This book looks good enough to eat in of itself. It is a lovely read, and I was surprised to find that the recipes really stand strong too. As a very shakey baker myself, I found many of these recipes WORKED for me (!) - and the scones recipe (in the Classic English Tea) is the most successful (and tastiest) scone recipe I have ever used. There are tonnes of ideas for unusual afternoon teas in this book, and it wold make a lovely gift for anyone with an interest in entertaining. The photos are exceptionally attractive.
My descent into afternoon tea madness. 😂 Never thought that my interest in Chinese tea ceremony would bring me into the Western tea zone. If you are into tea and food, or just at a loss of ideas for entertaining your guests, or preparing that special day for your kid, this book might interest you. It is basically a compilation of themed tea parties (some of them very quirky, like a teddy bear tea party 😃) with beautiful photos of food and European tea ware. What I enjoyed about this book is the way various teas are paired with food (both sweet and savoury) and drinks (alcohol and non). I’ve tried one recipe so far (savoury scones with rosemary, in the photo), and they turned out all right (me not a baker person at all). Other recipes look accessible, and the only reason I haven’t tested them yet is that I try not to eat refined sugar these days, so am leaving them for those rare sugar moments (or until I find a way to substitute refined sugar in my cakes).
Oh, how I love these tea books! So many recipes to try! Has tea sandwiches and many desserts, and other wonderful dishes to serve with your favorite tea!` Photos were so mouthwatering!
A delightful book dividing recipes and teas into a variety of themed tea parties. There is a smattering of background information and plenty of enticing photographs for each theme, treat, and recommended tea. Ideal for the host who wants to impress friends or family who also appreciate a cup of tea. Themes cater to a variety of guests, from the younger Teddy Bear’s Picnic, to the fresh Floral Garden Tea, to the mature Champagne Tea. Most of the recipes are easy to execute and find ingredients for, making this book an option for the host starting to entertain. A small number of ingredients may be harder to find, requiring ingredient or recipe substitutions.
I appreciated the pairing of teas with the selection of edible treats - the reason I borrowed the book from the local library. Before purchasing any book with recipes, my rule of thumb is try a few recipes to make sure they work and there shouldn’t be too many recipes that overlap with books already owned. The diversity and simplicity of recipes in Afternoon Tea Parties nailed the requirements on both accounts.
I wish I'd read this book first on my tea party cooking book tour. This book lays out sample menus for tons of different occasions along with suggestions for decorations. These menus are simple, look easy to make and produce impressive spreads. Very approachable book for people looking to hold a tea party for any occasion!
There's a full color picture for each recipe in this book, and a lot of them look really tasty. I think I'll skip the chocolate and prune mousse, though!
Made a couple of the cake recipes and was pleased with how they turned out as well as the simplicity of ingredients. I would probably check it out from the library again to try the scone recipes.
