Two bad communicators are bad at communicating, basically, although really Akatsuki is the one at fault. Having decided to go on his dinner not-a-date-to-him with his new assistant, Uneda, Fumi winds up at Gorou’s.

Which brings the whole issue of Gorou’s crush (or not) on Fumi back again, perhaps a bit more so than his teasing from before. But Gorou’s played his cards close to his chest from the start and continues to be very unclear with how serious he might be.

And I like this whole mess because it addresses an important aspect of these sorts of rival stories that rarely gets talked about. A lot of times? These rivals are already good friends and that doesn’t get enough focus.

For Akatsuki, whose friend group is one person and that’s it, this is a pretty big deal. There isn’t an explicit conclusion on Gorou’s interest in Fumi, you have to draw your conclusions, but you can see that he knows where her heart is and acts accordingly.

It’s what makes this story good - it examines these people and their motivations and they feel like they make sense. And nothing is so over with that it can’t be brought back for another story moment.

Fumi bumping into Katsura, the other woman who tried to get her paws on Akatsuki earlier, might be a big coincidence, but the resulting chapter is pure gold. It gives both women some closure, Fumi some encouragement, and it’s just a really fun way to get Fumi to realize a few things. It’s a high point of the volume.

Everything comes to a head at a fancy event, as usually happens, when our leads are pushed back together, more or less literally. This has the neat effect of wrapping up two rivalries in one gasp and then paying off the reconciliation in some reasonably cute moments.

As far as these characters go, it all plays out believably. Akatsuki and his really terse interpersonal skills did cause most of this drama and it makes sense that it takes him a very, very long time to realize.

Having him also realize how serious he is about Fumi at the same time does help to kind of soften that blow a bit. And Fumi gets to be right about Uneda, which leads to a pretty nice moment at the end, arguably nicer than some people deserve.

It’s not the best the story has been, but it’s a very satisfying conclusion to the whole arc that felt like it was based on what we already know about the characters. There are no wildly unexpected turns, just good writing.

4 stars - still really solid, maybe more than it deserves given the subject matter, but dang if it isn’t a really great read most every time.

Finally, a really good volume for this series. And I'd been starting to wonder if it was a mistake to be buying up all of Yamamori's work.

The art is lovely, for one; while it's still not quite at In the Clear Moonlit Dusk standards, I think I can see the artistic progression? Fumi looks gorgeous and very grown up throughout this volume - and not only because of the dress and makeover Gorou enlists his stylist for. She's just very...poised. Something about her posture and how she carries herself shows that, even with her age and inexperience, you can really see the woman she's going to be. Someone who, finally, I can understand being a good fit for Akatsuki.

I appreciate that no one is really a villain in this series. Uneda's rivalry over Akatsuki's affection is unintentional; she has no idea he's already taken or that Fumi is the other woman. She doesn't exactly bow out graciously, at first, but she does apologize to Fumi, and they laugh together over how awkward Akatsuki's apology (complete with melon) to her was, once he realizes that Fumi was right and that he'd been hurting both of them all along by being oblivious about Uneda's attempts to date him. She and Fumi can't exactly be friends right now, but it's likely that they will be in the future.

Even the bookstore rival shows up again, and I actually really liked her this time. She's funny and snarky and appealing as her true self, rather than the polished version she was trying to get Akatsuki to love. While she's claiming her scruffy hot pot guy friend isn't a boyfriend, it seems likely he will be; he likes her for who she is and is able to tease and relax with her in a way that she simply wouldn't have ever experienced with someone like Akatsuki. Maybe he's not the "cool" guy, but he's the right guy, for her.

She and Gorou both give Fumi a push, but I liked that it felt fairly natural. Gorou, in particular, wasn't really a love triangle; he isn't particularly interested in Fumi, and is mostly just trying to churn up some jealousy so Akatsuki will come to his senses and make a move. It's not that he wants to date Fumi himself...he's just blown away by how completely and steadfastly she loves Akatsuki. He doesn't want Fumi, but he is beginning to want someone like that in his own life, who will love him in a way he hasn't experienced in any of his casual relationships.

I don't think this series is long enough for him to pick up his own love interest, but that would be nice to see.

Mostly, though, this volume is about Akatsuki facing his own feelings for Fumi head on and telling her what it is that makes him love her. Well, first he tells the editor-in-chief (with Uneda listening in) that Fumi is the woman who's taught him how to relate to people on a deeper, more emotional level, which in turn is giving extra depth to the characters he writes.

Then he tells Fumi that something in her reached out to him on a kindred spirit level. They're different kinds of people - Fumi is resilient and hardworking and earnest, while Akatsuki kind of has his head in the clouds and doesn't think too much about other people. But their core is similar enough to respond to each other. There's a loneliness that the two of them understand about each other: a sense that they can't rely on anyone other than themselves, which has made them shut out the world in their own ways.

Fumi won't ask for help from anyone; Akatsuki decides he doesn't care about anyone. But interacting with Fumi more makes him realize that he does, and that being independent doesn't mean you have to be alone. This improves his friendship with Gorou, and helps him bond with Uneda in a way that Fumi had misunderstood; he only got along well with Uneda because Fumi had begun to change how he interacts with the world.

There's still a ton to unpack in their relationship, and some of the inexperience hurdles still seem fairly large. But they're getting there, and after ten volumes I can say I understand their love story and can definitely see a happy future for them.

This series really has a gentle take into it, doesn't it? While the mangaka tries to put some "love rivals" she doesn't turn them into the other shoujo manga wherein the rival tries reaaaaaaally hard to destroy the relationship of the leads. For me in this case, I feel like it goes kinda well with the series. Anyway, it looks like Fumi and Akatsuki's relationship continues to progress little by little. So far, this series is still pretty okay, imo :)

such a great volume~ I love it so muchh. It was adorable and yet again so damn good. I love how they resolve everything well and they communicate so well with each other. Yes it takes a while to know each other and it may seem embarrassing to talk about what you feel to your love one but it surely helps their relationship in this manga.

We finally got the moment that we’ve all been waiting for. I’m not gonna lie. They were a few times in this volume where it annoyed me that he called her child. Because then it made the age gap relationship feel worse. But I tried to let some of that go.

It was very entertaining and I am not gonna lie. I’ve felt so bad for Gorou. My heart really goes out to him. He is such a great friend.

I really like how Fumi doesn't always maintain like this completely innocent character and she is aware of the girls around her mans and the red flags ( even if it is with the help of her best friend). It makes her seem less annoying like girls in other shoujo mangas.

The ingenious friend finds a way to make peace between the two lovebirds! Akatsuki is always a bit brusque in his manners. Funny when he tries to exchange cuddles with Fumi and she flees. The same dynamic applies to the other characters, but it's always entertaining.
