Southern Baked: Celebrating Life with Pie

A decidedly Southern take on sweet and savory pies for celebrations of all kinds, even quiet dinners at home.

Pies are perennial, but no one ever claimed they're easy to make. Amanda Dalton Wilbanks, owner of The Southern Baked Pie Company in Georgia, wants to change that. With only one pastry recipe, pies of every size can be made for any meal: full-size, mini, tassies, and handheld pies both savory and sweet.

Each chapter features a full menu centered on a holiday or occasion, with recipes for side dishes, appetizers, and more to complement the flavors of the starring pie.

Amanda Wilbanks opened her first retail bakery in Gainesville, Georgia, in 2012. Southern Baked Pie Company now has three retail locations in Georgia and a distribution center for shipping pies across the country.

I fully expected this cookbook to just be recipes of pies and desserts based on the title, so I was pleasantly surprised to see it covered a lot more. Wilbanks talks about how she learned to cook and make pie and how her business, Southern Baked Pie Company, was born. But, in this cookbook she breaks the recipes down into meal ideas based on the month of year and any holidays or special occasions in that month. This makes for a very well-rounded cookbook with TONS of recipes (both sweet and savory) that I want to try. I also like that in the first section of the cookbook she gives her basic pie dough recipe and lots of tips for making pie and different ways to use the dough. Overall, a great cookbook with much more than pie recipes.

Southern Baked: Celebrating Life with Pie is a very serviceable pie book. Every recipe is predicated on the on the authors signature pie dough. Interestingly, while so many pie dough recipes make use of a food processor, this one does not.

The recipes themselves are not divided by commonality, but rather by month of the year. Each month has a theme and 5-6 recipes for a complete menu within that theme.

I appreciate that every recipes is accompanied by a beautiful photo, but I did not find the cookbook to be my cup of Southern tea.

Even though pie is a star in this book, there are also recipes for meats, sides & salads that don't use pie dough. The one & only pie dough recipe in the book is used for both sweet & savory pies, as well as put to other uses such as cookies or tiny appetizers. Recipes are relatively simple, with no fancy techniques, very down-to-earth & appealing. The author writes in a comfortable conversational style, so it feels like you're sharing recipes at the kitchen table over a cup of sweet iced tea. Recipes are in groups of 5-6 organized by month. Great photos for every recipe!

Enjoyed it more than expected. I now have a TON of recipes that i'll be trying out. Glad to see more than just straight up pie (or use pie dough/pastry) recipes in here.

This is a very good cookbook with included recipes that go beyond those of the pies. The photography in the book is excellent too.

Some very nice photos and recipes, but it didn't really appeal to me too much.
