This is an alternate cover edition for ASIN: B077P6SJKY

We’ve all heard the story of the four horsemen. Harbingers of the apocalypse. Destruction given form. Four of the sexiest—wait no—forget that. You get my point.

So imagine my surprise when I find out everything I’ve ever been told, is a lie.

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves here. Let’s start from the beginning.

My name is Ruby Morningstar. I run a tattoo parlor in Portland with my best-friend, have a pet raccoon, a crazy ex that stalks me, not to mention this one little thing… I’m a demon. Half-succubus to be exact. For the last twenty-three years of my life, that’s the story I believed, but on the day a handsome stranger bails me out of jail my world is turned upside down, and suddenly I don’t know who I am anymore.

Because the four horsemen aren’t the bringers of the apocalypse.

I am.

Talk about never catching a break.

Lucifer's Daughter is not a bad book, but I think it is too short for me to really appreciate it. It was entertaining though, and it is a quick read so there's that.

Not much happens in this book besides Ruby meeting the 4 Horsemen of the apocalypse and learning she is Lucifer's daughter and since he is dead (apparently), she is needed in Hell before all hell breaks loose (quite literally). She is the only one that can stop the apocalypse from happening.

This book is an introduction to the characters. We get to know Ruby, her BFF, her pet raccoon, and the 4 hot and intense Horsemen. I would say that Ruby is a nice and funny character, but then again, this book is so short, it is hard to get attached to her (or any of the characters). The 4 Horsemen... I honestly can't say much about them besides the fact that they are all insanely attracted to Ruby and all want to have sex with her. They are interesting though and I wouldn't mind some steamy scenes with them (hopefully in the next book).

I might continue with this series, but I am not in a rush.

Last year was my novelizations' year. This one might be my reverse harem year. The genre is growing on me.

Ruby has great potential as a kick-ass lady, and I hope Kel Carpenter delivers in the next book. There's a Kate Daniels feel to our girl (I cannot read "Why me?" and not think of Kate), but she stands on her own. And it's always nice to have four hot guys at your back and call 24/7 (I'm thinking about moving to a reverse-harem type of country. Is there such a thing? If not, I'm considering moving into a book). Although I'm curious as to how this menage-a-cinq is going to work.

Oh, and I want a pet raccoon like Bandit. He is the best!

My main problem with Lucifer's Daughter is its length. A longer novel would have been great.

Note to readers:

This is an Adult Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance Reverse Harem series that has explicit sexual situations, some dark content, lots of laughs and F-bombs, and a crazy raccoon. If you are okay with all these things then this is the series for you!

If you're not...well you probably should skip this one.

The last book in the Queen of the Damned series releases this month, January 21, 2018. If you're reading this after that, the entire series is out now!

I wouldn't say it was great but it was definitely entertaining.

- Her pet racoon Bandit is probably the cutest thing ever.
- I didn't like any of the characters, being Ruby or her guys, but didn't hate them either.
- The book felt even shorter than it was and i didn't have time to really appreciate it.
- Apocalypse, boom, boom, please destroy everything!

Every tired cliched urban fantasy trope rolled up together in a very thin plot.

ETA: I find I have more to say:

-cardboard love interests who have literally no other characterization but smirk, glare and brood (seriously, take smirk and brooding away from your average paranormal/romance authors, and there goes like 80% of their characterization of the love interests). One guy is vaguely defined by also having a sense of humor, but it still wasn't memorable enough that I could tell you his name.

-nonstop sexual violence: the MC is being stalked by an ex, she is drugged three times, nearly raped, nearly kidnapped by two different groups, and it's hinted that she was raped in the past. Then the MC blames herself for the actions of her stalker and would-be rapist because of what her powers are and he just couldn't help himself, and she should have been the one to be more careful. The book is less than 180 pages. That is an obscene amount in such a short time. It's always amazing to me that authors can dream up worlds where there's vampires and demons and magic and whatever else, but cannot find another way to show danger or tension other then by rape. It's so incredibly lazy.

-the romantic relationship is toxic: trying to control the MC's movements, ignoring her boundaries, and gaslighting/manipulation. Add to that weirdly common YA/NA paranormal trope of a May/December romance, only it's more like January 1st/December 31st romance--the 4 horsemen are thousands of years old, the MC is in her early 20s; and there are repeated references to how it was too bad they missed seeing her grow up and how they should have been her protectors during that. Because nothing says romance like supposed to have been a father figure to her growing up. Gross.

-the 4 horsemen are again thousands of years old, have vast experience, are super powerful, blah blah blah....and yet are literally the worst protectors ever. The stalker ex-boyfriend is repeatedly allowed to get close to the MC. The first time she goes out with one of the horsemen for a night out, she gets drugged and hidden away for over half an hour. But then despite how it's so dangerous and there's all these people who want to capture her, etc, a short time later they just casually let her go without them for another night on the town, where she is drugged again (twice that night) and almost raped, and the 2 near kidnappings. (Crap like having the MC attacked/threatened/etc when she's alone always feels like reinforcement of the idea that women can't be alone without male protection.) Also, it somehow takes 3 of the horsemen to clean up one murder, leaving only one to protect her....which is when those two kidnapping attempts and 3rd drugging come in. Leaving her with one protector was such a obvious shoehorned way to get her in even more danger; never mind that the one drugging, one near rape, one would-be rapist murdered, and the MC finding her powers were plenty high stakes already.

Was this book the worst? No, it held my interest enough despite all that to get me to read it till the end. It's just that books like this were what turned me off to the urban fantasy/paranormal genre for a good long while, even though I had absolutely loved it when I first discovered it, because I just got so sick of the non-stop toxic tropes that seemed to pervade so much of the genre. And ones like this show me that not enough has changed to not be more selective about what I read in it.

I love to write reviews... sometimes wordy, long, passionate reviews.

THIS needs minimal review, because well, it's just FANTASTIC.

Raccoon owning Succubus✔️
Sexy versions of the Four Horsemen✔️
Witty Banter✔️
Touch Her and You Die Vibes ✔️
Anticipation that will drive you to drink ✔️ Get this old lady a cold glass of Lemonade boys,

I really feel like I need not say more, but...

If you need more, well this book is a phenomenal intro to a world and storyline that will make you fall in love with Four VERY morally gray men while rooting for the anti-hero FMC.
It ends in a cliffhanger and I ain't even mad- I cannot wait to jump into the next like RIGHTNOW.

I found the audiobook for this novel included in my Audible subscription so I added it to my collection to listen so I can add it to my “read books” shelf.

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Everything Ruby Morningstar has been told about her life and the horsemen of the apocalypse are all lies. All she has known is that she runs a tattoo parlor in Portland with her friend, her pet raccoon, the ex that stalks her, and being a half-succubus.

She has believed this story for the past 23 years until she is bailed out of jail and that story is torn on its head when she gets out of jail. She didn’t realize until this point that SHE is in control of the horsemen of the apocalypse.

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

I’ll admit that I put this audiobook down in favor of “When the Moon Hatched” a few days ago. I couldn’t help feeling like this book was rather silly. I wasn’t in the mood for this book when I first picked it up.

I decided to continue with the book when I finished “When the Moon Hatched” after almost a week. I wanted to finish this book by the end of the year and I’m glad I was able to do so.

I’m not normally into demons in the novels I read but I decided to give this book a try this time, now that I’m serious about it. I’m not sure if I’l be continuing this series in the new year (2025) but I’ll consider it.

I do enjoy the fact that this book is short and the audiobook was only about 2 hours long. I’m not sure I’d be able to take it seriously if it was any longer. I don’t know what that says about my mood these days.

This is giving me major LA McGinnis vampire series vibes. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I enjoyed the reverse harem trope and didn’t realize it had the RH trope until I was well into the book.

This is more of a “me” problem. I didn’t do my research beforehand because I got the Kindle version of this book during one of the SYK days. I didn’t think I’d ever get to it but here we are.

The only thing that annoyed me about the audiobook version of this book is when the female narrator tried to voice the male characters. I started laughing when she voiced Laran. I couldn’t help it and I feel kinda bad for that.

Would I recommend this book? I suppose so, if you enjoys books with monster smut included. I do enjoy a good monster smut book or two and I did enjoy the tension that showed up almost immediately. lol What does that say about me??

I want a pet raccoon. For now, my chubby cats and fluffy dogs will do, I guess.

ANYWAY. Pleasantly surprised.

A little slow of a start? Yes, but I liked that. This book I feel was completely introductory to the shit that’s about to go down. So I’m hella excited for book two.

FINALLY. A reverse harem that’s not like the others were everyone falls in love and trust in .000002 seconds. These characters are actually taking their time. *manically clapping*

^^^ I feel like I say FINALLY a lot, even though there are a few other RH’s where the character’s feelings develop nicely.

Let’s talk about the raccoon, Bandit. Fucking adorable. That’s all I have to say.

Moira: the best friend. Love it when the bff of the heroine isn’t a chaotic mess. Yes, she’s protective and questions the Horsemen religiously. No, she’s not immature. At least, I wasn’t getting that vibe. She’s a mature crazy. Not immature crazy. We are alike in that way, Moira and I.

(Read the Marked series for whiny/raging bffs that annoy the shit out of me.)

Point of originality for Gryffindor? I’m not sure. Who came first? Four Psychos or Lucifer’s Daughter? Not that the plot is the same, or the characters, or the humor.

Nevermind, they are completely different books.

The men’s bafflement is humorous. They’re actually all very serious in this book.
I hope to see some more softening (or hardening hahaha) between the characters as far emotions (or opening up lol).

The development overall is good. Pace is good.
Good, good, good. Now, book two.

Holy hot demons! This was a fun read! I was sucked in as soon as I got a few sentences into Ruby’s POV in the first chapter. She was funny, witty, and fun to read about.

The book was well written and paced faced. I feel like we got a lot for the first book in this new series and I’m not mad it. This book is told in multiple POV’s and it great because we got to see what not only Ruby was feeling but also the guys.

Of course, I’m in love with Reverse Harem, so when I saw four demons...excuse me, the four horsemen I knew I wanted to get my hands on it. Thank goodness for #whychoose because dammit I wouldn’t be able to. Every one of them seemed perfect and I was swooning for all of them.

After the ending, I’m going to be stalking the author's Facebook for teasers about Wicked Games.

I received an ARC for a honest review.

I know with KU books it can be a mixed bag but I still expect some due diligence from the author. Some light research will inform an author that in the US the victim does not press charges, it's the prosecutor that decides if someone will be charged or not. Bail requires a hearing, someone cannot post bail for you until a judge sets bail... Blowing up a car will not be a little fine and everyone moves on... I figure if the author didn't take time with these few basics I just don't want to continue on because it's unlikely to improve from here.

I really dislike some of the men in the harem. The men/demons/gods are thousands of years old and the h is 23. Not only is there a huge age gap but the h thinks she is half-human and therefore a weak demon. So, there is a perceived power gap.

The h is drugged up and because of the drugs she is in agony if she doesn't find release (such a trope). The man with her, I think it was death, decides to get her off because he didn't want her to be in agony. Now, they hadn't had much if any intimacy between the 2 characters. Yet, death is like I'll only give you release if you follow these rules and what he wanted/needed, basically dom/sub play. Now, I don't have any problem with anyone's kink as long as it is agreed up by everyone involved, there are safe words, after-care and everyone understands they are entering a scene. None of that was done. This super old and powerful man was forcing the drugged up 23 year old woman to do what he said, otherwise she wouldn't get release and would be in agony. It squigged me out. Borderline dub/con.

Every interaction between death and the h felt like death was trying to control her, like he was grooming her. Ew! No thanks.

3.5, but rounded down due to length. The trouble with books that are only around the 150-170 page mark is it just feels character development, and/or world building, is something that suffers from the lack of word count.

Saying that, I enjoyed this well enough. It was a light read, Ruby was likeable and has lots of potential, as were the Four Horseman.

Off to read book 2.

I. love.

Honestly, it took me a minute to get into the series but as soon as I got into this book, I knew there was no way that I was going to put it down.
Kellie Carpenter does an amazing job of a writing this amazing debut novel to her series.
What do you say when four men show up on your doorstep telling you that you’re the antichrist daughter? Did I mention that they’re hot? Oh, and that you have a pet raccoon? Lol I love this.

This was a nice book!
The story is short and fast paced, the writing is great!
Ruby is a orphan half-sucubus that finds out that she is actually the daughter of Lucifer, princess of Hell!
Really like Ruby personality, she is easy going, don't scare easy and her relation with Bandit her pet raccoon is just so sweet and funny!
Like the princess she is, she got herself 4 protectors...  the 4 Hourseman! Death, Pestilence, Famine and War!
I don't really like RH books but this one was bearable, there is a connection with all of them but more in the protective side (for now).
My favorite one was Laran aka War...

Random things:
Lucifer "died"?!?!? WTF?!
If we don't know a little of Paranormal world we got a little lost, there is not big explanation about what are sucubus / Incubus, Banshees, Imps, In case of Ruby, some people may not understand why man are so obsessed with her and  her problem in the past!!

Although is a RH book will read the 2nd book!

Very interesting take on the whole demon/Lucifer’s daughter thing. In fact it doesn’t really come up. This world builds and sets us up for the next book, which I think will be more interesting.

I had fun with Ruby. Although the shitty people around her suck. I’m on the fence about Moira though. I’m not sure I like her BFF. Her attitudes rub me the wrong way. I am hoping she softens up soon since she seems sorta bitchy.

The Horsemen are interesting and this take on them as well is different. I am enjoying getting to know them but I don’t think I know enough of them yet to say I like or dislike them. I’m hoping the next book dives further into them all.

Mini-Review:

A fun little twist on hell & the four horseman. The writing has promise and the characters were interesting. This series would have been better off if it focused more on developing a plot and having a romance for a bit of fire. I had fun reading it and will try to get the rest in when I can.

Ruby Morningstar is a half-succubus living in Portland where she owns a tattoo parlor with her best-friend/roomie/banshee, Moira and has an incredible pet raccoon and a not so incredible crazy ex. After teaching someone a needed lesson in how to be a better human, Ruby is bailed out of jail by a handsome demon. He and his 'brothers' turn Ruby's life upside-down. Rysten, Allistair, Julian, and Laran, otherwise known as Pestilence, Famine, Death, and War. The Four Horsemen. The Horsemen aren’t aren't the bringers of the apocalypse like we've been told, they were created to protect Lucifer's Daughter, the one who can. And they are certain that Ruby is Lucifer's little girl now all grown up.

Lucifer's Daughter is fantastic! Compelling concept, strong characters. Ruby is a snarky, independent, strong-willed, slightly damaged. Bandit, her trash panda is beyond adorable. I loved this little guy. He stole every scene that he was in. Moira was the best friend each girl deserves in all her green glory. The Horsemen were all gorgeous, sexy men exuding power and danger.

This is the first book I have read by Kel Carpenter. I am now officially a fan. She is an expert with a smoldering storyline. Very nice writing. The book is mostly 1st person POV told from Ruby's perspective; however, you do get short chapters from each of the Horsemen to give the reader insight into their state of mind. The ending scene of the book was not so much a cliffhanger as an idea of things to come. I look forward to Wicked Games. I believe Hell has met its match with Ruby.

Trigger Warning: There is a sexual assault that could be upsetting to anyone who has experienced and survived one themselves.

Okay, that was sick.

The female lead has been drugged and is higher that a kite and begging for sexual release because the drug has induced a level of sexual need so high she is IN PAIN from it. One of her 'love interests' declares he is not going to take advantage of her... and then proceeds to take advantage of her, choosing to finger her while she is in no condition to give consent. (But not kiss her on the lips 'cause he's such a stand up guy.)

Even if he had to give her some sort of sexual release instead of knocking her out (which, given all these men are suppose to be soooooooo powerful, I find hard to believe), there are several less invasive ways he could have gone about it. Heck, given it didn't require a cock, he could have just guided her into doing herself since she was too insensible to think of it, and then left her alone.

But him choosing to finger-rape her, while sick, is not even the sickest part. The sickest part is he insists she position herself a certain way so he can spoon her from behind, trapping her against him, and then insists she not move the whole time he is fingering her. Even knowing she is high and therefore not in control of herself, if she does move, he will punish her by stopping, leaving her back at square one, desperate and IN PAIN, for disobeying his command.

And then, even knowing this is without her voluntary and informed consent and she is IN PAIN, instead of giving her a quick release, he decides to draw it out, so she is in pain FOR LONGER.

This is not hot, this is not romantic, this is not enjoyable to read.

It is just sick.

DNF and DO NOT RECOMMEND!

Mon avis en Français

My English review

I’m not a big fan of reverse harem. In fact, I can easily say that the only series I tried in this genre did not convince me. But never mind, I thought that I shouldn’t die a fool and that I should try another series to see if I could hang on to this genre.

In the end, I stay a little bit on my initial position because… the reverse harem, it annoys me ! Yes, it annoys me when all the men all want to sleep with heroine, when others are completely obsessed with her… And of course, to add a layer, our heroin is virgin. This is my second reverse harem and my second virgin! Well, okay, maybe it’s not mandatory, but it still pisses me off.

I look negative, don’t I? Yes, I know! But it’s just annoying! But, that aside, I liked the story, the author had some good ideas. It must be said that a novel about the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, it’s still very nice and then, and they’re super sexy too, so how can I resist? Then there’s also our heroine, who could well be Lucifer’s daughter and who sees her life turned upside down overnight. Besides, after this end, it is not likely to get better!

So yes, the reverse harem, may not be my favorite genre, but I must say that I am curious to discover the rest of the story and I’ll launch myself into it with great pleasure because I’m sure that the author has a lot of surprises in store for us.

This was a good start to a new and interesting RH series. Ruby is a half demon succubus and is all around awesome. She has a pet racoon, works as a tattoo artist and is known for getting into trouble around town especially where her ex is concerned. All of a sudden four random males start following her around claiming she's the devil's daughter, must return to hell to save the world and she wholeheartedly disagrees. She has the worst luck and in less than 24 hours manages to get drugged twice. Honestly how she's survived this long on her own is surprising. As the potential catalyst to the apocalypse, the pressure is on and Ruby's birthright becomes well known to demons making her very important and highly endangered. Minor cliffy for an end but managed to listen to this via Hoopla in a matter of hours.

A solid 3.5.

It wasn't great but it wasn't bad either. I was entertained if nothing else.

Ruby is a great MC. There wasn't much depth to the guys as of now but I am hoping that changes in the next book.

I will continue with the series.

This novel is well done, although I don’t know how many books I’ve read which included Lucifer’s daughter. The characters are well defined with each Horseman being a distinct identity. The mean are strong, the women are tough, and the opposition get what they deserve.

2.5 ⭐️

50-50.

50% good: good writing, good dialogue, some good parts to the characters, good story premise.

Was easy to read, the dialogue was conversational and flowed well, I zipped through it in a couple of hours or so.

50% bad: a lot of off putting, or shallow parts to the characters, poor world building, inconsistent plot points, too fast.

The FMC is juvenile, immature, and self centred. She learns of an impending apocalypse and how does she react? Doesn’t involve me, I have a life to get back to. 😳 Exactly what part of Apocalypse Is she failing to understand?
She continually argues that she isn’t who they believe, but asks no questions, offers no counter arguments beyond those easily dealt with, and basically has a head in the sand mentality to the whole situation.

She may be 23, but she also grew up in an orphanage and owns her own business, in theory, you would expect her to have some level of responsibility?
This is the woman 4 guys over a thousand yrs old are drawn to…why?

We don’t learn anything but those basic facts, so our understanding is very limited.

MMC’s are supposedly ancient, trained, experienced, but behave like easily distracted and unprofessional amateurs. They don’t do anything special until after the fact, for no obvious reason, other than as a plot device. Very disappointing.
We don’t learn any real details about them, or spend any significant time with them as a group or individuals. Our entire experience revolves around them flirting with the FMC.

[Though I was greatly impressed by the thought from one of them, that if they had watched her grow up, they couldn’t sexually desire her.]

Other than a couple of overly dramatic moments, we spend the majority of the story going between very brief moments of flirting, and incomplete arguments about what she is, or isn’t. The rest is just superfluous details, that in a full novel would hold relevance, but on their own, are just filler.

The best part of the entire book was the raccoon. 🥸

Heiß, heißer, .. die Hölle! 🔥
