Vincent Book One: Guide to Love, Magic, and RPG

Rate this book
It's been some time since Vincent has had a good day. Sitting on the bus, he still doesn't know that his life is about to change. Forever. At that moment, outside the bus, Lady lets a little smile escape when recalling an anecdote about tomatoes. Vincent sees the smile and his world turns upside down. Now, armed with his nerdy RPG friends(not counting Bu, who is like a sister to Vincent and full of solid wisdom), an impressive magic act, and a insatiable love of roast beef sandwiches (no pickles, Vincent hates pickles), he must learn how to navigate his first non-platonic love and what may happen if things don't go as planned (as they often do in the life of Vincent).

5 Stars! I need the next book now!
This book is for Reading Rush challenge for the prompt: A book read in the same spot the entire time (I woke up early on 26th and read this book in bed).

I'd love to thank Vitor Cafaggi, Papercutz and NetGalley for this amazing book in exchange for an honest review.

This book is the most accurate and beautiful graphic novel out there! It's considered the best graphic novel in Brazil! I'm glad that the series is going to be translated in English! The second one just came out this month!

The story is about Vincent, a cute teenager dog that falls in love with Lady, a gorgeous lioness. They meet in a bus and he tries to talk with her and finds out some stuff about her. He falls instantly in love with her, but because he assumed she also liked him, he tries to go further, only finding out that she has somebody else. He then spills his sorrow to his best female friend, Bu, a cute monkey that is also his collegue in high-school.

He meets his male friends and they play RPG. After a while, Vincent meets another girl, Princess, a cute koala that seems to be into him. But this time he plays safe, asking her if she has a boyfriend, and she hasn't. But even though they start dating, kissing and holding hands and he asks her to be his girlfriend, she always responds with: "Let's not hurry up."

Things get worse when they go out and meet Lady and Vincent realizes that he still likes her very much. And when he ends up dating both of them, Princess is ready to be his girlfriend. But from here you can realize how messed up the situation gets, so now he has to take matter in his own hands and so he decides to tell them both that he likes them and he wants to spend some time alone and see what's best for him.

I won't continue with this because there are spoilers, but trust me when I say that nothing is what it seems to be. The story is much more complex and I loved it because it has humor and relatable facts.

Like I said, I need the next book now!! Do yourself a favor and read the first book! I promise you will not regret this decision!

*I received this book in exchange for my honest review*

One day on the bus Vincent meets a girl named Lady. He instantly falls for her. With the help of his RPG playng friends and best friend Bu, he learns to navigate his new feelings.

The story line is simplistic and the cast of quirky characters are fun to read about through out this story. Vincent was adorable and I loved watching him try to figure out what to do about Lady and Princess. I thought his relationship with Bu was cute and I liked how he tried to follow her advice but ultimately came to his own conclusions in the end.

I recently read Vincent book one which was given to me as an ebook ARC on NetGalley. I had never heard of this book before but I really enjoy reading graphic novels and this one looked so cute!

SPOILERS AHEAD

Vincent is the story of a guy named Vincent who is sitting on the bus one day when he sees a girl. This girl happens to be named Lady and he will spend the next few weeks obsessing over her and trying to get to know her/ land a date with her. However, once Vincent has achieved the goal of getting to know her a little bit he gets invited to her birthday where she gets back together with her boyfriend, and Vincent is crushed forever. That is until he meets Princess, another girl but this time is into him too! They go on a few dates and Vincent is able to let go of his thoughts of Lady by writing a letter to her. However, Lady breaks up with her boyfriend again and decides that she would like to date Vincent. Now Vincent has a problem, does he stay dating Princess? Does he date Lady? Does he tell Princess about what has been happening with Lady?

This was a cute graphic novel with the characters drawn as animals (which made it all the more adorable). I enjoyed the storyline of Vincent, Lady, and Princess however I do not know if I will read on. I think for me about halfway in I knew what Vincent was going to chose. I gave this book three stars on Goodreads (I could not actually find this one on Goodreads but I could find the Spanish one)!

'Vincent Book One: Guide to Love, Magic, and RPG' by Vitor Cafaggi is a collection of comic strips about a lovelorn character with tough choices to make.

Vincent rides the bus everyday and his life seems to be the same, until one day, he meets Lady. Instantly, he falls in love and dreams of a life with Lady. The problem is that she has a boyfriend. Now Vincent is crushed. That is until he meets Princess on the bus. Things are complicated by Vincent getting advice from his D&D group.

These are cute comics that tell a cute story. I like the characters and the situations. I look forward to reading more about Vincent.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Papercutz and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

"Vincent - Book 1 a guide to love, magic and RPG" was published by Brazilian comic artist Vitor Cafaggi during the 2011 International Comics Festival (FIQ 2011) in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The comic brings together 72 strips first released in the O Globo newspaper and which later formed the first volume of a series of 6 comics about a cute, clumsy and very charming little dog who is looking for the love of his life.

Vincent is shy and doesn't have much social skills, especially with the girls, which leaves the dog in complicated and funny situations, but which is very close to the reality of teenagers who are starting their love life. Because of the "people like us" way it's easy to identify with Vincent and He is a lot of fun and for me it was a bit nostalgic. In addition to Vincent we meet his friends, best friend and suitors, each character is an animal full of personality.

It is important to highlight Cafaggi's outstanding trait, which gives dynamism and a charming charisma to our main character, in addition to the other little animals that are part of history and pass through Valente's life. I liked the idea of anthropomorphizing the characters, made everything more delicate and simple, is there anything cuter than a puppy in love with a panda bear?

But the script is definitely the strong point of the series, full of humor and teenage drama in the right measure, which made me buy all the remaining volumes, I've already read two volumes and I can't wait to read the rest. It is difficult not to identify with Valente's feelings, all that excitement, insecurity, illusion, platonic love, expectations, frustration and sadness that were already present to a greater or lesser degree in some phase of our lives.

And with Vincent we learn that there's nothing wrong with showing your feelings, even if they aren't reciprocated in the expected way. Vitor, in addition to introducing Vincent to the Brazilian public, in 2019 launched the adventures of the flirting dog in the american version by the Super Genius label of the publisher PaperCutz.

Vincent is a relatable teen who is just learning how to deal with all the new teen issues that are popping up in his life. I can see this being a draw for older readers of Diary of a Wimpy kid because Vincent and Greg seem to have a lot in common. They are both awkward, they both have a good friend or two, and they both appeal to audiences younger than they are.

Let's hit on that last point. Although the content of this book makes me think it would be for a teen reader, I imagine 4th-6th graders would enjoy this book best. Vincent being an adorable puppy is part of it, but the tone of the book reads young which is the biggest part of it.

Because the book is about Vincent imagining himself in love with Lady, this becomes a little awkward because most 5th graders don't want to read about romance, especially 5th grade boys.

I think this is, unfortunately, a book that lost some of its magic in translation. Possibly this young feeling that I get as a reader has to do with cultural differences - do teens in Spain read more gentle type books? I don't know the answer to this question, but I'm curious because I'm not sure who in an American audience this book appeals to.

Thank-you to Net Galley for the review copy of this book. Options are all my own.

Three and a half stars.

For a book built out of daily strips from a Brazilian newspaper, about a lad struggling to work out which of two girlfriends he should concentrate on as his first relationship, this is actually surprisingly good. Yes it's overly wordy at times, a little too repetitive, and the voice-over a little too arch, but it's entertaining. I'm not sure I bought the whole thing as true-to-life, for the whole manner in which both affairs are conveniently on-again-off-again types rang a little false. But there's just enough here that's intriguing and fun. Why is his best friend dating a giraffe, is one of the better gags to come from the anthropomorphised characters, and the whole has a reasonable level of cuteness. Considering this isn't normally my kind of thing, I actually quite enjoyed my time reading it.

This is a really fun comic. A compilation of comics strips. The illustration and format are really enjoyable.

The romance couldn't be more cliché, but I didn't care. I still loved the story (although eye-roll-worthy at times) and enjoyed the characters. Vincent is someone a lot of people could relate to. The story did not just focus on the romance aspect, but also on friendship. There are plenty of strips showing Vincent hanging out with his friends. It also shows that close friendship between the opposite sexes is possible.

I also love how this book showed that love can be chaotic and how friendship could serve as a safe haven.

I just hope that there were more RPG aspect in this story. Like a parallel or something.

This was a cute story dealing with relationships. Definitely for younger audience as it outlines emotional upheavals relating to love. The characters were actually animals, which made it even cuter and, at times, funnier. The artwork was beautiful and made me want to look at the pictures more so than the text. Definitely a great book for young readers who will be able to relate to Vincent as he ponders what steps he should undertake when it comes to the matter of his heart: to be with Lady or Princess?

Thank you NetGalley and publisher for this eARC. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I didn't care for this book. I felt that it went by very slowly, and I was honestly relieved when it ended. I'm sure that many people will like it, but it just wasn't for me. The illustrations are cute, but I didn't like the bland coloring. The story didn't hold my attention at all. It basically follows Vincent through his romantic life. Except for being drawn well, I didn't care about any of the characters or what was happening to them. This is one of the few graphic novels I've read that I just didn't take to. (This book was from Netgalley).

I hear some people would rather skip this than read on through it. But that doesn't mean people can't enjoy it. I myself find this story to be more like a long introduction. Vincent is a pretty good story about dealing with everyday life. I have friends who play tabletop games. They would certainly love this series. As for me, I would've like something more along the lines of actually playing a game with Vincent. But not everything can be a You Are Deadpool.

Final grade: 3.5

This was a super cute read about a sweet doggo named Vincent, who keeps falling love. First with Lady, who ends up getting back together with her ex-boyfriend and then with Princess, who wants to take a break from love. These quasi-romances play out in a fun way as Vincent daydreams, freaks out and reserves a reality dose from his best friend.

This is such a cute graphic novel. A dog named Vincent navigated the ups and downs of love and relationships. And for some reason since our lover boy is a dog, he reminded me of my fur-baby, Turbo, even if both of them are of different breeds. It just made me chuckle at times at the thought of Turbo falling in love which is absolutely adorable. 😁💖

It's a quick and light read.

Usually, I don't like comics that are cute like this one, but I liked this. Full of cliché but still enjoyable. Love, friends, typical adolescent problems. I would write more to this but finals time, woohoo *annoyed tone*.

Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read a digital copy of this book in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own.

Cute illustrations, but the story line was too simplistic and overused for me to hold interest in it. I also didn't connect with the characters.

This is a cute middle/high school book about what it's like to be a little shy/nerdy and look for love. The art is very cute, I liked the use of color, and the characters are very likeable. I would recommend this graphic novel for someone who is starting to be interested in graphic novels/comics.

Charming read. I don't find Vincent as sympathetic as he is meant to be perhaps. This feels very autobiographical. My favourite strips are the parallel ones where Cafaggi shows both the actual dialogue and the hidden meaning/thoughts behind the scenes.

Vincent Book One is a cute idea about a teenager learning about love. The illustrations are nice, but the story just drags on and on and on. I like the idea, but for me, the book didn't deliver.

I got 22 pages in. It looks cute on the surface, but underneath it’s just Nice Guy toxic masculinity and I don’t have patience for this anymore.
