Another over the top love story by Barbara Cartland and I love it. Ancella is left alone after her father dies and the doctor recommends her as a companion to a Princess in Monte Carlo. There she meets the Prince who has a Marchioness trying to trap him in Marriage. The Princess is older and is addicted to gambling and she takes the young h to help her gamble. The heroine is a little clairvoyant and knows the numbers before they appear. She only helps a man who needed the money for his sick wife. There is an evil henchman and a touch of madness and dastardly plots galore. But if course their love took them to the Heavens and rapture!!! So cheesy and I love it so much. 😍

It's been a long time since I've read a Barbara Cartland book. I am not a romance reader. This one I picked up in a stack of old books I had in storage. Someone had given me a box of books and I was sorting through. I picked it up and started at the first page, found it interesting and decided to read through. This one didn't have a lot of the usual heart fluttering, heaving and such.
The story line is of a young lady whose father passes away leaving her a small allowance to live on. Being single, she cannot live alone. She finds she has two choices: go to live with her strait-laced spinster aunts and probably become like them under their strict control, or take a position as a nurse-companion for an aging Russian princess. She chooses the Russian princess and finds herself living among the extremely rich society of Monte Carlo.
She chooses to masquerade as a plain English girl, rather than use the title of Lady which is hers by birth. She finds the beauty of the Cote d'Azure intoxicating, the people fascinating, intrigue happening among the social set. She also finds that the son of the Princess is more than she ever imagined in a man. But even though she is taken with him, would ever fall in love with her, not knowing that she also has social status in line with his?
A scheming Marchioness, who has a lover on the side, has the Prince in her sights. Will she win him? What is the story of the bitterness the Princess expresses towards men and the extreme protectiveness she has of her son?
The story moves along at a good pace and is an easy read.

The heroine’s name Ancella is Angel in greek and Hell refers to the den of iniquity that some people in the 19th century, referred to Monte Carlo as.
The heroine’s father, an Earl has passed away. The heroine has just spent the past year nursing him and is on he point of exhaustion.
She is advised by their doctor, who is a family friend, to recuperate in the sunshine. Since the heroine is poor, although aristocratic, the Doctor finds her a ‘job’ as nurse companion to a Russian princess in Monte Carlo. The Princess’ illness is mostly psychosomatic and her duties will not be arduous.
So the heroine is excited to go. She doesn’t use her title since she will be employed. The Princess seems really old and though she can walk constantly lies in bed or is in a wheelchair. She is also a gambler.
Basically she wants the heroine to accompany her to the casinos at night and place her bets for her. So yes, its a cushy job.
While at the villa, the heroine overhears 2 houseguests speaking. One of them is a Marchioness, who is in love w the other man, but since they are both poor, they are plotting for her to marry the Prince, the son of the princess, since he is very rich. The heroine has so far not met the prince but feels bad that he is being used in this way.
That night at the casino, the Princess tells the heroine to look for her son, the Prince, and call him to her. The heroine has no idea what he looks like but when she sees a very handsome man talking to the Marchioness she somehow knows it is him. When she approaches, their eyes lock and its love at first sight for both of them 😍😍😍
Anyway the heroine manages to pass her message then goes back to the Princess. While waiting she is even able to help a stranger win back the money he lost. She is somehow fey that way but doesn’t want anyone to know.
The next day she and the Prince manage to meet and they arrange a secret rendezvous, where they both realize they have found a special love. They decide to keep it to themselves in the meantime, because aside from the OW Marchioness, the Princess is very very jealous of her son.
The jealousy she used to have over her husband has now transferred to her son. She actually hates the Marchioness and suspects her of trying to marry the Prince. But she still does not suspect that it is the heroine whom her son loves.
The Princess hates the Marchioness so much that she reads her mail, and when she sees that the Marchioness has written to someone that she will marry the Prince, the Princess goes to confront her in a jealous rage and falls down the stairs.
The Princess dies before the doctor can arrive. The houseguests have all left including the Marchioness. Obviously her plan to catch the Prince failed.
When the doctor finally comes, he addresses the heroine as Lady Ancella, he explains to the Prince that he will take the heroine back to England and that she was only in Monte Carlo for a rest cure. The Prince instead says he has already called an old cousin to come stay and chaperone the heroine who he intends marry. So he invites the doctor to stay for a mini vacation as well while he brings his mother’s body back to Russia.
He tells the heroine he wants ro get married as soon as he returns and he wants them to go live in the US since its a more modern country. 😁
So yey at least they will have escaped the Russian revolution in a few years time! 😁❤️
