There's a great buzz around Korean food right now, as more and more people experience the fantastic, robust flavors of both classic Korean cooking and the Ameri-Korean strand that has developed from it. There are no better authors than Da-Hae and Gareth West to introduce this flavorsome cuisine - Da-Hae uses her Korean background to explain the details of traditional recipes, and Gareth shows how Korean and Western flavours can be fused together to create really delicious combinations.
From a run-down on the basics of Korean cooking, including now readily available sauces, pastes and other ingredients, to chapters on kimchi and the etiquette of the famous Korean BBQ, to recipes for everything from the irresistible Bulgogi Burger and spicy, sticky spare ribs to Panjeon (seafood pancakes) and corn on the cob with kimchi butter, this book is packed with inventive, delicious recipes that will open your eyes to how great modern Korean food is.
A very good overview of the important foods for Korean culture and kitchens. I found it understandable (not being Korean familiar) and wide enough to give a broad range of dishes, tastes and types of ingredients. Worth reading.
Really well done Korean cookbook. Wide variety of foods broken down into easily doable recipes. Cute personal stories with each recipe, and a fair amount a good pictures (though I wish there was one for every recipe.
With just a handful of ingredients - that one can easily source off Amazon or a local H Mart - this Korean cuisine can start to make the weeknight family rotation. I think this will absolutely find a place next to “Korean BBQ” by Bill Kim as my go-to Korean food cookbooks.
Picked this up at the library and after gorging myself for three days straight, I’ve ordered it from my local bookstore. I couldn’t get enough of the sticky, spicy pork ribs (p105), need a hose to put out this fire, and the spoon pizza (p202) never too much cheese please, plus I washed it all down with Baesuk Martinis (p195) dessert in a glass or pitcher😜
The cookbook was good, it just wasn't anything new that I hadn't seen easier or better in one of the other 2 cookbooks. I do wanna write down some of the sauces though, because those were different and looked really good. But after I get those I'll just return this one. I would like to try their stanf though, because they definitely know what they're talking about.
I don't know much about Korean food in general and this book was a very good induction. There are a lot of tasty looking recipes that don't seem to difficult to make. I think the hardest part about trying to make any of the recipes would be finding certain ingredients.
So now I am very hungry and craving Korean BBQ and ramyun! This book is full of information about Korean food and cultural tidbits as well as gorgeous photos of the dishes.
In the net age, good cookbooks need to be super impressive, or full of fun tidbits. This one leans more towards the latter and the recipes feel very comprehensive. Solid addition.
I have been fascinated with Korean food and cooking ever since discovering http://www.hmart.com/ the Korean supermarket chain in the United States. This book is a wonderful combination of street food and home cooking...great fun to read. Highly recommended.
I love Korean food and this brings in a whole new take on it. It's less traditional, but more modern combined with the traditional food. I highly recommend it if you are looking into a little bit different Korean food!
