The laws of nature will bend. After more than 104 years, Carmela, the fourth generation of the Montecarlos clan will be born on a leap year - sa parehong araw ng kapanganakan ni Carmelita. A short trip to San Alfonso for her 20th birthday will give her rebellious life a whimsical twist. Through a diary, she'll go back in time. And the Carmela of 2016 will meet Juanito of 1892.
• 2018-2019 Best Selling Author by ABS-CBN books • 2019 Game Changer Award by ABS-CBN books • Bestseller in Philippine Publication Fiction of National Bookstore.(ILYS1892)
I find Wattpad stories superficial from the moment I read their synopsis. This is the very reason why I shy away to Wattpad stories that are published as books.
I Love You Since 1892 has a big potential despite the many loopholes I noticed. The concept of going back in time is not something new as well. I won't explore further how I bumped into this book. But I'd like to highlight the good points and things to improve on in this book:
Good points: 1. It gave me a good laugh! Truly an entertaining book and it is something I will share with my younger friends. 2. The historical facts may be too shallow if the reader has advanced knowledge about Philippine history. But the storyline is a good starting point for beginners and teaches them to appreciate history. Such a creative way to introduce a boring discussion to many juvenile minds. 3. Despite the big difference of the timeline, I like how the author keeps the relatability of the past to the present generation.
Things to improve on: 1. The author should pay more attention to the lines said by each character. I noticed that they are, for the most part, the same in tone, in the structure, and even with the terms they use. This puts the characters at risk of not having their own identity. It could be a single word or phrases they constantly say. 2. I would love to read more historical facts because the book focused too much on the lives of the characters. The author could incorporate other events in our history and how they affected the characters and how they will change them, particularly Binibining Carmelita (Carmela) since she came from the present. 3. Aside from the spelling errors, the correct usage of punctuation marks is also frustrating.
Personally, I didn't like the writing style because it gives me the impression that it is written by a 15-year old kid. I also didn't like the term "Inang Madre" because it degrades the personhood of the character and it is quite disrespectful if we are to consider the setting of the story. How the terms "Binibini" and "Ginoo" are used give me a suggestion that minimal research is done with the creation of this book. It is important to pay attention to how people from 1892 address each other, depending on the degree of their closeness.
But since this is a series, the author can surely redeem herself on the succeeding books. Subjectively, the passion of the author to writing is very much alive in this book. Kudos and may you keep on writing and learning!
Grabe 'yung epekto sa'kin ni Juanito these days. Iba talaga sya lahat.
Halo-halong emosyon! I Love You Since 1892 will be always in my heart. Forever! Mabuhay ka at ang I Love You Since 1892! Mabuhay ang #Juanela #ILoveYouSince1892!!!
This marks the first published book that I read from wattpad, and quite frankly, actually enjoyed and relished.
The plot and the concept of this book is unique and offers a diverse premise to a now thriving mainstream wattpad stories. A historical fiction genre that Filipino books lack to expound these days. I've always been neglecting my countrymen's books to read, books that always explore overly saturated and shallow plot and tropes i.g badly written bad boys who shall shoot for the stars and delve onto the depths of the moon for their lover trope, which is not inherently bad, just not my preference. I rarely see popular and acclaimed books now that are eye-catching and well-written.
Luckily I chose this to be my book review for my Filipino subject in 10th grade, I learned a lot of Filipino vocabularies which I desperately need, and historical undertones during the spanish colonial period.
Comparing to filipino famous books its 5/5 but generally as a reader, there are a tiniest bit of typhographical errors and there's something missing from this book that I can't seem to grasp, I wasn't always awestrucked but the characters had chemistry and entertaining banters. I cringed at hashtags and I always feel like it's 'too much' sometimes there are plot holes like "isang linggo mula ng kami ay lumisan" without the viewpoint from the character's dialogues although, wasn't that bad, just a missing part of my '5 star'
I Love You Since 1892 is one of the popular stories on Wattpad back in 2016. Along with a lot of well-known books, it has been published locally. Though I was an avid user of Wattpad in its peak years—or what I’d like to call The Age of Diary ng Panget—I have not heard of I Love You Since 1892 until recently. It is the first Filipino historical fiction Wattpad story that I’ve heard of and it sparked my interest. Due to the lack of access to the edited, published hard copies, I settled with reading on the unedited version on Wattpad.
My expectation for the Wattpad version was not high since it is the first draft. If you cannot bear reading unpolished work, then I suggest do not read the Wattpad version. It is filled with errors—excessive and lack of spaces, inappropriate use of punctuation marks, and improper capitalization are the most common problems I encountered. It seemed like the author published her chapters without sparing a second thought on writing rules. The formatting took a chunk away from my reading experience that I had to stop reading it for a day. What made me continue was my desire to finish the book.
The story has potential. The essence of the story is there but it could use some work. I personally think that it is lacking in a lot of areas and it would be better if the loopholes were patched, questions were answered, and some filler scenes were removed. There were chapters that were dragging and boring. It would have been a good addition to the book if the author added some historical events in the story. I would have loved to see how the characters, especially Carmella would mingle with historical figures and how her existence would have changed history. I also noticed that the characters share one similar tone and it gets boring and indistinguishable after some time. There is hardly any difference between the dialogue of a servant girl and the elite. This prohibits the characters to have their own identity. The author’s lack of research about the culture of these people was evident. I am not a fan of the writing style and Carmela’s use of text speak when alone with her thoughts since it can get cringe-worthy.
There were instances when the chapters were prolonged because of an inserted full-length text of a legend or a song. Though I appreciate the additional knowledge on legends, it would have been better and more efficient to make the character retell the story concisely in 1-2 paragraphs and the story would have been okay without the songs inserted.
The story was a light read and nothing too heart-wrenching. It has a lot of room for improvement and it is not entirely bad. It is a good way to engage young readers in reading about history, though the cultural aspect of the book is not accurate.
Enjoy basahin. Congratulations, Binibining Mia.
Wala namang kakaiba sa plot. Isang ate na teenager na mula sa present time na nakapag-travel back to the Spanish era sa Pilipinas. Napagkamalang nanay nya. Then may krimen.
there were typos and errors in the og version when i first read it 4-5 years ago when i was g7 i think? if you cannot bear reading unpolished work then don’t read the wp version. fortunately a friend gifted to me the published version(5 books) which are better but there were still issues w/ the writing. i swear the first chapters are cringey but idc. pls do give this story a chance if you’re filipino. once she gets back in time, it gets real!!!!
it has a lot of room for improvement but anyway i’ll still rate this 5* bcs i always cry whenever i read the last book, it’s such a tearjerker. i got a book hangover when i first finished it. the plot is superb, there were a lot of plot twists and character development!!! there were historical infos and places mentioned throughout the whole story that made me appreciate our history more.
it’s also an eye opener that love has no boundaries even if it's against all odds. juanito alfonso and carmela isabella my beloveds :(
p.s don’t be intimidated by the length pls it’s worth it
p.s. PLS READ “Su Punto de Vista” after finishing this one!!!! it’s a special book for juanito’s pov and it’s only 127 pages! the spacing is also huge i swear u can finish it in like 1-2 hours.
Made me cry and suffer from anxiety and severe nostalgia for a life during the Spanish colonization when I wasn't even born yet. It broke my young heart so good! That was then I acknowledged I was totally fine with unhappy endings; quite frankly, I craved for it.
5 stars because this will hold a special place in my heart forever.
This book has so much potential. I'm so glad I read it.
Why I read this book: I have always been a fan of historical romance/fiction and I have always wanted to read a book in this genre that is written in the Philippine context.
What is the book about: It is about a girl who finds herself travel back in time to fulfill a mission for her ancestor.
What I liked: 1. The antagonists were well-driven characters. I specifically want to mention Leandro's character. There were several moments where I wish Carmela would just like him back but I think Leandro deserves so, so much more. He has made mistakes, he has pursued his dreams, and he has fought for Carmela. His death was something I did not easily take. 2. How this book is more than just a love story. I like how it talked about the rebellion and has showed both sides of the forces. 3. I like how they first introduced the Alfonso's as one of the well-known families in the area then have them dethroned later on. It was a huge issue indeed but, also an interesting one for the main characters of the story. 4. The Filipino values and traditions shown in the story especially being family-oriented and God-fearing. 5. I like the detail of the surname Flores translating to floral and also translating to a passage of a rose that is beautiful but has thorns and the only way to get rid of it is pluck it out of its roots. 6. I like how it revealed the poor justice system of the Philippines and the limited education girls can receive. 7. It's okay for me that Carmela didn't end up with anyone in the modern world. It was painful to see them part ways but it also did not feel right for them to end up with anyone else. 8. It's also okay for me that Juanito found out about the mission in the end because it would have been hard for him if the mission was a success and the Carmelita he ends up with is different from the girl he fell in love with. 9. The last few scenes where the painting, Juanito's diaries, and the necklace were back in Carmela's hands. I appreciate what she did in creating the Montecarlos museum and restoring the Alfonso's mansion.
Comments: 1. The story was easy to read but the tone of the writing in some parts was a bit childish 2. It came to a point where there were a lot of characters to keep track of and because of the few exposure and many similarities of these characters, they don't have a solid identity and they all just blended to me. 3. I wish there were more historical details 4. Some passages were too long and unnecessary. Some conversations were really fun while some were a bit bland. 5. The last arc where the real Carmelita was taking over her own body was weird. Nevertheless, I know this book is fiction and has a lot of out-of-this-world details in it. These chapters made me hate the real Carmelita. It was an unexpected twist of events. I think the author was trying to portray internal conflict. 6. I think there could have been a better ending scene but perhaps I'm just saying this because I want Juanito and Carmela to reunite.
Anything that makes me cry gets an additional 1 star; hence 3.5/5 stars for I Love You since 1892
Note: Read this because I had to read a Wattpad book for an English class! This is the Wattpad version which is unedited, and not the published version.
This book has a lot of potential, and its premise is really interesting. Just needs some polishing on a lot of aspects, and filling up of the plotholes.
IMO, the best thing about this book is the end. Not in a sense that finally, this horrible book ended, but more of the best events happened in the end. The entire book was so eventful and it was difficult to keep track of a lot of things. Para siyang teleserye na ang daming paikot-ikot, but that’s just the Filipino way, ya feel? Pero yung culmination niya talaga sa end—medyo worth it. Made me sob like crazy. And a very fitting ending, super satisfied with it.
Few concerns, however:
1. The writing style was very mediocre. Was difficult to get through at times because there were so much kyaa~, waaah!, omg!, dugdug, which I can understand why it was used, but it got tiring to read real soon. Also, a lot of times the author had to spell out the implications, which negates the whole implication thing, and leaves less room for readers to develop reading comprehension as everything is, in a way, spoonfed to them. But I guess Filipinos dig that.
2. Lots of spelling and grammatical errors, especially with nang and ng. Could have been fixed when it was published, as I read the unedited version on Wattpad.
3. The historical fiction aspect of this book was more of an information vomit, super textbook yung information. It felt more like reading a history textbook rather than reading a story constructed around historical facts or something. Some lang naman! May mga storyline rin ni Aling Trinidad and all.
4. I couldn't really get into the romance because some scenes really felt cringe aaaaa pero baka personal problem ko na 'to because I have seen a lot of people enjoying it naman.
5. The dialogue needs fixing ! The voice of each character has to be more distinguished—they all sound the same to me, both indio and the ilustrado.
Anyway, I would say this book exceeded my expectations as a Wattpad book. Didn’t expect myself to cry, but here I am. Would give this a read, but a word of warning: it's super duper lengthy and so many things happen that my brain almost exploded.
If you need a light read, it’s a good candidate. I like the story of going back in time, because I myself wanted to experience what the Philippines was like before modernization. And I also love our culture. I would just like to give my honest comments on this. So here are mine: 1. Ina? Ama? Inang Madre? She could’ve just used Inay, Itay or Nanay, Tatay. (I don’t really know anong tagalog ng Mother Superior) 2. The use of hashtags in the book, I think, wasn’t necessary. #FeelingBetrayed and etc. 3. Some sentences are quite hard to understand. Tagalog na yon ha? And there are a lot of typo error on the book. Di ba naproofread naman sya? May editor naman siguro right? 4. don’t know about her Ate Josefina who was a sister. As far as I know kasi, the sisters can’t go out to party and change into party clothes or remove their habits once they already professed. Dito kasi yung ate nya, naka-habit na daw so nakapagprofess na siguro yun? Pero nakakalabas pa, nakakapagparty and nakakapagdamit pa ng magarbo? I just don’t get it. Anyways, this is just fiction. 5. This book is like a printed wattpad. Di ko pa sya nabasa sa wattpad before and 1 pa lang naman kasi ang nabasa ko sa wattpad. Pero comparing wattpad kasi from other books that I’ve read (those books talaga from publishing houses), wattpad is mostly from beginner-writers. Their way of writing is a lot different. I think it would be okay if it was presented in a novel-like presentation (I hope you got what I meant by that) Although this is just fiction. I know the reader can go a long way. She has a colorful imagination and talent in writing. She can do better.
PS I might be hated by my comment. As I said, I am not a writer myself but I read a lot kaya siguro madami lang akong napansin.
Truthfully, I started shying away from wattpad since 9th grade. I got really fed up by the typical and cliche romance plots of the 90% of all wattpad stories.
This book series is the one thing that intrigued me enough to actually pick it up and read. So anyway, I loved the premise of the story. I loved the concept of time travel in the spanish-colonial era that spiced up my usually most hated book genre – romance. I find the story entertaining. I do not skip parts or cringe as I would in other cliche wattpad books. I recommend this.
The only thing that I can point out that is the flaw of this book is the character lines of the actual 1892 characters. It seems as though the writer didn't put in much effort to come up with appropriate words and phrases to use in the conversations between the 1892 characters and carmela. The lines of the characters are usually either repetitive, inconsistent or inaccurate. Binibining Mia use modern Filipino words that are adopted from the Western language which at the period within the book has still yet to exist.
I do not really mind it that much, however it would be a richer reading experience if the writer had the ability and effort to have us "live" in that time period using the power of her words.
There are also no buildup on Carmela's development on her sudden feelings for Juanito. The readers weren't given a solid ground or enough storytelling to show us that 'this happened therefore it's reasonable why she started having feelings for Juanito in such a short period of time'. The next thing you know, the writer just inserts a "Di ko kaya maging masaya para sa kanila." But that's just my opinion. Maybe that's the author's point? Her love was unreasonable because it was influenced by the feelings of the real Carmelita? But nonetheless, I couldn't empathize with her character. The story lacks an emotional factor for me.
not only that it was well written but the narration of our very own protagonist was humorous too! the scenes and places were really vivid and it was such a roller coaster of emotions while reading this. it did pretty well on the story, really. intriguing surprising interesting, what more could i say? oh! entertaining gripping and even romantic, full of chivalry- all thanks to our gentlemen and juanito alfonso of course! goodness. i just couldn't help but smile even at the sight and mention of his name. but then again, it was also full of heartaches. oh, how my heart breaks in almost every scene. my heart still aches for our main leads too. asdfghjkl. not to mention there was a bit of creepiness on the last bit of the book! and again, heart aches. aha, you won't get away with it no matter how you want to believe me i know. overall i enjoyed and devoured this story so much and liked the open ending yet i must admit that i couldn't help but ask for more juanito and carmela huhu.
Mababaliw. Mamumulat. At maraming matututunan.
Maganda, kakaiba, may konting history lesson, may family values at Filipino culture and tradition na na-highlight...
I would've loved to see character improvements din lalo na kay Carmela, I hope it happened in the next two books. 😊
The plot and characters are exceptionally done. However, the writing strategy could have been in better or neater grammar. I liked that it awaken a lot of people to love history more. And for Juanito Alfonso, I give 5 stars 💛
Okay, actually a rather good book behind all its mistakes and whatnot.
Would I recommend this to readers new to the YA romance genre? No. Would I recommend this to experienced romance readers? Well, yes, but not really.
For the technical aspects of the book, like proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, and run-on sentences, I'd say that this book does quite a bad job at it, seriously. No offense to the author, but I assume that this was a first-draft novel published to Wattpad without the author proofreading the book first. I'm sure the edited version is far more perfect with technical issues like these. But to be honest, as a writer even I keep in mind basic grammar, spelling, punctuation, and making sure that my sentences aren't too long, even when I word-vomit through the pages.
The plot of the book was quite good though. It got me hooked throughout the entirety of it that I was able to ignore its technical aspects. The character deaths, the development between Juanito and Carmela, and so on. When something happens behind the scenes in the book, the author explains it in very long sentences that I can hardly understand what's happening, though. So if you want a plot-romance focused story this is definitely the book to read, as long as you're willing to look past its mistakes.
The narrative style of the author is very straightforward and direct but at the later stages of the book, it changes. It also sounds very much like a teenage girl and seeing as how that's what the protagonist really is, I think it's quite fitting. This, along with the novel's plot and romance, is what made the story good to read for me and many other readers who loved the book.
Also the humor. It's like... really funny. I'm serious, it's genuinely funny. There are moments like when Juanito said that he was an addict without knowing what it meant that got me giggling.
So yeah... A lot of people said that the book is full of historical inaccuracies and loopholes but I wasn't able to spot them. But I wasn't able to spot them, or I was too concerned with the very-long sentences to care.
Do I love this book? Yes. Do I also hate it? Also Yes.
I read this while I was stuck because of quarantine. Its been five years since I isolated myself from reading on wattpad considering that I was a college student.
Then I came across this novel which was written in wattpad. I gave it a try, I did not have any high expectations at first but boy it truly exceeded my standars. I, myself NEVER tried reading any historical fictions. So this one is truly commendable. Yes, there were some cons, there is no perfect story, and the author knows it.
The first chapters my sound cringy. Like Carmela's use of 'WAHHHH' or 'KYAHHH'. But once you reach chapter 23, shit gets real. You see how the tone gets serious, you see how the protagonist is engaged to this new world. I believe that every character has their own flaws, we should consider that they are humans, so I appreciate how every one of them showcased that side of being 'flawed' and 'human'.
It felt like I was inside a movie like 'goyo' or 'heneral luna'. Like I said, I was never the one to appreciate history, but for a 21-yr-old like me, this novel truly pushed me to discover and explore our history. Juanito Alfonso is a noble character. Imperfect, but noble. Carmela on the other hand, I wish she should have stood up more on certain scenarios. I wish she was stronger.
I was also looking for Juanito's symbolism on why alot of lives has to be sacrificed in order for him to live. Why? What was the general symbolism for this concept?
The plotwist at the end was good. Unfortunately, there were alot of spoilers on the way. Mia was 19 when she wrote the novel, she is still growing--learning.
At the end, I ended up collecting the books published by ABS-CBN. Reviews may differ based on our tastes, but one should never be ashamed for the book that he/she likes.
I love you since 1892 is a truly worth reading. No minor typos and faults could change my mind. This novel took me to places, it made me feel different emotions, and finally learned the importance of history that I began researching about our ancestors back then.
Finally finished! I had high expectations for this book, especially since it comes highly recommended in my feed. However, it proved to be quite a challenge to get through, not only due to its substantial length of over 1000+ pages but also because I struggled to maintain interest as I progressed. I admit I even considered giving up when I was about 60% through. Nevertheless, I persevered and managed to read it till the end, though I did end up skimming through the last part.
The concept of the book is undeniably superb, but unfortunately, the flow of the story felt dragging at times. There were certain scenes that could have been omitted, as they did little to contribute to the overall narrative and only added to my occasional boredom.
I dunno but I cannot emotionally connect to the characters, to the main leads (I tried, I really tried) but the supposedly "kilig" moments is kinda forced. Maybe bcs the story wherein they developed for each other is kinda off. The flow is kinda off. Like, awkwardly developed.
Moreover, the excessive and unnecessary deaths throughout the story felt unrealistic and unreasonable.
On a positive note, the twist in the last part did leave a sad impression.
In summary, I would describe the book as just okay.
I decided to try reading wattpad stories again last year and because I've been seeing a lot of recos for this book, I read it. The book set is quite expensive, luckily there's still a copy in wattpad. I managed to read the whole story without spending much.
I like the concept of the story. I like the setting, which took place during the Spanish Era. I have alwaya been curious of way of life during the colonial periods, this book gave me a glimpse. It was not as detailed but it made me imagine myself during those times.
I think the book was a great read. I enjoyed it too. I was surprised with the plot twist. But I got annoyed that author killed a lot of characters, way too many for me that it feels like some deaths are unnecessary, but placed there to hurt the readers and give the story a higher emotional impact.
When I learned that Sister Olivia is an angel, I was like "okay not what I expected". I just thought that the book will not have any religious associations, but then she was a nun so yeah, of course there will be religious association.
Overall, it was an enjoyable read.

This book is an opener for Filipino authors to start writing and making novels by our native language. Binibining Mia's writing style in this novel is easy to understand. The way that the culture of 2015 and 1892 conjugated here is such a blessing to the readers.
It tackles a lot of historical information, movements and happenings. Such as Jose Rizal's paper, the existence of death penalty, marginalisation of the native Filipinos and the brutal and inhumane colonialism of the Spaniards.
The three mentioned families or familias are well built. I wanna emphasized how every detail are vital to every scene.
Also, the locations. Expect changes of places. So many historical places are mentioned.
This novel broke my heart into pieces but it also healed me somehow. I also knew from the start that the guy who saved Carmela at the bar is something related to Juanito, and yes I'm right, they look alike. But still Juanito Alfonso from 1892 is irreplaceable for me. His character is something that you will with hiraeth.

I read this story way back 2019, and up until this very day, I still consider this as my favorite local novel !! the fact that it made me stay up so late to finish a chapter cause I cannot stop myself from reading + made me sobbed so hard I can't breathe properly and my parents kept on asking me what's wrong cause i WAS BAWLING MY EYES OUT SO BAD! is already enough to consider this as one of well written novel in my mother tongue language.
Its not the type of book where you will cry at the end of the story, nope, you will cry in between and CRY VERY BAD at the end. it gives me mixed emotions and I loved it. the romance, the lessons, the history, the sadness, the anger, the betrayal, the frustration, the kilig is well balanced. i thanked whoever convinced me to read this, and my 2019 self for reading it because it definitely did not disappoint.
if u are not yet reading it. why? babe do yourself a favor and read it. go on don't be shy. its all worth it. the pain, the happiness, the kilig, oh my literally everything in this story is worth it.
i would’ve given this 5 ⭐️ but i’m giving it a 4.75 ⭐️
ilys 1892 was the first ever tagalog wattpad book i’ve read and the book series did NOT disappoint. (i read the published physical books & not the wattpad version)
despite the attachment i’ve fostered with the characters, what set me back the most was how redundant the antagonists’ personalities are delivered. it’s either a lady who’s snarky, rude, spoiled, matapobre, or a man who loves power, borderline obsessive and such. they all somehow felt like the same person if not for the different names. also, it took me so long to grow accustomed with the 2015-2016 sense of humor.
despite all that, this book was a great read! had me hyperfixated enough to finish the whole book series in 5 days despite my busy schedule.
the twists are what got me. i’ve also grown to love the protagonist as the story progressed. juanito is unreal. i now get the hype and obsession he garnered during 2018. to add, it is also refreshing to learn and be reminded bits of the philippine history while being entertained.
This book was such a unique reading experience. I didn’t expect to get so emotionally invested, but the mix of historical setting, romance, and mystery completely pulled me in. The time-travel element added something really special—it felt different from anything I’ve read before.
What I really loved was the emotional depth of the characters. Their connections felt intense and heartfelt, and the way the past and present were woven together kept me hooked. The story had drama, love, and just the right amount of suspense to keep things exciting.
The writing was sometimes a bit flowery or dramatic, but honestly, I didn’t mind—it matched the epic, romantic vibe of the story. It made me feel a lot, and I was completely swept away by the world and the emotions.
If you're into historical romance with a twist, I Love You Since 1892 is definitely worth to read!
FYI: this was originally a thick single book with the first publisher but now it was separated into five books. Okay so to begin with this book is just a masterpiece even though i’ve read a lot of bestselling paper back book, this story written in our language by our Local author is like no other i’m sure if there’s an english version a lot would love this book too! This book totally made me laugh and CRY a whole bucket. After finishing this i was just staring at the wall for most days. This book will surely want you to beg just to have another ending but i guess that’s what makes this read astounding and unforgettable! Surely Juanito and Carmela owns my heart. Even though there were lots of error in the writing for me its the story story that matters and this one surely has it!
