This didn't really tell me anything I didn't already know just based off seeing the movie Frida. And I also thought that there was a lack of mention of Frida in this. But Diego's art is gorgeous and I liked getting to see some more of it.
This story is biographical information about Diego Rivera. It shares not only his life story but some of the art work he has created.
The combination of Diego Rivera's artwork and the illustrations Mike Venezia incorporates are the key elements to this book. Any biography can have factual information about Diego Rivera's life along with duplicates of his portraits, but this particular version combines these elements with cartoon illustrations. This makes this particular book the best suitable biography for young readers. It allows them to connect with art work by Rivera but also allows the text to be painted by illustrations that Mike Venezia has created.
Picture this. 7th grade English class. Time to do a book report.
I have to write a biography about an artist? Aw, man! I don't know about any artists. I guess I'll pick the Latino guy on the list since Mexican boys are cute (yes, that was my boy-crazy, hormonal rationale).
I picked this book. I read it. I learned a little about Frida Khalo. I survived.
This was pretty good for its audience. It doesn't shy away from his controversial side. There were pictures of other artists' paintings in the book too to show Cubism and other works being done around the same time as Diego was painting.
