui va comme un gant. Timide de nature, elle côtoie peu de jeunes de son âge et, que dire de la gent masculine… L’on pourrait croire que c’est une peine perdue tellement elle est incapable d’aligner plus [...]

Amy's Diary was not really what I expected and I think that for that reason it brought this rating down for me. What this graphic novel was, was very geared toward a younger audience, and while I normally enjoy that, this time it didn't seem to fit me. It follows a teen and her diary, and her thoughts about love and boys and her friends and is very realistic from what I remember of that time in my life. However the way it was all put together, I didn't really feel for the main character, so while she was having issues, there was no sense of urgency or connection.
The illustration was fun, and the way it was pieced together really gave it the feel of a dairy though, to that was all a big plus. It was very wordy for a graphic novel and I think that more could have been expressed in the images throughout.
Overall this one was not my jam, but if you have a teenage daughter, friend, etc who is fretting about similar issues, and they seem like the world is ending - this may be best fitted for them.

Based on the novels and translated from French. This is the first in a series.
Amy is in middle school. Her dad died a few years ago from a pulmonary embolism; her mom is just starting to date again. Amy is dealing with typical middle school issues like fights with best friends and crushes, doing well (or not) at school, etc.
I liked the mostly realistic graphic style with just a touch of cartoon-y-ness. There was one panel in a pet store where the kittens all got adopted and the mama cat was sad and crying that made me really sad, too. I think middle school students will relate well to Amy and her issues. It was a good story but nothing extraordinary.

I can see the appeal of Amy's Diary for some people, but it was just too cliche and not realistic for me. Don't get me wrong, I knew girls like Amy and Kat growing up, but they we never had the same experiences. Not all teens are filled with angst, watch teen dramas, and eat in bathrooms because they are single. Parts of the story were nice, but overall, it just played into too many stereotypes for my taste.

A peek into the life and thoughts of Amy. A great read for any teenager who feels like they are a bit of an outcast.
The 14 year old protagonist and her friends are a little cliché to me but I am not the target audience. I enjoyed the diary entries themselves more than the graphic novel itself but overall it was a good coming of age tale of teenage angst, marching to the beat of your own drum, young love and friendship.

Amy is a normal teenager with normal teenager problems from best friend drama, and hating boys to falling in love. I enjoyed the actual diary clips the most. I was hoping for more "lessons" but it is just what the title says it is... a diary of a teenage girl. I would definitely read the continuation of the story.

Besides the dated references, this was a cute book. Amy has normal problems, a boy-crazy best friend, and a mom starting to date again. Outside of that weird, uncomfortable hamster rape joke, an all right book for middle schoolers.
