The Survivalist #9

Conflicted Home

Rate this book
The only possible thing that could make Morgan’s world even more difficult has happened. The Chinese fleet off the coast of California was wiped out. An event that Morgan and friends and family only knew about because of the radio broadcasts from the Radio Free Redoubt. So far removed from them, it barely warranted notice. That is until the Chinese retaliated by launching a nuclear counter-strike against Mac Dill Air Force base. This did warrant their attention, and had the potential to profoundly impact their lives. As bad as the fear of nuclear fallout was, it wasn’t the only threat still haunting northern Lake county. With proof that the Russians had, at a minimum, pathfinder units on the ground, and discovery of Cuban forces cooperating with them, something had to be done. After encountering armored units and realizing they were ill equipped to deal with the threat, the old man called for help. The call was answered, but would require a near impossible trip by truck to Eglin Air Force base. America was certainly on the ropes, but she wasn’t down yet.All Morgan wants to do is protect his family and friends. To restore a normal sense of life. To see to it that Mel and his girls are safe and protected. He doesn’t want to get involved in these military actions. He’s more focused on trying to restore power to town. But his goals are, to use a military expression, overtaken by circumstances, and Morgan and his friends are once again compelled to get involved. And this time, it will cost them.

Morgan Carter’s story continues as the US is fighting invasion on multiple fronts. With the Chinese nuking Mac Dill Air Force base and having had a run-in with Russian Pathfinders, Morgan’s group realize they are sorely under-protected. They must think about more than the day-to-day activities of bringing a community back to some semblance of before.

American’s ninth novel it The Survivalist series, Conflicted Home has both new hope and joy along with tragedy and sorrow. In fact, it is probably the best in the series as far as the story goes. I’m loving the character development of the members of Morgan’s group. The world building is so good that I have no trouble picturing the scenes in my mind.

Unfortunately, it was riddled with typos. I quit marking them after the 19th one. That is very distracting and I finally had to force myself to just read over them. I’m not sure what happened but hiring a good proofreader or starting an ARC Facebook group would have weeded most if not all of these errors out before publishing. I find it curious that after nine novels in the series that one would be so poorly edited.

There is at least one plot hole. Sarge insists that the General wants to see Morgan. Yet, when they meet the General is almost surprised to see him and says nothing to indicate he was summoned. I even went back and reread those parts to see if I had missed something.

I love this series and hope that the next installment isn’t rushed.

3 out of 5 stars based on sloppiness.

Really enjoyed the beginning of this series ( I can't believe this is already book 9) but if I am being honest the storytelling has been going downhill for a while now.

Pages and pages go by describing insignificant banter and interactions. It reads more like a screenplay with "I walked to the corner of the room and turn around and flipped him the bird, he grinned, I winked then we both laughed before I went outside to slop the hogs".... "the hogs were foul smelly creatures but were happy to see me because of the food I brought..."

Rinse and repeat. This series is about 7 books past its' prime.

I read a lot of dystopian prepped fiction. This particular series appeals to me because I grew up in Central Florida, camped almost 1/3 of my life (until age 18) throughout that part of the state, have strong family ties in Perry, and am now retired military. Touches mighty close to home even though I left there long ago. It also appeals to me because I know so many people like those in this series. A American would have my back because I can hear and feel and know he ain't BSing about what he writes. Best I can do is tell him he does right by all of us. Thank you.

What I enjoy about these books is how they make me wonder what I would/could do in similar situations, (which, nowadays, do not seem beyond the realm of possibility). Of course, I doubt that I would ever have access to military aid and their hardware, and I have little skill working with my hands. But I would hope to keep my family and myself from descending into barbarism if we should ever reach a SHTF situation.

I also care about the characters and what happens to them. Currently, the ones who interest me the most are Sarge and Dalton. I have always really liked Thad, as well.

Sometimes, though, I think that some of the characters' moral choices are just wrong. For example, I understand that Morgan was very upset that two drifters killed and cooked his dog. But I don't think he had the right to execute them for it. Also, it was right to hang Bobbie's killers, but it was over the top to shoot Micha's corpse in the face.

This series is better than any book I have ever written, which is none. That being said, one would think that A. American would do a better job of proofreading and editing. Here is a short list of errors in this volume alone:

1) The characters of Gena and Dillon sometimes appear as "Gina and Dylan."
2) A couple of times, Miss Kay was referred to as "Kate."
3) When Judge Mitch married Aric and Fred, he asked Fred is she took MITCH as her husband.
4) The author frequently uses dependent clauses and phrases as sentences.
5) The writing is full of dangling participles.
6) And I don't care if it is becoming more common, "alright" is not a word.

Despite all this, I will finish the series.

There’s an old saying that goes something like; If the situation hasn’t been bad enough for Morgan, family, and friends, it could always be worse. After successfully repelling DHS advances coming close to home, I thought our boys deserved a break for a job well done. Well, that’s not going to happen. Rumors of Chinese and Russian troops getting “boots on the ground” were bad enough, but now we have Cuban armor and soldiers getting into the act. Relief supplies have begun coming in from NATO allies but one such ally thought they would slip in a few tanks and APC's, which caused quite the uproar. An eye-for-an-eye exchange leaves Mac Dill Air Force base in ruins, and the threat of fallout a reality. Those Cuban troops thought they would share some shock and awe as well, leaving one of our group in a body bag. Escalation and reprisal on a local level lead to some old-fashion justice. Eventually things quiet down and our “family of survivors” are able to enjoy a double wedding! In closing, we are given a glimpse of a bright light in the midst of darkness, as electricity returns to a small part of northern Lake county.

In the series of ten novels, I just finished this one and it was a satisfying read. Life in the After (after an EMP) is returning to normal, but not without new threats to order and peace. The author includes people of all ages, races, and sexes and how they present themselves to each new day's challenges. Without giving any major Spoilers in this briefest of reviews, suffice it to say that civilization, as the characters once knew it, is reappearing. How does a society come back anew after complete chaos? This series gives us a look at how it might happen. I am somewhere between Liked It and Really Liked It on this installment of the series, but I'll side with Really Liked It as "mostly true" for me.

I finished "Conflicted Home" by A. American (2017), the 9th book in the series. This one has extremes of both hope and tragedy for the group, with a main character getting killed off but also major and minor steps being taken to bring civilization back, at least one day. The odd punctuation errors from the last two books are greatly reduced in this one, but every once in a while a quotation mark appears in the middle of a sentence, randomly. The use of the wrong homophone occurred at least once that I recall (a boy is described as "toe headed" instead of towheaded), but these errors aren't enough to ruin the read for me. Indeed, I can read the whole book in one day because of how much I enjoy the story.

A American does it again

Another outstanding book in the survivalist series. Follow the group as they slowly but surely overcome disaster and rebuild their community. I've followed this series from the beginning, buying each new book in paperback format as they came out. I have never been disappointed in any of the books. The action and situations encountered in this series by the characters is both plausible and likely in the throes of a collapse. If you haven't read this serie
s I highly recommend it.

Great series, but, lackluster installment. There really wasn't much to Conflicted. Hardly any large plot events, and should really have been combined with whatever comes next. The entire book was merely build-up with one climactic event, followed by more ansillary events. It was still well written, if not a bit too much minutia; but, I would have been happier if he'd cut down on the moment-to-moment and focused more on the major events of the series' plot.

Outstanding

I love this series, each book I read gets better and better if that's possible! Well written, action packed from beginning to end, twist and turn thrown in. The character development is brilliant, I have ended each book feeling as I have known them forever. What would you do if am emo hit, how would you survive and who would you align yourself with?

A gathering of ideas and a bit more back on course

Conflicted Home is a quick read returning more to the steady story telling of the earlier installments. Impressive character development continues and some events undo the fable telling everything turns out good a reader might be lulled into. Definitely reading made me eager to start reading Home Coming (vol 10) the last volume.

Do like the series, but feel A American is groping for a story line now. Loved the survivalist start to the series, and the darker side of humanity and how fast things dissolve. The last 2 instalments have tailed of into more of a military story. As much as I enjoyed one mans arduous journey to get back to his home and family, his new role of protector against Chinese, Cubans and Russians is stretching it a bit.
My lowest score for the series, yet I will persist .

Reality described before the current lost ways of our society

This series is a roadmap for how life could be before the diversion from the real path of life where right and wrong are clearly delineated.
There is no long, drawn out legal maneuvering, the solution to bad behavior is rapidly meted out and hard work is rewarded, mimicking the perfection of the nature and the animal world.

Great fiction

One of the very best authors and series in the genre. Dialog is technically accurate and believable, and I actually remember the characters between the releases of the book. Recommended.

My only suggestion relates to the author's page on Amazon , a chronological list of books in the series would help remind which books have already been read.

I love this series

I'm so hooked on these books, I love all of the characters and story lines. The author does a great job pulling you into the story. I also enjoy that he puts bits of info that could be useful for anyone to know if things ever did go bad. Can not wait for book 10.

What a great read! Tears are still in my eyes, as this intrepid group loses one of their own. But as the song says, “But life goes on.” Weddings occur and hope comes in the form of food and other supplies that are fetched back for the area. Sarge gets his due, and we are left, waiting impatiently, for the next installment of this fantastic journey.

Another great installment

So glad to see new books from this series. So sad when I finish each book. The community continues to grow and face challenges. Can't wait till the next. Start from the beginning, it won't make as much sense if you don't. Well worth reading them all. Accurate and action filled.

Excellent

I love this series and I am learning so many things about how we did things in the past. It is a treason to see how much knowledge about medicines and conventional things we are so accustomed to having at our fingertip. So many lost knowledge that gets resurrected in desperate times. A pleasure to watch the human spirit not only to survive but to thrive.

I liked the additional relationship-building and the certain coupling up of some of the characters.

I was disappointed again with the poor writing and grammar, especially the fact that one of the character's names was even written wrong in a few places!

Now I need to finish the last one, book #10, so I can gracefully close the lid on this series.

Another great read

This one was sneaky good. Just when you think that you can relax you can’t, there’s always something coming your way something to deal with. The Bobbie incident was just too much I could feel Danny’s pain. This one was an emotional roller coaster. You’re going to love Tops role as well.

This series is a great story of survival. The main character had been an avid reader on how settlers had 'made' various ways of preserving food, finding edible plants and not wasting anything. This came in handy to help them survive a little better than others. Most of the events and story line are pretty believable.

I love this series

It is great to see some happiness in the story and it sucks to see the sad. Hope Danny comes out okay. I will be impatiently waiting for the next one to come so we can see what happens with the crew.

One of the best in an outstanding series.

I read a lot of the post-apocalypse genre. A American is one of the very best storytellers today. I always anxiously look forward to the next installment. I hope the series never ends.

Laugh, cry and get angry!

With each book in this series, I fall more in love with the characters. I will say I cried more in this book than I did in most of the others. I'm scared what will come next. A must READ!!

This is the final book in this series. The story is interesting and engaging. The characters are well developed and believable. If you have an interest in dystopian novels you will like this series.
