Fan-favorite webcomic creator Megan Rose Gedris ( Yu+Me Dream ) crafts a compelling tale of magic, deception, and wonder in this stunningly illustrated graphic novel about the bond between sisters.

Pragmatic engineer Anna works as a psychic in the Samson Brothers Circus, but she doesn't believe in anything supernatural—until her twin sister Kat is murdered and comes back as a very demanding ghost. Sharing a room with her sister was hard, but now they're sharing a body while trying to identify the killer. With few leads, a troupe full of secretive folk, and strange paranormal occurrences popping up around the circus, solving the case seems near impossible. But the murderer in their midst may be the least of their problems...

A mystery and thriller with a pinch of humor and magic in a graphic novel, that's what readers would find in this amazing first installment of the Spectacle comic series. I didn't expect much when I've checked the synopsis, but I was really amazed at how great the story was written. It is not perfect but reading this reminds us of several things, such as loving our siblings and respect.

When Kat, a knife thrower, is murdered, her twin sister Anna, a circus fake psychic, gains the ability to see the dead, including her sister. Now Anna must discover who killed her sister while dealing with the realities of living in a travelling circus in the 19th century. The art and story took me a LONG time to warm up to. But once we finally got to the meat of the story the book really picked up. I wouldn't call this a detective novel because Anna doesn't do much detecting. She more just accuses everyone and then decides that person didn't do it. The more intriguing parts of the story are finding out about the rest of the circus folk. Even though Anna has been with the circus for 15 years, she's always kept to herself. Ends very abruptly, mid story which sucks because I read volume 2 won't be out for another year, Summer 2019.

This is REALLY fun! This follows sisters Kat and Anna, who both perform at a traveling circus. Kat throws knives, while Anna reads fortunes as Madam Strange (though she's more interested in perfecting her conjecture engine and scientifically-based approximations of the future). When Kat is murdered, she comes back as a ghost that only Anna can see - and then Anna has to solve the mystery of her death.

All of this pushes every single button that I have as a reader (traveling circus! sisters! ghosts! mysteries! beautiful period dresses! vague steampunk feel! amazing names!) and I'm so surprised that I found it just by wandering around a Half Price Books. I can't believe none of my friends have read it. The second volume came out this week, and I'm excited to start it.

Anna and her twin sister are travelling with the Samson Brothers Circus, when something bad happens. Anna's sister Kat is murdered. Now it is up to Anna to figure out who did it. Kat helps her, because she appears as a ghost. There are also some other mysterious things going on, which leads to a troubling ending of the book.

This graphic novel kind of surprised me! It was really engaging, funny and the art was really cool sometimes. But I thought the ending was a bit abrupt, and a lot of questions are left unsolved.

I would recommend this if you want to read something quick and mysterious!

This graphic novel series about magic and murder took a bit to hook me, but now that it has, I need to get on with reading the third and final volume. Anna and her sister Kat travel with a circus. Anna’s a practical engineer, Kat’s a more free-spirited performer. When Kat is killed and appears to Anna as a ghost, Anna has to swallow her skepticism about the paranormal and investigate her sister’s death. The art style is less refined than the cover, but I adjusted, and ended up loving it. (Probably because I’m a sucker for great hair in comics and Anna’s is gorgeous.) The characters are fascinating, there’s plenty of spooky, and the mystery is properly wound up with Anna’s complicated but very real love for her sister.

Okay, I started reading this book did not expect much because somehow books with circus or carnaval theme never really made me in love. Same with this book, I did not love it, I enjoyed this graphic novel, but whyyyy it ended there?
I feel like it would be much better if they actually did not leave me hanging like that :(

Overall, 3 stars.

Thank you Netgalley and Oni Press for giving an e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

The spectacle will bring you into a world of magic, and you will not know the difference which was the real or not.

And that’s what happened to Anna; when her twin sister died, Kat’s ghost decided to be inside of Anna’s body. They became a partner in discovering who killed Kat, but as soon as they were finding the truth, they were also introduced to new adventures and discoveries.

This is my first graphic novel requested to Netgalley, that’s why I am excited to read it so soon. And as I finished this, there were so many thoughts came into my mind in regards to this graphic novel.

Though I am not an expert in reviewing a graphic novel, those were the main points I noticed.

All in all, I still enjoyed it and the graphic images were really splendid. And I am excited about the adventures of Kat and Anna.

A murder story combines with magic, supernatural thing is something new to me. Rarely have I read a book with these combinations, but somehow it comes out quite unique in its own way. The story of Anna who doesn’t believe in ghost and now she had to live with her sister’s ghost is somehow ironic.

When I first read this book, I was disappointed. The graphic is weird, the coloring has a rare combination. I left it for a week before I read it again. Turns out, the story is good and humor also appears in a few parts. Once you read it, you will indulge into the mystery instead of the unique color and illustration.

I like it that Anna’s quest to find her sister’s murderer is getting more interesting and intriguing as the story goes. She has 1 friend who helps her. The circus life is also quite appealing with their bizarre characters. It really pictured a mystical circus.

Illustration style is actually not my biggest favorite. I’m ok with the lines not being uneven, but I feel that the faces are very simple. Some of the texts are hard to read, being too squiggly. But I like the coloring. The combination of watercolor and ink is perfect. It’s like combining a hard and soft element at the same time.

The story ended with a strange event…the strangest during the whole book. It really makes it feels the whole book feels mystical and there might be some dark force at play here. I’m kind of hoping that there will be the next book.

Recommend for those who loves crime and mystery book with a twist of magical, illogical, supernatural element, all thrown together.

The quirky appeal of the art and writing just outweigh the clumsiness and awkwardness of the same. A murder in the American Old West (one that is not solved in this volume, by the way) forces a smart, introverted, amateur steampunk computer programmer whose day job is fortune teller in a circus to become an investigator, looking for the murderer amongst her coworkers in the main ring, the side shows and the freak show (which while handled fairly well here, is still problematic ground to tread). A skeptic, she is also forced to cope with new, in-her-face evidence of supernatural forces at work.

I'd like to see how things develop in a second volume.

Spectacle (vol. 1) is a story about sisters, Anna (a “psychic”) and Kat (a knife thrower), who work in a circus. One night, Kat, was murdered by getting literally stabbed in the back. (It’s kinda ironic how she’s the one throwing knives but she died with knives being thrown at her.) Anna is determined to find out who the murderer is among them. But there are more things to happen in that complicated circus of theirs.

I’ve never really been a fan of comics or graphic novels so I didn’t know what to expect from this one. But when I saw that it wasn’t just an ordinary comic with a normal plot, I wanted to read it. Sisters. Mystery. A circus setting. Sign me up! :”)

At first, I thought this book was a bit slow but after the murdered happened, things started to get interesting. Of course, I have my theories and suspicions. Right now, I can’t really confirm because I’ve only read the first volume but I expect the following volume to give me more clues to connect.

The art was very different from what I expected. It was fresh and new to my eyes. It’s nice to see various art styles every now and then. I also liked the diversity of the characters. Not only was there a representation of POC but you can also sense the representation of the LGBTQ+ community. Each character was diverse with different personalities which made them unique individuals. I see myself growing to like and hate some characters in this comics as it progresses.

The comics as a whole was great but the cliffhanger ruined it for me because to be honest, the anticipation is killing me. I can’t wait to read the next volume so I can have more insight and solve the mystery along with Anna so Kat can get the justice she deserves.

This comic is a short and quick read, starts off slow but speeds up eventually. Stuff gets serious. A murder happens a dead person is involved. But it doesn’t end there. So join me in awaiting the next volume of this cool and mysterious comic.

Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read more comics. :")

Thank you to NetGalley and Oni Press for providing me with an ARC! All opinions are my own.

Actual rating: 4.5.
This comic has everything I like in stories: a murderer, a circus, lots of magic and beautiful art! Though I feel like it’s very introductory (I bet the story is going to become much more complex than what it seems at first sight), it has lots of action and nothing seems unnecessary. The main character is not the most likeable one, but the dynamics between her and her sister are really fascinating and everything points to lots of character development in future volumes. I also liked the fact that we get to know other characters and their backgrounds, which makes it more realistic and interesting since there are so many suspects! I’m excited to read the next volume and see how this story develops, because I was definitely not expecting that ending. Such a promising first volume!

★★★½⭐

"I was born at a sunrise, thirty years ago. My sister made her entrance to the world at dusk. The trend continued throughout our lives."

Kat and Anna are twin sisters but couldn't be more different. Kat is a social butterfly and a knife thrower and Anna is Madame Strange - not good with pepole unless giving them false propercies. One night Kat gets murdered and Anna has to deal with the loss, find out who killed her sister, and figure out what's going on with Kat's ghost.

Considering that it's a story about the death of the sister I thought the tone is going to be more serious but it was a really funny read. Kat's a hilarious ghost and I laughed a lot while reading this book so I'm glad it kept the melancholy at bay.

I liked the interactions between Kat and Anna. It's nice to read something about a bond between siblings for once and I haven't read that in a while.

At the beginning I didn't really like the art (especially how the faces are drawn) but I got used to it and I have to admit that it suits the atmosphere of a circus. Also, the colours used looked interesting.

The comic ended in a strange place? I'm not sure whether I haven't received the full thing (I've only got 115 pages) but it seemed cut too suddenly.

All in all, I would like to read more of that.

This was an interesting concept with some interesting characters, although it seemed to end rather abruptly and is 20 pages shorter than the page count here. I think my ARC copy might be missing some pages at the end because otherwise it was just a really abrupt cliffhanger. Still, the characters and world are interesting enough so I would like to read volume two when it comes out. The art style takes a little while to get used to but I liked it pretty well by the end of the volume.

Circus train is stuck in the middle of nowhere. The fortune teller's sister turns up dead.
The fortune teller is tasked with discovering her killer. While being haunted by her ghost.

So much queerness and diversity and fun backstage performance drama. I read the first two volumes of this after buying them off of the author at Emerald City Comic Con 2019 on a coworker's recommendation.

SO GOOD.

A shift in genre for me, Spectacle Vol. 1 introduces the cast & crew of the Samson Brothers circus.

A great launch into the circus, we meet a variety of the characters and devour snippets of their backstories.

Like many other Circus Sideshows, the Samson Brothers show has that PT Barnum style, with conjoined twins, knife throwers, clowns and a bearded lady, too.

We follow our protagonist Anna, the pragmatic engineer~psychic, after she finds her sister, Kat, dead on their trailer floor, seemingly murdered with one of the knives from her own routine.

We follow Anna as she tries to solve the mystery of her sisters death with the help of Kat’s ghost, dealing with her grief a long the way.

Through the loss of her sister, Anna forged new friendships, especially that of Flora.

The ending felt rather abrupt and mysterious, however I believe this may have been intentional, with a few leads in the murder mystery I look forward to following Anna into the next volume and hope we can explore her personality a little more, aside from when she’s with Kat/ her clairvoyance.

Whilst this graphic novel doesn’t appear to have explicit LGBTQ+ characters depicted in volume one, the art style lends itself to the belief that at least some of the characters are queer-coded (looking at you, Jebediah, Gideon & Flora) I look forward to hopefully exploring this theory in volume two!

I liked the premise a lot for this story: circus performer has to solve a murder that takes place when they’re stranded on the railroad tracks on the way to their next performance. Having the ghost of the murder victim help her solve the mystery made it even more interesting.
I was hoping for more resolution in this first volume, but I’ll stay on board for more. Anna is an interesting enough heroine, and I like Flora as her sidekick. My favorite panel of the book was Flora pulling a list of suspects from the depths of her considerable cleavage.

Interesting graphic novel with insight into what it is like to be part of a moving carnival. The only thing is that I'm picky about artwork and I wasn't really crazy about the style the cover and the chapter pages were beautiful I just wish it was like that throughout the graphic novel.

I'm not sure exactly why I loved this book so much, but I did. I already have the next volume on hold at the library. Anna is the fortuneteller in a circus, and her twin sister Kat is the knife thrower. Then Kat is apparently murdered, with her own knives. As Anna tries to find Kat's murderer, with the help of Kat's ghost, we get to know several of the various people in the circus. I hope we get to know more of them in the next volumes; they are so quirky and interesting. Meanwhile the circus is in a pinch, and Anna's psychic powers (which she barely believes in) are proving helpful.

Spectacle Vol. 1 is a fantastic +magical graphic novel!! I loved it!! (~˘▾˘)~*:✧・✧♥♥
It has a great art style, wonderfully plotted story, in-depth characters, elements of mystery, paranormal, & so much more, all while centering around a traveling circus that gets halted in a desert town!

The main character Anna works at the Samson Brothers Circus as an engineer and soon has to solve the mystery of her twin sister, Anna's death! When Anna comes back as a ghost, its up to Anna to solve the case when it looks like it may have been a murder!

I'd been wanting to pick this up for sometime (b/c I'd been familiar with it as a web-comic) but decided to wait until this 1st volume released!! It was such a great graphic novel & I can't wait to read the next one!

I received a copy of Spectacle Vol. 1 from NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Spectacle is by Megan Rose Gedris, though it isn’t her first graphic novel by any means. Yu+Me is probably her most famous work, but she’s also done works such as I Was Kidnapped by Lesbian Pirates from Outer Space (try saying that ten times fast), and Small Town Blues.
What originally drew my attention to Spectacle was the cover; the rich colors and circus theme immediately captivated me, and I knew I had to give this new series a try. Spectacle is about two twin sisters whom are part of a travelling circus. One is whimsical and flighty, while the other is pragmatic and down to earth. It’s ironic then that the pragmatic sister, Anna, is the one that can predict the future and see ghosts. Not exactly traits one would expect from a realistic person, no?
The story of Anna and Kat is oddly compelling – they’re both so different from one other, but their ties are unbreakable. Seeing them try to solve this mystery together against all odds…it was wonderful. Though I do wish it hadn’t ended on a cliffhanger (mostly because I’m not a fan of them).
The artwork for this series is outstanding. I expected rich colors based on the cover, but I wasn’t expecting the level of details or other subtle details that were included. I love the way Gedris portrayed the circus as well as the more supernatural events that occurred.
I’m probably going to have to continue reading this series, because I’m officially hooked. I hope the wait for volume two isn’t too long…
