Reviewing a cookbook is a thoroughly new experience for me. As most of you may know, I’m a thriller girl.
Recently contacted by Jordan Hanley at St Martin’s Press, I was offered the opportunity to do just that. Both a bit flattered and anxious to try something completely different, I wholeheartedly agreed to “start cooking!” Here we go!

My husband and I split the cooking duties in our home. (Ok fine…truthfully he cooks more than I do!). Lately, we’ve found ourselves in a dining rut, cranking out the same few dishes over and over.

Lisa Lillien known to all as The Hungry Girl is a rapidly rising star and quite well known! I’ve seen her on Dr. Oz and several other cooking shows on both the Food Network and The Cooking Channel. Must admit, I had never tried one of her dishes before.

Her latest cookbook, Hungry Girl - Simply Six just became our favorite go-to cookbook.

Let’s start with the pictures themselves. Each dish is accompanied by beautifully plated photos that will leave you salivating and wanting to devour it!

As advertised, every recipe is only six ingredients. Are you kidding? Fantastic. And perhaps just as amazing? Every single recipe we’ve tried (so far) has been a winner. Also accompanied by amazing tips along the way.
My husband and I discovered that these recipes act as a great foundation to stand on their own. Allowing us to put on our junior chefs’ hat and experiment with adding something here and there to suit your own tastes.

You’re given the calorie count and all nutritional information as well as your prep and cook times. All recipes are under 375 calories! All are amazing! Bon–appetite!!

Some of the delicious recipes we tried and would recommend were:
EZ BBQ Chicken Quesadilla - our only change was we grilled the chicken breast.
Tropical fish tacos - we added a table spoon of dressing to the coleslaw mix.
Scott’s Nutty Avacado Salmon - yum!! Actually making this one again tonight!
Sweet and Spicy Buffalo Chicken Nuggets (not too spicy)
There are countless post-it’s marking the pages of recipes we still want to try! This book never makes it into my pantry. It is a permanent fixture on my kitchen counter!

Thank you so much to Jordan Hanley at St Martin’s Press and Lisa Lillien for my copy to read, review and continue to use on a daily basis!

A great book!

I found a lot of neat recipes to copy, that work extremely well with my Weight Watchers, including Chocolate Chip cookies!

She provides substitutes - oatmeal instead of flour, etc. that I would have never thought of. I also love the fact that she includes nutritional information, which makes each recipe extremely easy to enter into my WW app.

I love that Author, Lillien provided some great tips, as well, including ways to "spice" your food, besides reaching for the salt shaker.

Fabulous!

Interesting concept, and tons of extra tips, tricks, and suggestions. Cookbook well suited if you need dairy or grain free recipes, and especially if you like peanut butter (I don’t) or zoodles. Planning to try a few recipes, will see how we enjoy them.

Disappointed in the amount of pre-made items used for these recipes. Use pre-made teriyaki sauce, pre-made gravy, etc. The whole reason I need a cookbook is trying to make simple meals from simple ingredients. Most of those pre-made sauces have additives I’m not interested in.

I was also surprised that at least 1/3 of the book is dessert.

It’s a great cookbook. Most everything looks great and like I can get my kids to eat it. I would give it 5 stars but it calls for a lot of low fat ingredients and sugar substitutes. I’d rather clean eating. But it’s easy enough to use the clean ingredients and get a similar outcome, even if it’s a few more calories. Pictures for almost every recipe!

Of all the cookbooks I checked out of the library, this one had the most recipes that appealed to me. Maybe I just went to my mother's school of thought and have a preference for recipes that have--or could have--"easy" or "lazy" in the title. I suppose "simply" qualifies. Come to think of it, maybe this change in descriptor may suggest that we women are being a little easier on ourselves.

But I digress.

These are all doable with their 6 ingredients. Lillien helpfully includes nutritional information so I can see calories, fat, protein, and fiber. I may actually buy one of these.

Nice book! This is a lot more than a basic book of recipes. Lillien includes many tips and techniques using some of the most popular methods: Instant Pot, sheet pans, and more. She offers a LOT of practical tips to make cooking easier. Instead of just encouraging readers to make a recipe, she helps prepare readers to take control of their own food preparation. I love that she also provide WW Freestyle points for the recipes on her website. I am very happy that I purchased this book!

There were so many good ideas and pictures that deserved 4 stars. The type of book this is I don’t know if I agree with. Sweetener substitute and the like, I am more of the natural route, so with that being said I did find recipes that I would make. This book is worth a look see.

Eh. There is nothing new or exciting here. Sure, some recipes look good, but nothing you can’t find for free on the internet.

I picked this book as a prize in an adult reading challenge based on the title and a quick glance at the photos- did not realize it was a diet book! This one is affiliated with Weight Watchers and you can find the point values for any of the recipes on the Hungry Girl website. I think if I were on this particular diet I’d find the variety of foods in this book very exciting. It is not for people cooking for a family though as the recipes are small portions and oftentimes only 1-2 servings. Also I was limited in what I could make because I’m not into zero calorie sweeteners or putting protein powder in my food.

Here’s what I made that didn’t use those ingredients!
🍎 Open-Faced Apple S’mores- these were really good! I would be annoyed if I were doing points because there’s no way the example photo used as little chocolate as the recipe states. But if you copy the photo, delicious. Loved the torched marshmallows.
🍗 EZ Faux-Fried Chicken Strips- these were weird. Fat-free Greek yogurt is not good baked onto chicken.
🍊 Orange Chicken- we liked this chicken! I especially enjoyed my daughter’s description of cauliflower rice- “it looks like rice, but tastes like water.”
🧀 EZ BBQ Chicken Quesadilla- favorite! Loved all the flavors in this. Like a classic bbq chicken pizza in a tortilla!
🍤 Blackened Shrimp Enchiladas- these were fine. Did not satisfy my enchilada craving. They were missing something…

I love Lillien's books - her tone is great, like talking to a friend who's obsesses with food AND with dieting. These recipes are quick and generally include ingredients you probably have around the house. In some cases, I found them to be almost too streamlined - I thought the chicken chili could use a little more depth. But overall, if you want to get a healthy meal together in 30 minutes or less, this is your go-to. Some of the meat and chicken recipes are variations from other books (like Hungry Girlfredo) - I thought her Big Book had more to offer for those proteins. This book really shines in the breakfast chapters - her oats and egg recipes are super.

A lot of the portions here are for one or two people, but you could easily double for a family. She still uses artificial sweetener (I realize there are natural sources for zero calorie sweeteners, but I dont' trust them), but otherwise the recipes include non-diet 'regular' food. The book has full nutrition info for everything.

A great everyday resource.

I loved this cookbook. It is so well organized. There are calorie counts for every recipe, and pictures accompany most. The recipes are listed in a variety of ways to help the busy cook: 15 minutes prep, 30 minutes prep, easy veg, make in instant pot, etc.

There are useful keys of how to make cauliflower rice, how to make zoodles, how to make spice blends etc. easily.

The only downside is that the book is bulky and heavy. I read the paper, but I have it on my Kindle to be useful in the kitchen.

I took this out of the library on a friend's recommendation. Super simple tasty sounding healthy recipes. Things that I wouldn't have come up with on my own. I bookmarked more than 10 recipes and decided to buy it which is unusual for me, cookbooks aren't my thing but ...5 bucks later, here we are. Possibly because, a few weeks ago, I spent over an hour googling for a simple mushroom gravy recipe then made a super gross mushroom gravy. Never again!

I found about twenty recipes that I’d like to try. Mostly in the breakfast and dessert sections I loved the way this book was organized. I loved the font, the pictures and the advice. I love the simplicity of the recipes. Very doable.

I've always wanted to read a cookbook from hungry girl. But maybe this one isn't the best. Her meals are simple. Just a few ingredients or less. But none of the recipes caught my eye or were already staple variations in my home
