Sixty of the world's coolest and most influential women are the inspiration for this refreshing and fun collection of drink recipes that are sure to bring extra zest to your cocktail shaker. Free the Tipple pays tribute to a brilliant range of diverse women from the 20th century to today who have made waves in entertainment, the arts, politics, fashion, literature, sports, and science, including Frida Kahlo, Rihanna, Serena Williams, Virginia Woolf, Yoko Ono, Zaha Hadid, Marlene Dietrich, Zadie Smith, and more. Each double-page spread features a recipe crafted to reflect its namesake's personality, style, legacy, or what she liked to drink herself. This ranges from The Gloria Steinem, which uses a complex liquor with a radical twist, to The Beyoncé, made, of course, with lemonade. The cocktails are simple to make, kitchen-tested, and incorporate easy-to find ingredients. Snappy, informative biographies, illustrated with newly-commissioned portraits, offer revealing insights into the women's lives. This highly original guide to delicious beverages is a perfect gift for those in your life who encourage and inspire you.
I picked up Croll’s “Bad Girls of Fashion” from a library shelf and continued to work my way through her collection. I love how she pieces pop culture and history into her work, done in a way that is fun, informative and makes for interesting dialogue. This book is no exception—combining drink recipes and bartending language with inspirational women from the 21st century was an absolutely brilliant concoction 😝
Such a fun book with poppy, colorful, whimsical illustrations and each eponymous cocktail seems well-suited! I bought this in Traverse City at one of my favorite bookstores. I’m teetotaling much of 2019, but I’m itching to fix one of these cocktails up for someone!
This was truly disappointing. The recipes are all written in shots instead of ounces or mls, who writes cocktail recipes this way? Furthermore many of the cocktails are not original or basic and unimaginative. A Cosmopolitan for Cindy Sherman? Beyoncé's cocktail is merely bourbon and lemonade. Why not use soju for Margaret Cho? The more original drinks aren't that great or special either, they're also rather weak. The illustrations are beautiful and many of the women featured are inspired choices (though some bios contained inaccuracies which made me wonder if I could trust the other info in the book), but the cocktails are a huge letdown.
I received this book as a gift and absolutely love it! By now I have made most of the recipes and have enjoyed nearly all the drinks I’ve made. It has become a fun hobby of mine! There is a great mix of classic cocktails and new innovative recipes. There is also a variety of different spirits used - truly something for everyone! There are a few cocktails with rare and/or expensive ingredients but this is not the case for most of them. The artwork is beautiful and I love the descriptions of each woman that accompanies the drink. I would love to see a sequel!
Great idea - great execution! Although there are lots of cocktails in this that I probably won't ever drink, the art and texts about inspiring women are awesome. Very informative and very cool!
Loved this book. The cocktails use fresh fruit purees and homemade fresh flavoured syrups. Will definitely be working my way through the cocktails. In addition the mini biographies were so interesting that I now have lots more books I want to read.
Beautifully illustrated, historically fascinating, and palatably delightful! From the moment you open the cover of this book, it is just so much fun. I loved getting to learn about these incredible and influential women with a creative cocktail in hand — the recipes really are superb!
I bought the book for a friend and decided to read it for fun first. Who knew a cocktail recipe book could teach me so much about iconic women? As a bonus the illustrations are gorgeous.
I loved this book! My friend and I tried every cocktail, our favorite was probably the Carmen Miranda! They were fun to make and I loved trying something new every week!
A funbook. Probably not a ton of recipes I will try. And how is there not a Hedy Lamarr cocktail…what a missed opportunity. I’m sure I will think of other omissions.
