This was a big blow for me reading this book. I thought it would be as good as the 2nd(That is because I read the 2nd one first:)) But it was good and people should enjoy reading it. But I liked the 2nd one best!

Cute! Reads like a classic Geronimo/Thea Stilton book, full of beautiful illustrations and fun fonts. It's a little flat plot-wise, but then again, I'm at least twice the target age range so I'm ignoring that. Big praise for the snippets of accurate facts on marine animals in the book, it felt like just the right level of detail and 'interesting-ness' for young children to learn about the ocean's creatures!

+10 points for having an orca on the cover, to which my orca-expert friend says, "Weirdly lumpy, but it has a saddle patch, so I'm impressed."

Kids who really love the Thea Stilton stories might like this (even though we don't see Thea herself until the end!), but aside from the built-in fandom appeal, there's not much to recommend here. Weak plotting, characterization, and dialogue all make this a pretty boring story. The art and coloring are solid.

First graphic novel in ages! Love the Thea Sisters Mysteries, and combined with a graphic novel style equals perfect for me.

I really like this book because it is easy to read and relaxing to read. It is comic and I think it is better that the some books in the same series because they are all words and less picture. I like comics better than books with all words in it.

It was the first book of the series so it was helpful to know what was going on. It was fun and entertaining.

This had a bit of mystery to it, but I really wish the publishers would admit that these are NOT Thea Stilton stories, but Mouseford Academy ones.

Understands some parts of the story, while some I really don't understand it. But it still is a good book, it's just that it is in comic form

Reread review:

One main thing about this book is that it makes so much more sense now that I'm old enough to be one of the Thea Sisters. I've read it at least two or three times in the past, and each time, the majority of the book escaped me. I mean, evil fashion lady is building an evil aquarium that's illegal and the Thea Sisters have to stop her! It's not rocket science. But reading it now, the writing style really stands out. That is, while younger kids can enjoy this, it seems written for older Thea Sisters fans to appreciate. There's no big explanation about who the characters are or their past exploits, because they trust the readers to already have a strong idea of who each Thea sister is, despite it being a soft reboot.

The book strikes a very specific tone. It's not really happy-go-lucky, friendship saves the day. The main setting is college and the Sisters actually act like college kids. It reminded me of Legally Blonde in more ways than one. The mouselets wear outfits that are not necessarily Disney channel friendly, but fit their various personalities. They actively dislike people who aren't villains; they just find them annoying. They don't even get along with each other all the time. The snark is low-key but it's there.

That was what took me aback the most. None of the five act like perfect angels, except Paulina the resident empath. Colette is slightly petty and very dramatic. Pam is constantly skeptical and kind of stews in her emotions. Nicky is rash (not new) and Violet has one moment of being very unimpressed with the de Vissen's show of wealth, possibly the most negative emotion I've seen her display in all the books combined.

But they're kind of more likeable and real for it. They attend the mouse equivalent of Yale and can afford to jetset around the globe and to magical realms. Grounding them is good. I like what this comic is trying to achieve.

Anyways, other stand out characters were the marine science professor, Dina, and the de Vissen siblings.
-Van Kraken always struck me as unusually young and boyband-looking for a professor, but I've seen the errors of my ways. Even good looks and a giant heart can't stop you from being that one professor no one wants to work with.
-We've seen Sardinia in the novels, but I love that she has so much personality in the comic. Her fight with Leo still hits the same way it did a decade ago, alongside the realization that you can and more than likely will get upset with the person you love the most. It being a big deal that she won a scholarship to Mouseford as a small-town girl is also unusually strong world building.
-Vanilla is just her jealous self as usual, but Vic's murky motivations and general interest in Pam have always been a selling point for me. He obviously does not like his mother and sister, but he's not all good either. It's not often that a Thea Sisters antagonist is morally gray.

I have my bones to pick about the Thea Sisters series but at this point, it's kind of ridiculous to hold it to any particular standard. I'm now far past the target audience age, and these will just keep coming out anyway. I enjoyed it until I didn't anymore, so going back to books, like this one, that I did enjoy is fun.

However, special shoutout to the art for doing it right. I could be on my soapbox for half an hour just complaining about how much they anthropomorphized the characters in later books, but this comic has a perfect ratio of human and mouse. They still have their tails and their snouts haven't been pug-ified to death. They regularly walk around barepaw and the colors of their stomachs aren't limited to their faces. The coloring is brilliant in general, and the pacing is good. Good stuff, good comic.

This is the first book in the Thea Stilton Graphic Novels series. We've read most of the Geronimo Stilton Graphic Novels that have been published so far, and our girls were excited to see a new series that is more directed toward girls. I don't like some of the stereotypical characterizations, but on the whole, it's a fun book with adventurous and smart girls. It's a fast read and our girls liked the ocean animals.

The Secret of Whale Island by Thea Stilton

If you haven't met Thea and her classmates/sisters, now would be a good time. It's the beginning of a new school year at Mouseford Academy and the girls are looking forward to fun, social activities, professors, and quite a bit of chaos.

The graphics are delightful. The characters are full of pazazz, sparkle, and curiosity.

Fun reading!
