When a suspect explodes mid-interrogation and his office is taken over by an intergalactic despot, undead detective, Dan Deadman, reckons he's finally hit rock bottom.
Banished to a dangerous underground hostel network, Dan becomes embroiled in a mass-murder investigation that will take him from the bowels of Down Here to the depths of the ocean. As the clues run out and the case collapses around him, Dan discovers a sinister plot that could wipe out two whole civilizations, and plunge the planet of Parloo into an endless bloody war.
Featuring terrifying sea monsters, killer toilets, and an anatomically correct children's cartoon mascot who'll haunt your nightmares forever, "Dead in the Water" is the third book in the Dan Deadman Space Detective series, and perfect for fans of Space Team , The Dresden Files , and tiny aggressive Irish fellas.
Barry J. Hutchison is an award-winning author, screenwriter and writer of comics. Having written over 70 books for children and teenagers, Barry is now writing books for adults. Space Team is his first grown-up novel.
Barry lives in the Highlands of Scotland with his wife, two children, and irritatingly upbeat dog.
Book 3 of the Dan Deadman series has come and gone, and while I enjoyed it, it wasn't great.
This series isn't Space Team, set in the same universe, but lacks the draw of Space Team.
Ollie is kind of like Cal, but not as charming. Dan is like mech, but not as funny, and Artur is kind of like... Well no, Artur is just Artur.
The biggest problem with this book is that once again the "space detective" isn't a detective. Also, in this book there is no mystery.
In the first book, Dan had a mystery to solve, the missing child. And while it may not have been priority 1 all the time, he spent the whole book trying to solve it.
Book 2, Dan was hired to follow someone's husband. It was a definate back seat to the main plot, and really just served as a plot device in the 3rd act, there was a mystery all the same.
Book 3, the idea of a mystery is kind of gone. There is a monster to be hunted, and while Dan is trying to track down a mass murderer, it is not an actual mystery. There are no clues, or leads or anything else to lead to a "who done it" just happenstance and McGuffins.
The biggest problem with these books is they don't seem to want to fit into a genre. They are comedy, but not all that funny. They are mystery, with out a mystery. They are action, with very little action. They are adventure, with too much standing around talking. About the only thing you can really lock them into is sci-fi, but the author plays that pretty light, so...
However, what this book does right is most everything else. The characters are amazing, the dialog is quick and sharp. The story is well planned out and is written to fit in with the Space Team storyline.
It started slow, but once it got going it was very enjoyable. I think my biggest problem is I know the author can do better, and I was disappointed that it wasn't as good as I thought it could be.
As I read "The King of Space Must Die" before the Dan Deadman books, I can say it's not required reading for the space team series. However, having read it, it did fill in some gaps in the Space Team story that u was wondering about. I would recommend reading this series after "The Guns of Nana Jones" but before "The King of Space Must Die".
***spoilers for this book and "The King of Space Must Die"***
My only problem with the continuity of this book and Space Team is in "The King of Space Must Die" it is established that Chrone gets free approx 30 years in the past, and starts setting up his empire.
The main antagonist says that he got out of the arms business when Chrone decided to set up shop downhere. It's unclear exactly how long ago that was, but as he had time to fully engineer a bio weapon, it seems reasonable a while.
He also says his dumping of toxic waste created Dan. While I don't know much about selling arms, I can't imagine it creates alot of toxic waste. So while not definate, likely the waste came from researching and making drugs.
Which means, that if Dan WAS created as a result of Chrone moving in and this guy getting out of guns, then Dan shouldn't have been crested in the non Chrone timeline.
Also I am curious as to what happened, as Dan got kicked out of his office and had to live in the stagnantes, where he met Finn. inn dies as a result of the events of the book, which wouldn't have come to pass without Chrone. So if Finn alive again and does Dan have his old office back?
This is the fifth story I have read in the Space Team Universe, but I have read many others by the author. Last year I encountered the works of J.D. Kirk I also discovered that Kirk publishes children’s books as Barry Hutchison, and other adult fiction as Barry J. Hutchison. I have read 24 stories published under the Kirk Name and am now working my way through the ones under the Hutchinson names, this is the 20th under that name. He has published over 200 books across the three pen names. If I had known that or I might not have picked up this first one. Friends call me a ‘completionist’ in that when I find an author I like, I try to read everything they have published. I have enjoyed all I have read from his pen and this one was no different.
The description of this novel is:

When doing research for the Dial D for Deadman review I found on Barry’s site a reading order for the Space Team Universe Books and Short Stories:
1. Space Team 2. Space Team: The Wrath of Vajazzle 2a. Space Team: The Holiday Special (found in Space Team: A Lot of Weird Space Shizz) 3. Space Team: The Search for Splurt 4. Space Team: Song of the Space Siren 5. Space Team: The Guns of Nana Joan 6. Space Team: Return of the Dead Guy 7. “Dial D for Deadman” 7a. “Dead Men Don’t Get Paid” (found in Space Team: A Lot of Weird Space Shizz) 8. Space Team: Planet of the Japes 9. “Dead Inside” 10. Space Team: Time Titan of Tomorrow 11. “Dead in the Water” 12. Space Team: The King of Space Must Die! 13. Space Team: Sting of the Mustard Mines 14. Space Team: Sentienced to Death 15. After this volume Deadman is part of the main Space Team story arcs, I am looking forward to getting caught up to that point. I have been intentionally jumping around Barry’s middle grade, young adult, and adult series. This was such a fun read. With a whole lot of slap stick humour, over the top antics. This book was laugh out loud funny. It reminds me of several series and authors, most of whom, I read when I was much younger. In a way this book and both series are like a jump back in time for me. The first to come to mind was Harry Harrison’s Bill the Galactic Hero series and his Stainless Steal Rat series, the next was Robert Asprin’s Phule’s Company Series. But for all the sense of a mash up of these other series there is something different about this offering.
I absolutely love the concept of the Deadman series. And the universal translator that blocks swearing is very easy to decipher. As is obvious by the title Dan is dead, yea literally dead. He is trying to make a living as a Private Eye. Think Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer, except he is dead, not a zombie. And has a conscience even though he fights it often. Ollie (Oledol) is a woman he rescued while closing a portal to the malwhere a place of nightmares. She says she cannot remember anything and she is now more than a bit of a side kick. And man does she have some kick. And Artur his pint size leprechaunish friend. The characters are great. The humour is maybe a bit juvenal. Think Deadpool with an automatic filter to clean up the language. These are so worth the read.
This story picks up shortly after the previous novel in the series. In this one again we find out more about Ollie, her powers, and even Dan’s own backstory. We also see Dan blackmain his old boss. And build an arsenal worthy of a deadman, or a small army. We also learn a little more about those who live in floating cities above. And discover that there are others who live in the waters below.
This book marks the 46th offering from Hutchison I have read in the last 18 months, under the three names he publishes under. They have all been entertaining reads. Some have been excellent. Reading this as mentioned was like a throwback to stuff I read in my late teens and early twenties. It was a very fun read. I love the character of Dan Deadman and look forward to reading more of his stories in the standalone trilogy and in the larger Space Team Universe. A highly entertaining read I can recommend for mature readers who love the slap stick humour! And as I said before thing Deadpool with an automatic filter to clean up the language. This book and series are so worth the read.
kindle unlimited, read all of Hutchinson's, not sure what that says about me or him but there it is

Another entertaining, fun read by Barry Hutchison with outstanding narration by Phil Thron. Mr. Thron is so good, it is like listening to a full cast production.
In this edition, Dan and his entourage, specifically Ollie and Artur, find themselves evicted from their office/home on the orders of Geronimus Crone. Despite being evicted, Dan is determined to track down an arms dealer he suspects is behind a mass murder. And, as if that isn't enough, while questioning an informant about said arms dealer, Dan comes face to face, in a manner of speaking, with a deadly sewer monster. Did the arms dealer do it? Where did the sewer monster come from? Will they find a new home? Exactly who is Geronimus Crone?
You will get all the answers once you read/hear/enjoy this book!
I'm really enjoying this author. His books (also thinking about Space Team) are over the top and silly, but make me laugh out loud pretty frequently. He's funny and has a way with words that interject humor and fun into his books.
His characters are silly and wildly flawed, and great fun to follow.
I'll continue to read all of his books. Note: I follow Hutchison on Facebook, and his fans make for a lively and fun page.
Not as funny as the first Deadman, but tons of thrills and spills!
Man, I wish I could tell you the ending, cause it's fonking off the hook! But I can't. I can tell you that Ollie plays a major role in this, and she's just about as cute as a big furry penis on a teddy bear. Dan loses a lot of parts, and Artur (sp?) meets up with his wife - which doesn't go as well as you might expect.
In Dead in the Water, Barry weaves another captivating, unpredictable adventure for Dan and his sidekicks. His Space Team Universe “novels” are immersive, amusing and thoroughly enjoyable. I’m always left wanting more and, fortunately, Barry delivers. I’m anxiously awaiting his next installment in the STU series.
What a story! Totally fonking awesome in its imagination and fast moving action sequences. Now I can't wait to read the next instalment. I mean, what could possibly go space wrong with a Space Team/Dead man collaboration. Well we're gonna find out soon and I for one cannae Space wait...
Dan Deadman is back and his luck is all bad, could it get any worse, of course it can!!! Another good book in the Deadman series, with the interactions between Dan, Ollie and Artur improving with every book. Also, a nice ending with Cal Carver and team dropping in, literally, setting up a cross over book.
I didn’t think I’d like Deadman books, well not as much. They aren’t what I’m usually drawn to. But I was sooo wrong. They are AWESOME! I really didn’t think anything could be funnier than Space Team shenanigans but Mindys brown noise never fails to make me laugh so hard I cry. Can’t wait for the next adventure!
Loved the series. It’s all about a dead detective who’s not actually dead ( nor a detective). His “friend“ Artur who’s a leprechaun with anger issues and a voice activated multi purpose gun called Mindy. What more could you ask for ? A right laugh out loud series, which I hope will continue.
If you really enjoy this series, then this is just more of the same. I really wish Space Team for sure! So was reading this as I had some credits at Audible. I enjoy the characters I think, but the stories are not for me.
Another great story,a proper can't put down page turner!Plenty of action, believable characters and good plotlines.Waiting for next in series!Well done so far mate.
It's amazing how this can be similar to Space Team (and in the same universe, obviously) and yet so unique, so much its own thing. Dan should be, by description and definition, a not-very-likable guy, and yet he makes a fantastic protagonist. It's the gruff wannabe anti-hero with the heart of gold, and Ollie and his protectiveness of her can sell virtually any story.
I think the twist in this one was a little easier to see coming, but still a worthwhile entry. And, in the process, the world gets expanded a bit more...
