M.D. Massey describes himself as the prototypical INTJ. His eclectic background provides him with a rich tapestry of experiences to draw on when crafting fiction, as evidenced by the believable worlds and relatable characters he creates.

As a former Army combat medic (91B), professional martial arts instructor (Krav Maga, JKD, FMA), and women's self-defense instructor, he possesses a unique understanding of close combat, firearms, and criminal violence that few authors can match. This knowledge provides an element of realism to the Druidverse™ novels, setting them apart from other fantasy series.

Mr. Massey lives in the Texas Hill Country with his family and a huge American bulldog that keeps him company while he writes. When he's not in his office or at the local coffee shop writing, you can find him in his garage pummeling inanimate objects or knife-fighting with his friends.

There is no deception on the merchandise: it is indeed a zombie apocalypse narrated by a solitary hero. A classic though, with the originality of adding a nuclear war (only there as a decoration) and a third threat- a vampiric one, no less. And something tells me that the little green aliens are not so far.
It is well written, efficiently conducted, the characters are correct, there is only one narrative point of view. It has everything to please me, and yet I haven't been totally hooked.
Probably because it lacks a little suspense and humor for my taste. And there is a deja-vu side in the plot that gives a strong impression of already-read.
Must prove itself in the next episode.

I honestly don't really know what to say about this. It's pretty short and is a prequel (I think) to the series. Maybe I should have red book 2 first because this was sorta weird! This focuses on Aidan Sullivan. He was alone when the initial outbreak took place so didn't know about it. Now what bothered me about this bit was Aidan somehow got pneumonia and that's the explanation on why he was out of it for 2 weeks. It's easy happen of course, but felt a little too convenient.

Plus the whole way through, he said he was called Sully, then at the very end he said he was called Scratch. I know he evolved as a character, but at no other time did he mention Scratch!! I'm still scratching my head too on where the Aliens came from?? One second he is killing Zombies but then this thing comes and he is battling Aliens!!

In all, I just felt like I missed a lot of the plot and I didn't really connect to any of the characters. I might continue on with the series but I'm not sure yet. It just didn't grab me.

S.W. Salzman was really good, though I did feel that some of the sound effects were unnecessary. If you are doing sound effects, you either do it throughout or not at all, not throw them in every so often!! Other than that. I thoroughly enjoyed his performance as he had plenty of tones and voices and read it well.

I was voluntarily provided this audiobook for free from the author, narrator, or publisher. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.

Look out, Sully is packing!

I only have one complaint. I want more! Sully is such a great character, a standout human in a sea of zombies (and possibly nosferatu). I loved the first person, the dialogue was awesome, and secondary characters were so easy to understand. Invasion is definitely worth the read!

Good and Different

For all you Zombie genre freaks out there, like me, don't pass this one up. It's unique and has a slant that even you, I will bet money on, won't see coming. Well written with characters you can believe are actually someone similar to someone you know. It's a must read!

Strange.

Nuclear bombs and zombies aren't the only danger in this story. There's something else and it's coming for everyone that's left.
Thrilling, I really enjoyed reading this book.

I am a recent convert to the Zompoc mania, but have loved vampires for a long, long time. I didn't realize when I started this book that I would be getting a dose of both!

Aiden "Sully" Sullivan is a Veteran with a touch of PTSD, so when he needs to wind down, he heads to his family's ranch in the isolation of the Texas hill country. That is how he comes to be a survivor of a nuclear attack that has devastated his part of the world. The nukes have done a number on the electrical grid (think EMP attack) and Aiden is determined to get to his parents' home in Austin. However, when he starts out on his quest, he discovers that not only has an EMP-type event occurred, there are also people rising from the dead to attack other people.

Not wanting to believe in a zombie apocalypse, Aiden decides to call these creatures "Deaders". He quickly learns how to find them, how to kill them and mostly how to survive. Since he is basically a good guy, he helps other survivors along the way, including a dog, a family with young children and a young boy named Rayden.

But, this is not the entirety of the story! After Aiden and Rayden are imprisoned by a group of quasi-military types, he finds out that some people are disappearing from the compound. When the young mother sharing their room is killed and her young daughter taken, Aiden decides to go hunting. What he encounters can only be described as a vampire!

The story was well-written, the characters were engaging and likeable (or hateable, as the case may be!), and the action was plentiful. There was the obligatory description of weaponry that is pervasive in this genre, but not so much as to be an overload. I laughed, I cried, I empathized with the struggles as Aiden tries to reach his beloved parents.

S.W. Salzman continues to be one of my favorite narrators, especially for books about the Zompoc. He does his usual amazing job in this book and adds a lot to the story. Even the author's penchant for minute details about Sully's route to reach his parents is not boring in Mr. Salzman's capable hands!

I will admit that I didn't really care for the sound effects used in this audio version of the book. IMHO, they really didn't add anything to the story and in fact they bordered on irritating. But, all in all, a greatly entertaining book about zombies and other creatures!

Zombies & vampires & humans collide...

THEM Invasion by M. D. Massey and narrated by S. W. Salzman is an exciting take on the zombie/vampire genre. Would recommend if these are your typical read or looking for something new.

What’s it about? Aiden, aka Sully, is in town when some weird/not so good events take place with tourists and illegals. Afterwards, he heads to his cabin to help him reset due to ongoing PTSD. While hunting, he gets pneumonia. During his recovery, the zombie/vampire apocalypse begins, along with an EMP attack. His goal is to get to his parents. Along the way he meets new people, some good, some bad, and some non-human.

Once the story picks up, it’s difficult to put down. If you start listening and are thinking meh, stick with it. I listened to it in one sitting. There is some humor, along with sound effects that help to make it stand out from others in the genre. If you are a prepper or z-lover, you will probably have a better appreciation for this book. Nice to see characters who are wise instead of repeatedly doing stupid moves.

S. W. Salzman was fantastic as the narrator. This is the second book I’ve listened to him narrate and he did not disappoint. He is going to give some other very well known Sci-Fi/ Post-Apocalyptic narrators a run for their money. I look forward to his future narrations and will be adding him to my list to watch where their careers go. I enjoyed the added sound effects.

Overall, I’d recommend. It peaked my interest enough that I want to check out more in the series.

Parental advisory/trigger warnings: The beginning has a good amount of talk about illegals/border patrol/war. Some swearing throughout. Main character suffers PTSD from his time in Afghanistan. Shooting/killing of zombies/vampires with guns/weapons. Abusive step-father (physical/mental abuse). Death of humans.

*I was given a free review copy of the audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Thank you for allowing me to listen and review the book!

I honestly wasn’t expecting that!

It’s a slowish start and then it’s boom boom boom all the way, all action.

When I got to the 3rd (and biggest) revelation I actually thought, that’s overkill but it’s a fantasy apocalypse so just go with it. The story begins with Aiden Sullivan aka “Sully” he’s ex military with PTSD and a preference for his own company. Not someone I’d classify as a prepper but rather slightly paranoid ex military. Meaning he has high situational awareness and does have a stockpile of necessary items. Then again if you’re living in back woods nowhere surely that’s just common sense.

Living in Texas he’s familiar with illegal immigrants, when a stranger turns up in town looking acutely sick Or maybe just dehydrated, Sully steps up to help. It doesn’t go well, he retreats to his land but is out of commission due to illness. When he checks in on civilisation again he discovers that literally everything has changed. This the story of his travels to find his parents in Austin and the horrors that he has to deal with along the way.

Well worth reading with an easy writing style.

Good story

This was an overall good story. We get some zombie and alien? Vampire action. There was a little relationship bonding, but not really as much as I like in a dystopian novel. The line wolf thing in dystopian stories sorta defeats the purpose of a good one. I love reading about how strong relationships are forged in the hardest of times and circumstances. When you take that away you have a hollow story. It can't just be about survival. Survival needs friendship, heart and passion to make it exciting and actually worthwhile. The best parts of the story were the few times he bonded a little with others. Of course being the lone wolf he shook them off as soon as he could. And therein lies my problem so far with this story. Yep, caring for others can be an exploitable weakness, but it's also a formidable strength. It's times like these you need someone to have your back. Unless Massey changes his current lone wolf formula, it all leaves the reader feeling empty.

First, the narrative was believable. They way it was written seemed real enough, written in a manner that the one might believe that Aidan would speak.
But the action was stiff and rushed. I guess after reading DJ Molles, Nicholas Stansbury Smith and WJ Lundy, I’m a bit spoiled. Those series flowed seamlessly, giving the reader an understanding of how you got from A to B. In this book I understand that the initial problem was a nuclear attack. I don’t understand what causes the zombies much less the vampire spider crabs.
Plus there’s nothing that really connects you to the main character. He has nothing to ground him, We don’t connect with his parents until it’s too late. So we don’t have any emotions that tie us to his loss. He finds a dog surrounded by zombies and saves her, only to give her to the first family he comes across. Even with that, the father is as bland as white toast.
There’s so much opportunity to make something incredible from the premise but it was a hit and major miss.

Nukes, vampires and zombies in the same book? Why not.

It's a fun, fast read that feels a bit hurried towards the end. I hope, M.D. Massey gets a bit more into detail in the next installments. His protagonist isn't the most relatable character I've ever read about, but the no-nonsense style sure suits a mentally damaged veteran in a war-like situation.

It will be interesting to see what happens next in rural Texas. It sure is good entertainment for a quick break from work or a night-time read.

Boy am I glad this is not the first m.d. massey book I read. I know his writing is fantastic but this one would have probably scared me off from his writing. While there was some action the characters were bland. Even the action parts were a little bland.

What's hilarious is that this was the part of the series I was looking forward to the most and it just wasn't great. Thankfully I know that his writing is better than this. I know his writing can be fantastic. So while I'm saying is is by far not my favorite book I will continue on because I know it has to get better.

Wiggled its way into my psyche...

....and I had some bad dreams. But exciting. The start of the apocalypse is frightening similar to current affairs. And, I know well the roads this young man travels to reach his parents and the country he traveled through, such that as I was reading, i was considering alternate routes. Hence, the disturbed sleep. Thanks for a good adventure.

Good Start

This was a good start to this paranormal series. It was a quick and interesting read. I did have a problem with a couple of words, but that was just my personal gripe.
If you like vampires that don't glitter and zombies I think you will like this series. I gave it 4 out 5 stars. 🌟

Ex-military man from Texas must go save his parents from a zombie outbreak. Decent short story. Probably would give it a 3.5.

narrated by S. W. Salzman - not sure what I think of him. I couldn't tell if he had the character's voice down perfectly - Texas military drawl, or if that was the way he read normally. He did voice the other characters well, so I'll give him a 3.75.

Great apocalyptic thriller!

The protagonist is a kind-hearted ex-military who gets caught up in a disastrous teotwawki situation. I love reading stories that are set in Texas and this one is set very close to where I live. I enjoyed it very much and am looking forward to book 2 in the series.

tense and unique

Decent characters, lots of action, and some humor. I found it a bit unrealistic that the main character doesn’t connect with a mate. He doesn’t seem to grieve much. The author could improve character and plot development. There’s nothing about his ranch or how he’s going to stay alive long term.

Gripping and exciting start to finish.

Great start, setting everything in place and getting the atmosphere just right.
Characters are very believable and worldly.
Action is good; little muted for my liking. Would have like a bit more description on the zombie attacks.
Overall: Bloody good read and will look forward to the series. Well done matey!

Meh

Had me interested the first few pages then seemed to drag onward with no real reason of backstory tying in the events the cause of horror. I guess the next book explanation will resolve this though to me it became unnecessary filler of a tale.

Character development seemed a bit weak

Different twist on zombies and vampires. Moved a bit too fast. I would have liked to see a little more time to have past before our hero turned vigilante
