For over a decade, Rosanne Bittner has enchanted her readers with tales of adventure and romance in the times before the White Man settled the West. Now, in the tradition of Kathleen O'Neal Gear and W. Michael Gear, the bestselling author of Song of the Wolf and the Savage Destiny Indian series turns her hand to historical fiction with a wonderful new story of Native America sure to capture you and carry you on an adventure of love and hate, good and evil, life and death.
In 1833, Star Dancer, a Sichangu (Brulé Sioux), is promised in marriage to Stalking Wolf, an Oglala warrior whom she has never met. What begins as a loveless union develops into a moving story of a man and a woman led by powers beyond their control. Dreams, visions, and mystic experiences fill this provocative love story that launches a saga about the Lakota and their first meeting with the White Man.
I am a USA-TODAY best-selling author with 41 years, 76 books, and numerous writing awards behind me. My major genre is historical romance. I have always written for standard publishers but am now writing strictly for Amazon so I have more freedom to write real history. My most recent publication is SHADOW TRAIL, the 6th book in my Outlaw Hearts series. I also wrote and published my first full-length contemporary story, DANCING BENEATH YOU, in September 2022, a romance involving mystery and a depiction of reservation life in the Badlands of South Dakota. My best sellers are my SAVAGE DESTINY series (7 books) and my OUTLAW HEARTS series. See my website (www.rosannebittner.com) for details on all my books - most available for Kindle and in print. I am known for great love stories filled with real history and high emotion. I have also written many Native American stories, all based on real history.
I love American history. For those of you who have not yet read my books, my stories are generally set in the American West of the 1800s and feature vividly described, historically accurate settings that span the US from Missouri to California, from Canada to Mexico. Many of my books portray the poignant history of our Native Americans, and though the characters are my own, I use real historical locations and events in all my novels. I have also written about the French & Indian wars, American Revolution, the War of 1812, the war with Mexico (the Alamo), and the Civil War.
National magazine ROMANTIC TIMES has called me the "Queen of Western Romance" and an "emotional powerhouse." My husband and I have traveled the west for nearly 40 years and I have visited just about every location mentioned in my books.

Native American/western historical romances are my guilty pleasures. I love that genre so much and search the web to find new books every few weeks. The blurb of Mystic Dreamers is everything I look for in that genre. There is just something magical about this genre. I admire the Native American culture so much, it is just very pure and beautiful. I wish I could go back in time and spend some time in that time period.
Both Stalking Wolf and Star Dancer were very intriguing and strong characters. Star Dancer was against the marriage in the beginning because she didn't know him. She also made it very difficult for Stalking Wolf to win her over. I loved that she didn't submit to him right away. Stalking Wolf had to do his very best to impress her. It was very beautiful to see how their relationship developed, the moment he achieved to impress her and making her fall in love with him. All the side characters played an important role in this book as well. I really enjoyed this book a lot and can't wait to read what will happen next.
I started reading Rosanne Bittner for her stories about Indians. (I wanted to read about how they lived and loved without the white men involved) This is more of a Historical Fantasy. I can understand when an Indian sees a vision but when other Indians can see the vision then it becomes Fantasy. This is the 1st book in a 3 book series. It is the Best book of the entire series and as far as I can tell, the ONLY few books of hers that is told entirely from the Indian point of view. (haven't read "Song of the Wolf" it is also told by an indian) In 'Mystic Dreamers' I enjoyed learning about the Lakota Indians and how spiritual they were. The book mentions several 'visions' that each character has from beings beyond the earth that guide them. Ofcourse it seems to me the visions are mostly from days of starvation, blood letting and chanting alone ontop of Mystic mountain. There is a nice love story between the two main characters (Indians seem to change their names often so for someone like me with memory problems I kinda had trouble following who was who- Nametags please?). It was interesting to learn how indians would 'mate' and quite erotic. (maybe this was made up by author as I dont think many hidden cameras were in teepees back then) I fully enjoyed the storyline, but for the type of books I have read from this author, the storyline was definitely lacking. Perhaps written for a younger audience, this is definitely not the entrancing novels Ms Bittner is known for. (and definitely not 600 pages, maybe 80) I do not recommend the rest of the series. I was very dissapointed in the other 2 books. Mystic Dreamers Mystic Dreamers (1999) Mystic Visions (2000) Mystic Warriors (2001) I am hoping 'Song of the wolf" recaptures the true story telling magic of Ms. Bittner.
Meh, it was fine. Not spicy. Felt a little odd reading a book about Indians written by a white lady. I started skimming towards the end. Definitely a product of its time: the promiscuous woman is punished, the main male character won’t marry her because she’s worthless after having sex with him, the main female character is 15 and virginal.
Starts as the typical warrior has dream who he should marry. Arranged marriage. Bride not happy marrying stranger. But they fall in love. Then some unbelievable situations. I won't be reading the rest of this series
This authors books are always amazing, such a page turner! To have such faith in mother earth and live off of the land, could you imagine if we all did that ! Loved the ending, such faith and miracles. Starting book two.
The beginning started out good, but about halfway Bittner lost her momentum. The characters would have been stronger if Bittner spanned the book over fewer months. Although the author included some interesting details about the Lakota Nation the characters remained flat and the book read too much like a history book which focused on two lives. A novel like this could have done a better job making the people and their values/motives real.
This was my first all Indian pov story and I loved getting to put myself in the tribe and fully see life from the inside out, watching how their way of life was slowly being upset - from customs to daily life. Like many of Rosanne Bittner books, I get a history lesson along with the love story and this book kept both pretty balanced. Looking forward to book 2 to see what is in store for Buffalo Dreamer and Rising Eagle.
The entire Mystic Dreamers is about the Lakota Sioux attempting to save The Black Hills from the white man. Written from the Native American point of view, I thought many parts were very funny but it was also sad as all the Sioux wanted to do was to keep the white man out of their land. They still have refused to sell the Black Hills. Good read!
Light and fluffy. Inaccurate at times but for the target audience it's forgivable. Not something I'd recommend to anyone that has a real interest in Lakota heritage but it's a quick, light romance.
I absolutely fell in love with this book. The three books in the series in the series are great but this one, which is the first one is by far the best of the bunch.
Rosanne Bittner delivers the greatest history lesson you will ever learn. The Sioux were a proud and fierce people who lived, conquered and where determined to keep their land.
I wish I hadn't read to long to read this book, it was very good and better than I thought it would be. One of those little surprises that lies on the shelf waiting to be discovered.
This was an awesome read. Well researched and well told. It came across as more as a narrated story than a deep emotional tale told by the characters, but still, this was an excellent read.
