Frank Burt Freidel was a professor of history at Harvard University and the first major biographer of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He received his B.A. (1937) and M.A. (1939) from the University of Southern California before graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1942 with a doctorate in history. He taught at a number of colleges before joining the faculty of Harvard University, where he taught from 1955 until his retirement in 1981.
A gem of a book and an illustrative look at the country’s presidents. The edition I have goes up to Gerald Ford. I with periodicals and nice collector encyclopedic or reference books were still published in this era.
My favorite part of reading this book was the photography and art they displayed in this book. Good book to remind people of the American struggles throughout the years past. Pick this book up in this edition if you find it.
Gives a short-chapter illustrated view of each president. Context: written 40 years ago, it pre-dates the current polarized political age, and avoids a particular political slant in its narrative.
This was an interesting book that stuck mostly to the facts instead of editorializing. The little bit of opinion that did make it in tended to be rose-colored, but not so much so that it was off-putting. Overall, I enjoyed the brief look back at American history from a 1970's perspective.
