An honest, hilarious, and incredibly relatable A-Z guide to adulting from one of Australia's most loved entertainers and radio presenters.

Tanya Hennessy can't tell the time on an analogue clock, was once employed as a stilt-walker and still sleeps with Morris, her childhood teddy bear, so naturally, she is the most qualified person to write a guidebook for growing up.
AM I DOING THIS RIGHT? is an encyclopedia of life lessons that Tanya has learned so that you don't have to. From A is for Awkward, to B is for Bodies, right through to V is for Viral and Z is for, well, ZZZZ, Tanya has compiled an entire alphabet full of hilarious, horrible, humbling and happy experiences that will make you laugh, cry and ultimately leave you feeling less alone in this complicated world.
If Amy Schumer and Rebel Wilson had a love child, you'd get Tanya Hennessy - comedian, radio announcer and social media sensation. Originally from Newcastle, Tanya started in radio in 2012. Since then she has become an international social media sensation; written her first book, bestseller Am I Doing This Right?; become an ambassador for Priceline Pharmacy; sold out 27 venues for her first comedy show Low Expectations; and appeared on I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here! In 2017 Tanya's rising star was recognized when she won the Junkee Award for Breakthrough Artist, was nominated for Cosmo Woman of the Year, selected to perform at Australia's first VIDCON and won best radio documentary at the Australian Commercial Radio Awards. Talented and hilarious, Tanya is a true multi-media star.
This book made me laugh out loud so much and Tanya is a person who can effortlessly make you laugh with out even trying.
Tanya gives you a glimpse into some of the important to her parts of her life and she does it in a way that makes you feel like your just listening to her just telling you in front of you.
This is a quick and light read, but it does have some real important messages about depression, anxiety, body image and bullying but the way Tanya it's done with grace and humour.
Tanya post videos on Youtube and is a radio personality, who i've been following for a bit so this book is like one of her videos but a much longer storytelling tool.
I could relate to Tanya so much and this is one of those books that you can pick up and just read for a laugh if your feeling down.
This book made me lol so much. Gosh Tanya is hilarious. I did love the funny and also loved when she went deeper and talked about struggles from the past. It’s not good she went through them but she did and she can give hope now to people struggling with the same things. Thank you Tanya for putting the good and bad in your book. I think your amazing and an inspiration.
I first came across Tanya on Facebook during one of her videos "Things people to say to hair dresses" and found her video so on point that I trawled Facebook then Youtube until I found her videos and indulged in them one after the other. When I found out that Tanya herself had trained to be a Drama teacher I was a full blown fan girl.
When I saw on her stories that she would be releasing a book, the count down was on and I even jumped on to Booktopia and grabbed myself a signed copy (my first ever signed book!).
When the book arrived I patiently waiting until Saturday so I could bask in the winter sun and devour it. Needless to say it only lasted a day, it's been years since I actually sat and read all day. I was utterly hooked by Tanya's anecdotes and found myself drawing parallels to my own life, especially the stories of her as a child charging her family and neighbors to watch her show.
I think the most memorable line for me was at the beginning of the book when reflecting on her own journey Tanya states "It's strange how I tried to be an actor for so long, then realized the most successful role I would ever play was myself". I'm myself every day and in what I do and truly love it, this line echos so many truths and think it would be a good one to pull out when students are choosing their careers, pick a job that lets you be yourself.
I really enjoy Tanya's videos. I had a friend get me onto them, and I genuinely laugh so hard at many of them. So I was excited to read this book, and even more excited when Tanya announced that she would be releasing an audio version. I knew I wanted to get this book that way. And I am glad I did. I think hearing this book in Tanya's voice made it much more special. You could feel her emotions as she read the words. This book had many moments where I laughed and it often left me grinning like a fool. It seemed to fly by and took no time at all to finish. I would definitely recommend to fans of Tanya. If you love her, then you'll love hearing these stories by her. If you're new to Tanya, then I recommend watching some of her videos online and if you like her and her humour, then give this book a go!
I honestly dont know what to write about this book other than thank you. I picked the book up as just something I could flick through on the plane on my way to a funeral, I thought well I've seen her videos shes funny it might make me forget the sadness I'm flying towards for an hour or two and I had to force myself to put it down... either that or watch my bag go around the conveyor belt again.
The writing was as if Tanya is simply there next to you telling you these incredible bits of her life, her struggles and triumphs, I was engrossed in every word. When she writes about the hard times I just wanted her to actually be next to me so I could hug her and let her know I've been there, when it gets to how she has overcome the obstacles I wanted to scream YASSS QUEEN! For the first time in my life.
So Tanya I say to you, continue to be lazy in your same four shirts on rotation (or is it five now?), fake tan away (so you can be a better person) and listen to that little whisper that tells you to keep going.
YOU ARE DOING IT RIGHT!
This book will have pride of place on my bookshelves and everytime I think it's all getting a bit much for me, I'll go back to it and see that if you have managed to overcome your obstacles, maybe I can overcome mine as well.
Tanya Hennessy is the women we all want to be friends with, we all went to spend time with and we all can relate to.
Like most people outside of Australia I found Tanya through her amazingly funny/relatable Youtube videos. When I found out that she was putting out a book I pre-ordered immediately. I was not disappointed. There are some heart felt moments that will help you get to know Tanya better like her experiences with online bullying as well as talking about insecurities. Overall though it is just damn funny! I was at work and couldn't put it down. I found myself laughing out loud and getting strange looks from patrons around me. (I am a librarian) There are so many parts that I could relate to from embarrassing moments and lack of emotion in a boyfriends text responses.
Most of us will never get to sit down for coffee or a drink with Tanya but this is the next best thing. Perfect summer read that you should buy for all your female friends!
If you’re after a raw, real, honest and hilarious book, then I cannot recommend this enough.
I became a fan of Tanya when she was on breakfast radio in Canberra. While I didn’t listen to much radio, I did quite enjoy having her on in the morning as she was the most real person I’d come across in a while.
Her A-Z recount of funny, sad and hard times is so well written and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. While there were some stories I’d already heard from her time on radio, it was interesting to read about her life up until now. It’s honest, embarrassing and funny - everything that real life is. Highly recommend!
This is an example of the kind of memoir I strongly dislike, full of shallow anecdotes and listicles and very little vulnerability. The fault lies partly in its gimmicky form—each of the chapters is ostensibly centred around a letter of the alphabet, much (or really nothing) like an encyclopedia. The chapter on online bullying (quite interesting and real) is overshadowed by filler content like the chapter called 'Um' which meanders into a meaningless discussion of Tanya's alleged desire to meditate. I think Tanya is an interesting, funny, and talented woman and I would have much preferred a traditional memoir with real reflection. This was not it.
Tanya’s book is raw, honest and unapologetically hilarious. The book reads exactly how she speaks which is rare - she captures her true self in every word. A vulnerable insight to the world of an anxious celebrity, showing the ins and outs of her career so far. The book tells us about where she has come from and how hard she has worked to get there. An amazing read!!!!!!!
Read this in one sitting and loved it. Made me laugh out loud as well as really consider all angles of Tanya’s comedy - the root of the self-deprecating jokes she sometimes makes. Perfectly balanced with humour, I hope that she finds the self-love she deserves as she clearly makes so many people happy!
I LOVED this book! Tanya Hennessy is not only funny, she is relatable & sincere. It honestly felt like I was spending the afternoon with my friend & having a few laughs. This book is laugh out loud and I would recommend this to all woman - you will recognise yourself in one of these chapters and you will finish it feeling like you’ve made a new friend.
Super relatable for me done in a very humorous way. A light and quick read that just makes you feel better about life. There are definitely some serious elements surrounding anxiety, depression, body image, and bullying and they're handled in a graceful and honest way that works beautifully with the tone of the book. Highly recommend.
Love, Love, loved it! Best book ever. I love Tanya Hennessy she is so down to earth, natural and very much your average person who you can relate to. She had a dream and she went for it all in, through all her ups and down she never gave up. A true Inspiration!
Tanya, you are doing this so right! I giggle snorted the whole way through the book and don’t feel so alone in my anxiety and overthinking anymore, knowing that you’re the exact same. Thank you Tanya for this gem of a book.
Absolutely loved it. Read it in 2 sittings and that’s only because I’m a mom of Little’s and had to get up the next morning ;). I have followed Tanya for awhile now and even though I don’t know her I feel like she is one of my best friends. This is a must read!!!
I loved the book, donut judge me! Just a great, light hearted, super easy to read. Watch a vid first then the book and it’s super easy to imagine Tanya is reading it to you.
When a book makes you laugh out loud in public.. yeah it's good. Very funny and very humbling. Tanya is true to herself and speaks frankly. A great read. I couldn't put it down.
I honestly didn't really know what I was getting into this - I don't really follow Tanya Hennessy, I don't listen to radio and I haven't watched her youtube videos. But this was actually, genuinely, delightful. I had so much fun reading this. Like this book spoke to me on so many levels. It was laugh out loud funny at time, and so relatable. I felt like Hennessy was writing about my life. The feelings of being in a long term relationship, having a tense relationship with your body, being (nearly) 30 and reflecting on your younger self, imposter syndrome, loving to eat (junk) food - so much of it spoke to my life's experiences. And Hennessy herself has an easy, conversational style of writing, a genuine, Australian humour that gently pokes fun at herself without being upsettingly self deprecating.
I didn't know what to expect with this book, but wow, what a massively pleasant surprise!
Tanya Hennessy is a well known Australian radio presenter, comedian, influencer, day drinker, and bargain hunter. In this book she recounts stories and lessons she has learnt in her life; her darkest and highest moments; and her love for job.
This is probably what I’d call a lose self-help book (I may have made that up) - it reaches important life lessons whilst also being a hilarious look into someone who’s just as awkward and chaotic as I am. This is the second or third time I’ve read this book, and I love it each time! If you want a light-hearted read with some series moments, this is it. Also, Tanya is my spirit animal.
PS: there would have been more variety of lollies in this picture to add colour, but I ate all the M&Ms on the way home.
I really enjoyed how the book was written in the tone as if the author was speaking to you. I literally read it 3 hours straight until I finished the whole book. It was easy to follow because the layout was in a A-Z format, you could pickup any random chapter whenever you wanted to.
My favorite chapter was the E which was super creative! And chapter I, where she was talking about impostor syndrome, I re-read it at least 3 times and cried every time I read it. I would say this book is quite personal, it gives you an insight on Tanya's life, but it is still very relatable. I love how reading her stories made me feel less alone.
If you're someone that would enjoy humorous, inspirational or emotional stories, you'll totally love this one! 10/10 recommend!
A good friend recommended that I read this book. I was unaware of the existence of Tanya Hennessy so I went into this book with no prior knowledge of her or her brand. I think that fact alone has set the scene for how enjoyable of a read for me this was. Tanya is refreshingly brutally honest, candid, upfront and open about her life and her challenges and this makes for an interestingly addictive read. I like people watching and working people out so to have Tanya practically bare all in this book was super. It's a very good, entertaining read. I just think had I known about her beforehand and maybe watched her videos ir listened to her on the radio it would have been even better.
