Declan Sinclair is a Highlander who believes his dreams never lie. When he spots Caya at a public house, he knows instantly she is the woman in his dreams—his future wife. Though her brother had promised never to gamble again, he engages Declan in a card game—and the prize is the lovely Caya.

Caya Pendarvis has no time for childish things like dreams or fairy-tales or love. She’s the sacrificial lamb on her way to the far north of Scotland to wed a wealthy merchant in exchange for settling her brother’s gambling debts.

Winning at cards is one of the many things Declan Sinclair does well. Unfortunately, the ability to court a woman—a talent he lacks—is the only skill he desperately needs to win Caya’s heart.

This is a highly entertaining read, a brilliant historical story with humour, suspense and romance, one that was a real page turner that I really enjoyed and have no hesitation in highly recommending. It is the second book in a series and I haven't read the first but still found this a superb read and have to say it works well as a standalone.

Caya Pendarvis has been brought to Scotland by her brother who has arranged for her to marry someone she's never met, a sailor who has agreed to pay him enough to settle his gambling debts. They stay in a Inn to await the arrival of her husband to be and, whilst dining there one of the other diners keeps looking at her and is obviously discussing her with his two compatriots. They both find the other attractive, but haven't even spoken. The man is Declan Sinclair, a Highlander who has dreams which usually foretell what will happen - and little does she know that she has featured in his recent dreams, dreams in which she becomes his wife!

When she retires for the night, her brother challenges the three Highlanders to a game of cards. He accrues a decent pot but then loses it all. Desperate, he gambles his sister - and Declan wins. Now, winning Caya like this was easy but now he needs to win her heart and this is something he has no experience of, he's going to need to learn to court Caya for his dreams to come true. However, what will her brother do when her husband to be turns up to collect his bride? How will he repay his debts now?

My advice is go grab yourself a copy of this book and get ready for a story with a plethora of great characters, plenty of action, full of twists and turns, accusations of witchcraft, kidnapping, whisky, peril and so much more! There's even another rival for Caya's hand in marriage! There are plenty of misunderstandings and danger along their journey to their HEA and Declan is an endearing, hard working, reticent but determined suitor and a real sweetheart, too. I'll definitely be looking out for more by this talented author in future!

I requested and was given a copy of this novel, via NetGalley, with no obligation. This is my honest review of the book after choosing to read it.

Declan has a dream of marrying a woman with yellow hair. He sees Caya and is convinced Caya is the woman in his dreams. He is determined to marry her and wins Caya in a card game with her abusive brother Jack. Declan knows it's wrong, but he determines that leaving Caya in her brother's care is worse. Once Declan and Caya reach his clan, Laird John takes Caya into his protection because of her situation. Laird John is outraged Declan won Caya in a card game. Frustration and disappointment ensue as John forbids Declan to get marry, to be alone with, or court Caya. Declan's reactions to all this are hilarious. Now the vicar James has Caya in his sights for marriage too and Declan fears his dreams of his bride with yellow hair will never comes true. Caya is a godfearing woman and hates the fact that Declan's runs whiskey. This makes them opposites but the intense attraction is mutual. What kept me entertained was how Declan becomes frustrated with the Vicar and the fact that has no idea how to court a woman. He knows what he wants and is determined to make it happen against all the twists and turns. I thought that was sweet and funny. Declan is not a good communicator and unsure of how to win Caya's affections but his feelings are real and I found his dialogue hilarous. This was sweet romance with enough twists and frustration to keep me interested.
I loved this one on audible. The narration made this a five for me. Ruth Urquhart is brillant and does well with male voices. Her accents are so good, she didn't distract me like other female readers when she speaks male dialogue. I recomend the audible because the voices really bring the characters to life. I like Declan, a lanky good looking Scot who although limited in his experience with women, knows what he wants and takes action to make things happen, even building a house with a woman's bath for his future bride. Any man who goes through all that trouble to get his woman should make a woman swoon. It's very rare to have a romance where the H is inexperienced yet very much an alpha, a soldier, and sure of what he wants. What's funny is all the obstacles Declan runs into and how he reacts when thwarted and how he comes to the rescue being a true hero.

This is the second book in The Highlanders or Balforss series. I didn't read the first one, but had no trouble reading this book and following the story. I will go back and read the first story just because I enjoyed this one so much. It is the story of Declan Sinclair, the nephew of Laird John of Balforss. He has dreams and they come true. He has dreamed about the woman he will marry, now he just has to find her. While in Wick, Scotland, Declan and his two cousins stop at a local inn. From across the room, Declan sees his wife. As the evening progresses and Caya has retired for the evening, Jack Pendarvis challenges the highlanders to a card game. By the end of the night, Declan has all Jack's money, his mother's ring and Caya's hand. Now Caya Pendarvis, is a lovely yet shy woman from Cornwall. Her brother has betrothed her to a herring business man in exchange for enough money to pay off his gambling debts. When he tries to sneak out of the Inn in the middle of the night with his sister, the highlanders are waiting. Caya agrees to go with them. However, what will her brother do when her husband to be turns up to collect his bride? How will he repay his debts now?

This is a highly entertaining read, a brilliant historical story with humour, suspense and romance. There is also plenty of action, several twists and turns, accusations of witchcraft, kidnapping, whisky, danger and more. There's even another rival for Caya's hand in marriage. Don't worry, it does not become a love triangle. I enjoyed the strength of the women of Balforss and the backbone that Caya develops while living with the Laird. The men may be warriors, but they are gentle and loving as well. Declan is very persistent and it pays off eventually. Family means everything to them. I read this book very quickly and enjoyed it much more than I expected. I do not usually read historical romances, but this was recommended by a blogger I follow and she was not wrong. Get yourself a copy of the first two books in this series and enjoy them before the third one comes out. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley.

Betting the Scot by Jennifer Trethewey is book Two in The Highlanders of Balforss series. This is the story of Declan Sinclair and Caya Pendarvis. I have read the previous book but feel this is easily a standalone book.
Caya brother is a gambler and drinks a lot and not all that caring to his sister is seems. Caya has settled into the understanding that her brother will be marring her off so that he can settle his debts. But then he gambles her away to Declan. Declan has the ability to see things in his dreams and he has always seen the women he is to marry. When he sees Caya he knows she is the women he been waiting for. Declan does give Caya the choice to choose to go with him and she does.
Caya and Declan does have some misunderstanding along the way. Declan doesn't really know how to court a women but he is the sweetest hero there is!
Loved having this book and reading their story.

TSTL female lead. Puts herself and everybody in danger from the first chapter to the last, for no good reason.

Only reason hero wants her is because he dreamt of her.

Betting the Scot is the second book in The Highlanders of Balforss series by Jennifer Trethewey. I did read and enjoy the first book in this series, Tying the Scot, but think that each book can be enjoyed on its own.

Betting the Scot is a multi layered romance that catches the attention, and keeps it through out the entire read. I liked the set up with Caya, and her brother. I also like that while Declan is far from poor, neither Declan or Caya are gentry, which is a nice change of pace in historical romance. So often the main players are Dukes, or other lords and ladies, so while Declan is related to the head of his clan he is not exactly royalty. I like that Declan is certain Caya is to be his wife, but is so lost and uncertain about how to go about making it happen. Caya is at a loss after her brother sells her, them gambles her away. She still loves him, and wants to help him, but knows that he has greed and weaknesses that are dangerous. I enjoyed getting Declan's side of the story for most of the book, and liked his honor and kindness, that is not always obvious to those around him. I will admit that I was annoyed with Caya for trusting her brother after all he had done, and for not fully confiding in Declan.I though Declan was a complex and sympathetic character, and I was rooting for him through the entire book. I found Caya to be a little less likable, she often annoyed me in her own way, but I never hated her. I think if she had trusted Declan more, and her brother less, I would have enjoyed the book even more. The danger was well done, and the drama crafted with a satisfying conclusion. I loved getting to see Peter in action again, after loving his character in the previous book, although those that did not already know him will still find this young secondary characters to be fabulous. I also liked getting a hint as to who might be next while not leaving so many open questions that I was frustrated.
Betting the Scot is a well written historical romance with plenty of twists and turns. I enjoyed the characters and their depth, and my only complaint is that sometimes I feel like there might be one too many twists that could be replaced with conversation to ease communication issues rather than life or death danger turning the tide.

I'm new the this genre and this book just bowled me over. I loved the story. The plot wound and twisted it's way from a slimy brother selling is sister, only to lose her in a a game of cards to the Scot, Declan. Caya is an innocent. She knows her brother's got problems and not just with gambling.
Declan has dreams, many of which come true and he's been dreaming about this woman he knows he's to marry, but never sees her face. But that night in the pub when he sees her, her back first he knows. When she turns to look at him, he knows. That's why he played cards with the brother, along with his anger of any man who'd wager his sister in a card game.
Declan and his two cousins make the long journey back home to the northern coast with Caya in tow.
She's fearful but not so much. There's much she doesn't understand. What she's met with when they arrive back in Declan's uncle telling him she's to stay with them, until such time as whomever deems them fit to marry if at all. Declan is upset but has no choice but to go along.
This book has so many plot twists, you have to play attention to keep up. Things seem to being going along ok until Caya's no good brother shows up again only to set a chain of events in motion that shift the whole story. It was great! I loved it all. The kilt scene... wait for it. All the secondary characters were great. I hope we'll see another book with Declan's cousin and Virginia.
This one is a winner. Truly a story of romance.

The Highlands of Scotland, 1817 Can a man really see his future bride in a dream? He can if he is Declan Sinclair whose dreams always come true and his clansmen know it. Declan has been dreaming of a lass that will be his bride for three years but the dreams have started to come closer together. Sitting in a tavern with his cousins he looks over and sees Caya Pendarvis, the girl of his dreams down to her yellow hair!! What Declan does not know is that she is with her brother Jack ,who has already sold her off to a merchant to pay his gambling debts and they are waiting to meet her betrothed the next day. Caya and Declan lock eyes several times and there seems to be a spark. As Caya goes up to her room for bed, Declan walks over to Jack and introduces himself. Well one thing leads to another and a card game ensues with the prize being beautiful Caya! How could Jack lose the game when Caya is already promised to another! Of course Declan wins! When Caya finds out what happened, Declan gives her a choice of waiting to marry her merchant or go with Declan to his home. She does pick him but Declan intends to woo her so she will want to be his wife. I loved this story with the adventure and the braw hero who is really a little shy but has a wonderful smile with a twinkle in his eye. Can Declan win Caya who only wants to be loved for herself and feel worth something? Jennifer Trethewey again tells a wonderful story of two people who were meant to be. I mean it is not everyday a man dreams about his future wife and that dream comes true!!

It's a great story, which starts with a dream and ends with it coming true. I quite enjoyed it, it's entertaining and thrilling. I loved the story as well as the characters. Also I thing the ending was just perfect.
Declan's dreams often come true. So when he dreams about his wife he just starts preparing to get married soon. Then quite by chance he met the woman of his dreams, however, things get complicated because of her brother and their circumstances but maybe things will work out for them.
Caya is tired of taking care of her brother so when a handsome Scot offers his help she is more than willing to take it. She will finally get a chance to have someone who takes care of her. Although, she does not trust him entirely but she is willing to bet on him.
I think this book is perfect for historical fiction lovers. It's well-written and keeps you intrigued.
P.S. I received a complementary copy of this book.

Betting the Scot by Jennifer Trethewey is an historical romance, which takes place in the Scottish Highlands. The second of Trethewey's Highlanders of Balforss series, Betting the Scot can be read as a stand alone book, as well.

Declan Sinclair has a reputation for his dreams coming true. So when he sees the woman of his dreams at a public house, he knows he must save her. She is about to be sold into a cruel marriage so her brother can satisfy his debts. Complications arise when the woman, Caya, wants to protect her brother from himself. Despite his gambling debts and drunkenness, she feels guilt in leaving her brother behind for a better life with a family who has grown to love her.

Alex and Magnus return in this story, as well as Laird John, Flora, Lucy, and Peter. There are 341 pages. If you love Scottish tales, and some history to your romantic reading, I highly recommend Betting the Scot.

I am voluntarily submitting my honest review after receiving an ARC of this ebook via NetGalley.

Betting the Scot is the second in the Highlanders of Balforss series. I did not read the first book in the series, but had no trouble following the plot of this second installment. That said, perhaps I might have enjoyed this book had I read Lucy and Alex's story first. Despite an interesting story line, likable characters and an enchanting setting, this was not one of the better novels I have read. The main problem is in the story's pacing. After a promising start, the middle of the story really drags, and then rushes on to a fast and furious finish. Perhaps a little less dithering about whether Declan and Caya should or should not be courting and more time spent getting to know each other's backgrounds would make the middle more interesting.

I was interested in this book because in book 1, Declan was said to be a follower of the ‘old gods’, and I wanted to see how Trethewey depicted that. But unfortunately, that wasn’t really an aspect of his character. He’s kind of an in-between religious/spiritual person. But I felt like we actually got more of his spirituality in book 1, where he’s looking for signs all around. Here he mentions it so briefly, but it should be such a big part of him that it was oddly missing.

Caya was childish and too easily manipulated to be likable.

Seems to be written on a middle school level (except for the sex scenes). It didn't hold me attention; I mostly skimmed it. It had a very good premise, though - winning your future wife through gambling after dreaming about her.

Thought she spots the handsome Scot Declan right away. He keeps looking at her and she has her own wicked thought about this Scottish stranger.

In the second book of the highlander of Balforss, Jennifer Trethewey, pens a fast-paced,romantic, adventure with non-stop-action. It has all the elements historical-romance-readers love! This includes a swoon worthy hero you can’t help but love! Declan’s is shy, innocent, unsure of himself, smart, and gorgeous with beautiful big brown eyes. Plus he had a very special gift where he can predict the future. He just has had very little experience with women and does not know how to woo or the right words to say to a woman. Kaya like most women just wants to be loved and cared for. Yet there are many bumps in the road for these two. Will they two opposites find a common denominator in the road of love? Sometimes perhaps dreams do come true!

This is the second book, in this fast paced riveting series-(The Highlanders of Balforrs). The setting is beautiful, dialogue is amazing, plotting is brilliant and the characters are absolutely phenomenal. I love Declan’s family Uncle John, Aunt Flora, his sister Margaret and her husband Hamish. In addition his cousins Magnus, Ian and young Peter. Plus I love being revisited by Alex and Lucy, the heroes of “Tying the Scot,” book 1 of this exhilarating series.

This tale is filled with romantic adventure, mystery, premonition, self esteem issues, insecurities, suspense, betrayal, devastation, treachery, sorrow, heartbreak, human trafficking, faith, joy, trust, love, and so much more. I really enjoyed this book, Declan Sinclair is one of the sweetest heroes I have read in a really long time - I just loved him! Caya was a good heroine, but I really questioned her intelligence on more than one occasion.

Declan has dreams that predict future events, so when he had a dream of a woman in a field of daisies, he knew she was the woman he would marry. He has been preparing to meet her for the last three years. He has started a distillery so he can support her, built a house for them to live in and has kept himself for her. When in Wick to pick up a tub for his then unknown wives boudoir - he sees her and instantly knows that she is his. He wonders how he will be able to meet her and her brother, Jack solves that problem. He joins Declan and his cousins after Caya retires for the night - Jack figures the Scots are easy pickings and proposes a game of cards - he loses everything and in desperation, he wagers Caya hand in marriage and loses to Declan.

Caya is in Wick with her brother to marry, her brother was deep in debt and arranged a match for her with a wealthy ship captain. Mr. O'Malley will pay off Jack's debts in exchange for marriage to Caya. She is not happy, but she can't bear to see Jack thrown in debtors prison, so she agrees. Caya has always taken care of Jack and cleaned up his messes, so this act is nothing new to her and he has promised that he is done with gambling. So she is surprised the next morning to be woken by Jack and told they have to leave the inn. When the go outside, she learns the awful truth, her brother lost her in a card game. Hurt and angry, she leave with Declan - he gave her the choice, he will marry her or if she wants, she can stay with her brother. She chooses Declan.

They travel to Balforss, where Declan's uncle is Laird. Laird John refuses to let them marry or even court, until he feels enough time has passed. Declan is not happy, but he abides by his uncles wishes. The Sinclairs take Caya in and for the first time in many years, she feels loved, safe and part of a family. She wants to marry Declan, but will not go against Laird John's decree. She is still smarting over her brother's betrayal and needs time to heal. She settles in to life at Balforss and it seems like Declan and she are on a fast track to HEA - but what fun would that be?

The book is well written, but there are some glaring historical errors, which are needed to make the plot work, but were just really, really annoying to me. The story moves right along and has more than one twist, really vile villains, jealousy, misunderstandings, pirates, whiskey, accusations of witchcraft, cameos with Alex, Magnus & Lucy, more than one laugh out loud scene, a couple of warmish love scenes, kidnapping, heartbreak and a bit of betrayal before Declan can claim Caya as his own.

This is the second book in the series, but it could be read as a stand alone title with no problems, I actually liked this book better than the first book and I am really looking forward to Magnus' story!

Betting the Scot is the second book in the Highlanders of Balforss series by Jennifer Trethewey. I absolutely loved this book, Declan and Caya are wonderful characters, and they made a lovely couple.

Betting the Scot is Declan’s story. Declan was introduced in the first book Tying the Scot as a cousin to the main character, Alex Sinclair. He is a former warrior and a dreamer. A dreamer whose dreams often come true. Declan has dreamed, with amazing clarity, about his future wife. When he sees Caya in a tavern, he knows she is the woman of his dreams – literally. What follows is starts a chain of events that eventually leads to the dramatic climax of the book.

Straightforward, you may think. Actually, not so much. It kept me guessing just what was going to be the climactic event of this book. So many things happen, and one in particular (no spoilers) has serious ramifications for the time period in which the book is set. This chain of events kept you turning the pages just to see what would happen next. Poor Declan and Caya are certainly put through the wringer and made to work for their HEA.

I loved Declan from when he was introduced in Tying the Scot, and I was thrilled to learn that he would star in the second novel. Like his family, he is a tough as nails warrior, but his precognizance gives him a softer edge, his dreams bring out his emotional side, and you spend a lot of the book just wanting to give him a hug! To be fair though, he tends to rely on the accuracy of his dreams, and this leads to a few frustrating situations where you feel like slapping him up the head and telling him to open his eyes! Caya is perfect for him. She is soft and loving. Her life up until meeting Declan has been less than pleasant, and it has made her vulnerable and insecure. She needs to rebuild her confidence, and the family of Balforss are just the people to help her.

I loved Betting the Scot, I absorbed it in a day, I just couldn’t put it down. I can’t wait until the third book in the series to see who will get their HEA next. There are hints as to who is next at the end of the story, but this author has ensured I don’t take anything for granted!

It is possible to read and enjoy Betting the Scot without reading the first book , Tying the Scot; but honestly, I wouldn’t recommend it. There is just so much backstory that you would miss out on by not reading the first book. Betting the Scot follows on from the first book, and it wouldn’t have been such a rich experience without reading the first book.

I can’t recommend Betting the Scot by Jennifer Trethewey highly enough. It is perfect for anyone who enjoys historical romances with strong men, and women who are their match.

I loved this book by Jennifer Trethewey. The characters all have their own unique personalities. Trethewey, using lots of snappy, engaging dialogue, portrays how each character interacts with other characters in their own unique ways. Trethewey characters are so relatable because their behaviors are so realistic. The plot is great. The author weaves interesting complications into the plot as the main story line escalates, and I was excited to keep turning the pages. Trethewey such a good story teller. The characters and the settings come to life in my imagination. The touches of humor and irony and history in The Highlanders of Balforss Books are so enjoyable that even though, I'm excited to find out what's going to happen, I read carefully because I don't want to miss any of the enjoyment and wonderful writing along the way. I keep trying to decide which is my favorite character: Magnus, Alex, Iain, or Declan, but I love whichever one is talking and walking and stealing the scene! But the best thing about Tretheway's books are the strong-minded, independent, and interesting female characters: Caya, Lucy, Virginia, and Lousia. Trethewey delivers on the supporting characters too, making sure they are just as engaging and intriguing when they are part of the story.

(Declan & Caya): I liked this book better than the first. Declan is Alex's cousin, the one who has visions in his dreams. He's recently dreamed of his wife so the book starts with the cousins on a mission to find her. Caya is traveling with her brother who had made arrangements for her to marry a "fish merchant". They are in the same tavern as Declan and after Caya goes to bed her brother gambles away all the money they have left. In an attempt to win it back, he bets Caya's hand in marriage. When she finds out, she is not happy but Declan offers her the choice to come with him or stay with her brother. In Balforss, Laird Jon is not happy with the turn of events. He takes Caya under his wing and stops all ideas of marriage. This book is not an instant romance, it's a slow build and a slow burn. In the meantime, danger and drama unfolds and Caya's brother is not finished with Declan. We get a chance to see little Peter again and he is doing much better since his illness. Lucy and Alex are still a major part of the book and they help Declan and Caya move through their courtship. There is a lot of miscommunication that was a little annoying but that is just the sign of the times. Other than that, really good story.

Second book of four in the highly entertaining The Highlanders of Balforss. This book is about Declan Sinclair a cousin of Luke in the first book. Declan is renowned amongst his family as having dreams that always come true. He spots a young lady Caya and instantly recognises her and the woman in his dreams who is to become his future wife. Caya Pendarvis is led to believe that she being taken by her brother to Scotland to marry a wealthy ship owner in lieu of payment so that he can settle his gambling debts. Caya had only promised to marry this man because her brother promised here that he would never gamble again if she married him. They stopped off for an overnight stay on route breaking up their journey. Cays brother ends up in a card game with Declan and his cousins and ends up losing his money resulting in him offering his sister as the prize if he loses one last game. This ends up with Declan who is not well verses in the act of courtship and the ups and downs of the flourishing relationship with Caya is very entertaining with lots of thrills, involving kidnap, piracy that has you gripped right to the end of the book, You'll love it.

Both this and the first book have heroines who are absolute ninnies. Which is kind of disappointing- if a book is going to take place in a time where women have zero privileges, power, or rights, I’d hope they’d at least be written to be witty, intelligent, brave, etc. but Kaiya was just so irritating, fickle, and silly. The story overall is pretty entertaining given the fight scenes, pirates, smuggling, sword fights, and general historical context. But the characters development of the women is lackluster. Hoping the next few are better.

Where's the heat? I ended up DNFing the book, because I was afraid it might end up being a sweet romance... not sure, as I did not finish. The main guy felt young. Really young. Not a man at all. There was nothing in particular that put me off, I simply didn't end up wanting to finish the book. There was no tension between the characters. It was a la-de-dah. Take me where you will and we will be happy.

Meh. I was hesitant after seeing the cheesy cover, but we all know the old saying... I found the characters to be underdeveloped and the dialouge a bit redundant. [Generous 2 stars, because the phrase, "Stick your finger up my arse!" repeatedly had me giggling to myself.]

Admittedly, I'm picky when it comes to the romance genre. If you need cotton candy for the brain, you'll probably enjoy this read.

Me Too

I also love Scotland and men in kilts. Though I will never go to Scotland, I look forward to reading your books. Just finished Betting the Scot and now just purchased book 1 and prepurchased book 3. Wonderful story. Going to save book 1 for the weekend while getting cozy and warm.

This was was better than the first, Tying the Scot, in that it didn't seem to be as much a take-off on Outlander. The two main characters were different, their stories were from a far different angle. The series still reads as if Outlander and Bridgerton had a lovechild 🤣 but the premise and plot of this are a bit more original. A fast read!

I might have gone 3 stars but there were so many times I found myself screaming at my Audible wanting it to either stop or move along faster....I didn't love book 1 but I decided to go for book 2, and i MAY try book 3 but not sure. Know this isn't saying much about the story but it is hard to read many parts of it so guess it's a personal choice to read or not to read.

A delightful addition to the series. Evil doers of multiple sorts, a vicar, a Laird, much family, a Cornish woman led to a very interesting plot. The last chapters were unexpected. I can't wait for the next book.

I loved th chemistry between Declan and Caya and I loved the humor and relationship between the three Sinclair cousins. I also loved the fact that Delcan was unwilling to give up on his future wife no matter what obstacles got in their way.

BETTING THE SCOT: is in my top 5 ! This book has everything you want in a historical romance. The hero is loving , caring and fierce.... the heroine beautiful, poor and troubled. Multiple villains, suitors and storylines.

Another winner!

This is my second book from author Jennifer Trethewey and I’m already looking forward to the next one. This book continues on the stories of those hunky Highlanders and I don’t know anyone who won’t adore sweet Declan. Another winner for Trethewey!
