I was so delighted to receive this Digital Advanced Copy from NetGalley and Time Inc. Books. I love cookbooks (especially vintage ones) and I love all things about the South. Well this gorgeous Cookbook has it all.
This book is like a breath of fresh air! The recipes are delectable! The pictures are clear and beautiful. I enjoyed every section about all the different types of parties to be had. It's got me really excited as I love to plan and have parties. I enjoyed the "Vintage 1972" recipes from the original book too. Elizabeth Heiskell's little stories were cute and fun to read.
I feel like this book would be the perfect book for a bride-to-be or someone setting up a new home. It has wonderful hostess tips for the modern woman (or man.). I would definitely buy a hardcopy of this book. It's a keeper that I highly recommend.
Gorgeous photos, delectable recipes and practical tips! My favorites are the simple yet elegant recipes like the grilled romaine with charred lemon-feta vinaigrette, strawberries with lemon curd dip and the bourbon infused coffee milk punch. This book contains mouthwatering recipes from front to back.
I received an eBook for free in exchange for my honest opinion.
I was thrilled to pieces to be selected to review the newest Southern Living Party Cookbook. I saw my first Southern Living Party Cookbook in my beautiful Carnegie Library in my hometown in the 70s. It was my first inkling that the world was a fun, fun place. Knowing the other book so well, I was eager to see how this book would measure up to its classic sister.

I loved this new party cookbook by Southern Living. Fantastic tips, tablescapes, and recipes are abundant. #netgalley #southernlivingpartycookbook #partyrecipes My review: The Southern Living Party Cookbook by Elizabeth Heiskell is a fresh take on the classis 1972 version of the same title. Instead arranging the book by food groups, this book centers its organization on the occasion. Want to know how to entertain for Christmas? Or a picnic? Or having your boss for dinner? There are sections that will deal just with those topics! Classic recipes such as a Brandy Alexander to the posh Chocolate Chai Tea, Elizabeth has covered many recipes and includes ones from her own.
I adore the lifestyle tips and the fantastic photography that inspires you to take your party to the next level. I enjoyed hearing stories from the author's own life, and the full menus she includes for each party. I made the Chocolate Chai tea for my own little "happy fall!" party but you'll have to get the cookbook to get the recipe!
This book is THE PERFECT GIFT for the new bride or anyone who wants to take their parties to the moon and back. Information on invites, setting the table, and the all important Rsvp. No party fouls will occur with the guidance of this comprehensive text.
Kick back and enjoy a nice cup of Champagne Punch followed up with a nice dish of Chicken Salad Pastry Shells thanks to the recipes found in The Southern Living Party Cookbook: A Modern Guide to Gathering by Elizabeth Heiskell. Other recipes you will find in her cookbook include:
Almond-Butter Cookies Quick Petits Fours Deviled Eggs Herbed Hamburger Sliders Marinated Whole Beef Tenderloin Grilled Romaine with Charred Lemon-Feta Vinaigrette Hoppin' John Hushpuppies
You will also discover information concerning party etiquette, table settings and how to estimate needed food quantities. Throughout her cookbook you also find plenty of color photos depicting the recipes and party settings.
Recommend.
Review written after downloading a galley from NetGalley.
Love this book! First, the cover is gorgeous. This is not a book to hide in the kitchen cabinet. I love how this book has different party ideas and occasions. The pictures are clear and appetizing. The recipes look amazing and I can’t wait to make some for Thanksgiving. This book is the perfect hostess or bridal shower gift!
This is a great cookbook for a certain person. I am not that person. First off, our family is gluten free and mostly vegetarian, and after reading this cookbook I'm pretty sure Southern Living doesn't think anybody down south fits either of those criteria. Some recipes are accidentally gluten free and/or vegetarian (like some of the salads and desserts like ice cream) but it doesn't seem to even occur to the author that your party guests might have special dietary needs or that you should care. Food allergies are mentioned in a side note after one nut recipe ("Party Rule #2" is to ask about food sensitivities and plan accordingly, and if you have an allergy you're supposed to offer to bring a dish to share) but there is not a single recipe or menu plan in the book designed for anyone with food allergies or (heaven forbid) vegetarians or vegans.
The book assumes you should care about all of the classic old fashioned Southern etiquette rules though, so this is great if you want to know proper hostess gifts, how you're supposed to RSVP and address people on envelopes and such. It's decidedly old school and has a sort of flavor like a mixture of Martha Stewart, Miss Manners and every stereotypical middle aged Southern woman you've ever seen on a TV sitcom or YouTube skit.
Many of the recipes are from Southern Living magazine over the years, so they're pretty much guaranteed to be good. Other recipes are offered from the author and she holds herself in very high regard. The book is full of anecdotes about one famous/important person after another whom she says raved about her cooking, which I found incredibly off-putting. She tells one story about the head of NBC coming to her house for dinner when she was trying to land a guest spot on the Today show and him exclaiming about how talented she was (and she flipped her hair, flirted and played coy as a response and got the offer... I don't even know how to politely write my response to this).
I live in the Midwest but spent part of my childhood down south (Arkansas and Florida) and went to college in Kentucky. This author reminds me of the rich, entitled girls who wouldn't give me the time of day down south because I wasn't of a high enough pedigree. There's lots of "Oh, my Lord" exclamations, saying like "I was happy as a pig in mud" and talk about what Mama and Daddy used to say and the extravagant parties they threw, trash talking Texans, bragging, bragging, bragging, telling stories of her excessively privileged life, and more bragging. In the intro to one nut recipe she talks about her grandmother and her friend trash talking a woman for three days because she invited them over for drinks and hors d'oeuvres and only offered mixed nuts for the hors d'oeuvres. She talks at one point about "the lady that helped raise me" and I get the feeling her family had full time "help." She talks about her mother roasting a leg of lamb for guests after church in pearls and perfect hair, and how as a hostess you're supposed to have perfect posture, lipstick and attire. And so on.
I tend to cook for friends who just drop by and stay and talk until supper time. I entertain them in a messy house in comfortable clothes (she admonishes anyone who wears things like yoga pants when entertaining) with too much food, lots of laughter and homemade elderberry wine. This book is just not a good match for me. I'm pretty weird though, so I'm guessing it will be a good match for most others. :)
I was able to view a temporary digital ARC for the purpose of review.
I breezed through this gem of a book last night, and am looking forward to trying the recipes and using the entertainment tips. The Southern Living Party Cookbook is clear and concise, broken down into 5 sections (Teas, Coffees, and Receptions; Brunches and Lunches; Come By For A Drink Y'All; Cookouts; Celebrations and Dinners), with droolworthy photos of everything, including gorgeous tablescapes. Fun tips are scattered throughout, and this lovely volume would be great to pick up for yourself (also makes a great coffee table book!) or to give as a gift. Very nicely done!
The Southern Living Party Cookbook: A Modern Guide to Gathering by Elizabeth Heiskell is an amazing, beautiful and romantic book about Southerners traditions published by Meredith. This new guide divided per theme and precious moments to spend all together will be in grade to offer to all of you a lot of tips, recipes, new ideas for the most important occasions of your life. This book is an update of what previously lived and shared and experienced by grand-mothers and mothers of the South, precise the author with strength, focusing in particular in the great hospitality of Southerners. Chapters are: Teas, Coffees and Reception, Brunches and Lunches, Come By for a Drink Y'all, Cookouts, Celebrations and Dinners. Elizabeth remembers in this book the old times and how in their family, feasts, weddings and other important remarkable events were celebrated also thanks to the help of her grand-mother and mother. They are captivating stories of the past and the reflection of the present.
Extremely elegant, I immediately fell in love for this book because of it's wonderful pictures, tales; because it is in grade to speak at the heart and appetite of everyone! with delicious recipes, great desserts and dishes. I would classify The Southern Living Party as a good manners cookbook.
Five stars for the Southern Living Party Cookbook; A Modern Guide to Gathering! This book starts with a hosting handbook and then is divided into different types of events that someone could host. With each event there is a gorgeous picture of what the set up/ scheme could look like on the table with the amazing dishes and recipes to go along with it and I want to have a reason to host all of these events now! As a very visual person, I appreciate all the beautiful photos with the table schemes and food and drinks. With each main course, side dish and dessert there are notes and special details that include substitutions or tips to help with preserving or cooking the dish that every hostess would get from a recipe passed down or given by a true friend. I love that Elizabeth Heiskell includes a special personal story or anecdote with each event to give the reader an idea of when to have this kind of event or meal planned and how it worked for her. This book would be perfect for a newly married couple, a person starting off on their own, or just for someone interesting in new recipes or hosting certain events or special meals for friends and family. I loved it all! I received an advanced digital copy of this book to review it.
*~.Book Analysis.~* Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader :)
Rating: 5 stars Reading period: Nov. 25th, 2018 Format: ebook Source: NetGalley – I have received this book in exchange for an honest review. Release date: Nov. 20th, 2018
PROS There is a subtle art in hosting that I honestly never realized before reading this book. The author explained it all quick and simple, with no room for doubts, and also brought us the most delicious recipes for gatherings! Ooh, how I feel hungry now…
CONS I can’t eat the dishes as I read about them. Ok, kidding, this book was marvelous!
COVER ANALYSIS This is one of the most beautiful covers I’ve ever seen! The flowers and the colors give such tranquility and cutie vibes to it! Ooh, how I wish I had the physical copy on my shelves! =(
RECOMMENDED FOR Readers that love cooking and entertaining, as the tips are really useful!
The cover -- while beautiful-- was a bit intimidating for me since I'm a pretty basic party attendee :) I RSVP, and bring a gift (usually) wine, so this book was an eye opener for sure! How would I think to Feng Shui a Buffet? Having "a glass for every toast" terrifies me, so I truly appreciated a book (other than Emily Post) to give me the basics of party etiquette. The book also brought back memories of my time in the service industry -- literally how to set a table. It also had suggestions for gifts (not wine), so again, I was pleasantly surprised. Personally, there's nothing I cringe more at than being unprepared. The recipes themselves are fairly easy to make with ingredients easily obtainable (sausage and grits quiche, blushing mimosas!, and tea sandwiches that I'd love to try). All of this being said, I only wish I had a group of friends that would appreciate the effort this book encourages readers to make!
I love Southern Living books. They are always beautiful to look at with wonderful pictures. They include recipes that I love to try. This book did not disappoint. This is the perfect book if you like to entertain and throw parties. It starts with Etiquette and invites with very helpful information. One of my favorite additions to the book is buffet feng shui. It describes how to lay out a visually appealing buffet. We sometimes get in a rut of laying out our food and it gives us great ideas. It also shows a table setting fit for a queen. Labels all the different parts as well. This is all before the delicious recipes. They also included estimating quantities. This is one of the hardest things for me. The menu ideas for parties starts at Teas, Coffees and Receptions and goes all the way to Tailgates. If you like to entertain you need this book. At the end it shares ideas form the 1972 version of this book. It has been reinterpreted and updated. I think you will enjoy it.
The Southern living cookbook first came out in 1972. It was filled with tips and tricks for throwing the perfect party, host and hostess etiquette, and of course recipes. This book is not much different in what it contains but it is more up to date. Since we no longer go to back yard barbecues wearing suits, it needed and update.
There are still tons of great recipes in the book, that also have pictures. There are full party plans for barbecues, brunches, lunches, wine tasting, celebrations, dinners, and more.
The book has decorating ideas, what types of dishes and glasses to use and so much more. Everything you need for an impressive southern party.
I received this book from the Author or Publisher via Netgalley.com to read and review.
I collect cookbooks of all kinds, and like them from different regions and countries. I picked this one because it is hard to find good ones that are for parties. This one fit the bill for me. From teas, brunches, cookouts and celebrations it is in here for every party occasion. As an added bonus it has how to do invites, different drinking glasses, setting the table, food quanities and more. I am anxious to try the Pimento Cheese Biscuits with Ham, MaMa's Fried Chicken, Candied Bacon Grissini and Seven Layer Cookies. Illustrations are beautiful and appetizing in this book. I recommend it for any cook or baker. I received this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
Another home run for Elizabeth Heiskell. Gorgeous photos, feel good anecdotes, and delicious looking recipes make this a perfect book to give this holiday season. Even though I received an advanced digital copy from NetGalley, I have already preordered a signed copy from my local bookstore. The recipes are a perfect blend of old and new (brandy Alexander’s and bourbon-infused coffee milk punch, for example) and are the type of recipe that you will actually cook and bring to things, not just stare at in a cookbook. If you have her “What Can I Bring” cookbook and are wondering whether you need this one too, the answer is YES. And go ahead and buy her first cookbook Somebody Stole the Cornbread from the Dressing while you’re at it!
Thank you NetGalley for giving me an advanced digital copy in exchange for an honest review!
I love this book! It gives such great tips for how to throw a party! I think that some of the will be very helpful during the holidays to! The pictures are beautiful and rich color, which helps when making these amazing recipes. I love how it goes through simple things that you may not know like etiquette and which glasses you use for different occasions. As someone that does not host parties often this was super helpful! I loved the gift ideas for the host and the ideas for party favors, they truly included all kinds of things packed full in this cook book. I love the notes at the end of some of the recipes, it gives you helpful tips and different rules. This will be a cook book that i reach for often! I received this book from the publishers for free for exchange for my review!
This cookbook fit right in with my collection of Southern Living cookbooks. The magazine's focus on traditional recipes, while also throwing in new, innovative twists to the southern experience, ensures the reader will find some different recipes to serve the same old crowd. The author is a caterer by trade, so the recipes have been tested extensively. Pictures give serving ideas and tips. No need to wait for an occasion, this book will inspire you to have friends over just so you try a new menu.
First, I was given this book by NetGalley in exchange for a fair review. I love Southern Living Cookbooks, and own a number of them. This is another great entry with beautiful photos, interesting recipes and the stories behind them. The book covers many different types of parties from small intimate gatherings to large ones, barbecues to elegant occasions. Most of the recipes are simple and easy to follow and sound delicious. If you love beautifully illustrated cookbooks, this is a great addition to any cooks collection. This review will be posted on GoodReads, Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Facebook.
I received the review copy of this book from NetGalley, Meredith Special Interest Media/Books & Southern Living. Thank you for this opportunity to honestly review it using my own opinions 100%.
As a fan of the 1972 Southern Living Party Cookbook that was passed down to me, I have been pleasantly surprised at the content, recipes, and creative photography & food styling in this modern version of that bestselling book. The book isn't all about recipes, though that is the main content. This cookbook also has helpful tips on different gatherings, how to set the table, who and how to invite, and what types of food and drinks to serve. I was very pleased that some of my favorite original recipes from the previous book have been included. I also really loved the personal stories and anecdotes that Elizabeth Heiskell has written to intertwine the recipes. I especially enjoyed the flatlay styled photos that accompany the title pages for each gathering. They so creatively show the recipes in each section. It has really been such a joy to turn and read each page!
Although I was given a review copy of this book - I will say that I have added it to my booklist of books to own. I hope to try many of the recipes and I would also love to be able to pass this cookbook down so that my kids can remember some of our favorite recipes and gatherings too.
I received an Advanced Reader Copy from Southern Living for my unbiased opinion of the book. This entertaining/cookbook/etiquette guide is worth its weight in gold! It has everything you could possibly want in this type of book. I loved every page from the place setting, drinking glass, menu planning ideas and more! I gladly made wonder wings with cider vinegar-brown butter honey drizzle, sausage balls, bacon waffles with pecan chicken tenders, blue cheese bacon dip, she-crab soup, cheese straw tomato tartlets, bourbon balls, peach melba, frozen lemon cream, and beef fondue. The recipes were easy to read as well as follow. I didn't have a single leftover! I will be giving this book out at Christmas time and it already has become one of my most treasured entertaining reference guides!
This book was a delight to read over and try some of the Items in the book. My oldest Daughter this summer took Party Planner so we used this book to help her and she made it to State Fair this year. Our favorite items are what I decided to add pictures of so please take a look and enjoy! If you like to host parties and want to get some great Ideas this book is for you!
A very genteel and elegant way of hosting a get together. This book takes me back to my early married days when hosting guest was an occasion, with lots little touches and beautifully presented tables and food. We don't do enough of this now where I live, so this book is a lovely reminder that our guest deserve a bit of effort. The recipes in this book a lovely easy and tasty, whilst the food, in some cases, take awhile to make it all adds to the ambiance of the occasion- I guess this is what is call "Good Southern Hospitality" - yes please!
Beautiful book that is more than a cookbook! In a way this book is a mixture of party ideas, stories from the author and her life and the different parties and ideas behind them she experienced or hosted as well as a wonderful mixture of recipes and full party menu's.
I found this entire book beautiful to read through and look at the pictures alone, since honestly its just a stunningly done book!
But the recipes are also very nice and even though i haven't tried all of them -or any of the alcoholic drink ones- i am sure that they all work!
If you are interested in this book? Highly recommend it!
*Thanks to NetGalley.com for providing me with a free e-copy of this book in exchange for a free and honest review!*
