The annual BOOM! Box Mix Tape is an eclectic collection of stories featuring beloved characters from established BOOM! Box series as well as original stories showcasing up-and-coming creators and brand-new content. With original stories featuring Lumberjanes, Giant Days, Cyanide & Happiness, Goldie Vance, The Backstagers, and many more! Collects the BOOM! Box Mix Tape 2014, 2015, and 2016.
A mild graphic anthology of mild short stories. I picked this up because some of the stories feature characters from Boom! series that I have previously read, like Lumberjanes, The Backstagers, Midas Flesh, and Slam!. Mostly I got it for the two Giant Days stories by John Allison, which turned out to be just okay. And that sums up the whole anthology: none of it is bad, but it is all just okay.

A nice quick read, I am always a fan of Boom! Studios comics, and this was no exception. This is a compilation of the Boom! Box Mix Tape collections from 2014, 2015, and 2016, which each contain several short comics from their previous series as well as some stand alone stories. I enjoyed being able to read some new stories in some series that I already read, such as Giant Days and Lumberjanes, getting a look at some longer series that I have been meaning to look into, such as The Midas Flesh and Slam!, and being introduced to some completely new creators. Some of the individual comics were better than others, but overall it was a very strong collection with some cute stories.
This collection was super fun and served as a great sampling of all of the different artists/authors included. Each story, even if it was from a specific series was easy to jump into and a great introduction to each author. While I didn't love all of the stories, I really enjoyed all the different art styles and differing genres. There were more than a few that I immediately wanted more of, or wished they had continued, which is the best feeling to have when reading a collections such as this.
There were definitely some stand outs that make the collection worth reading overall and if you want a taste test of some of the featured series, this is a great way to find out if you enjoy the characters and art style.
I like having a mix of shorts from established BOOM! series, as well as the original stand-alone comics. I did like that everything was pretty short, and it was REALLY cool to see a 'Giant Days' short as illustrated by John Allison! That was my favorite part of this book.
A lot of these stories are pretty juvenile, and the humor doesn't quite hit the same for me as in other BOOM! Box titles. It was a quick read, but nothing I'm likely to pick up again.
I wish I'd read the description of this book before reading the 2014 mix tape, because it was included within this edition (along with the 2015 and 2016 mix tape). I guess that's less of a review and more of a tsk at my past self.
I have to just split the middle and say 2.5 rounded up... The haunted house comics, Lumberjanes, and Goldie Vance, I loved. The rest were not to my taste.
A very mixed bag. Took me forever to reach half of the book before I decided to put it aside. I think I only really like two stories: one about dinosaurs and the other about a haunted house. The rest was quite a mess, maybe it was because there is a limit to how much you can do in such a little space. All and all, I was expecting to have an idea of all the possibilities that BOOM! but ended up being a disappointment.
A mixed bag for me, some really cute short comics, but some that didn’t work for me too. Good idea though, a nice way to sample Boom comics with little commitment.
A mixed bag of boom box characters. Loved the introduction to them all. Although the stories were too short to actually know anything about them. Special mention to misunderstood haunted house.
