German philologist and folklorist Jakob Ludwig Karl Grimm in 1822 formulated Grimm's Law, the basis for much of modern comparative linguistics. With his brother Wilhelm Karl Grimm (1786-1859), he collected Germanic folk tales and published them as Grimm's Fairy Tales (1812-1815).

Indo-European stop consonants, represented in Germanic, underwent the regular changes that Grimm's Law describes; this law essentially states that Indo-European p shifted to Germanic f, t shifted to th, and k shifted to h. Indo-European b shifted to Germanic p, d shifted to t, and g shifted to k. Indo-European bh shifted to Germanic b, dh shifted to d, and gh shifted to g.

This jurist and mythologist also authored the monumental German Dictionary and his Deutsche Mythologie .

Much smaller in comparison to other works by the Brothers Grimm, The Turnip is a story about humility and greed.

This one fell very short for me and it's lucky to get even a two star rating. This seemed very much that this story was missing it's ending, and there didn't seem to be much moral throughout the story, nor anything really of meaning.

Maybe I'm expecting too much from a children's faerie tale, but considering some of their other works, this felt incredibly bland.

The initial premise of the story was intriguing, but the ending left a sour taste. The poor brother manipulated the student's desire for wisdom to escape his own predicament, leaving the innocent student in a potentially dangerous situation.

Don't expect a good turn. Some people are fortunate but you can't always expect the same fortune.

Jacob Grimm, alongside his brother Wilhelm, is renowned for compiling "Grimm's Fairy Tales," a collection of German folktales. This book is a captivating journey into the heart of folklore, presenting a mixture of enchanting and sometimes dark stories that have fascinated readers for generations. Grimm's work is not just a mere collection of tales; it's a profound exploration of the human condition, morals, and the cultural heritage of Germany. The stories range from the well-loved "Cinderella" and "Snow White" to the less known but equally intriguing tales. Each story is a masterpiece of fantasy, imbued with timeless themes and moral lessons, making this book a valuable treasure for both young and adult readers. Jacob Grimm's contribution through this compilation has left an indelible mark on literature and continues to inspire the imagination of readers worldwide.

The original tale is much better but also darker then the version kids see.

It is different but not that different from what you might remember from first hearing this tale as a kid.

The plot here are very good but also dark which is the mix which I personally like a lot.

The writing style here was very old and you could feel the vibe of old the Europe which was amazing for me.

This is the kind of tale where it ends up in an unexpected place that doesn't feel connected at all to any kind of moral. Our poor brother is industrious and makes a lot of money off a large turnip. His greedy, rich brother is envious and wants to kill him after a series of events. The last part of the poor brother tricking a random student doesn't add to the story, except to show how the poor brother is clever. It's not an appealing tale, but the surprising randomness was half welcome.

The ending was really awful for a fairy tale. The protagonist deceived an innocent but ridiculously naive student passing by. That's where the story fell flat to me. None of the villains like the murderers or the wicked rich brother paid for their crimes in Grimm fashion. The protagonist simply escape. At least the student is only stuck and not dead. That is the only positive at the end.

This, and the last story, give me a glimmer of why people view Grimm more grimly. For all the good luck the brother got from the turnip... now in a sack he cons the student out of a bit of wisdom by exchanging fortunes... unless I misunderstood... I don't see why.

An old farmer planted some turnips in his garden. He notices one of them is growing much larger than all of the others. He knows that he must pick it to eat for supper. He tries pulling the turnip, but it is too large for him to handle. He gets help from his wife and it is still too big. The dog and the boy come to help, thinking they will for sure be able to pick the turnip, but it is also too much to handle. It isn't until the hen and rooster come in and help pull the turnip. The tale shows how teamwork is important with any task there may be.
